I spent last night at the Courtyard by Marriott Waterloo St. Jacobs. My bed was comfy. The room had WIFI, which was speedy, and free parking. There was a mini fridge, microwave oven and coffee maker with coffee and tea. There was a big stand-up shower and no bath tub. There is a bistro in the lobby where you can have breakfast in the morning and drinks at night. There are two restaurants within walking distance but they close early (8pm and 9pm). The hotel is across the street from shopping ... there is an outlet mall and the big farmers market. St. Jacobs itself isn't far (unfortunately I didn't have time to go there).

Nice welcome note, with a complimentary bottle of water and double chocolate caramel popcorn

My rating is the same. It's time to do an update, as I have stayed here several times since my first review and my experiences differ. Normally, you get a survey after your recent stay. I finally got mine today, so these comments are a part of the survey. On a good note, I asked that I stay on a higher floor these days. Generally, it's quieter than staying on the main floor. However, it's not the case at this hotel. More about noise in a bit. I have had no issues with showers since my review. Yay! I recently stayed at this hotel twice. I checked in on January 4th for one stay. My second stay started on January 27th. I had rooms on the third floor, which is the top floor. In both cases, guests on the third floor seem to enjoy having loud conversations at 2 am in the hallway. It happened both times to me. Although I am also a night owl and bring my own earplugs, I truly do not want to unwind hearing boring, obnoxious conversations from folks I do not know when my room door is closed. My January 4th stay did not have a laminated note indicating that you can pick up free earplugs at the front desk. I am sure that I am not the only one who has pointed out the noise level or lack of common guest etiquette. My January 27th trip had this note on my nightstand. It's a good first step. However, there needs to be a reminder to be courteous of others by not having loud, audible conversations late at night in the hallway. Some folks want to get some rest, which is why room doors are closed. The hallway is technically a public area. The walls between rooms are thin to begin with, so I could hear my neighbour's conversation with someone else once he finally decided to go into his room. I didn't sleep well the first night. I did better the second night. And, yes, I had earplugs in during my stay. For some reason, on January 5th, housekeeping did not come to clean my room. I left my room at 10 am and returned at roughly 4:30 pm. Although I am not a slob, it would have been nice to have had my bed made, for instance. I never got an explanation as to why my room was missed. It happened to me on a previous occasion. I was so exhausted from not having a restful sleep that I ended up hanging the do-not-disturb sign and taking a nap when no one is chatting in the hallway. My recent January 27 was better. Housekeeping did drop by, which was great. The only minor detail was that I only got one clean hand towel. Two needed to be laundered, which were picked up. Same goes with a face towel. It was picked up, but I didn't get a clean replacement one. Nothing major. It would have been a nice touch, as it is standard to have daily room service. The housekeeping head (I'm guessing, for she had a clipboard) asked me on Sunday, as we were both going down the elevator, whether I was checking out. I had a purse and a small bag. I said that I was checking out on Monday. She apologized, which was nice. However, I would assume that if you are doing a checklist of rooms to be cleaned that my checkout day would be noted. If it typically isn't, I would recommend that one's checkout date be mentioned. Even better would be to start a conversation without being looped into the mindset that most people leave on Sunday. Although it is typically the case, I was an exception. My checkout date was Monday. On a good note, both times I checked in went flawlessly, thanks to mobile check-in. I got my room cards and got friendly service, which I appreciated. I got a fireplace in my room this second trip. I loved it! (61)

