20% fee added to To Go orders

First of all, let me preface this by saying we drove over 70 miles to come to a Waffle House, on our way back home from vacation. We hadn't eaten since the night before and it was already 11:00 am. I was getting hangry. So, we come in and are somewhat relieved that there are only 2 people waiting ahead of us. We look around and there are 4 tables and several stools that are still dirty with dishes. We waited probably 15 minutes while one gal stood around and looked around. I think she was waiting on a to go order, but was doing nothing while waiting. Others were cooking, washing dishes and waiting on other customers. I was very close to hopping up and asking if I could clean off some tables! The other waitresses were not speedy, but at least they were doing something. I think my face showed how shocked I was to see her constantly doing nothing while tables needed cleared off and then we see her facing the counter shoving stuff in her mouth eating. My husband said even though he didn't own the place, he wanted to fire the girl. We were each asked if we wanted a drink refill once. We did not get any knife. We just used a fork to spread our jelly and cut our waffle. We had to ask for syrup. The food would have tasted great if it had been hot and my waffle wasn't overdone. My husband got an incomplete waffle, because they didn't make sure there was enough batter. I am a very good tipper - usually at least 20%, but I was struggling to give 15% here. I think the owner and/or manager need to step it up. Also, is it normal to charge a 20% fee for to go orders?? I was shocked when I saw the sign at the cash register.

An old piece of bacon on the window sill, hundreds of flies on the outside. Yuck.

Trust me, I'm not dissing on the Waffle House concept. I have been to a dozen of these and I get it. Greasy comfort food available at any time of day. There is a need for that and Waffle House has the market cornered. What I'm talking about is the struggle that I just had at this Waffle House in particular. I came in on a Saturday morning, the place was about half full. Everything took a while for us. We didn't get menus when our server came the first time. "Do you need creamer with your coffee?" "Yes, please." 2 minutes later, coffee shows up...without creamer. My daughter's waffle came out 5 minutes before anything else. Service was rough, partly the server, partly the cook. The place was also fairly dirty. Take a look at my picture of bacon sitting on the window sill right next to us! The outside of the store also hadn't gotten attention in a while. If you really crave a Waffle House, go the one on the Southside of Paducah. If you have to stick to the interstate, try the off-brand Waffle Hut at exit 3. Sorry, folks.

I enjoyed my friendly service, very attentive waitress and very engaging cook ( he asked about the taste and the flavor of the food and based on conversation took pride in his work ). I was very surprised when I received my omelette that it looked like if I had made it myself. They was not skimpy on the ingredients and my waitress kept my unsweet tea filled to the rim every time she saw you go low (Half full). Casual but meaningful conversation was an added plus. I will be in the area for a few more weeks and I do plan on returning here :)

But my husband went with the Three Little Piggies (bacon, ham and sausage gravy in an omelet) with a side of bread pudding mini waffles (these were AMAZING, especially with the cinnamon butter), and I ordered a couple of sides (bacon, hash browns and corn nuggets) which were all tasty and not overly filling. Be mindful if sitting in the back room because the floor has some unusual slopes and cuts, so if you're sitting in a booth watch out when you step down. Would come here again for breakfast in Paducah!

There's nothing warm and cozy about the room-- just signs with smarmy platitudes like "if you don't like my cooking, lower your standards." Har har har. I was in for breakfast and chose a meat/eggs/side combo. The side choices are four different kinds of potatoes. I chose hash brown casserole because the other three items were fried, but what I got seemed a lot like fried hashbrowns with cheese stirred in. The eggs and ham on my plate were coated in what seemed like fake yellow butter substitute. Eggs were not fully cooked; the whites were runny. in all, not a great experience.

I ordered the Chicken Parmesan sandwich with fries same hubby ordered fish and chips. The waitress brought out a basket of rolls with whipped butter. Those were excellent rolls. Yeasty and soft. The butter was perfect too. Loved the rolls. Our meal came and immediately I was impressed with their fish and chips. The menu says hand breaded. The fish looked amazing. Hubby said it very good, great breading, nice and crispy. Great tartar sauce too. I wish I had tried it. My fries were not crispy (no double fry) not crispy at all. They were hot and cooked though. My sandwich was pretty good, not excellent. It had a bit too much sauce in it for me. It had a good flavor and the toasted garlic roll was good. I will be back, but I think I will try something else next time.

