The Shrimp Kabobs are two long skewers of Gulf Coast shrimp with a seasoned grill taste. On other occasions, we tried and recommend the Chicken Francese, a large chicken breast cooked to perfection in a lightly cream sauce on a bed of angel hair pasta and fresh vegetables; or the Skirt Steak with Chimichurri gently dusted across the top; or a lunch time Burger with Fries. Hard to imagine going to a golf course to eat, but at Tartan Pines it does have a two-in-one setting. The Pro Shop and golf on one side; and the restaurant / bar on the other side. Membership not required for either and open to the public. Pay them a visit and sit back and enjoy the view, sip a Classic Old Fashion, a glass of wine or refreshing Mixed Cocktail - even a cold draft beer while you wait for your food. My two friends and I were often stopping into Waffle House after league play. Everytime the tall African-American cook was cooking our food was either cold raw or burned. We stopped going into WH after too many nights like that, and began eating before league play. We have not been in for quite awhile, in hopes the bad cook was gone, then tonight we went to WH to eat again. Tonight, my waffle was burned, but I ate the lighter less cooked spots anyway. When my plate arrived, my bacon was burned and my scrambled eggs were scorched. When the kind waitress offered to have my meal recooked, I told her that I did not want my meal recooked for I was afraid the cook would spit in my food for returning it. When she brought my bill, she stated she had removed my meal and apologized. I told her that it was not her fault that the cook could not cook scrambled eggs without scorching and burning them. I made comments at our table with my friends about how horrible the food was, and how poor the cook was at being a cook. I, also, spoke of my 12 year old niece being a better cook. Here is where things went really strange: Is it normal to complain about the burning of one's food, then when you exit the building the police arrive to tell you that you are banned? For real! Officer Walters asked for my ID and the IDs of my friends. I told him that my friends had not said a word about the food or anything. We told him to ask the girl inside if we were any trouble. He still needed all three IDs. I handed him mine as my friends exited my vehicle to get their's from their vehicle. I should inform you now that after we eat, we always sit in the parking lot for 30-45 smoking and talking before they depart out of town, and I depart for my home in town, but it is cold now, and we were sitting in my warmed truck. The second officer arrives and enters the building. The cook is standing outside mouthing at me about I was banned and could not come back to WH. When the second officer exited the building, our IDs were returned and we were told that we were not banned, but had to leave for the night. I asked if we could finish our cigarettes, but was told that the manager (cook) wanted us off the property. We left the property, and moved both vehicles further into the Westgate Mall parking lot to talk and finish our cigarettes. Then we departed. This was all like the twilight zone. If a cook does not want a customer to say anything about their horrible cooking, they need to learn to cook. read more

Things have started feeling different--the atmosphere is less welcoming than it used to be. On a recent visit, there was some confusion regarding the corned beef hash. I was previously told they were out of corned beef (which implied it was homemade), only to find it was canned on a subsequent visit. When I politely asked about this, and about why the dish was served with an additional side of hash browns--which contained onions and peppers that I am allergic to--the interaction became uncomfortable. The conversation with our waiter took an unexpected turn when he asked if we were "Yankees." When I confirmed we were from the North, he remarked, "It figures," and accused me of having an "attitude" when I merely questioned the menu composition. The experience concluded at the register. When we were charged 79 cents for extra salsa instead of the 50 cents we were quoted, an older woman stepped in. When I politely pointed out the price discrepancy, she was dismissive and snotty, turning her back on us while we were still speaking. When I asked about "the customer is always right," it was clear service--and kindness--no longer seemed to be a priority. It is disheartening because the food has historically been consistent, and we truly miss the days when staff like Ami made us feel welcome. I am not writing this for a refund or a correction; I simply wanted to share my perspective. Everyone has a bad day, but to lose a long-time customer over such a minor interaction is a shame. While I personally won't be returning after being treated that way, I still hope those who enjoy the food continue to support the business. I just hope that, moving forward, the team remembers that kindness matters as much as the meal itself.
