I used to be a loyal customer for past 5 years, but after recent two experiences, I am reconsidering. I brought my first car for oil change and asked them to check the reason for my car vibrations while driving. After sometime, they called me and told it is the brake pad, and I gave green signal to change it. Later that day I picked up my car and asked any other problems, they said nothing seen, everything alright. I started my car, and now it is shaking more than it used to. I drove for a few minutes and went back. So one of the guys took my car, went for a drive and came back and said, my tires need to change, it is very old now. I looked at the tires, and it is true, they were very worn out, but why didn't they see and report this firsthand while repairing the brake pads? Did they change the brake pads for real? I don't know. Also, as part of oil change, they say they set the tire pressure.. Didn't they see my tires while setting the tire pressure? Truth is, they didn't set the tire pressure as well, I could see it by the look itself, anyway I went ahead and changed my tires at Costco and now it is ok. Anyway this work at Vtec cost me close to $500. After a week, I went with my second car for oil change. This had tire pressure warning when I went in, so I told them to set it. They said, they do it as part of oil change. Again, they told me to change some things, again north of $400. So I went back to pick my car, and I felt the tire pressure is not set properly. I asked him when he was near my car, he said it is done. He took for a test drive, came back and I felt the tires are not set, so I asked him again.. He said, yes, it is done, part of oil change. I believed him and went home. Next day I started my car, and boom.. The air pressure warning.. So I took to a gas station, and all my tires are at 26-27, when they are supposed to be 32.. They didn't set the air pressure.. Why lie about such a small thing? Anyway I have lost the belief in their credibility, will not be going back for sure. Also I cannot really believe all the awesome positive reviews here.. am I the only one facing all the problems? God knows!!! read more

Best auto repair shop hands down. I took my brothers Prius in to get an oil change and they took care of it within 15-20 minutes. I had the car parked in the lot and you simply give them the keys, they drive the car into the shop, perform the oil change, and drive it back into the lot ready to go. They returned the keys to me and it only came out to be $25 including labor and materials. I intend to bring my own vehicle in the future when I come across a problem with it. I have been bringing my car to Jeff, Jimmy and co. for a while now. BUT, my last service experience was very FRUSTRATING! Had to come back to the shop twice to fix stuff that was not done right the 1st time. First, they didn't tighten the Air cleaner assembly while changing the Air Filter and so the car was making all sort of noises. Then they put in the wrong engine oil (0W20, where as my car is spec'd for 5W30). Also, there was the question of whether they put in the right coolant or not! I understand these mistakes happen but I cannot give them the benefit of doubt when they don't even own up to them. Throughout my stay they tried to convince me that all fluids that they put are compatible (certainly not true for the engine oil!). The icing on the cake was when I was told not to bring my car here anymore! Well, I certainly won't anymore. They definitely lost a loyal customer. read more

Love these guys, they are experts of Japanese cars and have not disappointed me past few years. They are honest and prices are great.

I've been coming to V-tech for a while to get oil changes done. You have to come in early to get first come first serve basis as they get packed into the afternoon. I would give them a 5-star rating based on that alone. I never had an issue until now: On my last oil change - Jimmy proceeded to tell me: "This is going to be the last oil change because all you do is come in for oil changes. We do other services and we cannot survive on just oil change." uh - WTF? First of all - don't advertise oil changes if you are just going shut a customer out. If you have that service as an option at your business - chances are people are going to keep coming for those services. It's business 101. Secondly - there hasn't been anything wrong with my car so what other services are there? you guys always do the diagnostic and everything seems to be fine from what you tell me in the end so good job there, buddy. To agree on some part - yeah - you do have other services. But I just come for the oil changes and I have been coming for close to two years - if this was a problem, why not advertise: "OIL CHANGES FOR CUSTOMERS WITH OTHER ISSUES". Thanks to my dad for lecturing me about cars and making me go shopping for auto parts with him when I was a little girl, I've built enough credibility to confidently say that these guys are not only very professional, but also honest. Most auto shops will tell you you've got a unicorn stuck in your engine and your car is growing a tumor which they can fix by refilling your liquids, but NOT THESE GUYS. They tell you exactly what work needs to get done after a full thorough inspection of your car, and charges you a fair price. Despite the 40 other cars lined up @ the shop, I was able to retrieve my car back the next day. read more