Towels are rough. Water temperature was frustrating - it gets hotter and colder randomly as you shower and the water responds very slowly when you change the temperature setting. Rooms are clean and I do appreciate the pullout desk. Accessible king room is smaller and lacks sitting area. Breakfast provided with breakfast voucher with corporate rates includes either 2 on-the-go items, or one breakfast item. Sometimes a chunk of the hotel is rented out to tour groups or conventions making it difficult to book from time to time. Air conditioning wasn't sufficient to keep the room cool in Fall. The air conditioning did kick on loudly periodically, but for some reason it wouldn't stay on long enough to cool the room to the desired temperature. Service from all staff including all the housekeeping staff greeting you as you walk down the hallway is excellent. We made use of points on one personal stay, and corporate rates on other stays which came with a discounted room rate and breakfast voucher. Received a welcome gift of a bag of caramel popcorn and bottle water and letter. Parking is free. Location on the north end of Waterloo is great if you're planning to visit the farmer's market or Jack's Family Restaurant (one of my favourite restaurants in Waterloo) and both are within walking distance. There is also a small outlet mall close by.

Despite a sign suggesting the windows might open, they didn't. :-(

We had tickets for the theatre, so we decided to stay over. Generally nice hotel but not perfect. Good location, good parking. Good number of power outlets in the room! Staff were extremely helpful. We booked a whirlpool/fireplace room - unfortunately despite the efforts of the helpful front-desk person, the fireplace wouldn't work. Disappointing and took away from the intended ambience of the room and the stay. :-( A couple of minor criticisms, (1) Windows didn't open (despite a sign giving false hope that they would) :-), (2) The glass shower door in the bathroom was slightly misaligned and when warm would scrape scarily against the fixed glass. (At some point this glass will break from the repeated wear), (3) Some paint or dirt on a wall fixture in the bathroom didn't telegraph a message of cleanliness.

Check-in was fast, even with the long lines. What's interesting is that the front desk has these little assorted vitamin tablets to put in your complimentary water bottle. I've never seen that before, but maybe that's what happens in a country with socialized healthcare. I totally appreciate that! The room itself was clean. The AC worked fine. I find that the air can be dry in hotel rooms, but I didn't experience any issues. The lobby has a lot of seating. The on-site restaurant had good food and great service. The staff was VERY patient with my big and loud family, which I also appreciate. The property isn't too far from shopping and restaurants. Though it was summer so the weather was nice. I can't imagine walking in the middle of winter, though I guess walking would be safer than driving for me since I'm not used to driving in the snow. The nearest grocery store is like a 5-min walk so it is doable. I recommend this Marriott property if you need a place to stay in Waterloo since it's close to restaurants, shopping, and the university.

Bathroom is large and well lit and the towels are nice and large. Front desk staff were friendly and helpful. The free WiFi is very good or you have the option to upgrade if you're doing something that requires a lot of refreshes. We had no problem watching Netflix and doing work without the upgrade. Parking costs additional - $12 per night at time of review. There is a small garage and lot adjacent and a large parking area beneath the hotel. There are electric charging spaces available also. Facilities include an on-site restaurant serving breakfast and dinner. There's also an indoor pool, sauna and gym. Everything is clean and modern and the central location can't be beat - highly recommend.

