I ordered the apple tart (£4) and the waitress was amazing at keeping us informed in how long it would take for food to arrive as they were pretty busy. The tart was super tasty and I really liked it, although I only ate the filling. The decor is lovely - similar to the Butterfly and the Pig in a shabby chic kind of way, and it really works well in the dining area. I do feel like that lovely atmosphere is a little lost in the rest of the bar but perhaps that will come with time.

The atmosphere was welcoming and warm, the rugby was on the telly, and it was moderately busy; always a good sign. Having said that, as Briony C. also pointed out, they have many half pints at £1.50 which is really good value. I saw a few people ordering and receiving food while we were in, and although I can't comment on tastes, the food looks very delectable and it smelled divine. The ramen is thick and hearty--less soupy than in a traditional Japanese place. The bar is a classic beer-heavy pub. Service is friendly. They have variations on music--one night was a DJ spinning, another night was a Celtic kitchen band. Another night just their staff spinning vinyl. There's not a tourist in sight. Redmond's is a nice looking, welcome pub from the outside and lovely and cosy inside. Tweed booths and tall benches mean there's seating for every occasion - on a Thursday lunch time it was pretty quiet though so I grabbed a window seat. Looking over the menu there's a good selection of bits and pieces like flatbread pizza (and mini versions), salads and the aforementioned steamed buns (chicken, pork, mushroom and prawn). I like the menu - it's different from most pub offerings and it's refreshing to see something a bit different. The guy working was super helpful and welcoming, and suggested the pork bun, but as I was just after a snack I thought I'd stick with what I love and ordered a chicken bun. The chicken is crumbed in panko breadcrumbs (the delicious, super crispy kind) and has a hot mayo sauce with it. The bun is £4 or you can get a side with it for £5.50 (soup, salad, wedges). The bun arrived quickly and was nicely presented with a wee garnish of salad. I took out the cucumber as I'm really not a fan, and bit into the bun. Then, I giggled. Yeh, sometimes I giggle when I eat, what of it? That's when you know I'm really happy. The bun was perfectly pillowy soft and delicious. The spicy mayo gave it the right amount of kick, and the chicken was crispy and tender inside. YUM. The bun does have a tendency to stick to your teeth a little but just keep wolfing it down and enjoy. I enjoyed everything about this pub - the decor, the music, the staff and the food. This is a very traditional pub: all the punters sit at the bar with their next 2 drinks lined up in front of them and spirits are served in large measures. Multi-coloured disco lights illuminated the lounge next door, and through the opening and closing of the adjoining door, we could hear clubby, up-to-date music and see a younger crowd. Soon after a live comedian and (admittedly not very good) singer began a set which looked to be very popular. From the one drink we had, it was hard to get a feel for the place, but, although not as friendly as Ramsays along the road, there was still a pretty good atmosphere in here. We took a seat in the lounge area as the bar was pretty heaving for 1pm on a Saturday (those damn subcrawlers!) and enjoyed the atmosphere and hospitality of by far the friendliest bar staff I've encountered in a long time. Over they came to take our photo, find out our story and give us tips and advice on completing the subcrawl. They even have maps for you! That is SO cool and was very handy later on when I'm sure some people didn't know where they were (um, like me). Well, what it does not have in terms of polished finishes and decor is made up for by the friendly atmosphere and great array of beers on offer. The staff could not have been more welcoming. They supplied Subcrawl maps and made a point of coming out to chat with us. The even took our photo as they take records of all the "subcrawlers" who pass through their bar. I must admit, I stuck to a boring bottle of becks on the drinks front as I was being very careful what alcohol I took on at this early stage.
