Have used Walrath for heating and air conditioning for more than 20 years at our personal residence as well as our Business. Recently during most recent heat wave, our AC quit working on a Friday night. Called Walrath and left message after hours and they called Monday morning and were able to set appt. for Tuesday even though they were booked. Dan in Service was able to maneuver personnel to fit us into schedule and had unit repaired by Tuesday evening . Temperatures were up to 100 degrees these days and extremely uncomfortable for us including for our two year Granddaughter, especially at nap time. I want to alert the public to the unscrupulous actions of this Lakewood-based company. A year ago a serviceman from Walrath Heating and Air Conditioning alerted me that my 20 year-old furnace was on its last leg. He suggested that I plan to save $6000 to $7000 for a new one this fall. In November I met with a Walrath salesperson who evaluated where the furnace was located in my crawl space and advised that the price would be $8000. Two days later his written proposal came in at $10,000. When I asked him about the difference, he said that he had forgotten to add in how labor intensive my particular installation would be. He was certain it would go into a second day. I took him at his word. It took the workmen less than 6 hours to complete the job. The salesman and head of the company - now called Walrath Mechanical - refuse to talk to me about the $2000 extra I was charged for labor that was not required. This is a scam. I have since noted on Yelp that I am not the only reviewer of Walrath who trusted a grossly inflated bid. These guys are crooks. Homeowners like me and managers of commercial properties may have once appreciated this small company. Don't be fooled - they no longer care about you. read more

The service at Walrath is as good as it gets! I've had the pleasure of using Walrath to service the furnace and AC in two different properties that I own in Arvada. They are professional from stem to stem. It's easy to schedule an appointment, the technicians are always on time (or call to let you know of a delay) and best of all, they take care of maintenance and repairs without trying to scare you into buying a new furnace or AC or whatever. I've had great experiences with two different technicians over the past two years. They are really an excellent company! read more

What a life-saver! We just bought a recently remodeled house with lots of plumbing and HVAC problems. So our realtor recommended Walrath, who sent Rich out same day. Rich was fantastic! Found and fixed two gas leaks (the installer had used the wrong-sized fittings ... doh!), replaced wrong-sized duct work, and emptied out one duct that was blocked and filled with a bucket-full of construction debris (gee, i wonder if that's a fire hazard?!). Rich explained everything along the way and was very professional and knowledgeable. I can't say enough good things about Walrath!! PS -- I wish i knew the name of the folks who did all this shoddy work, so i could post negative reviews on Yelp to warn everyone else away! read more

This place is great! I will use them again. They came out to give us an estimate. The gentleman was great. He was on time. He did not try to sell us extras that we did not need. The price was lower then the other 2 estimates we got. We were able to schedule the install of our evaporate cooler with 2 weeks of our estimate. The only reason it it took longer is because I went out of town. They came out and did the install, it passed inspection and we love it. At the end of the season they came out and winterized it and inspected our furnace. This place is great and I would definitely recommend them. Have been a customer of Walrath since moving to Denver three years ago. My evaporative cooler starting blowing warm air (a month after they serviced it) and I called to have someone come look at it. They said someone would come the next day. When the service man arrived, he looked at my water connection, checked a few other things and then said someone would be calling me "from the office." After waiting an hour, I called Walrath and was told that they would no longer be servicing my house because the cooler is on a steep roof. No mention of that when I called and no mention from the service man when he arrived. And apparently, they also have no record of the annual service agreement that I paid for in April. Fortunately, I have a copy so that I can get that money back. Very disappointing the way this was handled and now I have an evaporative cooler that doesn't work. Avoid Walrath! Their business approach is far from transparent. read more

