I went to fix my flat tire with them after 1 day without even driving the bike the tire was flat again I got back to the store to repair the mistakes that they did and they charged me again. The front fender of my electric bike was rubbing and I got to Walt's at opening last Saturday. The store was bright, clean and not busy yet. I was helped by a very knowledgeable guy named Andy. He put my bike up and had it sorted in 5 minutes. I then remembered I wanted a new side mirror. It was a bit tricky considering how my bike is set up, but in about 36 minutes my bike was ready ( I wandered over to Target and the farmers market) Overall a 10/10 experience. read more

Had a set of wheels I kept saying I would replace the spoke nipples on (two broke on their own...sigh). Got a rebuild quote for the pair for around $250, couldn't pass it up. A couple weeks later, got them back good as new. Hard to complain when proper tools alone are more than this, and it takes several hours to true. read more

Been going here for many years as it's the local bike shop. Their bikes have always been expensive as heck, but I figured at least they'd be good quality. Then e-bikes came out. And they kind of refused to grow up. We tried out some of their e-bikes, and they were really awful compared to what you could get from various online direct dealers. But we still went there for service sometimes. Today we brought our RadPower bike in for brake service (which put any of the e-bikes they had been selling to complete shame), and they completed refused to even have the bike in the shop for the fifteen minutes or whatever it would take for them to mess with the brakes. Due to a battery recall that *didn't even affect* the model of battery on our bike. I couldn't help but feel like they were sour about e-bikes in general, and they're only look to serve the athletic/school kid crowd. Edit on manager response: I don't blame the people working there for what was clearly a decision by the management to not support RadPower, a very popular e-bike brand. The people who helped me were as helpful as they could be given the constraints placed upon them. I would understand the safety concern if this was a model battery matching the recall. But to ban the brand as a whole seems like a lack of understanding about the base-level dangers of e-bike batteries to me. I've got over a half-century cycling experience (both commuting & touring) and have learned that, while I can make repairs on the road, the best work is by those people behind the counter as they have the right tools and knowledge about virtually anything on two wheels (or three, if a Tryke!), especially if they carry your specific make. I have had the opportunity to become acquainted with various techs over the years, and will always seek out their expertise with aspects that are my weakness (e.g., rebuilding/respoking/truing/balancing wheels). Since reTIREDment 31DEC2017, I've continued my World (bike) tour, regularly renting bikes in different countries, but COVID has forced me to stay domestic (Including the two great countries immediately South (¡MAGNIFICENT MEXICO!) and North (¡MAGNIFICENT CANADA!) and within the past ~year, relocating from my El PasoTX-USA home to be close to grandchildren. After a year in HoustonTX-USA, they returned to the Bay Area a fortnight ago, and we now live about three blocks away. I spilled so much information to explain my biking philosophy/strategy. Whether in El Paso/Houston/or Mountain ViewCA-USA, one of the first things I do is find a reliable shop with knowledgeable staff. I've been extremely fortunate to find such a shop within a half-hour's cycle: WALT'S CYCLES [116 Carroll Street, SunnyvaleCA 94986 USA; 408.739.4287;waltscycle.com] My first clue at how great this shop is is the name; Walt's Cycles. That is the same name of the high quality bike shop that catered to me in ColumbiaMO-USA, where I finished up my undergraduate degree over 40 years ago! So, a few days ago, I was out cycling around the area and ventured into this shop while in adjacent Sunnyvale. I was agog at the multitude of bikes & related material! Head honcho Gilbert oriented me on some specific items (replacement seat/covers for my much better half's Haro), but I knew she needed to decide--it has taken decades together for me to learn that my decision would be wrong, regardless of intention! The following day, both of us cycled there, following one of my "creative routes" (guaranteed to upset anybody who prefers strictly point A to point B, particularly if google maps-directed), but Andy quickly calmed her anxieties with a perfect sales pitch, fantastically quick service, and a price that couldn't be beat! We made excellent time back to Mountain View on the superbly smooth (97%) Evelyn Road. So this morning, for the third consecutive day, I mentioned the need to get a cable cut but not having the right precision clipper to do it. However, I knew WALT'S CYCLE had the perfect cable cutter and, as long as I wasn't TOO creative, we made good time. I (gimp)walked in, pushing my "FrankenBike", and met tech ANGELINA, who made very quick work of isolating the excess brake cable. I am so happy to have had the good fortune of finding a top-notch cycle shop so quickly upon establishing a temporary home here by the bay. Me, my wife, and my sister in law have all been to Walt's cycle a bunch times and multiple times they failed to fix my bike. Went there to get the derailleur adjusted a couple weeks and it threw me off my bike when I went for a ride today with my wife and my sister in law. And I've gone there to get my bike tuned up but every time I've ridden my bike, something gives out. Had a terrible experience there. You'll waste your money because you can't trust them fixing up your bike, something will more likely give out and you'll probably have the same problem or a different problem and they'll waste your time as well. Me, my wife, or my sister in law have all had issues with our bikes and we won't be going there anymore and we'll find somewhere else to get our bikes fixed. These are basic tune ups that we asked them to perform so if you don't have an expensive bike then Walt's bikes is not the place to go, they'll treat your bike like crap and you'll waste your money and time. Definitely don't get your bike or bikes fixed at Walt's, huge waste of your time and money. They wanted $33 just tighten the screws for the derailleur which is outrageous and we have no idea what they did to it because they wrote nothing done from the previous times for my bike. read more

