Who doesn't love a fresh and classic sandwich? Who doesn't love a freshly baked pie? Fifendekel is one of those places that has been around forever, to the point where you might not regularly think of them. But maybe you should. Sandwiches and pie are their literal bread and butter! The Edmonton Journal named Fifendekel the Best Sub/Sandwich Shop 2021 which goes to show that even though they've been around for 41 years, this sandwich shop is still doing something incredibly right. While I've eaten their catering at work meetings many times in the past, I'm not sure that I'd ever visited their actual location. I was happy to pop in on a Saturday afternoon for lunch! Speaking of locations, Fifendekel has four of them in the city - you can find them in practically every corner of town. However, I believe that their southside shop in Coronet Industrial is the oldest. Yes, it's a bit of a weird area filled with a bunch of warehouses, but it's surprising the amount of cool businesses that can be found in these types of areas. Not everyone can be located on the coolest street in town and you will certainly miss out if you don't venture off of the beaten path. The restaurant itself is large and spacious on the inside with many tables for seating. There's room for everyone! The casual room feels like it was updated recently with modern paint colours and art framed in fun primary-coloured frames. Because of the large space I did find the lighting a bit dark as there isn't much natural light toward the back of the restaurant. Approaching the counter, it becomes immediately apparent that this is where all of the magic is happening. One counter is dedicated to creating customized sandwiches while the opposite side is a gleaming showcase of pie slices. The staff working was quite young and while they got the job done effectively, I found that they didn't have any desire to answer questions and seemed inconvenienced by much else than staying on task. I was excited to order a sandwich because the sandwiches are the main thing! It had to be the Auto Bahn (A turkey, roast beef, and ham road trip - $9.99) for me because it felt the most special. As you can tell, there's an underlying German vibe at Fifendekel. I was first asked the type of bread that I wanted. Fifendekel offers; white, 60% wheat, multigrain, rye, gluten-free, and their in-store baked and hand sliced sunflower bread. Clearly the best choice is the housemade sunflower bread. They didn't have it. The person making my sandwich seemed annoyed that I even asked for it. So I settled for multigrain. Made right in front of me, I was able to choose and customize the exact toppings that I wanted on my sandwich, creating my own handheld masterpiece. There were quite a lot of choices and I selected mustard & mayo, tomato, lettuce, sprouts, pickles, and both cheddar and havarti cheese. It was a tall stack! I enjoyed this incredibly fresh sandwich very much. While they didn't have the bread that I wanted, the multigrain was lovely and soft. It seemed to have been baked recently and was a delightful container for the rest of the sandwich - not too crusty or dense. The deli meats were of high quality. Their roast beef is touted as Alberta's best and oven roasted. All of the vegetables were beautifully bright, lending themselves to a rainbow of freshness between bread slices. This was an excellent, well-made sandwich. It's what a sandwich is supposed to be. I would have liked if the sandwich came with a little side of chips or something, that would be a really nice touch. We were struggling with what to order for my son and no one suggested The Essentials sandwich, which is purposely made for kids. I only realized that this was an option later. The staff just didn't seem very engaged or interested in being helpful. Of course soups and salads are a main meal component at Fifendekel. A sandwich with a soup or a salad is basically the most classic lunch that there is. After some consideration I decided to try the Curry Pasta Salad ($4.15 for regular size) which was the feature salad for the day. It looked pretty good! This pasta salad was a delight! The creamy curry sauce was distinct and flavourful, coating every piece of pasta thoroughly. There were nice crisp vegetables throughout and the biggest surprise were the raisins! I did not expect to find raisins in this salad but I loved them. They added little bursts of sweetness which balanced beautifully with the sweetness from the curry. I know that people "don't like raisins in things" but in this case it was a success. I wanted to try the Dekeled Eggs, a mini ham and cheddar quiche but they didn't have any. The other very important aspect of Fifendekel is the pie. The whole thing is the pie! In fact, the restaurant started because they used to make ice cream and they wanted pie to go with the ice cream. Been to fifendekel a number of times, it's a busy place, the sandwiches are excellent. Had the chicken salad sandwich and the egg salad sandwich. Both were very satisfying, I didn't have any but the pies looked delicious and so did the choices of side salads and soups. I heard good things about their sandwiches and pies, so had to try it out. We went in around noon on a Friday and all the tables were full already. The atmosphere was nice. I ordered the sandwich special of the day which was a Tuna salad on a whole wheat bread. The tuna salad tasted great, the vegetables were really fresh and top top it off the bread was amazing. I got to know that they make their own bread in store on the same morning. I tried one of their apple pies as well which was quite good. I'll be coming back for more. I'm a big fan of Fife and I think I've been to every location around the city. I like the setup of this one best. It's arranged in a U-Shape so you loop in and out and don't have to wiggle through other customers to get back to the door. Produce is always fresh and tasty. Bread is never old or stale tasting. In my experience the staff have always been friendly and ready to help. It can get hectic during peak lunch hours, but if you can go early or later (after 1:30) the crowd definitely thins out. Fresh ingredients, nothing overly complicated and the sunflower bread is baked in house. I almost never let myself eat bread anymore so when I do it better be worth it and THIS BREAD IS WORTH IT. Do yourself a favour and don't even bother with any other kind. As much as I enjoy a really good sandwich (and believe me, I do. I had heard so much hype about Fife N' Dekel that I figured it was finally time to try it. Ugh. What a disappointment. Why did I just spend $18 on two sandwiches I could have made at home? Was this supposed to be the appeal? "Home made?" My sandwich was dry (my boyfriend claimed this was because I didn't put mayo on my bread, which could be part of it, but the turkey was pretty dry too...) but the bread was certainly fresh. I like that they seemed to use really fresh produce, but again, I could have spent $6 at Sobey's and bought all the produce and bread and made myself the exact same sandwich. The place was hopping, and the line was moving very fast, so I can see the pull that this place may have. The desserts looked amazing, but I didn't try one. The only reason I would go back here would be to try one of their lemon meringue pies (which looked HUGE) or pecan pies. I will not return for the sandwiches. I have been going to fife and deckel for many years into various locations here in Edmonton. Noticed lately quality has gone downhill but especially at the 51st Ave. store which I believe was the first store here. Today on my way back from moving in between houses decided to stop for a sandwich and ordered the Montreal smoked beef. Service was slow as usual but it was 1130. Came home with my lunch took a bite of my sandwich and was looking for the actual smoked beef. There was one slice of thinly sliced deli sliced meat and 1/2 a slice in the whole sandwich. Was totally disgusted by the flavour as there was nothing in the sandwich. And also I'm sure a lot of other people in my position that money is not something we like to throw away on stuff that goes in the garbage. I don't know what's happening to the quality of food and quantity because I don't think one thin slice of meat constitutes a sandwich. Won't be returning it's just not worth the waste of money. Fife N' Dekel isn't anything special. At least their sandwiches aren't. The sandwiches are good but seem a bit overpriced for what you are getting. You could definitely make most of this stuff at home. I was more impressed with their desserts. They have one called the embellished brownie that is served with your choice of ice cream or whipped cream. Ice cream is the way to go. It is a really great dessert and it was less than $3. It's worth checking out but don't expect to be blown away. If I were to go again it would be to stop in for some dessert. read more