Decided to spend Christmas 2024 in St. Jacobs at the Homewood Suites by Hilton. Phoned hotel to see…read moreif room had been cleaned and early check in was possible to which front desk confirmed both. Arrived. Front desk girl, Macklyn, was polite and friendly and gave us our key cards to room. Upon entering room, noticed that room had definitely not been cleaned. A magnet was still affixed to the door on the outside alerting of a pet in the room (and we had NO pet with us). The tile floor in the kitchen had not been swept. The dishwasher was loaded with dishes. There was soap scum and hair in the tub and only one towel for two people for a 3-day stay. Beds looked hurriedly made. Frantically drove to nearby Dollarama to pick up basic cleaning supplies (on Christmas Eve) to clean room only to discover the sole light that was over the tub/shower was leaking water. Informed front desk and they asked me if I wanted to change rooms. (Were pleasant and accommodating but seemed truly unfazed by the situation). Changed rooms and newest room, while slightly better (in terms of having been cleaned), detected a faint pet odor in bedroom. Again, dishes had been left in the dishwasher. Retrieved a couple of bowls from cupboard to find food caked on them. BREAKFAST: continental. Not huge selection, mostly cold options such as yogurt, muffins, fruit. Sufficient space to accommodate seating and tables were clean. Was surprised to find out that there was no 24 hr coffee made available to guests in lobby/restaurant area - just water with lemon. Also, Manager's reception is usually offered each Wednesday (and Christmas was on Wednesday), but they did not offer that. Instead, Front desk told me to call the following day to inquire if something was "going to take place." I guess they were unsure themselves? Called Christmas Day at 3pm to see if anything being offered in lobby/restaurant area. No answer at front desk. Phone rang at least a dozen times. Made numerous calls in the span of 15 minutes and no one picked up at front desk. Went down at 5pm (as that is when the Manager's reception would normally be, from 5-6:30pm) to find out that there had been a few trays of cookies and squares and hot chocolate. By then, only a few squares and cookies remained. The hotel could have informed their guests by a note on their door, or a courtesy call to inform when they were planning on putting out something. Should not have been the guests responsibility to call down to see when or if something was taking place. Disappointing, to say the least! CHECKING OUT: Upon leaving, I called down to front desk to see if housekeeping or busperson (do they still have those?) could bring up a luggage carousel and no one was available to do that. Up to the guest to be responsible for that. OVERALL IMPRESSION: will not be returning to this hotel again. Advice: fire housekeeping staff or at the very least, retrain staff and follow up by checking rooms to ensure highest cleaning standards are being met. (I also note that when I had to go down to return my old room key, another guest was complaining of their room not being clean, mentioning that their dishwasher was stacked with dishes, not having been unloaded). I was compensated with two bottles of complimentary water for our troubles in having to switch rooms. No monetary offer to reduce the amount on my total bill, or an offer to stay a free night. Just an overall frustrating experience.

As many of you know, I travel quite a bit for work. I am in a hotel around once or twice a week. I am the people that they should want as I decide when and where to book. It's easy on the app and I get a decent price. Some of the time, I get to a hotel and they see I "APP-BOOKED" - you heard it hear first as I'm going to coin this as it's not even on Google - and I get a whole less level of service. Anyway, I app-booked and before the frontdesk realized it, he did ask me if I wanted to be closer to the front or the back of the hotel. I told him front. After not finding my booking, he asked me how I booked. He then told me to call them in the future and they would match the rate. Well thanks but that doesn't get me my 10% reward and special online services. Nonetheless, he hands me my key and I ended up trekking all the way to the BACK of the complex. Let me tell you, the place needs work and it's so outdated, it shows. By the time I got into the room, it was very pretty bad. The room looked unkept and a layer of dust had formed on the furniture. The place was as welcoming as an episode of Bates Motel. I ended up tossing the bed to look for bugs. Been bitten once, forever shy. I heard rushing air pass through the windows and I went to see what it was. The window frame was loose and even the screen was bent out of whack. I pushed the window closed and got a handful of cobwebs. Where there are cobwebs, there are spiders. A big freaking spider was looking at me like I was fresh meat. There was a dead wasp on the window sill and mold! I packed up and off to the frontdesk I went. I had the APP company on speed dial and ready to check out. I told the guy that this was less than acceptable and I asked if he would like to see all the photos I took - he was curt and told me he "believed me." WTF...you believe me? That means you know that room you gave me was Bates-worthy! In the end, he offered me the renovated suite. Which turned out to be better - but I had to downsize to a smaller room. The hotel parking lot was pretty empty so why the heck would you put me in the un-renovated room in the first place. App-booked peeps are still customers. I'm a frequent customer in the area and this would not be the place for me and it won't be for my associated either. It is never a good idea to mistreat anyone, especially frequent App-Bookers! They then called us back and said we could check out at 11:30... they gave us a half hour more. This was almost insulting! We stay at a lot of hotels and these guys were not interested in helping or being a little accommodating at all! Most hotels are pretty decent about offering a later check out especially the Hampton Inn in the United States and the holiday inns in Canada.
