Disappointing experience all around. I took my mountain bike in to get the cassette replaced, chain replaced, pedals replaced, and brakes bled. I was told a 1 week turnaround time. A week later I called and was told they would have to call me back later in the day. No return phone call. Called again the next day. Was told that the 9-ring Shimano cassette that they had transferred to LG from another store only had 8 rings. So they had to order another one and it would take 5 days to get it. Not sure when it was discovered there was a missing ring (and how this happened to begin with) but nobody told me about it until a week after they had my bike. Had I known, I might have just had them use a 12 ring cassette instead. So then 5 days later rolls around, I call to ask whether bike is ready, and the person I talked to said the mechanic was taking his lunch. I told them OK no problem just text me once they knew if and when bike was ready. 2 hours went by with no response so I called again. Bike was ready they said. When I went to pick up the bike, I talked to the manager about the subpar communication throughout the work. He flashed me an angry look and said, "What do you want me to do about it?" Really?! Well, apologies are common sense and also free. So there's that. Also...when I got home, I realized that the pedals hadn't been replaced. I looked at the work order and realized the pedals weren't on it. I suppose I should've double checked the w/o when I dropped off the bike, but...I clearly articulated that I wanted new pedals when I dropped off the bike. I picked out the set I wanted with the service person, and they put them aside with the chain I picked out. So this should've triggered the service folks to reach out about the pedals. I'll chalk that up to partially my fault, but good customer service also involves careful listening. I doubt I'll be back to this location (LG), or any other Summit for that matter. read more

Had my fox38 serviced by Summit bike (Ford) Received it back but making noise. I took the bike back, but Ford was on vacation. I had to have Fox rebuild fork due to faulty servicing by this location... Owner would not refund the charge. I had to a claim with my credit card company. The customer service I received from both Ryan and Pancho was outstanding. I would definitely recommend this shop for a new bike purchase. After a long search, I had narrowed the choice of a new bike down to a Trek Domane or Specialized Roubaix. In my initial visit to the Los Gatos shop, Ryan spent a lot of time listening to my needs and wants in a new bike. He explained all of my options and made recommendations based on my specific situation, without pushing or giving a hard sell. The shop honored a 10% discount code which sealed the deal and brought the price lower than any other LBS could offer for either a Domane or a Roubaix. When I went back to finalize the purchase, Pancho spent an hour patiently answering my newbie questions and explaining to me all of details I would now need to know about the new bike. This included the tools I would need, parts and accessories I could add, and insights and advice on future upgrades (power meters, carbon wheels, wider tires). I was new to a number of features on the bike (electric shifting, tubeless tires, disc brakes) and Pancho explained all of these without being condescending in light of my inexperience. The shipment was delayed (not the fault of the shop) and both Ryan and Pancho were professional and apologetic in their communication with me, despite my obvious disappointment with the delay. The bike was assembled as soon as it arrived at the shop, and they proactively coordinated the pickup date and time with me. Worth the trek (pun intended)! I was in search of the Trek Emonda 7 SL and this shop was the only place that had it in stock in my size. Not wanting to wait a year due to the bike shortage, I called and spoke with Colin who put the bike on hold for me with a $1,000 deposit. The trip to Los Gatos from Los Angeles was a tad far (500+ miles) but we lined it up with another task so it worked out perfectly. The shop is located in a cute little village area so upon arrival, we parked on the street and walked to an adorable cafe to grab a bite before heading in. When we arrived at the shop, the door was closed and we briefly waited outside from someone to let us in due to Covid-19 safety protocols. Once inside, we were greeted and promptly assisted. I took the bike for a test ride, loved it and purchased it. The shop had a great selection of bicycles, bicycle equipment, clothing, shoes, accessories, etc. and everything was well organized. Customer service was wonderful. Colin and 2 young teenagers primarily assisted us. But everyone was so friendly and helpful. A big thank you to them esp the teens. I love seeing hardworking youths. I brought my road bike into Summit Bicycles after it had been stored in a shed for years, exposed to mice, dirt, and was simply neglected. They reassured me they could revive it and did a drive train cleaning, tune up, rewrapped the bars, and adjusted the wheels for a very reasonable price with a very quick turnaround. I am thrilled to say it rode the best of all the bikes in our group for a week long road ride of about 375 km. Is 0 stars possible? That's the star rating I'd give this place. I came into this shop and picked up a $400 dollar shoe and was first told "that's a really stiff shoe", ok? I told the owner I wanted to try it out, and then he said "you know it's a $400 shoe right". Again, ok? I tell him my size, he comes back with a different shoe, hands it to me and walks away. No customer service whatsoever. Maybe this shop is really successful where they can afford to be demeaning and then not give any customer service. I headed to Scott's Valley Cycle Sport and dropped $1000 on shoes, cleats, carbon bars, and a stem. Since apparently this bike shop is fine without my business. Keep your "$400" shoe. Btw did I forget to mention, this was the owner? I'll never step foot in this place again. Don't judge a book by its cover or whatever biased lenses you had on. Also I'll be checking back, if this post is removed. I'll just add it again. Nice day! Great Great Great service! When researching bike shops for an upcoming bike build I came across Summit Bicycles Los Gatos. Right from the start upon calling the shop I spoke with Chris. He was very helpful (and patient) in answering my questions, educating me on the process, cost and timeframe for the build. As the build was going to be quite involved (as well as being in a pandemic) he anticipated potential roadblocks and delays in part orders which worked out beautifully. I must say, throughout the 2 months worth of planning, their customer service and guidance never wavered. They were just as helpful as day one. Finally the day came to put it all together. After a day and a half the bike was ready and I couldn't be happier! The shop also has a great selection of products. All employees were friendly and easy going. Pandemic and all, they recognized the county mandate for wearing masks. They promoted social distancing as well, prioritizing health and customer safety which was reassuring. Kudos to Chris and the team at Summit for not only surpassing my expectations but also for doing it with poise and professionalism. I will not be going anywhere else! Thanks! read more