I own a couple of rental condos and a home. Walrath maintains the HVAC on all of them as well as the properties my Partner has. We find them to be well priced, honest, reliable and very responsive when anything goes wrong. On top of all of that their technicians are just that! Technicians not salesmen pretending to be technicians like most of the companies out there. They try to fix things first but when it is time for a replacement they provide a good price and top quality equipment. Today Alan and Aaron had their work cut out cut them. The organization that I work for has used Walrath for our heating and a/c needs for about 2 yrs. In total, we've spent about $8,000 for their services. Recently, I called to get a tech out to give an estimate on the replacement of a furnace for a client of ours who is special needs. She had no heat. I could not get Walrath to send anyone. The person I spoke with just brushed me off and told me to use someone else. I told him that we were a repeat customer and that this was not just any person who needed help but he said he had other customers ahead of us. When the hot weather hit this summer I turned on my AC only to hear some very unhappy sounds coming from my condenser out front. Ughh! It was putting out cool air but sounded like it could blow up at any time. After asking around I called Walrath, they're close to my house and I heard they'd been in business for many years. The woman that answered the phone was very nice and explained that they were crazy busy and couldn't get out for several days, which is completely understandable with temps starting to see the 90's on a daily basis. When the serviceman showed up he was also very nice, he looked at the unit and said it was the fan blade. He showed me where it was bent and said I needed to get a new one for it, and that he'd do some basic service on the unit. We agree to a price and he leaves to get the part. He's back within an hour with a new fan blade, and asks if I can connect his hose so he can clean out all the coils. So far so good, only going to cost a few hundred bucks and it should be good to go. [Insert sounds of screeching tires when they brake really hard]. He fires it up after doing his thing and (surprise!) it's making almost as much noise as before. Next thing I know he's telling me the compressor is bad, and that I shouldn't put any more money into it - after I pay him of course. I ask why he didn't notice this before he said it was the fan blade and he said he thought the compressor was fine so he didn't test it. But now that he is testing it the thing is on it's last legs. He goes on to say that I don't want to pay him or Walrath to fix it because they'll charge me a few grand. He says to go on Craigslist and find someone willing to work on the side, then it'll only be a couple grand. F#$@! Now I have paid a few hundred bucks and am right where I was, except I do have a shiny fan blade and it's fairly clean. He says I can run it til the compressor blows up, at which time it will be a BIG mess. I contacted a friend that knows someone with an HVAC company that does commercial work, thinking maybe I can see about getting someone to help me on the side. I call the owner of the company and he says they also do residential work. We setup a time for one of his guys to stop by and take a look in a few days. When the new serviceman gets there the first thing he says is that it looks like the unit is not level and that's probably what caused the issue in the first place. When he asks if the first guy mentioned replacing the fan motor I said no, he said when they get out of balance it shakes the motor mounts and that's what is making the noise, and not the blade. He says a new motor will take care of that issue, as long as the compressor is not circling the drain. When he hooked up his gauges and tested the compressor all seemed pretty good, not ideal but for a unit as old as this it was actually in very good shape. The best part about the new company was when he told me he'd have to match the new fan motor to the unit and the blade the last guy bought, and he'd have to come back the next day. I'd already taken a couple days off work to deal with this and was worried my boss wouldn't be too thrilled. He said no sweat (pun intended), he could do everything from the outside so I didn't need to be there. He just had me turn on the system inside like I would on a hot day and said when I got home I'd have a cool house. And when I got home not only was the house cool, the unit was running quietly and they leveled it out. Wow, why couldn't I have found this company the first time! read more

Walrath has taken care of my HVAC needs for a few years now, and before my house took care of my Fathers store for many many years. They helped me through months of finding the right solution as one challenge came up then another, In the end all of the issues were worked with or around, my questions were all answered and I now have an evaporative cooling system installed in less than a day including electrical which has been a big issue with my property and it went smoother than expected. Don Downs and the whole Walrath team have been professional, attentive, and creative with finding the right solution to meet my challenging needs at a reasonable price. No No No No No. Spent $400 with them to fix the control board in my furnace (which I was told they were 99% sure was the problem), but that did not resolve the issue. After the tech left for an hour to go get the control board and then spent another hour replacing the part, I was then told it was my thermostat that was the actual issue. Apparently, the replacement thermostat was available and in the technician's car, but it would be an additional $350 to replace. After trying to find a way to resolve the issue for a lesser price, I was told their pricing was fixed and non-negotiable. At that point, my three children's lips turned blue from the snow falling outside so I thought it best to huddle under a blanket together to use each other's body warmth to fight the elements. The technician's tool belt remains at my residence as a result of how quickly he left. We are still cold. read more

This is an addendum to my original review. The guy that turned our system on this year spent a couple of hours on the roof cleaning the swamp cooler which was completely filled with sludge. Something that he believes took more than a year to build up which leads me to believe that although Walrath serviced our system they did nothing more than turn it on and off and add a fresh deodorizer pad in the last few years. We would have gladly paid them for cleaning the unit but they never reported the condition of it to us. Walrath never spent more than 30-45 minutes and sometimes even less turning on and off the system. This guy not only started up the system but also cleaned the sludge from the tray, pumps, and oil fan but also replaced the filter at a cost of $500 which would not have cost as much had the swamp cooler been maintained better. If they knew that the swamp cooler was in this condition why didn't they report it to us so that even if they were not in the business of cleaning it to assure that it remained in good working condition for many years to come we could have hired a company who would. My suggestion to anyone desiring to hire this company, make sure you ask them if they will clean the system if need be and get a quote. read more