This is my new favourite sandwich place. I adore the roast beef on multi grain! The sandwiches are so hearty and really fill you up! Put sprouts on my sandwich? yes please! What the heck happened??? Fifendekel was once the pinnacle of good pie in Edmonton now it's the pits. Gone is their thick, flakey signature crust now replaced with a thin, tasteless one. The creamy, hand stirred, yummy, egg based, custard fillings replaced with starch based,bounce back, stick to your mouth, gobs of pure yuckiness. And the mounds of fresh cream topping, and gorgeous, thick piped, rosettes replaced with a thin swipe of cream, and a small edge of piping. Even the fruit fillings that used to be big, bright, and chunky, look like they were poured out straight from a can. Asked to stay or to go? Did it matter??? Even the in-house experience was lost on thin plastic plates with plastic forks rather than a dish and cutlery. The whole experience a loss. The only "upside"??? A reduction in price which "almost" reflects the reduction in quality. Oh Fifendekel...who did this to you my old friend? So sad. read more

This place is just down the street from my work so I stop in often for a quick lunch and it's great. I try to go early to avoid the lunch rush because it can get crazy busy. I wouldn't say the food here is particularly amazing but it's fresh and tasty. The sunflower bread is really delicious and made in-store. Lots of variety on the menu and specials that change each day. The pies are probably the highlight, but they offer plenty of other baked goods as well. Nice homemade quality to everything. read more

Love this place. Come here often for lunch on workdays, food is fresh, made from scratch, and is delicious. Your sandwich is made Subway style (i.e. you choose the type of bread, meat, toppings... etc.) before moving on to their side selections (Soup, salad, veggies...etc) and finally pass through the dangerous pie window right next to the cashiers.
