When I need a pick-me-up after work, or if I've been awesome and need to reward myself, I go for the Bangcock Dangerous at Waffle Bird. To be honest, I've been here a dozen times and I've only had the Bangcock Dangerous. For one, it's fun to say. But more than that, it's delicious and makes me happy. Perfect crispy fried chicken, a little sweet a little spicy, and the bun is the exact kind of bun a crispy chicken sandwich deserves. Get the extra piece of chicken stuffed in there, because you deserve it. I get fries with mine, and I've never actually had the waffles. I'm just not a waffle-guy I guess?

Have you been to the secret chicken & waffles spot in #yeg? Waffle Bird is tucked away in a back alley off Whyte (on 101 St) and this tiny hidden spot pumps out some delicious eats. Open for take out only, it feels like you're walking straight into the 80's with their black walls and bright neon painting. The waffles are Liege waffles (dense and breadier than regular waffles), and they're structurally perfect to hold fried chicken without crumbling. The chicken is fantastic - beautifully seasoned, not too battered and still moist after a dip in the fryer. We tried the Angry Bird sandwich which had a tingling, addictive heat soaked into a buttery brioche bun. The Breakfast at Chickadee's was intense; waffle topped with bacon jam, 1 or 2 pieces of chicken, thick cut brie (it melts into a creamy sauce blanket!) and a fried egg. Pour maple syrup over it for extra decadence. Oh, and definitely leave room for dessert because Woahnuts also lives here - a waffle/donut hybrid available in a variety of rotating flavours.

Is there anything better then Chicken & Waffles? This is the new restaurant that took over the Dangerkat Waffles location, located in the back alley just off Whyte. Once in the alley you can't miss it, it's a very bright colourful building. I had the Angry Waffle Bird which is there spicy chicken. I didn't get the full spice because you know getting older and heartburn, but the regular spice was very good, spicy but didn't blow out my pallet. Waffle Bird is take out only (very small location), but what they lack in size they make up for in flavour with their food. I would also suggest calling in advance to order your food for pick up as I waited 20 minutes for my food (they definitely gave me a heads up about the wait). Strongly recommend anyone checking this place out. Great people and fantastic food.

Jollibee fried chicken…read more I remember when the first restaurant of this Filipino chain opened up here in Edmonton, hearing that some people camped out, and I witnessed the super long line-ups of apparently loyal Jollibee followers that were there daily, the line-ups of which lasted for a couple of weeks. Good thing they had the large tents to shelter the cue from the elements as they made their way through line. I thought to myself, "Wow, I'm not sure if I've ever seen a line-up like that for the opening of a restaurant before! Once the lines go down, I'll have to try one day!" But not being in any hurry, I did some reading and research for what seemed to make the chicken so special, and tried making some "copy-cat" recipes at home, so the urgency of trying the real thing waned. Now that several more Jollibees have opened up over the past couple of years in Edmonton and through the Pandemic, and the long lines have dwindled, we finally decided to try the fried chicken. Having previous experience with Filipino style spaghetti, we gave that a pass. We ordered a 10 piece bucket to go, and the cashier allowed our request to substitute 2 pieces of the regular with spicy (though I like spicy, it usually covers the taste of other spices so I prefer to add something later). A pleasant surprise were the 2 containers of gravy that accompanies the order of chicken. The crunch of the evenly coated fried chicken was very, very good, nicely seasoned with a background taste of five spice. The meat was moist and juicy, and I'd guess that the pieces were brined prior to coating and frying. The pieces of thigh and drumsticks were quite large and meaty, much larger and more even than what KFC provides (Canadian KFC seems to use smaller pieces that the US does, but it's been a while for either since we've last had some). The evenly numbered pieces of drumsticks and thighs overflowed the bucket supplied, and it was impossible to fit the lid on, so the lid was supplied perched on top. As KFC doesn't seem to be as tasty as I remember it in the past, again admittedly a while since I had any, but we both thought Jollibee was much tastier. The 2 pieces of spicy were a surprise! As I said, I like spicy foods, and Jollibee's spice level was not disappointing! Likely too spicy for many people, so I'd advise caution for those not so inclined. As expected, if there were other spices like five spice powder in the mix, it would be difficult to pick it out, but as was the regular, the spicy chicken was very flavourful. The gravy was very good, not spicy and with a stronger umami and slightly sweeter taste than KFC. It went well on the fries that I made at home (par-boiled, tossed in a slurry of corn starch, and double fried for a really satisfying crunch). So Jollibee's fried chicken is certainly worth trying you get the chance, if only to see what the fuss is about. Certainly better than most other fried chickens available. I can see why Jollibee has become the successful chain that it has with its legions of loyal fans.

Too much spice and really, what's the point? Most of the sides are really good. Haven't tried the cajun fries yet, but the mashed potatoes are very good - if I didn't know any better I'd say they were real mashed potatoes. The rice and beans isn't much to look at but it's very tasty. The only damper on this place is the Mac and Cheese is disappointing and bland. Other than that, all the sides are pretty good. The desserts are pretty good as well. I haven't had the apple pie yet but I have had the strawberry cream cheese pie which is very tasty. The Mardi Gras cheesecake is a very simple concept - plain cheesecake with Nerds on them - but it's taste was absolutely stellar, which I was not expecting considering the way it looked. You get a biscuit with every order and it's awesome - you don't even need a knife to split it, your hands will do just fine. Overall, if you're looking for some deep fried southern US cooking at a good price, this is a good place to go. The only thing they could really improve upon is the parking for delays in your order is hard to find and a little inconvenient.

The chicken inasal was amazing. I was so surprised because the price was so affordable and it's also unlimited rice. I was satisfied with the two scoops of rice that came with the entree but the fact that unlimited rice was a built in option was great. Every bite of the chicken inasal was flavorful and delicious. There was a toyomansi (soy sauce + calamansi) sauce but I didn't use much of it because the chicken was already perfect to me. The chicken skin was crispy, the taste was savory and slightly sweet which worked together so well. It was a well balanced dish. The people serving us were so sweet. I'm filipino so the restaurant environment and how I was treated made me feel like I was at home. They gave us gloves so we could eat with our hands and I haven't done that in years (if you don't know how to eat with your hands, there are utensils as well lol). It took me back to my childhood. I loved how authentic the whole experience was. I'd bring my whole family here so they can enjoy it as much as I did. Anyways, this place deserves all the stars and business. I'd give this place 10 stars if I could. If I lived closer, I'd be a regular. This place is that good. They have more than just chicken inasal on their menu but that dish exceeded my expectations. Thank you for taking care of us!

They have been sold out before 4pm so this was happy to get an order on Thursday afternoon and they sold out after I ordered! I ordered a full spicy chicken and a half order of snow cheese chicken. Both came piping hot out of the deep fryer. It does take about 15-20 min to cook but the wait is worth the freshness! They are awesome and let you sit in your car parked and bring out your order when its done. But the smell was tantalizing. It looks like a local korean family owned truck and looks authentic and legit. And it is! I saw 3 customers all korean. So that is a very good sign. After 430 the line builds up quickly so try to get here early. The spicy chicken is crispy with a yummy kick. It isn't that typical spicy gooey goughang mess but it still has some spice to it. It's a dry spicy chicken with a light flaky coating which isn't at all heavy like other Korean fried chicken. Pleasures of eating fried chicken without the guilt!!! I liked the snow cheese as well. It was very flavourful. But those fries are really delicious. They coat them in the snow cheese and herbs and they are so delicious tasty and addictive. I'm not a big French fry person but these were light, crispy and soooo tasty. Glad to see a new joint open up with healthier fried chicken options in this city!
