Yikes. I got the Nixon salad since I was unable to bring lunch to work today. Nowhere in the description does it say anything about being smothered in sweet and sour sauce but it was dripping from my salad. The chicken is tasty and is supposed to be a 5-spice chicken. The actual salad dressing listed for the salad was on the side, which I appreciate but if I wasn't on break from work, I'd walk right back to return this mess of a soggy, disgusting salad! So gross. I requested that they kindly replace the wontons with cucumbers...and while they--thankfully--added cucumbers, wontons were still added. However, what's the point of trying to be healthy if your salad is soggy because it's drenched in sweet/sour sauce. After reading the reviews, I wonder why Wagshal's owners don't seem to care that the quality of their food and it seems their customer service is so poor. I stopped by today with a friend to grab a quick bite. Upon entering we were quickly seated and the waitress that took care of us did an excellent job as she was very attentive. I know what I like when it comes to sandwiches and went ahead with the Rueben. Verdict: the Rueben was solid and it really hit the spot. The one downside was that it was a bit soggy underneath, so the lower half of my Rueben was not toasted to perfection the way the upper half was. Needless to say, the flavor profile was definitely there and I would get it again. I think I'll come back again. read more

I come here fairly frequently and tend to diversify my order each time to try new things. Nothing I have tried has disappointed me and all and the staff are very friendly. One staff member in particular, Kai, always greets me with a smile and when I ask questions about certain foods at the deli she always has the answers. She also made a great Tilapia Bacon Lettuce Tomato sandwich that tastes like I just got off the beach on Cape Cod. read more

While visiting dc I stopped into wagshals each morning to grab coffee and a quick bite, today is my last day in dc and I stopped in to get coffee the guy who served me seemed to be very uninterested in his job, I placed my order and asked where the restrooms were when I came out of the bathroom I told him that there were no paper towels in the men's bathroom he didn't care one bit!!! It's this kind of attitude that will get you fired!! This was the first time I came to this location. The only two positives are the staff and the location. I ordered an egg and cheese on wheat toast for my mother and me, a coffee and black English breakfast tea. I was shocked to learn that one egg and cheese was over $6! The total with the beverages was more than $16! When we received the tea is was Earl Grey. When I asked for simple black tea, even a Lipton tea bag would have sufficed. But the only black tea they had was Earl Grey. There were several boxes of exotic teas of every kind but they were out of any simple black tea. When we received the egg and cheese, it was dry, tasteless and the egg was mostly egg white. It was not a scrambled egg like most egg and cheeses. It was poached and I could not locate the yolk! And the cheese was half a slice! They offered to redo them but I knew they would throw the ones we had in the trash so I declined. Needless to say, this place is grossly overpriced and needs to improve its products. I won't be returning again despite the fact it is in my neighborhood. But like I said, lovely staff and location. Wagshal's use to amazing!! Everything was fresh and delicious. Which then I'm completely ok with the pricy! But over the last few years they have gone downhill! Today the soup was cold, people in the back cursing and yelling, and it took 20 minutes to get a chicken Cesar sandwich.(ordering from a very angry man) Maybe if the owners took less time traveling the us doing all sorts of shows(that they boast about on social media accounts)and more attention to how they treat their customers, locations and I'm sure their employees it would benefit them. If it weren't for Pam the Butcher being the only one I trust with my meat I would have stopped coming years ago! I no longer recommend people to come to Wagshal's anymore, as it's more hassel and expense than it's worth. It's really rather sad to see a local place go from being one of the best to slowly bringing up the rear. read more