Well, I wanted to like Summit bikes but after 2 terrible experiences I've come to conclude that this bike shop no longer deserves my business and hard earned money. The first time I signed up to do some brake work (bleeding & installing new brake pads) was one of a few horrible experience. After I dropped my bike off, I was called and told my bike was ready for pick-up. Well it wasn't. The rear brakes were not working as before. When I got home, I noticed that the front brakes didn't have the new pads on them, that I had given them to install. After I called them again, they admitted that they threw out my back brakes (brand new) and replaced them with the ones I had given them, to install on my front wheel. Keep in mind, I live 40 minutes away from this place , they wouldn't refund me over the phone. I had to come into the store for a refund. So there goes another 40 minutes there and 40 minutes back. I went there again on 7/7/21 to purchase a shirt, and as I was crossing the street on my bike to the Sumit store, I noticed too many people on the sidewalk, so to avoid them I went in the opposite direction bike lane to avoid 20-30 feet of sidewalk. As I was on the bike lane, one of their employees was in their truck (the truck had a windshield cover to protect from the sun so he clearly should have looked before opening his door) and as I approached their truck, they opened it and I slammed into their door. The employee was in a white Ford Raptor or F150 truck parked out front of the store. Instead of asking if I was ok he was more worried about his stupid truck, I ended up banging up my hands pretty bad. No apologies or nothing from the employee. Pancho, you really need to get your stores aligned man, this is horrible customer service. I'll make sure to let my 150 bike contacts of this horrible incident so they never come to Sumit bikes. Had to give a shout out to Chris who came through for me on an unusual repair. Because of a recent foot surgery I have been using a knee scooter which had a tire that began leaking air. I ordered a replacement tube thinking it would be an easy fix to replace it. It wasn't. After working to get the tire off for a good hour and puncturing the leaking tube I needed to get the tire fixed or I wasn't going to be able to get around. I called Summit and talked to Chris, explained my curious situation and asked if they might have the tools to get the scooter tire off and fixed. He said to bring it by and he would take a look. My husband took the scooter in and although it was difficult, Chris was able to get the little 9" sucker off, replaced the tube and topped off the other tires. You saved the day and kept me rolling! If I ever find myself looking for a bike, I will be headed to Summit! read more

Their online team is a total cluster, none of their reps can help you manage your order and their story changes depending on what day and who you speak to. Absolute worst experience with service of all the bike shops I have been to. I was prepping for a bike packing trip and wanted to take my bike through their Road Bike overhaul, a $300 service that is supposed to include ultrasonic drivetrain cleaning . I dropped it off on a Saturday expecting it back on Wednesday as I was leaving for the trip on Thursday. I paid for a chain, new bar tape and shifter hoods. On Tuesday evening, they give me a call saying that they cannot get the bike ready by Wednesday, but they were considerate enough to offer another bike, which I turned down and I borrowed another bike for my trip from a friend. The following Tuesday, a week later, I was told the bike is still not ready and they would waive the charges. Two days later the bike was ready and when I went to pick it up, I paid for half of it as I didn't want to get the labor done for free. When I took delivery of the bike, I noticed that the drivetrain was as dirty as when I dropped it off and pointed it out that apparently no work had been done on the bike. They then decided to keep the bike for another day and got the work done. I took the bike and did two rides on it, one a short 30 miler and another a full century, when the cables stretched and the shifting on the front derailleur got wonky. I expected this and dropped off the bike for a derailleur adjustment as well as a bottom bracket creak. Two days later , when I pick up the bike, the shifting is as bad as it was with no evidence of any work done. I mention it to the mechanic and he makes a few adjustments but the shifting isn't as crisp as expected. I was asked if I wanted to leave the bike behind but at this point decided it was too much trouble than it was worth to go back and forth with this shop! read more

