Hi, my name is Chris and I have been to Waffle House after 2 AM. At some point earlier in the evening, my well intentioned night of bar hopping devolved into a somewhat pleasant carousel ride of sorts, complete with blurred lights, strange music, and swirling background noises. This comforting ride somehow morphed into a raging, tilt-a-whirl... which then became a carnival funhouse... a dizzying maze that ended in a tunnel... a tunnel that spun and spun and spun until everything faded to black. When the lights came back on, I found myself sitting in a Formica both, beneath the crackle of a flickering florescent lie detector. For some reason, I was fumbling around, trying to retrieve a single paper napkin from a spring-loaded chrome dispenser- without inadvertently removing the entire stack. In front of me sat a thick, perhaps unbreakable, ceramic plate of egg scrambles, a rack of greasy bacon, a slice of dry white toast, and hash browns- diced, smothered, covered, and scattered. There were also two small plastic packets of sealed jellies- apple and grape. I'm not sure why I mention this. Anyway, I had apparently already completely drenched my serving of fried potatoes in ketchup and hot sauce. Across the both from me sat a woman- a woman I did not know. Strange business was afoot. Fortunately, she was too fixated on scarfing down an oversized patty melt before the burger freed itself from its toasted cuffs to be concerned with me. And speaking of me... my senses were too blunted to be overly concerned as to how I came to be cast in this odd new role. Nevertheless, something In the back of my head understood that I was not simply at a diner- rather, I was in a psychic fueling depot- one of those places that only reveals itself to those in a state of semi-consciousness and only if they find themselves in the right location, precisely between the dawn and the dark of night- or, well, to those who eat a bunch of mushrooms before watching a Wes Anderson film. This way station diner- this glorious Waffle House- was a place out of time, or least it was out of sync with time. Smoking wasn't permitted- it probably hadn't been allowed for at least a decade- and, yet, somehow this strange place held onto to the essence of that memory like a misspelled and poorly applied tattoo. In fact, if I made the point of not looking, green glass ashtrays would appear in my peripheral vision, only to disappear when I turned my head for a real peek. In all fairness, I don't really remember eating. I don't recall paying. I don't even remember leaving. But I do remember Beatrice. One couldn't fairly call Beatrice's smile toothy- but it was oddly comforting- especially when she called me "honey," as she refilled my half empty coffee mug- twice- perhaps three times. So, since I am not entirely sure how I got there, nor do I recall everything I did while I was there, I can't honestly say that I recommend it. However, if you find yourself at this particular Waffle House after 2AM, just try and relax and go with the flow. The Universe has likely brought you to this place for a reason. While I am not what most would call a spiritual person, I can say with all confidence that you should eat your eggs and know this: Beatrice is always watching over you. read more

I will remember this moment for the rest of my life. 5/5 stars UPDATE: The water was life changing. It was perfectly chilled and iced. I drank a whole glass. The butter was very nice, it was melty and delicious. The waffle had waffle house on it which just added to the experience. I am planning on getting a waffle house tattoo after this experience. The pecan waffles have altered my life and raised the bar for all waffles I will eat in the future. Thoroughly impressed with the service here; the overly-friendly, frequently-singing, always-yelling staff was a treat to observe as we sat at the high counter behind the grills, watching the well-oiled waffle and hash brown machine work away. I've never been called "sweetie" so many times in a half hour timeframe. Advice: Get the pecan waffle. Come back the next day, get another pecan waffle, etc. Try the hash browns as many differently-adjectived ways as you can. So real talk, y'all. My first dates with my fiancé were...interesting. One of them being a "sunglasses-on, 'OVER' stamp smudges on cheek transferred from hand, rat's nest hair, hey you want to go to the Awful Waffle" morning to remember. Seven years later, we're getting married. Long story short, there's something magical about Waffle House. While in town for Labor Day weekend, we headed over to this delightful little spot after a night of raucous shenanigans in a state of being that one should visit the Waffle House. There seems to be just as many people waiting as there are seated. Just before the hangry kicks in, we get a booth. They've definitely got a system here...someone gets your drinks, another person takes your order. Fance. Our order taker was equal parts quirky and endearing. I can't help but hear "The Bad Touch", by the Bloodhound Gang whenever I go to order my ridiculously oversized order of smothered, covered hash browns. Side of bacon has no song from what I know of (if you've got a song that says side of bacon, please shoot that over). They've also got that uber thick chocolate milk that my mom would scold me for chugging as a kid...Well mom's not here today, is she? Basically, Waffle House has menu items, but if you literally wanted an egg with slices of bacon instead of bread, they'd do it. i.e. Menu Item: *Texas Bacon* (or Sausage) *Egg & Cheese Melt* with choice of Grits, *Hashbrowns*, or Tomatoes. I have no idea why some things are bolded and others aren't (Jedi mind tricks I'm assuming). Apparently, our friend is from the dark side 'cause he went with the unbolded options, and it really threw...we'll call her Debra (I'm 36% sure that's her name), for a loop. Debra: "I have here you wanted the Texas Bacon Egg & Cheese Melt with Hashbrowns." Friend: "No, I was hoping to get a Texas Bacon and Sausage with Egg Melt and Hashbrowns." Debra: "Well, that changes everything." I don't know why, but that "changes everything" really resonated with me. But she made it work and switched out his order. After I had dug into about 10% of my hashbrowns and realized that this was literally the Mt. Kilimanjaro of hashbrowns and I hadn't trained for this, Debra asked her "section" to jubilee shout "I Love Waffle House." Apparently, this isn't common practice, 'cause even the staff was a bit shocked by our mid-morning (who am I kidding, it was like 11:30 am) exuberance. Either way, it was a memorable visit to a Florida Waffle House, and I have no doubt I'll return to change everything, again. read more

We have eaten at Waffle Houses a number of times. The food was good at this location but the restaurant was DIRTY. There were bits of food all over the floor, crumpled up paper on the floor of the booths. We were there at 10AM on a Friday and it was NOT busy. One of the waitresses picked up a broom and swept 2 or three times in one location and that was it. She did not pick anything up. We are staying right across the street and we like Waffle house because it is quick and tasty, but we will be trying another location from now on. read more

I just have the usual hashbrowns that they somehow make seem like treasure. Mushroom, cheese, jalapeño pepper. Had a Philly cheesesteak type of thing on Texas toast. I'm probably not calling it the right thing but some of you will know what I mean. The sandwich is phenomenal. The toasted and buttered bread with Philly cheese steak meat on it is great no matter what time of day you stop here. Wife had chocolate chip waffles and said they are the best she's ever had. Stopped in here for breakfast while on vacation. They have someone at the door that will take your name and # of people in your party. Had never seen that before at the waffle house, but once the breakfast rush started to come in - i realized why they do that. it is the average size of any waffle house, with tables that hold 4-5 people and counter service. Breakfast was awesome - ordered a ham, egg and cheese melt. Honestly have to say that was the best one I have ever had. Boyfriend ordered the Slam special and it was also delicious. Service here is fast and really very good. They are very friendly and efficient. If we are back in the Destin area, will definitely come back for breakfast. read more

This is by far one of the nicest staffed Waffle Houses I've been to. I mean it Waffle House so the food is the same as any other location you'd visit. I placed a phone order and the server who took my order remembered every single detail. When I got there she greeted me and was just as awesome in person as on the phone. The teamwork of the staff is apparent and they make everyone feel welcome. Karen went above and beyond on my visit. Definitely a stop for anyone who wants some good customer service.
