    Beautiful hotel

This place is beautiful, came here for a work trip, and as I walk in the reception greets you kindly. Gets you set up really fast with your reservation and lets me know when breakfast, lunch and dinner starts and what they recommend me getting. I got a executive king room and it was really huge, had a very comfy bed and pillows and a couch to lounge and a desk to work. Came down for breakfast and man oh man! They have everything you can ask for! Again the employees here treat you like kings and queens! Would recommend staying here for a comfortable stay. 5 star would recommend to anyone visiting the area!

I spent most of the week at a pension and benefits conference in Kitchener. It was held at the Crowne Plaza Kitchener-Waterloo and that's where I stayed from Tuesday evening 'til today. I had a king executive room. To get to my room, I had to take an elevator to the fourth floor .... then walk down a hallway ... then take another elevator to the seventh floor. It was ($180 plus taxes for Tuesday night and the conference rate of $144 plus taxes for Wednesday and last night). My bed was comfy. You can self-park ($12/night) or valet-park ($20/night) ... we had free parking and I parked it myself. The parking building is behind the hotel (not attached). I parked my car while it was still light ... I wouldn't want to do it at night (it's down an alley) as it seems creepy. There was a fridge and microwave in the room. WIFI was free and a bit slow. I lost it yesterday so used my Internet stick instead. Our conference was on the second floor. When we booked the conference in the spring (I'm on the committee), the conference rooms were supposed to be renovated but they weren't. They were okay, just kind of dated. The hotel is downtown and there are lots of restaurants within walking distance. There seems to be a mall across the street ... it looks old and I'm not sure if it's even open (I Googled and couldn't find a link for it).

As a wedding venue (I've been to two weddings here now), it is ideal. First of all the bar is as long as the room is wide so there is no chance of a backlog at the bar. There are probably 10+ stalls in the bathrooms so plenty of room there and the sound system and DJ booth are all very professional. The venue holds up to 350 people, so it's big. The head table is raised up quite high with an elegant curtain backdrop and stage lighting which makes everyone extra beautiful for photographs. The speeches are also done on the stage so you can always see the speaker. Both weddings we've been to we've been very impressed with the food and service. I believe we had chicken cordon bleu and a prime rib at both. The food really was tender, juicy and flavourful. More than I can say about many wedding venues I've been to. They have a hot table for serving things like a poutine bar or an appetizer table with warm foods. The staff also comes around with hors d'oeuvres during cocktail hour. They have a 3rd level balcony that overlooks the dance floor for bigger parties (like the student events I've been to here). Another perk to the venue: The residences that are just steps away can house guests for much cheaper than any of the local hotels. This is a great place for a wedding, corporate event, Christmas party or whatever else you can dream up. The space is enormous! (Check out their photo gallery: http://catering.feds.ca/gallery.html)

Look for specialties like rouladen, schnitzel, sauerbraten and more. Since it is close to the holidays they have a roast duck special for the month of December (yum!). Prices are very reasonable and service is friendly and knowledgeable. They also are licensed so lots of options for beer, wine etc. We had the duck and schnitzel. Soooo good. The duck came with red cabbage and potato patties. The schnitzel came with home fries and steamed vegetables ( although you could have spatzle if you liked). Please note that even though their online menu shows a variety of salads for those who want lighter fare - the menu handed to us did not show those options. My friend was however able to order a Caesar salad with a grilled chicken breast which she said was wonderful. Her hubby had the rouladen. All the meals were great. We were covering the Black Forest cake at the end but could not do it ( the portions being very generous) so we took some slices to go! Great choice as it was delicious. I cannot believe the embarrassment I felt from Concordia! I thought it would be a nice day/evening out to take our German friends to Concordia for dinner and a few beers. What a disappointment - beyond pathetic! The food was nothing less than a bunch of slop I wouldn't even feed my dog. The old bag serving it was so belligerent even the woman selling the food tickets was shaking her head at the attitude. But enough of the customer service, that I can I get past because that's so typical of Canada anyway. It's the food that I have a real issue with - TOTAL GARBAGE! Lost my appetite just looking at it and just pushed the shit aside. Way to go Concordia, you really represented yourselves well in front of our German visitors. I'm sure they'll have a lot to talk about when they return home. First time in a long time....NEVER AGAIN!!!

