We went there an hour beforw closing it was brutal weather and there was not many patrons. The only hot food was the bbq joint but the beef rib was already sold out. We went with the platter three meat we had double briskets and broaster drum sticks. I also tried the carnitas tacos. I tried the mint chocolate and it didnt taste too much of mint but more chocolate and a bit on the sweet side. The glass chardonnay was decent and enjoyable. The briskets were great but the wings with the seasoning were really good. So much so we ordered more to go. The tacos were also good lots of meat i was full after 1.5. They gave us a variety of sauces to go with the food. read more

Wagshal's is refreshingly different and not too expensive. The BBQ is very tasty and the pastries never miss.

When I worked at AU, going to Wagshal's was always a nice treat so when I was in the area on a weekday afternoon I decided to make a pitstop. I order the bbq sandwich online and picked up a black and white cookie when I went to grab the order. I always loved the baked goods and the black and white cookie didn't disappoint. My bbq sandwich was also tasty. I was surprisingly large and came with a side of house wedges and a salad. Unfortunately, mine didn't come with the salad I selected. The potatoes were well seasons and the bbq was both smoky and tangy. Ordering and pickup were easy so I'll definitely be back if I'm in the area and able to find parking in the neighborhood. read more

Ordered thanksgiving meal including Turkey about a month ago. Was told it was ready for pick up last night only to get there and after standing in a long line to be told that someone "stole" our Turkey to give to another customer. Also they didn't have our Turkey gravy that we ordered either. Absolutely outrageous service. So so disappointing. A disaster. I stopped in for an early lunch at about 11:20 a.m. I was going to venture a simple ham and Swiss sandwich and chips, but there were no plain, non-strange flavored chips available. Most of the selection being large bags of chips completely unsuitable for a single diner. I opted instead for what turned out to be the worst beef empanada I have ever had. Despite plenty of unusual ingredient (what that HAM?), it was virtually flavorless. I also wanted a Diet Coke, but the drinks refrigerator was warm. Not the drinks, the entire interior of the fridge. The cook directed me to a smaller fridge where I at least found a Coke (no Diet available). This seems all the more strange to me, because the store is located in one of the wealthiest areas of the city. I don't get it. I won't go back. read more

So very overpriced. I get it is Spring Valley but when you a pay a premium, you expect a premium meal and service. Wagshals instead serves slop at insane prices with just ok service. The Italian sub - what was a favorite of mine and used to be around $10 - is now $15.95 - yes, nearly $16 for a small sub. It didn't have that much meat, the meat wasn't high quality and the sandwich was dry as there were barely any sweet peppers or oil/vinegar on it. The staff weren't particularly friendly, either. There are so many better options nearby and I'll be going elsewhere next. read more

Delish!!! My husband and I stopped here today for the first time since we were in the neighborhood. We love a good Reuben so I was really excited and to be honest it did not disappoint! We both had a smoked Reuben with extra dressing (don't judge but I love a saucy sandwich)! The corned beef was so tender and flavorful! The coleslaw had just the right balance of sweet and vinegar flavor to it and was also creamy! It was one of the best Reuben I have had! I totally meant to take a photo but we were so hungry and chowed down before I realize I didn't get a good picture. There's always next time --- and trust me there will be a next time! Gourmet deli and market with a nice seated area for eating in. I was surprised that the tables are full service; we were seated by a hostess and our server was very attentive. The menu is mostly sandwiches, burgers, and salads, but also has a variety of entrees. Our choices - shrimp & crab casserole and vegan ramen - were decent but not memorable. However, my husband pointed out that our selections probably weren't the house specialities. My friend was pretty happy with his choice of the Impossible Burger. We all enjoyed the deli bakery cookies we bought for dessert, too. Overall, I would rate our dining experience 3.5 stars, but given the convenient seating area and good service I would visit again, especially to try the brunch and lunch menus. read more

