The setting is what you would think of for a great bbq place - lots of signs and decorations with things to make you laugh. Noise level was medium (also what you'd expect) with classic rock 60s-early 80s in the background. The staff was great! Our waiter was exceptional! It was our first time and the waiter explain everything to us and gave us suggestions. The food was delicious. First visit here, for my son's birthday with a party of 5. We ordered the 4 choice Hog Wild Sampler, and the BBQ nachos with pulled pork and the jerk sauce. The nacho plate was very large and had copious amounts of meat and cheese on it. Excellent flavor to everything, and it had real melted cheddar on it. The 4 sampler had pulled pork pig skins (1/4 baked potato with choice of meat), Chicken fritters (we asked for ranch to dip them in) Waldo Wings (we chose Louisiana hot sauce) and Kansas City Pork wings. The pork skins had a heaping serving of meat on top of it. My preference would have been toward a crispy outer potato skin, but they were still excellent. The chicken fritters were slightly over cooked but still good. They had a crisper outer breading to them. The pork wings were comparable to me, like spare ribs on the bone, they were very good. The wings had a crispy outside and cooked perfect, the sauce was mildly spicy. The cornbread was excellent. It had a very very miniscule amount of jalepeno in it, so subtle to the point of not really being noticeable. It also had small kernel yellow pieces of corn in it. My wife and I ordered the Super Sampler we chose brisket, pulled pork and chicken. The brisket was tender with a decent size smoke ring to it. Surprisingly I didn't notice a heavy wood flavor. The chicken breast had a heavier wood flavor but still not overwhelming and not dry at all. Pulled pork excellent as previously discussed. The ribs were perfectly cooked. Now some will say fall of the bone is actually over cooked, but that is how I like mine, and these were that way. The meat was juicy and tender. The coleslaw was a decent homemade style. I prefer mine sweet, but this one wasn't. It was still good though. It had green and purple cabbage, and carrots. I tried the mac and cheese, average. The potato salad tasted brought in, but decent. I tried my sons french fries. They were hand cut fries in between shoes string and standard fries. They had the home cooked flavor to them. I tried a piece of my sons fried okra. I felt it was overdone, and could have used larger pieces of okra in it. I tried the cowboy beans (pinto), they weren't BBQ, but did have a good flavor to them. My son and his gf had the burgers. They opted for the avocado on top of it. It was a very large amount of avocado. They said it was very good and perfectly cooked. We tried the bread pudding. It was cooked just right with some crisp to the edges, topped with whipped cream, and had white chocolate on it. An average bread pudding. I detected some mild underlying bitterness to it I couldn't identify. It was distracting from the sweetness. I found Waldo's to be a great experience overall. I thought the appetizers could be tweaked a little based on my personal choice, but would still be pleasing to the general population. Our waiter was Scott, he was excellent and was on top of everything constantly. He was extremely personable. Update: We came back on Friday night. I had the All-you-can-eat Catfish. I tried both the fried and blackened. The fried was incredible with a corn meal coating. It was cooked absolutely perfect. I liked the tartar sauce as well. The blackened catfish was in my opinion more of a pan roasted, but definitely not blackened. I didn't taste any of the traditional blackening spices at all. It is possible they forgot to put it in the spice mixture, but unlikely. It was still very tender and perfectly cooked. The wife had the BBQ salad. It had a massive helping of pulled pork on top. This OG Mesa BBQ spot never disappoints! The pulled pork sandwich is piled high with large hunks of tender flavorful pork on a large tasty bun and your choice of a side. I came to Arizona to sample the bbq and Waldo's is the first place I visited. Smoky scent of mesquite wood filled the parking lot. Tractor, smoker in the parking lot and neon signs gave this place a rustic ambiance . Inside were many cool looking items. Menu was huge so I tried the super sampler to get a good variety of meats. Baby back ribs were tender and full of smoky flavor. I enjoyed them a lot. I added some bbq sauce and the sweet tangy sauce gave the ribs additional moisture and flavors. Turkey was full of smoky flavor. Brisket was tender and had mild smoky flavor. Pulled pork was very tender and had mild smoky flavor. I like Waldo's Bbq. I've been going to this place for over 20 years so this review is long overdue. I truly believe this is the most authentic Arizona barbecue joint as they are Arizona natives and started this from ground up. We always order the country ribs meal (wife's favorite) and the the super sampler plate (my kind of thing). The smokiness of the meat is mild not to overwhelm your senses. Juicy, tender, and meaty...well worth getting your hands dirty. The Waldo's barbecue sauce is absolutely the best I've had...not some store bought stuff. They also have great sides to go along with the meal, fried corn (yum), Mac n cheese and such. Lastly make sure you ask for there jalapeños corn bread with butter, you'll not be disappointed. read more