I love Andy and the service staff at Walt's and they have done a great job maintaining my standard chain bicycles. Nonetheless, I cannot help but feel disappointed for the absolutely terrible service they have done for my internal hub belt drive bicycle. I brought in my belt drive bike twice in 2024 for a rear flat service. Both times the cable alignment of the internal gear hub was badly messed up after the flat was repaired. I did not even bother to have them fix it the second time and have not ridden this bike for a year as a result. I brought back the bike just recently for another service with specific instruction to align the hub cabling, which i spent ten minutes discussing with staff. Once again it is not done when I pick up the bike, and when I brought it up with the mechanic, he did a quick correction but did not fine tune the alignment, and it has a clear effect on the shifting performance. In trying to fix the cabling myself, I've discovered that the multiple realignments to the cable over these tire replacements have caused the cable to fray. Aligning the shifter cable should not even be a part of the tire removal, so even worse that they've essentially created one more additional problem in trying effectively service a flat tire. It's so frustrating because I have been supporting this establishment for years, but I have no confidence in their ability to service this specific type of bicycle and every time my bike seems less rideable when I come to pick it up. read more

After paying in full for my bicycle purchase, I waited to have a few additional parts installed When I arrive to pick up the bicycle, I was notified of additional charges that had never been mentioned. I was told it was some kind of price adjustment for the seat they installed. This was not an additional purchase. I had already paid in full for all these parts. The explanation made no sense, but I paid the additional fee anyway It showed me that they really don't care much for their customers. Unfortunate experience. Bought a bike from them and the rear tire failed (no puncture, just a rupture of the valve). Brought it in and they blamed riding on low pressure. Paid to get it changed (they put a slightly different brand / spec tire). The tire failed again in 9 months. There was no riding on low pressure or puncture. But Walt's would not take any responsibility for faulty / bad parts. We will not be buying any bikes from them going forward. read more

I had a trek mountain bike that came with the 1997 vw jetta. I went to walts to pick this bike up,and now even though my bike is still in great condition,i decided to upgrade. After riding a couple of basic mtn bikes,my eyes were aimed at the Fuel ex 5,and even though the price difference was greater i chose this bike. Jim walked me through the differences which made stepping down was now not an option. I purchased gloves,pump,helmet,lights,a different seat ,due to Jim's professional opinions.. i am so pleased with this purchase ,and my ride to 7-11 is so awesome..i even rode through some puddles. This review is for Michelle? I came in yesterday and purchased a new unicycle. I wasn't sure if my size as I haven't had one since 2018. I wasn't advised or guided in my selection. Just allowed to pick and purchase. Don't get me wrong, William was professional, but didn't verify that I got the right size for me as a buyer. After trying it out in a rubber matted gym setting, I come to find out I need a slightly larger unicycle. I come back in and try to do an exchange as it has been less than 24 hours. William sees it and says "should be totally fine but let me check with Michelle". After about 10 minutes they come back out and William tells me they would only give me half back as they'd charge me a restocking fee due to some minor scratches on the frame. Minor like 1mm in length. Michelle was standing next to him and never addressed me directly. Even corrected William and added "he'll only get half the value". So instead of an exchange, they wanted to charge me a restock fee on top of the cost of a new unicycle! Am I wrong for trying to get an exchange? No. Do I feel some more guidance of product could've helped avoid this point? Yes. Sucks cause I live nearby, but I won't be coming back again. read more