I don't normally give review of a place unless I had a really bad experience. Well I did:( and here it goes... I live in San Mateo and recently went to the summit bicycle shop in Burlingame to look for a gravel bike. I was interested in the Cervelo Aspero but they didn't have it in my size. They told me that their Los Gatos location had a few in my size. So the next day I drove down there for a test ride. I went in and was greeted immediately by a staff. He was very friendly and helpful. So I took the Cervelo out for a spin so far so good. When I returned, another guy in the shop approached me and appeared to be very annoyed. He had saw me through their shop window that I rode over the grass across the street. I explained that I wanted to test the bike out on some rougher surfaces just to get a feel. After all it is a gravel bike right? :) Well at the end he wanted to charge me $100 because the tires got dirt on them and they'd need to replace them. Right then I thought that was absolutely absurd. I was out for no more than 20 minutes and stayed on pavement for the most part. I was so pissed and just left. I don't know if this place gives any customer service training at all or I just happened to bump into a lunatic. Either way, their manager really needs to look into this. I've test ridden many bikes at countless bike shops, never had anything like this happened to me. It was pure harassment! I was in such genuine interest to purchase the bike from them and now I feel like they don't deserve my business and should just buy it from someone else. read more

If I could give this place zero stars I would. I walked in looking for help picking out a free-ride kit... shoes, helmet, pedals, shorts, pads, etc... and stood there for half an hour trying to get some assistance. Three younger guys were just walking circles while the manager (I'm assuming) was telling another customer how awesome he is and how he has 30 years of experience. I asked one of the younger guys for help and he just told me he was busy and walked off. On my way out I told the manager I was looking for help and couldn't get any so I would be going to sports basement instead... he just shrugged and said "ok" and went back to his conversation... this place sucks and has awful and rude customer service. Our family has been shopping at Summit Bicycles for the past several years and we have always had a positive experience. They have a great selection of bikes, from kids bikes, to road bikes, to mountain bikes. The staff is helpful and very knowledgeable. The mechanics do great work and they keep our bikes tuned up and good to go. They always get our bikes in and out quickly so we can get back to riding. Their newer shop in Los Gatos, Summit Outfitters, is a great one stop shop for hitches and bike racks. We've gotten both of our bike racks there and they placed a hitch on my minivan. Worst shopping experience ever. I made an online purchase. I was giving a ship by date at purchase, only 1 item of the 3 arrived on time and had a tracking number. Other items arrives randomly and separately about 7 days late with no tracking numbers or email communications. Customer service is rude and unprofessional. Managers are hard to reach. Most importantly please read their return policy. If you buy something on sale, or with a discount code, you can no longer return it. What?! They don't let you know that when you are buying online. You will need find that small and almost hidden button on the bottom of the page that says return policy to find out. I buy things on sale from other places and I have never been denied return because I bought something on sale, unless i was clearly warned before purchase. read more

I've bought 4 bikes from Summit Bikes in Los Gatos. Colin has treated me and my wife excellently. He's knowledgeable, dependable, friendly and runs a good shop. The COVID restrictions have made it crazy this year, but Summit appears to be doing things safely and as expediently as possible. They also have a great selection of bikes! Usually a Trek dealer will carry a full line of Treks and maybe one other cheaper brand where they can up-sell you to a better Trek. Somehow, Summit has Trek, Santa Cruz, Evil, Yeti, Pivot, Open -- there are some really nice bikes there! Highly recommend checking them out. read more

I visited them last year and purchased a bike, the size wasn't available so they asked me if I was ok to wait 6 months for shipping. They insisted I go with a larger size to avoid wait time. I did not have a problem waiting as long as I get the right size, since purpose was to ride long distance comfortably. So I paid the whole amount and decided to wait for the bike to be delivered on expected time after 6 months. I started following up 1 month before the due date of delivery to remind and ensure if I will get my bike on expected time, to which they confirmed it was due to be delivered as expected on time. As soon as it approached the due date when I followed up they informed it was sold and un-available again :(   That to me is quite odd because they already sold it to me and gave the due date for shipping then how was it sold again to someone else? Why don't they have a reservation/hold system to avoid selling the same bike twice? I was v disappointed. I wish I was at-least informed but nothing it was only after I followed up did I find out about this. They gave full refund but it is a bummer because I am back to square one and if I had known this outcome I would have put my time and effort on getting a bike in those 6 months period from where I actually had a hope! Another question is if this size has such a huge demand why can't they manufacture enough? It is never available online only option is to visit store and go through the waiting drama which has no guarantee of delivery! read more