It's rare to find honest mechanics. VERY RARE. I'm always weary about moving because quite honestly....What if your car breaks down? Who are you going to call? Who can you trust? I feel like every bozo is going to rip me off because I'm young, Asian, and female....and because I know nothing about cars. Buying oil alone is $18 BEFORE tax at AutoZone!) $140 brakes Completely honest and thorough with the work they did. There's even a warranty on the bottom of the receipt! I moved to Costa Mesa, yet I still find myself coming back here. During my visit, the lady next to me informed me she still makes the drive despite her relocation to Long Beach. They have LOYAL customers for a reason! +++I know most of you will blow this off...but, I hate going into autoshops and having to use the restroom because 9 out of 10 times, it's FILTHY. I use to go to Vtech because my mom went there and that's where all my family members went for servicing. I've been around cars all my life. I'm not just another weekend warrior. About 6 months ago I brought my Evo here for a Clutch Repair. Supplied my own parts because they were trying to over charge me. They quoted me for a 4 hrs labor on the job. Book time for any AWD is 6 hrs. I doubled checked then tripled checked with them to make sure it's only 4 hours. Finally when I got it towed there, point of no return, they told me its gonna be 6 hrs. At this point I had to just get it done. They took 3 days and when I came in for pick up, the car wouldn't start. Even when my clutch was burnt it had no problem starting. Finally I came back a few hours after and they had the car running and told me it was ready. It ran like crap for about a week or so. Then about a week or two has past. My master slave cylinder took a dump. I took it back in and told them. They said they'll take a look at it and get back to me. At the end of the day. They told me the same thing I told them. And they wanted to charge me an extra 200. 80 on parts and 1 hour of labor. I also asked them if they bled out my master slave cylinder after the new clutch was installed. Their answer and I quote "oh, we don't do that here." Just a heads up, when you install a new master slave cylinder you'll need to bleed the system out regardless. After that point I stop trusting them. So the next day I went down to auto zone picked up the part for 20 and a bottle of dot 4 for 7 and did it in my drive way in an hour. In the end after about a month or so my car ran like sh!t to the point it won't start. I brought it to THE Auto Shop and they brought me out back and showed me the testing results in person. Got the car back up and running smoothly. Side note. I never received my old parts as I requested and by law a shop is suppose to return it to you if requested. Okay so down to the real reason why I'm posting this after 6 months. 1. My clutch is already going out. A stage 4 ceramic clutch... 2. My family just got a Timing Belt service done on their car and they were over priced and didn't even attempt to have her replace the Tensioner. The car ran like sh!t and they told her she needed a brand new transmission. I told her to Bring it to THE Auto Shop and they found it was only one solenoid gone bad. A simple transmission rebuild fixed the problem. Almost half the cost of what Vtech quoted her. This place may be cheaper than some shops out there but I rather pay for quality work that I know I can trust like THE Auto Shop where the Techs will bring me back when I'm confused or not sure. Bottom line- My family and I will never go, or recommend Vtech to anyone we know, ever again. It's not worth the head ache or disappointment. read more

