He instead found everything else to do behind the counter until finally a nice lady bussing tables helped us. As for the food I thought the ribs were tasty, Mac & Cheese I found to taste bland, and the potato wedges I got seemed like they were under the heat lamp for a while because they had no moisture. We've been coming here for years but last night was the final visit . It was so cold in there. Patrons kept their coats on while dining. It didn't seem terribly busy and we were promptly seated at a corner table. It was just me and my mom. The waiter was friendly and quickly took our order and brought our sodas. We received our food and he came back a few times and checked on us. He came by one final time and mom asked for a box and the check then Mr waiter ghosted us. He was there.... serving the tables on either side of us ... while we sat ... and tried to get his attention but his back was always towards our table. We pushed our plates to the side and continued to wait while he made small talk with the tables next to us. 45 minutes later we gave up and left . For starters they bring out a what tasted like green chili's or jalapeño corn bread and their iced tea (sweet or unsweetened) were served in a mason jar. (loved it) I ordered the regular size brisket with hefty sweet potato fries. The BBQ sauce was served on the side, family style, in a small iron skillet, so you can contol the amount of sauce you want. I initially drizzled mine as I wanted to taste the brisket and after my first bite...wowza, I doused it with BBQ. it was good. The brisket was all meat, unlike some establishments, they give you slices of fat! not this place... Truthfully I don't know how this restaurant has so many good reviews. Beef was dry, country ribs were dry, sides were horrible (as in I've made better Mac and cheese from a box). Thought maybe the peach cobbler was better... and nope even their peach cobbler was dry as a bone. I know Arizona is dry but does the food have to be too? The only good thing we had was the pulled pork which was actually juicy. Beyond that nothing here was worth getting that we tried (had the sampler platter and Tennessee sampler). I've been going to Waldo's for about 6 years now. Tonight's baby back ribs and brisket sandwich are no exception. Sooooo goooood. Ever since we found them, my wife and I have loved them. I've had several other BBQ's in town and this is by far the best of the best. We had them cater our house party about 4 years ago and everything was perfect. The ribs are always juicy and tender and the green chili mac and cheese is excellent. Brisket and pork are spot on as well for making great sandwiches. If you had a bad experience you are either making it up or probably a self entitled newbie that has no idea what good food is. Go back to McDonald's. Sadly I am moving and will not be able to enjoy this awesome bBQ for some time. I am looking forward to the next time I can visit. read more

Have lived near this place for 20 years and never ate there. Tonight was watching Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives with Guy Fieri and he was at a bar-b-que place so we decided to find a place to eat cause it sounded good. Had the Waldo sandwich with brisket and pulled pork and it was amazing. Also, ordered a half rack of Baby Back Ribs and they were incredible. Holy cow! We are from SoCal and happened to be in Mesa for a wedding. We asked the gal at the front desk of our hotel to recommend a restaurant for dinner. Waldo's was her first recommendation and we took her at her word. When we arrived (around 6pm on a Sunday), there were a lot of people waiting outside. We were told it would be about a 30 minute wait, but a guy from Wisconsin that was also waiting told us "stick around, it's worth it." Boy, was he right. My pork sandwich was delicious and I was very impressed to know the baked potatoes are all you can eat! They even offer butter and sour cream for the potatoes. What a disappointment tonight. Walked right in and got complete attitude from the waiter/manager named Scotty I think. He argued about what was on the menu when we were asking if we could get a side of BBQ Beef. Got our meal and it tased as good as usual but "Scotty" kept up with the attitude. Asked if I disrespected or offended him and he said yes with two responses. He even mentioned if we'd like to complain to contact the owner Frank. He gave us a number on the menu. I paid the meal and got some Togo boxes, couldn't even finish our meals. One of the other waitresses came by and apologized for his attitude. Really let down by his service. Their sampler, which I ordered, includes moist pulled smoked chicken, sliced moist beef brisket, and Pulled smoked Beef, topped with a warm skillet of BBQ sauce??? Forget about it. I'm in heaven. Accompanied by an ice cold local beer and the Naughty Palmer?? Stick a fork in me-I'm done!! Been an irregular customer of Waldo's probably 20 years. BBQ was better than most. However since CoVID, I've not been satisfied with my visits. The kitchen seems yo have lost the ability to serve hit food. The last 3 meals I' and my guest have had have been tepid, almost room temp rather than piping hot. Things ordered fresh out of the deep fryer, like okra are hor. But the BBQ itself, the main event, has been served barely warm. I sent mine back to the kitchen to be heated. And at last visit my guests French fries weee practically cold. Don't know the issue is; but it's been persistent over my during the visits over the last r months. Met my boyfriend here on my lunch break. I have seen this place every day since working in east Mesa and we finally went. It was great!! Super divey, large open space, nice staff and good BBQ. The chicken was smoked and was excellent. I got it on top of my salad. Portion size was huge, the BBQ sauce excellent and the complimentary cornbread while nothing to write home about, I di like the jalapeno bite in the cornbread...good. My boyfriend got the pulled pork sandwich, Memphis style with coleslaw on it. The slaw came on the side instead of on it so her didn't eat it, I tried the slaw and it was good. His pulled pork sandwich I wish I could write about the flavors etc but he ate it all, and loved every bite. I had Waldo's BBQ provide catering to a group of 60 people. David, the head caterer, covered everything in the first meeting as to what deposits are due when, various food options, price points etc. A week before the event, I met with David again and everything was in order. The day of the event, Waldo's crew, David and a crew member that has been with Waldo's for over 10 years, arrived 15 minutes ahead of schedule, set the food line up, served the people and then prepared the left-over food for me to take home. Well, I must say the BBQ was outstanding. Even other cooks and chefs in the group were impressed at the quality, taste and smell of the food. The BBQ sauce is a favorite of mine and the guests raved about it as well. Now here is the sign of a business that really cares, David called me 2 days later to make sure we did not have any issues and that we were pleased with the food! This level of customer service is very rare to find. Would I recommend Waldo's BBQ for catering? YES! Would I recommend Waldo's BBQ restaurant on Main St in Mesa, AZ? That is a double yes. This barbecue joint has been here forever and deserves to continue serving good basic 'cue. One of the few places that serve beef ribs, really good ones. Another specialty fried corn. The coleslaw is exceptional and they keep it coming. Baked potatoes are another nice item, and pork wings. The sauce is not so central as in many restaurants, but it's quite good. The decor is divey with wood shavings on the floor and white paper table coverings. My one negative was the onion stack, which was served only slightly above room temperature. read more