Sometimes customer service doesn't start when you walk into a store, it actually starts with a phone call or email. Back in September, I was looking for a Pivot Les in extra small or small, so I was calling and/or emailing several dealers listed on the Pivot website to see if I can sit on one for fit. According to the geometry and size chart, I should be an XS, but wanted to make sure (side note: Pivot actually has a traveling demo fleet, but it didn't include the Les). I've gone down this road before and shopping for a XS or S bike for someone like me who stands at 5"1 is definitely difficult. At any rate, I just wanted to thank Colin for quick responses to my emails. You can certainly tell he is very knowledgeable about all things bicycle related and really cares about his customers. In fact, several weeks had passed from our original emails when he reached out to tell me he was getting an XS Pivot Les in the shop. I'm so impressed he remembered! I stopped by while I was on a ride to see if they could tell me if a friend's bike was repairable. It is about 8 or 9 years old bike and has an elastomer piece in the rear triangle that had deteriorated. I had a few photos and a model but not much more info and to top it off the bike is in LA. Darcy looked at the photos and suggested they take it to a shop near them, however I explained they were not bike people and I was just trying to tell them if it was possible to get the bike part needed from Trek. Darcy went above and beyond by calling Trek directly and sending them the photos I had, from them they were able to id the part and say that it can be ordered. He followed up with this info to me in an email and said they could order it if I wanted too. I would recommend going into their shop and checking out all of the great bikes they have and feel confident they will take care of you now and in the future!! read more

3 frustrating visits and $90 later, my bike is having the same problems (at times worse). To top it all off, I felt that I was not taken seriously because of my gender. As a 30 year old woman, I had to ask my dad to come in with me to finally have someone look at my bike seriously. I hate to say that, but after my 2nd visit, it was very clear that my bike problem was not taken seriously. Details below. VISIT 1: I was having issues with my rear brake. I took it in and they said the rear pad and rotor needed to be replaced. Fine. I left my bike, they ordered the parts, and did the Free Summit Tune Up (because I bought my bike there) VISIT 2: after I picked up my bike, not only was the brake issue still occurring, but it was UNRIDABLE! I brought it in for a simple brake replacement and tune-up, and it was returned with slipping chains, in worse condition than before! When I brought it back just a few days after I picked it up, one of the men fixed the chain issue (without acknowledging that they were the ones that caused the problem in the first place... an apology would have been nice, at least for the inconvenience of having to bring it back) and then briefly looked at the rear brake and told me it's probably just the fact that it is new and needs to be broken in more. He DID NOT even ride the bike to see what type of issue I was experiencing, even though I told him multiple times that something else does not feel right with the brake. I am not super experienced, but I Mountain bike at least twice a week... enough to know when the brake is not working properly. I left feeling like it was me that was doing something wrong with the bike, or that maybe I was just imagining that something was wrong. VISIT 3: A few days later I took the bike out for another ride with my dad, who is a very experienced mountain biker. He listened to my brakes, which were making a really loud squeaking noise and vibrating a lot, and rode my bike to feel for himself. It was pretty clear to him that there was still something very wrong with my brakes, and that it is not just an issue of new pads being worn in. He had never heard anything like it before. Unfortunately, after my last visit, I did not feel like I would be taken seriously if I returned to Summit again on my own, so I asked my dad to come in with me (which is extremely degrading, but it felt like the only way they would believe that I was actually having an issue). The man that helped us this time immediately rode the bike around the block to experience the issue, and he quickly noticed that there was something else wrong. He took the brakes apart in the back and worked on it for a good amount of time. We ended up having to leave it there for a few days, but were assured that they would do everything possible to fix the issue. Overall, they were very helpful and polite this visit. Unfortunately, I think a lot of that was because I brought my dad with me... Even more unfortunately, I picked up my bike yesterday and rode it today, and the brake problem was still exactly the same. While one of the employees was very apologetic and nice when I picked it up (since he knew that this was the 3rd time I had to bring it in) I was assured that everything was in working order. However, as soon as I had it on the trail, the loud noise and vibration was still there, and it felt exactly the same. Needless to say, I will not be returning to Summit Bicycles. They have lost loyal customers in myself and my dad. read more