I've bought bread there several times - and 3 out of the last 4 times, the bread has been stale. This last visit, I specifically asked if the bread was fresh - I had already bought deli meats to make sandwiches. I was assured it was - but it wasn't . When I called later to complain, I got an apology, and a suggestion to try again. Not quite the help I was looking for. Too bad about your stale loaf and better luck next time. A pet peeve of mine are places that post that they are open until 9 p.m., but actually can't/wont prepare food after 8:30 p.m. I came in to buy a hot sandwich and there were no workers out front to help customers. After waiting for a few minutes, a guy walked in from outside and asked me if I wanted a sandwich. The grill/heater was turned off so I couldn't get a reuben. I just left. The whole wheat bread looked and tasted like decent grocery store wheat bread, but not house-made bread. The sandwiches were veritable salt-licks. I come to Wagshal's often, both for groceries and a quick bite to eat. I understand why some Yelpers have problems with the set up. It's quite complicated where you have to order at one booth and then pay at another. The prices for the prepared food really is not too bad. A nice panini is about $7.50 and it comes with a pickle but it does take them forever to grill it. I love their cold sandwiches because they are packed with veggies that are super fresh! As for groceries, the produce is always fresh and prices are good. The meat is expensive but you get what you pay for...quality is amazing. Their breads are nice but sometimes they can be super stale so I'm always asking them to give me a new loaf, etc. Some of their desserts are good (creme brule yum!) but some are not (chocolate cheesecake..bleh) and the price is decent but the portions are SMALL. Some of the people behind the counter can be a tad rude but then there are those who are super sweet and helpful. Wagshal's is convenient and therefore a bit expensive but give their hot foods a try! read more

A year later and another frustrating & time-consuming experience. They still don't know the prices - or different people quote different prices - and their customer service is terrible. The food is usually good and the people are friendly, so I wish I could give them even 2 stars. But who needs all that hassle when you're just trying to buy what they're selling? We ordered a bunch of pies for Thanksgiving. I called to ask if our order was ready for pickup and was told all orders were ready (they didn't check on mine specifically.) When I arrived, they had no record of it. Everything we'd ordered was available off the shelf but since yhey had emphasized that the order was final and could not be canceled, I was worried they might charge us twice and wanted to avoid that headache. Half an hour later I was able to get the invoice sent via email. Oh, they say, it's Spring Valley Catering, that's why we didn't find it. Seriously? Guys, we ordered from Wagshalls, were told to pick up at Wagshall's but somehow they fill the order with a sister company and can't figure that out? To add insult to injury, 45 minutes into my effort to pick up the order, the manager says, oh this is the wrong price for the dozen mini pies, they're $1.50 more each, I can show you. I just said, "it's a contract." Their contract. He honored the price. They wouldn't let me switch a pecan pie for a pumpkin pie, "because it's a catering order," even though they had a TON of each. Big confusion followed about how much the Thanksgiving cookies cost. The manager had a nice kid bring the pies to my car. I tipped him $5 since it was Thanksgiving eve - he was psyched. read more

Bought some steak and sausage at the Deli and a sandwich from the sandwich bar. This is the first time I have been to these location, I only know the one on Mass. Ave. It looks great from a distance but good lord, they really have to clean up the counters and deli food along with the Gelotti. The potato sald looked like it had been sitting there for a week, hard and crusty, as did the egg salad...yuck, there is no excuse for food looking like this on a deli counter. The Gelotti truly looked disgusting. Instead of the workers standing around chatting, I suggest they use the time to clean the containers and freshen up the Gelloti, wished I had taken a picture! Got a Veggie sandwich which was just OK. It said it had avocado, turned out to be a spread, sloppy and tasteless. Pam, the Butcher was great, very friendly and knows how to treat a customer. I will give it another chance as I like to support local businesses. PLEASE CLEAN! I used to live down the street, and I am legitimately bummed I didn't know of their GF HOMEMADE BREADS - YES PLURAL, BREADS!!! I am enjoying a Wagshal's #275 as I write this review. Yesterday I had it on gluten free white but today I switched it up and went sundried tomato (cheddar also available). This sandwich is perfection - turkey, russian and coleslaw. A classic. There are so many cold and hot sandwiches to choose from, but I am a #275 loyalist. If you have a hankering for kosher-style deli, this is the place. $7.99 for sandwich and pickle. In addition, this market has a butcher and fish counters on the premises. It's pricey but the quality of the meat is apparent and better than what you're getting a your local grocery store. They also have a nice bakery selection. Outdoor seating available. read more