Had very disappointing experience today, however the HISTORY IS LESS THAN STELLAR so maybe not surprising. We bought an expensive air conditioner for master bedroom a few years ago through Walrath. They BROKE THE FACE of the unit with the installation and needed to order a new face. AFTER A YEAR we called to check in and they said "Oh we have that here, we didn't know what it was for." Initially, the unit worked well, however, it STOPPED COOLING IN JUST A FEW MONTHS. When they came to evaluate, it turns out the coolant had all leaked out due to the POOR INSTALLATION. They did fix that but clearly installation was not done correctly for two reasons. Recently the unit started making noise. It was a water pump that needed replacement. Two very nice technicians came and replaced it at a significant cost, requiring me to be home for the most of the day. However shortly after they left, the unit STARTED LEAKING INTO OUR HOUSE AND MAKING A TERRIBLE NOISE. But, of course, it is now after 5p on a Friday. We called the "technician on call" and learned that to rectify THEIR MISTAKE it would be a $250 CHARGE JUST TO COME EVALUATE THEIR MISTAKE. So now we wait. Hope the leak doesn't cause water damage that requires more work. Next time we will use another company. read more

Walrath just installed a new boiler in our house, replacing an cast iron behemoth installed in 1969. Although a noisy process, the installation could not have been handled more professionally and without a scratch to the house -- surprising since the service personnel had to saw in half and remove the old boiler through several hallways and up the stairs. The price was fair, not the lowest bid, but nowhere near the highest. A fair deal and a great job makes for 5 stars. read more

We have been customers of Walrath for approximately 15 years. About 10 years ago we contracted with them to replace our evaporative cooler. The primary reason we chose them was their commitment to "service what we sell." We have a steep roof and that commitment was reassuring. This year when the service technician came to perform the seasonal turn on service, he simply drove away. Told his supervisor that he would not work on that roof. I called the owner who returned my call - a few days later. He said they decided that they would not work on roofs like this for safety reasons. That was it. They could use the same safety equipment that hundreds of businesses use in this city every day OR they could have suggested other companies that would do this kind of work OR they could have simply called before the season started to let customers know IN ADVANCE that they would not work on these units. That would have been at least something. To add insult to injury, Walrath called today to say that they would not be able to come today because two of their technicians were out. Guess they totally forgot that they told us last week that they didn't want us for customers. Many of the people that used to make this a good company are gone. Go somewhere else for your HVAC needs. read more

Horrible company, do not call for services. They replaced a thermostat, outrageously priced and then put the thermostat in a different location without our approval. Left the old one in place. Let Dan (the man in charge) make good on what was done but after numerous phone calls and emails, he would not return my call to put the thermostat back in the correct place and repair the holes etc. Horrible customer service - look elsewhere. read more

Started off with a one, but benefit of the doubt because maybe there was a misunderstanding. Needed a new heating system vent pipe through the attic to the rooftop. They told me they are not allowed to do those anymore, they need to do a smaller-gauge side vent, and this btw would require a new furnace too. And that installing it would require them to basically tunnel in, smashing through my foundation. And that until then, I could die from carbon monoxide any moment. Well, turns out that none of this was true. Just now got the double-walled vent installed, easily and cheaply, by a real professional business, on the books and within code. For what it's worth, they sure seem professional and competent. Just too rich for my blood. They were tactful too, describing their proposal to rip out a 15-year-old furnace as simply 'moving up'. read more

I used Walrath for an small office building I purchased a couple of years ago, approximately 1,600 sq ft. The rooftop units needed to be replaced and rather than properly size the units to the building, Walrath replaced with units with units (4 tons each) that were TOO LARGE for the building. One of the units would have been sufficient for the building, but Walrath thought selling two was better than one evidently. I was embarassed when contractors and inspectors subsequently looked at the building and the systems and told me how taken I was, to the tune of about $8,000. I had trusted Walrath on every project up to this time, but I think with the sinking economy, Walrath thought they could make some money. Walrath was good back in the day, but I suggest you be careful these days with them. I will get multiple bids in the future and probably not include Walrath in my bidding process, what a disappointment. read more