I'm not sure what these guys did, but it feels like they made my bike faster! I've been to Walt's a few times - first in 2012 to buy the wife a hybrid bike, and then a couple times for service over the last few years. Service from the guys up at the counter has been excellent. This week, I brought my road bike to Walt's to have a broken derailleur cable replaced, as riding while stuck in the highest gear was a bit tiresome. Their mechanic was out that day, but they were able to perform my repair the next day despite the mechanic having a few day's worth of scheduled repairs (maybe some other customers didn't show). My bike shifts like a dream now, and they even fixed the sloppy shifting I've been getting on the front gears! And they must've done something else as well, because it really feels easier to pedal. Walt's used to be a Trek and Raleigh shop, but nowadays it seems like they mostly sell Trek and Diamondback. They have a decent selection of different types of bikes to suit everyone's riding style. Prices for bikes and service here have always seemed a bit pricey. But running a business in Sunnyvale can't be cheap, and there are fewer options in the area now that some other bike shops (like my go-to place in Mountain View) have closed. So overall, Walt's continues to be a great asset to our community. read more

Disappointed. Was in the area and decided to check it out as I was looking for gravel tire replacements. Andy greeted us and was welcoming also very knowledgeable it seemed like, as he was helping us out his coworker interrupted and reminded him a client was waiting for him and just left. Then got helped by her which quickly turned me over to one of the techs to help me find the right tire for my gravel bike. I knew what I was looking for (tubeless hybrid tires), both the young lady and the tech took a look at my bike and told me my wheels were not tubeless ready also kept saying I could special order something. read more

This is a high bill complaint. I came into Walt's on Saturday afternoon after 4 pm with a flat tire. I ride a Surly Long Haul Trucker bike which has a battery on the rear rack and a rear motor rim. Other than being heavy, it is a standard bike. Andy charged me a whopping $78 for this service; $12 for the tube and $65 for service. This is too much money and I don't accept it was more difficult because of the rear motor rim. The rear tire is held in the dropouts by a bolt which is easily loosened. To add insult to injury, once I paid and left the shop I realized the rear brake had not been re-connected. And the seat post was not adjusted back down for my short legs. I took it back and they adjusted the seatpost; but it took two attempts to get the brakes to work. Sadly, this business is going the way of too many others in the Trump era: price goughing with an "I don't care" attitude. Even though I am almost 75 years old, I will find someone else. Unbelievable service, and no hard sell -- they've got a customer for life. It's been 20 years since I last biked regularly (2 stolen bikes in 1 year and I was out), but I recently decided to pick up this old hobby again. I came into Walt's to look at bikes on two separate occasions, test-rode four different bikes in their parking lot, asked a whole bunch of questions (bike tech has changed so. much.), and finally decided on the bike for me. Spiffy Trek 1x10 hardtail bike in gorgeous ORANGE. I was in love. That color had to be special-ordered; I excitedly paid for it and Walt's placed the order, but ... I got a call from them a few hours later that the order was declined because the color had been discontinued. They laid out alternative options for me, and not only did they offer -- without question or hesitation -- to refund me, they told me about an unaffiliated shop 50 miles away that had one of the last of the discontinued models in shop! I agonized for an evening looking at the alternatives, because this gesture alone made me want to give Walt's my money (never mind the great assistance I got on both visits). But the draw of ORANGE BIKE was too strong. My partner offered to drive up and get the rare bike for me, which he did the next day. Dream bike secured, I went back to Walt's later for accessories (cushy seat! ding, ding mechanism!), and the same staff was so nice to me even though I didn't buy my bike from them. The following day, we brought my new bike in to Walt's to get a kickstand added and new seat installed. It was done lightning fast while we waited, no appointment needed. I look forward to frequenting Walt's for all my future accessory and regular service/repair needs. I worked with 4 different techs throughout this adventure, and everyone was so helpful -- but special shout out to Gilbert for being amazing. read more