Their baby back ribs are better than those served at the Rendezvous in Memphis, which is spodabe the best ribs in the USA. My brother and I have always liked the food and the atmosphere at Waldo's. But last night changed everything. The waiter made it clear that he didn't like that we sat in the only booth with a table that had not been cleared. As he was clearing the table (yes, the waiter was busing the tables, too!), he glared at us and shouted at us that it would have been easier to clean the table if we weren't sitting there. When I told him that we wouldn't be sitting there any longer and that we were leaving, he stood in the space between tables and took a combative position. Honestly, I thought he was going to hit me! Hole in a the wall place with charm. Food:Lean brisket is solid here and my #1 choice, followed closely with the pulled pork. We had the ribs one time and they are a strong pass. Love the skillet of bbq sauce and the sauce is really good. The sides are ok and some options are unlimited like the fries. The cornbread could be a A LOT better; it just crumbles in your hands and impossible to eat properly. Service: There is one guy that works here that is a speed demon, we try to sit in his section, but it seems to be changing all the time. Next time we will just have to ask for him, but ofter hard to do; as most times you seat yourself. If you get this guy, then service is 5 stars, if you get anyone else, it drops to a 1-2 stars. Good "hole in the wall" place for BBQ. This is a popular place in Mesa and we finally decided to check it out. They had $2 domestics on Monday. The decor is full of funny signs and suggestive humor. We ordered a Sampler Plus (or maybe it was called the Super Sampler). Regardless, it came with two sides. We ordered the horsey mashed potatoes and the spicy fries. The spicy fries were crunchy shoe string style fries with a bit of a kick. The mashed potatoes had a slight horseradish kick. It wasn't over powering if you're not a big horsey sauce fan. The meat portions were good. My husband loved the turkey whereas I am more of a brisket kinda gal. We split the Sampler and it was enough food for two adults. I came here a few years ago, loved it, meant to come back, never made it, left town, and every time I got back to town I would remember this place and how good it was but it never seemed to be the direction I was going or else I would be near it but have already eaten or be short on time. I always regretted not having gotten back. The other day my daughter and I had an activity not too far from here so I suggested we come here for dinner. We both loved it. The atmosphere was very family-friendly which we appreciated since we had a six year old with us. The service was mostly good with one small flaw. The food was absolutely delicious and the price was reasonable. Last time I had gotten some sort of a reasonably priced combination plate. I think it was about $8 then, and maybe $10 now. This time my daughter suggested something we have done before in restaurants, we got a big combination plate and split it. They didn't charge any extra for the splitting either which I liked. We got a kids meal hamburger for $4.99 for my grandson but they did charge a dollar extra to add American cheese. The combination we chose included four meats. We got the ribs, brisket, pulled pork, and pulled beef. The beef brisket wasn't the most tender I'd ever had although it wasn't unpleasant. Both pulled meats were wonderful, I just wish there had been a little more of them. But the winner on the plate, the best of them all, was definitely the ribs. They had to have been some of the best, most tender ribs I have ever had. I probably ate more than I normally do because the meat was so easy to chew and went down so easy. It also included two sides. I got sweet potato fries. Unfortunately I completely forgot to take a photo of the food, just one of the iced sweet tea which which was free with my Yelp check-in. This place has good BBQ. They have discounts on certain days for seniors (55) and military. The atmosphere is casual, exactly what you would expect in a BBQ place. We tried the fried pickles which were huge and in a good batter, they came with both ranch and bbq sauce. I would have given this restaurant a 3.5 if possible but rather round up than down. The restaurant is small but clean. The decor was fun. My cousin had the fried pickles which was fine. She had a breaded shrimp which she took the breading off of. We liked the warm bbq served to the table...that sauce is FIRE! IF we weren't traveling, I would keep this bbq in my house as the ONLY sauce. I got a sampler 3 meat plate consisting of pulled pork, juicy brisket and pulled beef. It was all very good, tender and a HUGE portion. For my sides I ordered the fried okra which was standard...nothing special and the potato wedges which were dry and pretty bad. It's like they have been sitting under a heat lamp for a couple of hours. Service was friendly and attentive. Would I go back again?