To be fair, the servers were very kind and doing their absolute best, but the restaurant was clearly understaffed. Everyone looked frantic, which set the tone right away. The dining room was also freezing, with cold air constantly sweeping in from outside -- not exactly the cozy lunch my mom and I were hoping for. My mom ordered her favorite, the shrimp and grits, and she loved it. Clean plate, no complaints from her. I wish I could say the same for my meal. I ordered the prime rib after asking the server about it. She assured me it was juicy and looked great today. I asked for medium rare. What arrived was a dry, gray slab of meat that was nowhere near medium rare. I cut into it to show her how overdone and dry it was, and she took it back. Eight minutes later, a second prime rib arrived. This one had a tiny bit of pink, but still mostly gray, still dry, and still absolutely not fresh. It tasted like leftover prime rib from the day before that had been microwaved -- that unmistakable reheated texture and flavor. It was honestly disgusting. I choked down less than half before giving up. The baked potato was the only thing I could actually enjoy. The broccoli had a strange, unpleasant taste and went untouched. My mom would genuinely recommend O'Charley's for the shrimp and grits. But for anything else -- especially the prime rib -- I'd suggest steering clear. Or if you do go, just play it safe and get a baked potato. Very disappointing experience, especially for a $32 prime rib in a small Kentucky town.

We both are fans of "Top Chef" and since her restaurant is within reasonable distance of home, we planned a trip around it. In fact, we made reservations for two nights in a row, to take in as much of the menu as possible! Between the two different days, we tried a number of appetizers, entrees and desserts. If I were to do this again the same way, I would do one day of apps and dessert and one day of entrees, just to spread things out a bit. What we ate: - Fall pickles: I enjoyed this, with the bit of chili heat, especially the cauliflower - Stuffed Mushrooms: I love mushrooms, and these blended creamy, sweet and hot with a filling of cream cheese, berry BBQ sauce and smoked jalapeno - Pistachio and herb chevre cheeseball: a fresh cheese enhanced by nutty and Herby notes - Smoked bologna: my husband's choice; very meaty and there was a lot of it - Spicy beer cheese spread: a very Midwestern feeling appetizer with tasty veggies and crackers Entrees: -Shrimp and grits: my choice: comforting southern food with lots of flavor - Duck fried rice: his choice: rich rice offset by more delicate vegetables - Sticky ribs: my choice: the pumpkin spice and coffee liqueur glaze worked well for a cozy, wintry meal - Braised pork shoulder: his choice; served with beans and cornbread, this was another hearty, comforting meal with a Southern twist. Desserts: - Winter creme brulee: this was my favorite, flavored with mulling spices, orange and pomegranate We also enjoyed a seasonal sorbet and the fall spice cake. We had the same server both nights, Elizabeth, who was good at making recommendations, and also staggering the small plates on our small table so we wouldn't be overloaded. Chef Sara was in house the second night, bringing dishes to tables. The setting is relaxed, not overly loud, with moody lighting. Overall, we would certainly return to Freight House!

And this menu is ENORMOUS Parker's is a very cool throwback to the car hops of the 50s and early 60s. You can order outside on the speaker or go inside for the full-on experience. The inside is decorated with movie and music memorabilia and neon. Lots of neon. If you're eating inside you order at the counter, they give you a number, and you find a seat. The menu is hand-held/bar food. Burgers, hotdogs, onion rings, and fries, and a variety of sandwiches and a HUGE selection of sides. My wife had a mushroom and swiss burger, I had your basic cheese burger. Our sides were onion rings and fries. Our food was delivered hot, fresh, and accurate within ten minutes. My wife's burger/onion rings came on a basket shaped like a guitar. #AWESOME!! The food was tasty and delicious. I asked for tomato on my cheeseburger and they were able to add it, but was sliced probably 3/4 of an inch thick! It made the burger look a little lopsided, but it was still good. The staff was friendly and didn't look at me funny when I asked for a side of mayonnaise for my fries (yea I'm that guy). The dining room was authentically decorated, like I said, with vintage movie and music stuff down to the chrome chairs and the soda fountain seat with silver, twirly seats...even the floor tiles were like something you'd see in a movie from the 50s. Our first visit was a great experience and we had a lot of fun despite unrelenting rain. If we get to Paducah again, Parker's Drive In is definitely our lunch destination.