CAVEAT EMPTOR - RUSHED AND SLOPPY JOBS I've been a customer of Jimmy and Jeff for years and I have been recommending others with Hondas and Toyotas to see them. Sadly, my trust in their business has been shaken. The bottom line is that they really need to pay more attention to their mechanics. I hate to do this, but I'm putting Vtec on blast for their occasional rushed and sloppy workmanship. What happened on my last visit was inexcusable and now has me questioning whether I can trust that things are being done right. Vtec does get busy and I understand that everyone wants their cars back as soon as possible. However, the quality of repair work should not be sacrificed especially since we're all piloting 3000 pounds of metal held together by screws, nuts, and bolts. My Honda has an aftermarket K&N filter. Those of you with K&Ns know that your filters come with a conspicuous octogonal-shaped warning sticker that you affix to your stock intake box so that mechanics know not to dispose of it. My first hint that something was wrong was a charge for a paper filter plus labor. For who knows what reason some voice in my head was telling me to take a peek under the hood and check the intake box for the filter. Sure enough, there was a paper air filter and my K&N was nowhere to be found. HOW THE HELL DO YOU MISS THE BIG WARNING STICKER ON THE AIRBOX? Apparently whoever this mechanic was did. Worse, he didn't tell Jimmy about what he did. Thankfully, my filter was recovered. But then it took a bit of persuasion to get $39 refunded right then and there and I was a bit put off by the haggling I had to do to get it. If that weren't enough, my tire pressures were set incorrectly. The invoice stated that the pressures were set to 34 psi...which is fine if I have a stock OEM tire size. But I don't. Even then, the pressures varied between 35 and 37 psi cold. 37 psi != 34 psi. Really??? Again, I understand that things get busy and Jimmy was noticeably overwhelmed. And he eventually made things right by cutting a check for me. I also hope that he gave that mechanic a serious ass-chewing. But my trust has been shaken after this incident. What if I didn't catch these mistakes? If these kinds of screw-ups happened, how can I trust what else was done to my car? Or not done? Will I continue to patronize Vtec in the future? As long as I'm in the area, of course. Their oil change price can't be beat. But I will be a lot more skeptical. read more

I've been going here for over 10 years. My older brothers have been going here even longer. They are completely honest. They use genuine Japanese parts, including Toyota, Honda, Lexus, Acura, etc. If you have multiple problems with your car, they will tell you which repairs need to be done urgently and which repairs can wait a month or two. People who complain about price are idiots. They use genuine original parts, so cost for those items cannot be that much different from dealership. However they charge ridiculously low prices for their service. Oil + oil filter change for Toyota and Honda cars in my family cost ~$20. Oil + oil filter change for my dad's Lexus was ~$30. He once paid over $75 at the Lexus dealership for an oil + oil filter change! When I told Jeff and Jimmy (owners of Vtec) about how much my dad paid at the Lexus dealership, they said that's how much it costs for the coffee and personal greeter at the Lexus dealership (and they both laughed in unison). The personal greeter at the Lexus dealership walks around, greets waiting customers, and throws a bunch of compliments at the customers lol. Over the 10+ years that I've taken my car (and my family's cars) to Vtec, we've gotten to know each other very well. Honest guys, low prices, and genuine parts = lots of business. Be prepared to wait for your car getting serviced, otherwise drop off your car and pick it up later. They say upfront they specialize in Toyota and Honda, so the Yelp idiots who b!tch about taking their non-Japanese cars and getting sub-optimal prices and service: I don't know how you've survived this far in life. read more

VTEC for my Civic!! Love this place. If you're looking for somewhere to have your Honda/Lexus fixed up and not willing to pay for the dealer fees and price - come here!! Found this place based off Yelp reviews. Initially came in for an oil change because it was cheaper than the dealer, but then I started to come here for my other needs as well. My Civic needed new break pads as they were squealing and I shopped around the dealer and pep boys for quotes. Both of those places definitely tried to pull an fast one on me and said I needed new rotors and pads. Then I took my car here to Vtech. They were super honest about the work I needed done (I came in here assuming I needed everything replaced), and they told me my fronts were at 60% and I just needed back breaks! The owners are Chinese so if you're Asian or have Asian parents who hate going to the dealer because they don't understand English (lol) come here!! They'll definitely help you out :) read more

