I went to Wheel Away today to have an E-bike I purchased online and was struggling to assemble, assembled. I called the previous day to confirm they could finish the build, discussed a price and time. I showed up only to have the employee there ask if it was an E bike, I said yes. He said "we don't touch E bikes". I said I just need help with a couple of things from somebody who knows what they're doing. He says we won't even change a tire. What's frustrating is I called the day before and explained all this to whoever answered the phone and they said it wouldn't be a problem. I asked if I should make an appointment, he said it wouldn't be necessary because they're very slow. Now I know why. Service sucks. It's clear they don't want to help people. My 12 yo son and I stopped in for a bike lock this afternoon- the on site dog actually bit my son - first bit his shorts then took two bites at his arm - broke the skin and left several welts . Before I ever lived in the area, my dad drove me all the way from the Peninsula to Wheel Away to buy my 1st BMX bike in 1986. Now 36 years later, I recently found myself back at Wheel Away shopping for a new electric mountain bike. While bikes have certainly come a long way since I was last at Wheel Away, the fact that this family-owned business is still one of the best bike stores hasn't changed at all. From the moment I called the shop, Noelle was super helpful in checking inventory to see if my desired bike was in stock. When I showed up at the store, Noelle and her entire team were so helpful at helping me find the exact size frame I needed. And to confirm this, I was allowed to test ride different sizes & models just to make sure. Once I decided on the exact Specialized Turbo Levo Comp that I wanted, Noelle rang me up and had her team start building my bike. When I came back to pick up the bike, I mentioned almost as a joke to Jake that my wife was giving me the 3rd degree for not ending up with the exact color that I had originally told her I wanted the most. What happened next was completely above and beyond anything that I could have imagined. Jake immediately looked up all the local Specialized inventory and was able to quickly secure my desired color from another dealer! He said he would make arrangements to pick up the bike from the other dealer, have it built for me and then I could pick it up in a couple days directly from Wheel Away. I have been a customer of Wheel Away for over 40 years but unfortunately a customer no more. I brought two bikes in for service recently and I do not even think they touched them. I am not sure what happened. I brought one bike back the very next day because I did not feel the fixed the issues I was having with shifting gears. The tech very, very, quickly went through the motions to try and fix the gear issues, even said that something was bent, but did not offer a solution. I test road it and still did not feel it was good but the tech basically said "well it is a mountain bike". Later when my brother was visiting, he could tell by feeling the chain that it had not been cleaned, which you would have thought would be part of the tune up process. I had always thought they were the best of the best. This is why I have bought all of my bikes from them over the years, which included one for my husband. Several years after purchasing my husband's bike we stopped by the store to shop. We were talking to the owner about my husband's bike and he made a comment that they do not sell that brand anymore because they started selling them at Walmart or Sports Authority. (I can't remember exactly what store he said). Well this comment soured my husband's opinion of Wheel Away. Between the poor service of a tune up and the comment on why they stopped purchasing certain brands of bikes because they now sell them at non cycle shops, I will be taking my business elsewhere. I asked a billion questions and went in at least 5 times before actually purchasing a bike. Got a Specialized Sirus X 5.0 all carbon bike that I absolutely love. I have a bad back, which made it all the more appreciated to have Jake help me find the right bike. Then, once the bike came in, the owner, Rick, called to tell me the good news. He was very excited and had a fun way of telling me my long awaited bike was here! Noelle, Mike, and Sawyer were also very nice whenever I had questions or concerns. I dunno who the older gentleman was but he won us on us excellence customer service. We decided to stop by since we had previously looked at bikes at other places and knew what we wanted for the kids. The salesman was patient, knew his product, good with kids, and I did say his customer skills was awesome. We ended up buying one children's bike, since they didn't have the color we wanted we decided to go to another bike store that had the color than wait. The staff reviewed and made sure the bike was good to go, one child was ecstatic!!! We also got her kidded properly for a helmet too. Long story short, we went to a bike place in Los Gatos and wasn't happy with the service that we got knowing that they had the color bikes in stock. Wife and I agreed that we would rather buy our bike at this bike store due to the customer service that we received. We got there 10min till closing bought an additional children's bike and ordered the 3rd. The staff there was awesome. I would highly recommend this place. Jake is the man to see I walked in on a Saturday and the usual lady(and dog)wasn't there so I went to the back and spoke to a man in the maintenance area by the name of Jake. I needed some air but also wanted to get a new seat he took care of everything quickly and efficiently, really knows what he's doing plus he recommended I replace the handlebar grips which were completely worn away so we took care of that excellent service beginning to end and it's just a very unpretentious shop overall. read more

Just purchased a Specialized Creo SL Carbon 2021. Noel and the whole team have treated me really well. I did originally swap out for a Specialized Creo SL5 Comp 2021, but a few weeks after I bought it, Specialized announced their Spring sale in prep for 2022 bikes and dropped the price by 2k. So switching to the Carbon after having ridden the SL5 for a few miles to test @ home was an easy decision. I appreciated very much Wheel Away working with me on the swap and getting the bike from another store (not in their ownership) to get the bike I wanted. They helped me fit the bike and did such a kind job from beginning to end despite the ups and down and time this caused them. I know it's not easy to manage a situation like mine. I got charged $60 for a tube swap and sealant for my mountain bike. I think that's pretty pricey compare to REI who charges around $9 for putting in a new tube (for their member). I didn't go with Rei, which I should have waited, because they didn't have my bikes tube size in stock today. When I asked for pricing, one of the employees told me it was around $25 (my fault for assuming it was around $25 total, not $25 per tire). They did it within 20 mins or so. Wheel Away Cycle Center has changed owners and Rick is no longer in charge of this company. I went into the shop to get a simple chain replaced and also had them look at my break pads. They told me I needed a whole new drivetrain and cusette and it would be about $500-$600 dollars instead of just a $50 chain. I said are you sure, I take really good care of my bikes and I don't think it is in need of that yet. They insisted and I said ok. When they went to change the parts they realized they were not in stock and had to order the parts and said they could do it in a week when the parts come in. I took my bike and went to another shop La Dolce Velo Bicycle Shop and they said wait you are not even close to needing a new drivetrain or cusette. They gave me a new chain and my bike is running like a dream. I called Wheel Away Cycle Center and they were rude and acted like that is what they say to everyone. They did not apologize for the incorrect information and were very disrespectful over the phone and very very rude. I will never go to this Cycle Center again I'm very disappointed that they blatantly lying to up sell me and they are not a honest bike shop!
