Those chain places lured me in with tempting sounding discounts that I could never actually apply once I had my exam and was looking at actual eyeglasses and frames choices. Also, they could never send me timely reminders for my next exam, and the optometrists didn't seem to listen to my specific needs. Here, Dr. Merkle first did a very thorough screening, which is very important to me, and in fact referred me to a ophthalmologist because of some early warning signs, the main reason to have regular eye exams of course. She paid close attention to my specific needs and came up with an expensive solution of three progressive glasses, one for driving and lectures, one for computer work and reading music, and one for riding my bicycle or getting smacked in the face. She is the very first optometrist to understand that for me, work means reading something an arms length or two directly in front of me. I did get a deal for the three glasses, the total price was about twice as much as I paid for my previous single pair of progressives (one pair of eyeglasses, what an awkward phrase), and I had to always take those off to read a book and were really hard on my neck to read music or use a computer. Good selection of frames, a couple of helpful workers in the front, Danielle and Theresa (or Tracy, I can't remember), overall a very good experience.

I was a patient of Dr. Dahlgren's who had an office in West Allis for almost 25 years. I was not notified when they moved their office to Greenfield. Fine. I had no problem driving to Greenfield. Dr. Dahlgren had been semi retired for several years so I was just happy to still get an appointment. Then I find out at the end of last year that he had retired. I don't know when. I found out when I called to make an appointment. It would have been nice to have gotten a notification both times. When the person offered other doctors, I just hesitated. It really bothered me that his patients got dismissed. It's a nice office, things look great and I don't doubt that the quality is top notch, but it's apparent that profits are more important than people. That just made me feel horribly dismissed.

They did it to me on a pair of glasses and it ended up costing me nearly $200 more than they said. They also do not check whether you are eligible for an eye exam as they did with my wife last year. She was about 3 weeks early, they did the exam, charged the deductible then billed me for the balance AFTER THE FACT. Another $85 that I was not expecting to pay. This year we will use another provider and all years going forward.