I stopped here with a friend to purchase some produce, and everything seem to be arranged neatly and all organized. I found the tray of the local brown eggs to be super cute, and the selection of the meats impressive. The staff here are friendly and helpful, and you pay your items up at the cashier. Asked about BBQ and was told it was pulled and hickory smoked. It was neiither--chopped (large pieces, not done in BBQ land) and just a cooked pork shoulder, smothered in BBQ sauce. This was the WORST BBQ sandwich I have had in DC. This is an important feedback comment because Wagshal's has a rather large BBQ menu. I have loved the corn beef special for years-- 15 or so. Just got one today with very little corn beef and tons of kraut. Like eating a puff kraut pastry. And it was cut length wise and the staff offered me ketchup to go? I don't expect Carnegie Delly quality in DC, but this is not a sandwich I return for. Please instruct your new staff. Great sandwiches at these prices need balance of kraut and meat. It's a bit of a labor of love. Don't skimp on meat of course, if anything buck it up a bit-- you get repeat biz that way. This review is specifically about the restaurant. We live within a 5 minute walk from here, and while it is super convenient and has good food, we rarely go there to eat. The service is always super slow and the outside dining space is very underwhelming, especially for this neighborhood. The staff is very friendly and accommodating, which is why it is such a shame that they don't take more care and pride in their restaurant. We went there for breakfast this morning with the intention of eating outside because we had our dog with us, but the tables were all scattered and there was trash everywhere. It reminded me of a high school cafeteria, after the lunch rush. We ended up leaving and going to Starbucks. Too bad, because their French toast is one of the best I've ever had. Update: Wish I could give a positive update but they have gone even further down hill. With service to their restaurant being closed, I went in to get 2 bagels, a side of cream cheese, and a side of lox. I ended up giving up and walking out. Came here to grab some gelato for 2 staff members and myself and as soon as the "manager" came over he looks at the server and lightly whispers to the server who was scooping out the gelato and said "it's only 2 scoops for a small". Ok.... So here the guy who was scooping the gelato has ALWAYS been on top of his customer service whenever I go and order food from wagshals. I love all the other staff too super super awesome people but not the manager with the long hair and mustache ( didn't catch his name ). 1. The gelato wasn't even set it was super watery and I asked for the gelato to be put in a cup and a cone on top. We go up to pay.. the manager who whispers in the servers ears checks us out. He says $7.50.. I said for a small? He goes for a small plus the cone. Mind you a small gelato is $4.00.. so you're telling me your charging me $3.50 for a cone??? The manager goes "well didn't Julio tell you it was extra.. I heard him tell you that" ( with an attitude ).. I responded "uhmmm actually no he did not sir but charge me anyways for it" I wasn't going to argue with someone like him. Anyways, long story short the manager says we'll if that's not what he said then it's $17 for all 3 .. they were small watery gelatos.. lastly he was rude AF! Don't get go here and get gelato. I won't be going back there on lunch break anymore.. I'll take my money elsewhere. I'll be posting on our lunch room for my employees to dodge wagshals for lunch too. Wagshal's- both on New Mexico and Massachusetts is very conveniently located to my place, so I've had frequent experiences at both locations. I have been very pleased with both the butcher and full service restaurant at the Massachusetts location. However, I have noticed a steady decline across the board (prepared foods, deli, and grocery) at the New Mexico location and this is what this review reflects. In a pinch earlier this week, I decided to get dinner for myself and my husband. I got some prepared fish and 2 ready-made caesar salads from the refrigerator. Wagshal's isn't known for their reasonable prices, but I can respect high prices for quality food- which is what I expect from this place. Simply saying- it was not a cheap dinner and I never spend just a little at Wagshal's. I got home and my husband took his salad, put it in a bowl and started eating. I opened my salad and did they same and then noticed on my fork a pea-sized glob of something dark brown. Luckily I was paying attention and didn't eat it. It appeared to be a glob of wet dirt (I can only hope it was dirt and not feces). I stirred the salad around a little and saw more dark brown globs. Totally grossed out, I put the salad away, and worried all night that I or my husband had accidentally ingested some of whatever this brown substance was before noticing it. I saved the salad so I could take back to Wagshal's the next day, surely they would be as concerned as I was that this was found in 1 of their ready to eat products. I was wrong. I politely went into the store the next day with the salad and asked to speak to a manager. I explained what happened and her reaction was unbelievable. She didn't seem to think it was a big deal and explained to me how they do wash it...sometimes 2 or 3 times, but since everything comes from local farms, sometimes they miss a little dirt. She assured me it was dirt, and actually went on to say that you can't get food poisoning from dirt. That is absolutely inaccurate and dangerous if they truly believe that. The manager offered to buy my lunch (no thank you) or give me credit the next time I came in- but didn't even get my name so that offer didn't really seem serious. I've come to the conclusion the quality standards at this location have gone downhill because of things like this- I don't think they're clean. And obviously they don't really care. Luckily I did not get food poisoning, but I will not be taking a chance here again. I'm still grossed out by the whole experience, and still trying to convince myself it was just dirt and not something even worse. read more