I hate to admit it, but I was always "that girl" who was easily scammed into getting unnecessary extra services when I got my oil changed or any other type of maintenance. After spending $80 for an 'oil change' and a lecture from my parents, I knew I had to be more cautious. Then I found Vtec in Irvine. Not only does this place specialize in Hondas (yes, I'm an Asian girl who drives a Civic.. big surprise!), but they are also ridiculously honest and cheap! Every time I go here, I drop less than $20 for an oil change with a Honda brand filter. Furthermore, the first time I was there, they told me that my power steering fluid was leaking and needed to be replaced. He COULD have told me that I had to do it immediately, but he informed me that I should be under warranty and should take it back to my dealership. I seriously have never met a mechanic who was that nice! read more

Vtec is great for oil changes. They try to get you in and out quickly and they charge a fair price for the work. For oil changes, it's a no brainer from past experience. What concerns me is this: I had an old Honda with a busted universal joint so that the drive shaft no longer attached to the rear axle and was clunking around loudly. It's not a big deal once the shaft is removed but your car sounds obnoxiously loud within a quarter mile as the drive shaft swings and bangs against the underside of your car. I didn't have any big wrenches or power tools so I called ahead and asked Vtec to remove the 4 screws attaching the drive shaft to the front axle so I could throw away the drive shaft altogether and drive my car as a full time front wheel drive. It's basically a 3 minute job with the right tools. I confirmed with the guys at Vtec by phone and they clearly understood what I was asking them to do and said yeah no biggie, we understand you just want us to remove it off for you. So I get there and on the ramp it goes. Once on the ramp, they lost credibility with me when they tried to tell me I was looking at a major and necessary job to replace the entire drive shaft which would run me a few thousand and that my car would no longer run without a new shaft attached between the rear and front axle. I saw his eyes light up with green and I think he saw "sucker" pasted on my forehead. Luckily I understood the basics of car mechanics and I was seriously thinking, "Really you want to play this game? I thought you guys were better than that." I told them to reattach the broken shaft back on my car so I could drive away, and the guy's jaw dropped in shock that I wasn't the least bit concerned. Then I called them out, and he immediately backed off and said they would complete the job as we discussed by phone. He claimed to not be aware that the car would still drive without a shaft on but would take my word for it (if they really thought that, which I don't believe for a second they do, they honestly should close down as incompetent mechanics). 5 minutes later, I was off. The car is fine and runs really well now. So for oil changes, they are the king around Irvine for your Japanese import. I'd be weary of doing much else unless you understand your own car better than they do. read more

Vtec is a life saver. My only complaint is that they've gotten so popular that there's practically always a wait. But I can't blame them for being awesome at what they do. I love coming here because the guys are so nice and honest. They'll be straight with you and give you only what you need, no up selling or mysterious fees. I took my Infiniti G35 for an oil change after a search for a mechanic that offers an inexpensive oil change with decent reviews. The issues I have with VTEC are the following: - The cap for my coolant tank went missing. I contacted VTEC to see if they have or found it. No luck with that or any help for a replacement. I spent $10 or so for a replacement. - I went to another mechanic for my next oil change to discover that VTEC used rivots to hold the plastic cover beneath my car. I guess it was too hard to take the time to put it back together correctly. No recommendations or future visits from me. read more

The guys here are really nice and are honest. Dropped off my car for a oil change, came back later and total was $18 with genuine Toyota filter! Awesome price. I also noted my tires were low coming in and they found a 2 nails in 2 tires. I asked them how much it would be to fix, $5 per tire. The guy there did push me to get them fixed where I got the tires, Costco. Turns out one of the tires needed to be replaced entirely so I appreciate him urging me to go elsewhere for the tire repair even though they could've made an easy $10 otherwise. read more