A friend of mine told me about this place and I needed to get the brake pads changed on my bike. Came here on a Saturday afternoon and consulted with one of the employees. These people are very cautious regarding the pandemic and make you sanitize hands, maintain distance, etc. I appreciated that a lot. They quickly gave me a quote on the parts/labor and accommodated the fix in their schedule. It took them about 25-30 minutes and things looked good after. I like Walt's. They were able to do a proper repair on my Trek FX-3 within the same day, and explain why I needed more parts replaced after they started the repair. That being said, I am dissatisfied with the engineering of the Trek FX-3. The chain and gears do not hold up. I am an engineer, and I understand creep strength. There is no reason the chain should creep so much that it damages the sprocket. Both should have been designed to be more sturdy. Yes, it would have cost another dollar or two and added maybe 200 grams to the weight of the bike. read more

I have a beloved bike that I received as a gift from my parents in 2008. It is a gorgeous beach cruiser, and it has lived a life since 2008: facilitated my rise to leadership in my bicycle "gang" in 2008-2010 (surprisingly popular at the time in my hometown), saw me through college, was borrowed then crashed then stolen (that one saw the loss of a friendship for obvious reasons), was then stolen again and found MONTHS later (thank you, registration with the city), then stored in a garage for years when I had no space for it. Finally, my bike came back into my life in 2020 when I finally had space for it again. Shockingly, all this time the bike had no maintenance needs besides filling its tires. It had no issues whatsoever until 2022 when it decided to just....stop shifting? This is finally where Walt's Cycle comes in. I knew I wanted to support a local business for my bike care, and from the reviews of this place here and elsewhere I decided to come here. I called to see if I needed an appointment and they let me know that I did not, so I came in with my precious bike and felt super well cared for. During the time I brought my bike in for its initial evaluation, I explained the shifting problem and let them know that it is 14 years old and has never had any real bike maintenance and I anticipate it might have some additional needs. I will fully recognize that this could have been a golden opportunity for them to shake me loose from all my money, but they didn't do this at all. The initial worker told me what they noticed about the bike once it was mounted for evaluation, then they got a second opinion from another worker (without first sharing their thoughts about what it needed--I appreciated that they did it this way). The staff agreed and let me know what it for sure needs, and what it might, then provided me with a quote and a time estimate. I agreed and left my precious bike in their hands. My bike was done a couple days early which was AWESOME, and it came in WELL under the estimate (estimate was about $225, actual cost $100 as it didn't end up needing some of the stuff they were still needing to test). I gave it a test drive and felt great, and since then the bike has been absolutely good as new. I am not sure what more you could want: locally owned, honest work, efficient. I am a fan, and I will be back for maintenance and if I purchase any bikes in the future. read more

I purchased a bike from Walt's last year and brought it back in April for its complimentary tune-up. After the tune-up, it started making a noise that wasn't there before, so I brought it back in again. It was an unfortunate hassle, but the customer service most definitely made up for it, and I left smiling! I know nothing about bikes and it was very obvious in my conversations, but Jim (Walt's son) did not take advantage of my situation. Mariano, the tech, was also honest in admitting the issue was still there after attempting to re-oil the cassette. It needed a new cassette. Jim was transparent and honest, explaining the different cassette brands and patiently answered all my questions. The right one wasn't in stock but Jim found alternatives so I didn't have to wait for the back ordered stock to arrive (because who knows when it would arrive?) He ultimately gave me a choice between 2 quality brands which I very much appreciated. The replacement was complimentary for me since it was under warranty, but I'm not sure if those specific replacement parts/brands were completely covered for the shop. He could have easily taken advantage of my oblivion and replaced with an inferior cassette. It would have been much simpler and quicker for him. He spent 1.5 hrs with me trying to resolve this. My bike came out better and smoother than when I first bought it! Thank you so much for your honesty Jim and Mariano! It is hard enough to keep a small family business running during these COVID times and to be honest through it all and possibly losing some profit margin says a lot about their values and mission. Came here on Sunday to try out a specific cycle they had in stock. The older white man who was working there would not let me ride the bike. Not even in the parking lot behind the store. He said they did not have the staff on weekends for test rides. He said I could get on the bike, but he had to be holding the handlebars. I had come into the store intending to drop some serious cash on a bicycle and all the trimmings. But how can I make that investment if I can't even ride the bike?! To make matters worse, another couple leaving at the same time told me they had been able to test drive bikes that day, so I went back to double check with the clerk that I couldn't test ride. He said again it was store policy, no test riding on weekends. But I had been in the store the prior weekend, and test ridden several bikes. The bike I was coming to purchase was one they had built up for me and had called me earlier in the week to let me know it was ready to test ride. With my car in the shop, I had gotten my friend to drive me here to specifically purchase this bike. So it was doubly inconvenient and unprofessional and really soured my perception of Walt's as a good bicycle shop to work with. I will be spending my money elsewhere. read more

