This is a great hotel in the heart of Kitchener. The room accommodations are excellent, the on site food very good and the staff are charming and kind. If you leave the hotel you are in the heart of the city and can make enjoyable walks to historic neighborhoods, local eateries and other amenities like the local parks and museums.

Loved my stay at the Walper. Okay, the reviews about climate control are fairly accurate, but it's an historic building, and the staff did a great job of helping me cool my room down, so it was worth sticking out one steamy night. Hella worth it, in fact, because the room was drenched in style and super comfy. The staff, led by very thoughtful manager Remai, was attentive and responsive. I got the included breakfast at BARRISTER'S and it was excellent. Parking was convenient, the building is beautiful, and it's in a great location. Can't wait to stay again.

I spent last night at the Walper Hotel, a boutique hotel downtown at Queen Street S and King Street W. It was constructed in 1893 for $75,000 after a previous hotel had burned down in 1892. In September 2013, the hotel was bought by a group for $4.6 million and renovated in 2016 . My room was small but cute with some funky touches. There was a safe, coffee maker, iron, etc. My bed was comfy. The hotel is walkable to restaurants and shopping. WIFI was complimentary and was fairly speedy. Two bottles of water in the fridge were also complimentary. There were two options for parking. $25/night for valet parking in the lot to the side of the building or $14.50/night for self-parking in a parking arcade across the street (this is what I did). The hotel staff were friendly. One thing the bothered me was that though there was a thermostat in the room, I couldn't control the heat/air ... you have to contact the front desk. Plus you can't open the window. When I first came into my room, it was 78F. Way too warm and stuffy! I sent a text (they encourage you to text) to the front desk asking that it be turned down to 72F. Someone acknowledged the text and said they were on it. And then I saw the heat go up to 79F! So I sent another text and they acknowledged they were still working on it. I left for supper and when I got back a couple hours later, the heat was at 74F. A couple hours later, it was a chilly 69F. So I sent another text. When I got up this morning, it was 70F ... a bit chilly after climbing out from under the blankets but I didn't bother texting because I wasn't going to be there long. I know it's an old hotel and it would probably cost a fortune to change but not being to control the heat/air was annoying.

Came here two nights starting 8/9/19 despite conflicted online reviews, mostly bad on Yelp, and being willing to give this place a chance. Even my son's boss ripped on this place, but that visit was before the redo. There are many things to love about this place: *location and walking distance to area bars and restaurants *old building exterior *remodeled interior, very nice *pet friendly. I saw my first cat on a leash in the hotel lobby. *friendly staff *our room was fabulous. Super nice double beds, fancy bathroom, even robes. Huge room. *cozy hotel bar with great booze So about the thermostat complaints in the reviews. Our room had a digital thermostat. No problems. Really cool coffee maker I have seen before. Like a French press device. Very good. We love this hotel and will be back. Great deal. Enthusiastic five stars.

    Amazing hotel!

Not enough good things to say about The Walper Hotel. The hosts are even better than the property! Every inch of the hotel is carefully thought out and is on level with any boutique hotel you will ever check into.

Gross shampoo dispensers. Don't know what's in these or how many people have used it before.

Check-in was fast, even with the long lines. What's interesting is that the front desk has these little assorted vitamin tablets to put in your complimentary water bottle. I've never seen that before, but maybe that's what happens in a country with socialized healthcare. I totally appreciate that! The room itself was clean. The AC worked fine. I find that the air can be dry in hotel rooms, but I didn't experience any issues. The lobby has a lot of seating. The on-site restaurant had good food and great service. The staff was VERY patient with my big and loud family, which I also appreciate. The property isn't too far from shopping and restaurants. Though it was summer so the weather was nice. I can't imagine walking in the middle of winter, though I guess walking would be safer than driving for me since I'm not used to driving in the snow. The nearest grocery store is like a 5-min walk so it is doable. I recommend this Marriott property if you need a place to stay in Waterloo since it's close to restaurants, shopping, and the university.

Parking costs additional - $12 per night at time of review. There is a small garage and lot adjacent and a large parking area beneath the hotel. There are electric charging spaces available also. Facilities include an on-site restaurant serving breakfast and dinner. There's also an indoor pool, sauna and gym. If they had just listened to either of us - maybe looked to see what other rooms that card had paid for and called them while we were still there? Terrible rude customer service with the philosophy 'the hotel is always right'. Saturday night when we returned to the hotel at 10pm after a full day of competition and an early morning on Sunday, there was booming loud music. Every half hour - great. But give guests a time to be there and stick to it. I paid more than double the hotels Nextdoor to stay at this Marriott even though I have top tier status at two hotel chains on the same street. The venue provided a coordinator to the couple and that person was changed out 5 times in the year long planning. The day of coordinator snapped at guests saying that she already told us to move to our seats once already. After ceremony it was not clear where cocktails hour would take place. Turns out that it was in the same room as reception so most guests went straight to their seats (no mingling.) The cocktails were great - bartender was fast and friendly. The DJ from the venue package declared that he does not make announcements of any kind as well as his set list was very boring and the music did not flow from song to song to keep the energy up on the dance floor. Dinner salad was sporadically dressed- some people our table got dressing while others did not. Food tasted fine - the cheesecake was served scooped like ice cream which is a different presentation from the couple's tasting. The day of coordinator questioned the cold sparks which were pre-approved (lack of communication with prior contacts.) After clarification, the coordinator permitted the cold sparks. Finally the late night buffet served sliders and fries with no condiments (no ketchup at all!!) The venue specializes in weddings and in my opinionl they are doing the bare minimum.