Brunch at Wagshal's on New Mexico today was an awful indescribably Bad Experience! I was meeting a friend so I arrived 10 minutes early. I waited to be seated in the reserved for full service only area, waited and waited. Workers passed me carefully avoiding eye contact. I should have gotten a clue and went next door but I was craving a deli bagel. Finally I asked someone and was told to go ahead and sit down anywhere I wanted. I picked a table and sat waiting for the server to acknowledge my existence. In all fairness, initially it appeared she was by herself, they were busy, but not crazy busy! What follows made no sense to me but hey I was already there and my friend was on the way. The server never acknowledged me, I had to get her attention to which she replied I didn't even know you were here! Really, I AM! My friend arrives and we order club soda, after waiting another 10 minutes we get rancid nasty Sprite or some bubbly sugary thing. I finally get her attention again and tell her, another 5 minutes pass and she returns with a bottle of Perrier, I say ok two of those, ice and lime, can we place our order? She says she will be back. Few more minutes pass and we get the Perrier no ice, lime on the side we finally order. Waiting waiting waiting. She comes back not sure what we ordered. Starts going through her tickets, did you order ???? No, we share what we ordered again. Unbelievable!!! It is now more than an hour since I got there and I am seething. More time passes and finally the food arrives, mine looks sloppy, the garnish cucumbers are rancid, the sesame bagel looks whiter than wonder bread, clearly not toasted and food is just sloppily placed on the plate. My friend's quiche thing is looking sadder than anything I have ever seen. For this we were charged $32.00. Bad service, terrible presentation and just an overall bad experience. I am disappointed because this used to be a good place in my neighborhood where I enjoyed to get a meal. Now I will take my business else where. On a Sunday when you want brunch you don't want a side of drama and incompetence with it for which you are charged. read more

Otherwise great, I have lived in the neighborhood for years and often stop in lunch, prepared foods, the Dijon Chicken which is excellent, or a bottle of wine. I do love a roast chicken, but typically pick them up at Whole Foods or make them myself. Picked one up at Wagshal's this evening and it is a sad bird - i was disappointed- I couldn't even eat it. Generally a great place - I would not recommend the prepared roast chicken - maybe I am strange or very particular about my roast chickens but this was just gross. We had Sunday brunch here-- chicken salad plate, corn beef hash with eggs, eggs benedict, coffee, chocolate cake and creme brulee--all of which was good quality food and served by pleasant young men. But some mess up so we sat for over 25 minutes before our food came. Hoping this was anomalous as wed lime to come here again. This place reminds me of small speciality markets in Montreal. I by and far prefer this small, electric style of market with high end products that isn't exactly the same as what you can grab off the shelves of a Whole Foods. They have whole racks of dry aged prime rib and a wide selection of prepared foods. Especially since I went in December there's this wonderful cozy air about the place and I'm not even an Xmas fan. if I were to critique them, it's that they can afford to be fancier and more creative with their prepared food offerings giving their price point. Ie: you don't need chili and beefaroni on a hot bar when you sell dry aged beef and sparkling wine. Also the cheese selection was a bit sparse given the context - it was mostly mild commercial cheeses like smoked cheddars and port salut that have been shrink wrapped. You can get port salut and every other TJ and WF, they should honestly try to get the special stuff like mont d'or or tomme de savoie. The biggest flaw was a sandwich I ordered. I ordered the pastrami special was not special at all because the pastrami was in thick chewy slices akin to ham, not tender, thin, and melt in your mouth so the cheese didn't integrate itself into the tender pastrami and kraut like a wonderful chorus of contrasting flavors (just go to parkway deli and you'll know what I mean.) also, the sandwich ended up being more expensive than what was marked in the menu (the menu being copier paper = quick fix.) it wasn't worth 11 dollars needless to say. Regardless, I enjoyed the opportunity to try different dolci gelatos and getting a hand scooped pint. I also really enjoyed the pear and almond paste tart. Only 1.99/slice which is a steal. Great addition to the neighborhood and obviously very popular among families, yuppies, and college students alike. Nonetheless, the flow of purchasing food/drink and paying is very messed up. People keep running into each other because the directions for where to go are nonexistent and because the space is pretty narrow. Love the sandwich options, and the bakery is probably its best feature. I'd say watch people get food - and stumble - before getting into line yourself. 3.5 stars. So this is a weird, medium overpriced place. It sells way too many things to do them all well. That said, I really really liked their Reuben sandwich. The beef was really flavorful, the bread was griddled and crunchy, the cheese was melty.... it was just a really great sandwich. Is it absurd that a sandwich with no fries or chips costs more than $10? Yeah, definitely. But it's also a pretty good sandwich in an area that doesn't have a ton of options. I got a small slice of chocolate cake from the bakery and found the cake horribly dry. Apparently the mini key lime pie was better, but I'd probably try not to get distracted by the desserts again. Overall, not a bad lunch option if you're nearby, but I wouldn't make a special trip. read more