Had a great experience shopping at Walt's Cycle shop earlier today. I just needed a replacement inner tube for my mountain bike with a Presta Valve. I first went to Target thinking they have stuff like that... Wrong! Not only did Target not have the correct item, the inner tubes they did have were the wrong size (poor selection) and 2x the price. This was my first time here and they are doing their part and doing everything they can to keep both themselves and customers safe during COVID. We were immediately greeted by a friendly staff member and I explained what I needed. She took us to speak with Beverly and, wow, I was immediately impressed by her knowledge and her amazing customer service. Beverly took the time to look over my bike and called out what was working and what needed to be done. She, also, helped me pick out a new saddle and handle bar grips. There is a very long wait for tune-ups, but I scheduled it, as I want my bike to get the proper care and attention that it needs. Beverly was able to fix the immediate needs of my bike so that I can ride it now. Overall, great customer service and very knowledgeable staff. This is my go to bike shop. read more

One of the employees assisted up and was very knowledgeable to the questions we had. They allowed us to test ride the bikes and were able to take one home the same day. This bike store is a must visit. Very friendly staff. I went in on Tuesday morning and the dealer spent an hour and half going over what bike works best for me. They have a huge parking lot in the back where u can go for test rides. The bike prices were pretty reasonable starting from 350$. One tip would not recommend buying accessories here as they are really expensive. Buy one the other locks they don't recommend in the first go. It's a u lock but about 20 dollars cheaper. Really friendly and attentive staff tho. Amazing visit! read more

Went here after sports basement declined my bike for repair. I was told by Michael at sports basement that he had not dealt with a unque build as my bike. He said that my setup may or may not work and he did not want to take the risk. Now mind you that i was directed to him by his fellow employees as he supposedly had the best info. Unfortunately he did not. So i went to Walt's and found a hidden gem of a mechanic who goes by MARIANO. He did not give me any sort of discouragement as i recieved at the bike shop at sports basement. Very fast quick adjustments to my derailleur hanger and front derailleur for only $25.00. Mariano said that my setup works and he was able to fix it. I 100% would go back with my bike instead of going to sports basement where they make you feel like a dumb@ss. read more

Saturday 7/9/22 bout 11am; I picked up my online ordered parts just fine. Then I asked a middle age heavy set guy that I had questions and needed to buy a raised stem for my specialized cross trail. He told me I had to bring the bike in ..... ? I realize cable length could be an issue yet if he had taken the time to answer my question he would have realized cables wouldn't have been an issue. He seemed pretty rushed, pawned me off to someone else, then told that person to go do something. Little flabbergasted I left. My jogging stroller had a flat and my mommy friends had referred me to the city... That's an awfully long drive for a wheel that needs to be fixed, so I was excited to hear that the local bike shop did jogging strollers, too! I was able to have it repaired in 10 minutes and even got some good recommendations on cycling shoes for my spin class- even though they directed me outside of their store. The staff helped me carry out my stroller and load in my car, since I had the baby with me; the only reason I wouldn't give this place 5 was because it was a little pricier than I was hoping for. read more
