    cakes are a little heavy
    Daniel P.

after a poor night's rest I figured I'd get some victuals to match. stumbled across this place looking for another, lot was two-deep in local vehicles end to end so why not... besides, it seems to be the only game in town outside of the casino ;-\ like many small town diners this is a great place if you're from here, otherwise it can be hit or miss; lone waitress tending a fifteen or so tables is as busy making small talk as feeding the masses. found a seat, got a menu and coffee and asked for cakes and eggs plus gravy biscuits in lieu of toast. getting tired of not-quite-set whites on eggs up, this might be popular with the younger crowd but I am not a fan. similarly, the gravy was thicker and darker than is my wont and the pancakes heavy and dull. I prefer my cakes and gravies lighter and brighter but it may be regional differences or possibly the flour went off... seemed to do alright with the biscuity bit though :-)

The pretzel as an appetizer is very good. I like the shrimp and Cindy usually gets the small steak. They have specials that you need to ask about. Sometimes the specials sell out before we get there. We like to eat after the rush hours. The tables are comfortable. They are not crammed in there like some places. We are not alcohol drinkers, but they have a full bar with 2 TV's. We sat at the bar and watched the Suoer Bowl in 2026. We had a blast with other guests, especially a widowed little lady who said she could have 2 beers and had 6. She was a funny drinker. The entire crew has always been great to us. Did I mention to ask for Tara to be your server? Bridges' folks are the reason we go to Metropolis. There are plenty of casinos almost everywhere now. We have only found one Bridges. Make a reservation on open table if you want to and enjoy a nice supper.

We're tried a bunch and Mrs. K. consistently rates the custard from Freddy's as one of the very better chains. So we popped in here as we're passing through the Mississippi/Ohio convergence and got a chocolate custard to go. The location is tidy with no litter in the parking lot. Inside, the dining room was quiet and empty which seemed odd considering it was 5pm on a Friday. I placed my order and had a look around - tables and floors were clean. A minute or three later, frozen custard handed over and I was back on the way east. The custard was delicious and creamy. A good one. Freddy's remains a solid choice for frozen custard. I ordered the Chicken Parmesan sandwich with fries same hubby ordered fish and chips. The waitress brought out a basket of rolls with whipped butter. Those were excellent rolls. Yeasty and soft. The butter was perfect too. Loved the rolls. Our meal came and immediately I was impressed with their fish and chips. The menu says hand breaded. The fish looked amazing. Hubby said it very good, great breading, nice and crispy. Great tartar sauce too. I wish I had tried it. My fries were not crispy (no double fry) not crispy at all. They were hot and cooked though. My sandwich was pretty good, not excellent. It had a bit too much sauce in it for me. It had a good flavor and the toasted garlic roll was good. I will be back, but I think I will try something else next time.

To be fair, the servers were very kind and doing their absolute best, but the restaurant was clearly understaffed. Everyone looked frantic, which set the tone right away. The dining room was also freezing, with cold air constantly sweeping in from outside -- not exactly the cozy lunch my mom and I were hoping for. My mom ordered her favorite, the shrimp and grits, and she loved it. Clean plate, no complaints from her. I wish I could say the same for my meal. I ordered the prime rib after asking the server about it. She assured me it was juicy and looked great today. I asked for medium rare. What arrived was a dry, gray slab of meat that was nowhere near medium rare. I cut into it to show her how overdone and dry it was, and she took it back. Eight minutes later, a second prime rib arrived. This one had a tiny bit of pink, but still mostly gray, still dry, and still absolutely not fresh. It tasted like leftover prime rib from the day before that had been microwaved -- that unmistakable reheated texture and flavor. It was honestly disgusting. I choked down less than half before giving up. The baked potato was the only thing I could actually enjoy. The broccoli had a strange, unpleasant taste and went untouched. My mom would genuinely recommend O'Charley's for the shrimp and grits. But for anything else -- especially the prime rib -- I'd suggest steering clear. Or if you do go, just play it safe and get a baked potato. Very disappointing experience, especially for a $32 prime rib in a small Kentucky town.