Ever feel robbed or duped when dealing with car repairs? Well, I have. Many times. And as it turns out, I usually was getting duped. Vtec has prices below what I was quoted from other places. They're fast. And they seem almost obsessed with making sure that the customer sees and understands what is being repaired or replaced. I knew my brakes were really overdue for replacement. I brought the car in for an oil change, and on inslectiin they found my brakes were worn down and into the rotor. The dealer quoted me over $700 for brakes and new rotors. Vtec quoted me $300, resurfaced my rotors (still well within spec and nkt needing replacement), and physjcslly showed me the pads ans rotors and everything. AND the price inckuded an oil change. Also what's shocking they don't know what a "shift lever seat and cap" is. Wow!!! For guys having 10+ years experience that's scary. It sounds like they are your typical "part installers". A TRUE mechanic would know what a "shift lever seat" is. Well thank you for not taking my business...I went to Tanaka Auto in Irvine and he knew EXACTLY what the part was and knew exactly how to install. It only took him 30mins to install. I started coming here late '07 when I asked some car-minded friends about good place to go and close to work. They suggested V-Tec and they come here too. I got my major tune up ('02 solar) here and it seemed very reasonable :) I always get my oil changed here. They have never suggested random work for my car and have been very straight foward and open. They are also very nice. They can get busy so call ahead, or come here early and/or on weekdays. read more

Although they say they are only Toyota and Honda experts, they are also experts on any other brands of automobiles! Not only are they knowledgeable about cars, their services are not expensive at all! $17 for oil change? That is just awesome. The best part about Jeff and Jimmy is that they don't try to push you to do anything. When they feel it is unnecessary, they will tell you. Overview: VTEC Auto Repair is a small autoshop located within the Irvine Auto Park run by Jimmy and Jeff, two honest Chinese men who specialize in servicing Honda and Toyota cars (and their upscale Acura and Lexus bretheren). They also service other car brands but I'm not 100% sure if that's a per-case basis. The Service: It's hard to find honest mechanics and Jimmy and Jeff are two of the best. I think that says everything about this place. While the people are truly excellent, one odd thing about this shop is that they don't take appointments. Everything is on a first-come-first-served basis which is pretty darn great if you're a morning person. If you're not, then prepare for a longer wait. They're usually good about telling you which days are busy so you can choose a better time. The Establishment: Situated within the "ring" of car dealerships in the Irvine Auto Center. Lots of Chinese magazines to read in their relatively small waiting room. Chairs are comfortable. Conclusions: I love Jimmy and Jeff and will not go to any other mechanic. They're good guys that don't rip you off. My only problem is that you have to request synthetic oil and there's no chance for an appointment, but those are pretty minor issues to get people who don't try to scam you into more services. read more

I bring my civic here for most services. They do a much better job than those sleazy dealerships for a lower price. They explain the work they are going to do and don't search for excuses to rip you off. I've only brought my car in for service on a Saturday which can get pretty crowded. I recommend going in earlier since people come as soon as this place opens and they are only open half day. Great customer service and good prices. Definitely recommend this place to anyone who has a honda/toyota! read more

I know I just reviewed them on 7/17, but I just came back from here. MAJOR tune up for only $220 for my baby integra. We already got the timing belt changed, so that's partially why it's relatively less... but in comparison to the Acura dealership it's waaaaaaaaay more affordable. The quote the dealership gave my husband was over $700. My husband also came in this morning to get an oil change ($17) for his Accord and the tires rotated ($10). Total for his car was $28 with tax. He asked Jimmy if everything was okay and Jimmy responded with a kind, 'Everything is okay. Breaks are good.' It's always refreshing and less stressful knowing that your mechanic isn't going to talk you into having something unnecessary done to your car. read more

