I did Uber Eats for this order, so I can't comment much on the customer service or atmosphere, but A LOT of the kataifi (the crunchy strings) were burnt, which made it unpleasant to eat. I also am not sure if it was supposed to include pieces of real pistachio, but I couldn't get much flavor from the pistachio sauce. I also feel they could've been more generous with the pistachio sauce. Some of the strawberries tasted sour while others taste over ripe. Waffles & Cream represents a renaissance of sorts for this area as both of their neighbors, one being a taqueria the other being a trendy cocktail bar are too relatively new to the neighborhood, as all three businesses took over from businesses that have been closed for years and whose new homes needed a full remodel. Thankfully Waffles & Cream is one of those new businesses making this area of Richmond a must visit, and who knew that would be said in recent years. Places like Richmond need places like Waffles & Cream as a gathering place because a) who doesn't like ice cream and b) families need a place where they could enjoy and walk to from their homes and Waffles & Cream serves both purposes. When I saw the "coming soon" sign up as they were remodeling the place, I knew I had to make this a destination on a warm day, and that day finally arrived for me one recent weekday that was unseasonably warm. Finding parking along Clinton Avenue was an easy task since it was in the afternoon on a weekday and thankfully when I entered they weren't that busy. I love their interior as its simple and a picture taking lover's paradise as there is a huge neon sign that says "Count the Blessings Not the Calories." Truer words have never been spoken. Of course many people come for scoops and cones of ice cream, but at Waffles & Cones, there is so much more. Start with their name, it's not just waffle cones they sell, it's actually waffles, freshly made with a homemade batter and in two styles: a bubble waffle traditionally seen in Asia, and a liege waffle traditionally seen in the U.S. and Europe. In addition to ice cream by the scoop served in a cone or cup, their menu also has their Signature Bubble Waffles which are waffles wrapped as a cone with a scoop of ice cream in the middle, the menu at Waffles & Cream also has Specialty Liege Waffles in which the ice cream is scooped on top, they also have Express Liege Waffles which have no ice cream, and Shakes, which was my primary desire upon this first visit. Although many of their Shakes sounded delicious there was something about their Salted Caramel Shake, which was made with vanilla ice cream, crushed pretzels, whole milk and topped with caramel sauce house whipped cream that was calling my name so I ordered that Shake. And since I saw their customer service representative Emely dutifully making a waffle and having that smell waft throughout the entire restaurant, I asked her which of the waffles were popular and one of her suggestions was their Banana Caramel Express Liege Waffle which was a freshly made Belgian Waffle topped with fresh bananas, caramel sauce, chocolate sprinkles, and house made whipped cream. It would take a short time for Emely to put in my order and handcraft both my Shake and Waffle, but the wait was well worth it. Everything, from the waffle being warm and extra fruity thanks to the freshness of all of the elements to the shake rich with creamy flavor thanks to the extra bits of pretzels and generous amounts of caramel were delicious upon first taste. Was it decadent? It sure was and I wouldn't have it any other way despite the weather being so warm outside and feasting on a warm fresh waffle was not on my priority list. My total bill for this visit was $17.68, which for meals in this neighborhood is on the pricier side. But with all of the fresh ingredients that they use, this is now the new normal and to be expected. For the city of Richmond to continue to have places like Waffles & Cream, I for one am so thankful they are here feeding the community and beyond with their sweet treats. I can't wait to come back and enjoy another delectably created delight, perhaps their signature Specialty Bubble Waffle with a scoop of ice cream for myself and a friend to enjoy. But who are we kidding?
