I don't normally buy 1/2 pints of Strongbow but it was a very cheap £1.50 something which I was very impressed with ... maybe that's a standard price? Who knows. We came back looking for some dessert and while the seating area was nearly full, they stretched us over two tables which was nice. I ordered the apple tart (£4) and the waitress was amazing at keeping us informed in how long it would take for food to arrive as they were pretty busy. The tart was super tasty and I really liked it, although I only ate the filling. The decor is lovely - similar to the Butterfly and the Pig in a shabby chic kind of way, and it really works well in the dining area. I do feel like that lovely atmosphere is a little lost in the rest of the bar but perhaps that will come with time.

The atmosphere was welcoming and warm, the rugby was on the telly, and it was moderately busy; always a good sign. My only slight gripe is that it cost the better part of ten squids for two pints of Blue Moon. Having said that, as Briony C. also pointed out, they have many half pints at £1.50 which is really good value. I saw a few people ordering and receiving food while we were in, and although I can't comment on tastes, the food looks very delectable and it smelled divine. It was also great value for money also; I don't think any of the mains cost more than a tenner. I'll be back Duchess...

The ramen is thick and hearty--less soupy than in a traditional Japanese place. The bar is a classic beer-heavy pub. Service is friendly. They have variations on music--one night was a DJ spinning, another night was a Celtic kitchen band. Another night just their staff spinning vinyl. There's not a tourist in sight. This is a place of locals--but they made me feel welcome. An outstanding spot.

And what I was really interested in were the steamed buns at Redmond's - that sounded like something I needed in my life. Redmond's is a nice looking, welcome pub from the outside and lovely and cosy inside. Tweed booths and tall benches mean there's seating for every occasion - on a Thursday lunch time it was pretty quiet though so I grabbed a window seat. Looking over the menu there's a good selection of bits and pieces like flatbread pizza (and mini versions), salads and the aforementioned steamed buns (chicken, pork, mushroom and prawn). I like the menu - it's different from most pub offerings and it's refreshing to see something a bit different. The guy working was super helpful and welcoming, and suggested the pork bun, but as I was just after a snack I thought I'd stick with what I love and ordered a chicken bun. The chicken is crumbed in panko breadcrumbs (the delicious, super crispy kind) and has a hot mayo sauce with it. The bun is £4 or you can get a side with it for £5.50 (soup, salad, wedges). The bun arrived quickly and was nicely presented with a wee garnish of salad. I took out the cucumber as I'm really not a fan, and bit into the bun. Then, I giggled. Yeh, sometimes I giggle when I eat, what of it? That's when you know I'm really happy. The bun was perfectly pillowy soft and delicious. The spicy mayo gave it the right amount of kick, and the chicken was crispy and tender inside. YUM. The bun does have a tendency to stick to your teeth a little but just keep wolfing it down and enjoy. I enjoyed everything about this pub - the decor, the music, the staff and the food. It won't be long before I'm back.

It's cozy, crowded, and buzzing with life -- often standing room only and packed shoulder-to-shoulder with locals and travelers alike. If you're a whisky fan (or even just whisky-curious), do yourself a favor and try one of their Scotland whisky flights. It's like taking a mini tour of the country's whisky regions without ever leaving your barstool -- and without worrying about driving. The bartenders really know their stuff and are happy to guide you toward something you'll love. A quick heads-up: no football colors allowed, which keeps the atmosphere friendly and relaxed no matter who you support. And speaking of friendly -- the locals here are as welcoming as they come. This is exactly the kind of place where Scotland's famous pub culture shines. Prices are surprisingly reasonable too, so you can sample a few drams without feeling guilty. Whether you're a seasoned whisky nerd or just looking to experience the local vibe, this is the spot. Pull up a stool (if you can find one) and enjoy a proper Scottish night out

Their selection is so huge they don't have a menu, you just have to ask for your label or take their recommendations. Naturally, most of the selection is Scottish whiskey, but if you somehow prefer otherwise, (say you are a local tired of Scotch... or just want to reaffirm nothing beats a Scotch?) they do offer whiskey from other countries, as well as beer and ciders, as well as gin, rum and the like. They do offer pies and other bar food, but we went after dinner and just couldn't stomach more food, tempting as they may sound.

This is a wonderful addition to the Calton area and I hope it does well. The church interior has been lovingly preserved, even down to the pulpit sitting at one side of the stage, and the organ pipes provide a fine backdrop and a reminder of the venue's former incarnation. I wonder if the organ still works? I also noticed a cinema screen overhead so I guess they may show films? Or maybe it's just for presentations? The funky purple lighting didn't seem sleazy at all, although it could easily have done. Even the installation of the necessary sound and lighting technology didn't manage to detract from the beautiful architecture. Through a curtain to the right is the bar/restaurant area, which we didn't try on this visit. It has an American diner-style menu, with ribs, steaks, burgers, open sandwiches and pizzas being the mainstays - although I was pleased to see that they do have a couple of veggie options and even a vegan nut loaf. Parking is pretty straightforward on the street outside, or there is a tiny car parking area behind the church that holds about 6 cars.

And I didn't just want to like it; I wanted to love it, heart and soul. But I don't. And I'm really, truly sad about that. Sinceriously. The conversion itself is awesome - the building has been beautifully restored, and the space utilised pretty well. But it had a really weird, tense atmosphere when we visited at the weekend. Bordering on hostile. And the music was just insanely loud for a bar that wasn't even half full. I probably wouldn't go back at the weekend - but I'll definitely so in for a midweek drink sometime.