My brakes were making a funny noise so I took the car in to these guys and asked if I needed new brakes. Most other mechanics would take me for a ride for my money just for asking but they took a look and said, my brakes were still good for about 6 months. However, they said that the place I got them done at last time used aftermarket pads and not factory pads, so that is why I hear a wobbling noise every time I brake. I brought my car in because I thought I needed my brake pads changed, but they checked it out and told me that I could still drive on the pads I had for another 7,000-10,000 miles. Apparently, certain pads sound squeaky even if they aren't worn out yet. (that was the squeaking that prompted me to take my car in) They were completely honest and amazingly efficient!! I've been on a quest for a reliable, honest shop for a while now since leaving my "go to" shop in LA. The single most important thing is honesty, reasonable pricing and a shop that doesn't cut corners by using cheap/unreliable parts. Their communications doesn't come off as the friendliest and staff can be honest to the point that some may consider rude. But in the end, it's the work, honesty and pricing that matters most IMO. Their blunt honesty actually reveals their integrity in an example when I inquired about a service that I thought might be needed and they bluntly stated "Why would you want that? It's just going to cost you more money!" Less honest shops, would otherwise agree to service suggestions so they could increase their sales. I've overheard other similar examples while in the waiting room and these type of comments increase my confidence in that they aren't trying to oversell services to their customers. During another service experience, they accidentally quoted a part cheaper over the phone than the actual needed part. When paying the final bill, they wrote the invoice up with the correct, but more expensive, part and I was confused over the higher pricing at checkout. In the end, they honored the lower quoted price (at their expense). That's great customer service. I can't speak on their behalf for troubleshooting rare mechanical problems, but for general maintenance (oil changes; brakes; and 30k/60k/90k maintenance) they are very reasonably priced and do quality work. When money is of concern, they will help you prioritize what is essential maintenance versus what can be put off. As opposed to dealer service shops, who constantly upsell you on unnecessary maintenance. read more

I took my Wife's Mazda in here on a Wednesday afternoon and these guys did an amazing job fixing her brakes. It was about $60 cheaper than the anywhere else I took it and the job was done so well. I'm actually going to be taking in my Toyota to these guys now because they are so honest and affordable. They show you all the parts they're using, they have you meet the mechanics, and they let you know every detail of what's happening. At no point did I feel like I was being scammed or pushed into buying anything else. So glad I found these guys and I recommend anyone with a Japanese car to come here! They can fix other cars I believe but they have to order the parts separately. I'd still recommend them no matter what just because of how easy the process was with these guys. V-tech is my new go to mechanic. read more

I had used Vtec a few years back for my son's early 2000 Acura CL....always quick, fair priced and willing to offer low cost suggestions. The AC in my 08 Honda Accord stopped blowing cold air intermittently. I was told to just come in this morning and they'd have a look. Arrived around 9am, a few people already waiting, but was told they would have a look within the hour. As promised, within 30 minutes, they came to me and said it was a faulty relay...and it would take an hour or so to fix. I said to do it...and 45 minutes later I was driving away with ice cold air conditioning.... They are fair, fast and from my experience, trustworthy. I'll certainly use them for any other needs for my Honda and Toyota. read more

I started coming here when Jimmy and Jeff (the owners) just started many (10+?) years ago. I'm surprised I haven't wrote an review for them until now lol. I've fall in love with Vtec immediately after my first visit. Just as many other reviewers mentioned, they do NOT ever push to sell you any unnecessary services! I would say that beat 99% of the shops out there. Most shops I've been to, when you really just going for a simple oil change, will make up all those BS about how dangerously your car will break apart if you don't spend $xxxx to fix whatever thing immediately. I really love how honest and professional Jimmy and Jeff are. If they see something wrong, they will tell you if the problem needs to be repaired immediately, can last for another xxx miles, or doesn't affect the safely at all... and usually it's the later two! :) It's really hard to see an auto shop this honest. I've recommend them to all my friends and family. Because of their excellent service we pretty much only buy cars in the Toyota/Lexus/Honda/Acura families from now on, so we can have a piece of mind if anything goes wrong after warranty expires. My only complaint is that now I need to wait a much longer time than back in the days because their business has grown so good there are always people waiting lol read more

Excellent non-dealer option for service and maintenance work in Irvine area. Prices are a tad higher than in north/central Orange County, but worth the convenience. Minimal wait time on weekdays before 9am. In and out in less than an hour for oil change. read more