I went here for a sandwich and, based on Yelp reviews, wasn't expecting much. The place LOOKS great. There's a lot of wide open space, the lines are quite organized, and the desserts look incredible. It's very bright and colorful. The sandwich line was empty, and no one was waiting for food, so I ordered a very simple, cold sandwich. Then I paid for my sandwich. Then I stood and waited for 15 minutes for my 5-ingredient sandwich. There were FOUR PEOPLE making sandwiches and only 3 people had ordered (including me, and the two folks after me). Fifteen minutes for a cold sandwich? Maybe the avocado was too difficult for them. While I was waiting, though, I decided some berries would be nice with my meal. So I wandered into the 'market' part of the store. After all, there's a huge sign that says ORGANIC outside, and it was prime berry season (early July). They had blueberries, raspberries, blackberries AND strawberries - and not one single berry was organic. I wonder what WAS organic, then? I didn't bother looking around. The sandwich wasn't bad, although certainly not good. It might be worth a stop for lunch if you are nearby - although if it takes four people 15 minutes to make a sandwich when no one's there, I can't imagine how long you might wait during the lunch rush. This place is amazing. Everything we've tried here from salads to soups to breakfast has been fantastic. We come here nearly every weekend for breakfast. The omelets are an amazing value and it's nice that you can order on your own, pay, then seat yourself and eat. They do offer full service options as well. If you're looking for a great deli in Washington DC, then look no further. I first heard about this deli on a top 10 sandwiches in DC and they were #1. Rightfully so. This is the newer location for Wagshals and while the food is the same at either spot, this one is where you should go for the better seating and more elbow room when ordering. I usually like to get the Turkey Stuffing Thing (yep actually called that) since it is basically Thanksgiving in a sandwich. Its warm and delicious and amazing. The cuban sandwich or the brisket or the #25 (roast beef with russian dressing and cole slaw mixed together) are all fabulous as well. The deli has has a huge selection of unique potato chips which is a nice compliment to the sandwich and a large selection of gourmet sodas. Only negative to this place is that you will probably spend around $13 for a sandwich, chips and soda. But you get what you pay for. You must go! read more

I was so excited to see a Wagshal's opening up near where I work and live. I have always enjoyed going to the Mass. Ave. location but when I tried the New Mexico location, I experienced poor management, rude employees, spoiled food, and a terrible layout. The way that the store is organized is extremely inconvenient and confusing. The prices seem to be hidden on items, probably because they are marked up to prices double of what they should be. The check out line is very odd and the cash registers are located on top of a bakery. This leads to accidental line skipping and frustration from customers. Although the employees are very rude and the layout is odd, the real problem of this location lies in the quality of food. Wagshal's was based on the premises that the food should be very fresh and well made. I have had several experiences that prove otherwise. 1. Moldy cheese in the cases labeled "freshly sliced cheddar cheese" 2. Multiple bones in the chicken salad 3. Molded "fresh fruit cup" 4. Multiple chicken bones in a quesadilla 5. Watermelon that was yellow when cut open 6. Cold soup 7. I have had several sandwiches that have none of the ingredients I asked for on them or they have forgotten ingredients. I honestly have never had a sandwich that was my correct order. 8. It SMELLS. The ventilation system is awful. Every time I go here, I have to run in and out as quickly as possible but I still have to get my clothing dry cleaned and I have to take a shower to wash my hair. You may wonder why I still go back to this terrible institution. My only reason is that it is convenient and I am hoping that it will eventually get better but after multiple (30+) trips to this Wagshal's I can honestly say that it is HORRIBLE. I got a pastrami reuben with mustard. Ok, but I've definitely experienced better. The pastrami was smoked and overpowered the sandwich. Definitely not worth the wait. Other than ensuring even wear on the floor, the traffic flow makes no sense. You get into the sandwich line in front of the gelato and slide left. After ordering, you slide left into a U turn around a pickle bar (that gets weighed), a skimpy hot food bar (also weighed), and loads of drink options. Then you get into another line near the gelato and slide right to pay. To get your sandwich, you slide right (until you're blocking the entrance) and wait. And wait. The staff was nice. The space is brand new and clean. There are a lot of treats in the cases at the check out -- very tempting. read more

I used to frequent their location on mass Ave (and I still do), but if you want a bit more of a streamlined and less chaotic experience, try the foxhall location. It doesn't have the variety that the mass Ave location has in terms of butcher and grocery items, but it still has all of the solid sandwich options. I enjoy their ham and cheese sandwich that has coleslaw on it. I used to love their tuna when I was younger but I haven't had it in a while. I would wager that it is still great. My dad also buys tenderloins and other beautiful cuts of meet from there on special occasions. It's definitely a more expensive option but we are never disappointed. read more