It was a summer weekday and although I figured it might have additional traffic with kids on school break, I could tell just by turning into the parking lot that it wasn't crowded. What I did find a little strange was the constant signage and website warnings to book tickets online and not on-site. I guess that might have been an issue in the past but it certainly wasn't a problem the day I visited. I paid my entrance fee and walked the short distance back to the conservatory area. There's really good signage to let you know what species you're seeing, and their habits. What I didn't think of was all the butterfly remains I'd see on the grounds...a little disconcerting at first but ok, what did I expect! The sanctuary is easily accessible. It's very warm and humid, but quiet with the hum of the waterfall. It was great that it was so quiet. There were maybe 2 dozen species of butterflies, and many species of trees and plants. At the back end of the conservatory, there's a counter with large, informative photos naming all the different butterflies and insects, and their distinctive characteristics. There were also pupa hanging, and staff to answer any questions. There were a couple of seating areas. After I had rounded the sanctuary a couple of times, I decided to sit on one of the rocks near the waterfall and enjoy the beautiful atmosphere. I then decided to check out the snack bar/cafe. The offerings included some lunch items and baked goods in addition to the usual beverage selections. One thing I encountered that is one of my pet peeves, is a place that charges full 13% HST on takeout food that's $4 or less. I brought it up to the staff and asked that they enlighten their management on how that works. This isn't some mom and pop corner store and they really should know better. Anyway the cafeteria is large and has plenty of seating space, plus a big patio area out in the back with acres of greenery to look at. There are also some swings and space for children to enjoy some fresh air outside. Last but not least, a visit to the gift shop is mandatory. They had tons and tons of preserved butterflies in frames. They also had a good selection of books and gift items. I liked that they were not the generic same old, same old you often see in other attractions' gift shops. I purchased a couple of things I will use as gifts in the future, and be happy that I won't have to worry they'll already have it or get it from someone else. I would love to revisit in future, and bring a friend with her young child. It's the absolute perfect place to spend a day or afternoon getting some light exercise, enjoying a slice of nature, and recharging your battery.

Check-in was fast, even with the long lines. What's interesting is that the front desk has these little assorted vitamin tablets to put in your complimentary water bottle. I've never seen that before, but maybe that's what happens in a country with socialized healthcare. I totally appreciate that! The room itself was clean. The AC worked fine. I find that the air can be dry in hotel rooms, but I didn't experience any issues. The lobby has a lot of seating. The on-site restaurant had good food and great service. The staff was VERY patient with my big and loud family, which I also appreciate. The property isn't too far from shopping and restaurants. Though it was summer so the weather was nice. I can't imagine walking in the middle of winter, though I guess walking would be safer than driving for me since I'm not used to driving in the snow. As we walked in at around 8pm there was mayhem. Apparently a hockey tournament was staying there. Tons of kids running around screaming by and the parents were not that much better. We assumed we would get a quieter spot and couldn't wait to get out of the lobby and elevator. But ok and behold our floor was even worse. Doors slamming kids screaming. Parents banging on doors. Now I get it. It is a fun time. But we don't have to be in the middle of it with a baby. So I went downstairs and eventually we got a room on the office floor and some breakfast vouchers and a few drink tickets. By this time it was 9:30 or so and our little one was exhausted. And even though we were assured and called months in advance. A crib was in neither room yet. So the manager was very nice and helped. Even brought the crib herself. But if you knew about both (baby and tourney). Why put us in the middle of it. And make us ask to change. In the end it worked out and was not a bad place to stay. Breakfast was decent and had variety. Staff like us were beaten down by the tournament. There is a pool. We didn't see it. Also. We were overcharged and had to try to get our original price to be charged. Another pain. So what may have been a 3.5 stars is now back to a solid 3. There was no hassle to check in or out, which is always a plus for me! The staff I encountered were all very friendly and knew some of the basic questions. Although, I would encourage the staff to maybe know a bit more in terms of what to do. Trails can get boring everyday and reading in a lobby isn't much of a "fun" option for me. The room itself was your basic room with two beds. They do have sleep number beds (although on bed wasn't working- not a good look!) The one that did was fun to play around with and see what numbers you enjoyed. Just a heads up: It may take a few nights for you to figure that out. I've come to learn I don't like soft mattresses as much as I thought! My two issues with the room were the things that took away that 5th star. The toilet didn't flush properly. It was quite irritating to literally hold the handle down until you see the water go down because if you didn't, it wouldn't flush. The pillows aren't your average length pillows, they reminded me more of couch cushions. I found myself constantly falling of the pillow whenever I would switch positions. That doesn't make for a good sleep at all. Other then those two complaints, it was a good stay and I would visit again. Maybe with my pillow in hand next time though.
