I'd never heard of them before, but when I was driving by I had to make a quick turn to try it out. I'm guessing they get pretty busy because of the corrals. I do wish their displays were a bit easier to scan through. I can imagine in a full shop that it's hard to see what's available without getting out of line. The options were really varied and exciting. I wanted to try a ton of different things, but picked one and asked the person checking me out to recommend something. They were very nice and I felt welcome. The buttermilk bar is great. While the one they recommended was good, it wasn't quite as good as the buttermilk. I'd made plans to visit Voodoo Doughnut when it first opened up but wanted to wait a bit because the line was always ridiculously long. And then the Pandemic happened and I kind of stopped going out and the next thing you know, it's been over a year and I still hadn't tried their donuts. That was until I decided to just go and finally try them out. I went with my gf and parked in their tiny little parking lot, which wasn't an issue because there wasn't many cars parked over there. As a matter of fact, we were the only customers at the store when we'd arrived. We looked around a little bit and decided to try six different donuts and placed our order. We paid and we waited a bit and took some pictures under the Swayze painting and neon Don't Mess With Texas sign. And when our order was ready, what do you know? The cashier asked us if we would like to get a free box of mystery donuts FOR FREE! HELLS TO THE YES! We sat down, and we pretty much took a bit of everything while it was still fresh. Okay, not everything but the six that we had originally picked out; and we loved every single one of them. One that we liked the most was the Mango Tango. The Guava Colada was super good as well. At the end of the day when we (mostly I) had finished trying all the donuts, they were all enjoyable. Obviously they'd be so much tastier when fresh and not when they'd been sitting in a box for a day or two (we didn't finish all the donuts in one day, obviously) but they were good donuts. If there were a closer location to me, I could see myself stopping by every now and then to get one or two donuts for snacks. I received a gift card from Voodoo after my bad experience, and after 2 years, I found that there was still a balance on the card. Voodoo Doughnut has quite the reputation. The iconic donut shop started in Portland and has since expanded. Known for their very creative donuts, it feels like a Pacific Northwest hipster spot when you walk in. I stopped by to grab some takeout on a week day. Voodoo has a drive-through but I recommend that you walk indoors to get the full experience. They have t-shirt for sale and all of the donuts rotate in a spinning glass arrangement like you're at a jewelry store. How cool! One of the donuts I wanted was sold out which was a bummer at that time of day but I ended up finding another one to fill the void. One of their most popular donuts looks like a voodoo doll with a pretzel stick serving as the needle and raspberry filling. I also tried a donut which was dusted with tang so this starts to give you an idea of how creative their donuts are. They're open 24 hours so you can get your fix at any time of the day or night. It's been a few years since I returned so this place has been open for just about the same period of time. In between, I did get some a few times more. The last time was on a Thursday at around 1 pm. They get customers but there was no line when we were there. No one really greeted us when we walked in. There was someone in the back frosting donuts. There is a winding queue up to the cash registers so we walked through up there to see the menu better. After a minute, someone came up to take our order, but we weren't ready yet (we were debating on a dozen versus a few donuts because it's only 2 people each on both our ends). I ended up not doing the dozen. I was interested in their limited flavors and those aren't included in their dozen sets. Their dozen sets are concrete and include specific flavors that are predetermined. They are a great deal compared to getting them individually, though. I wish you could mix and match donuts to make your own dozen. My sister, who I was with, is vegan and I wanted a few non-vegan flavors. I felt like the lady was a bit stand-off-ish. She didn't really make suggestions or give tips. Just stood there looking like she wanted to get on with it. What I did get: Viscous Hibiscus (finally - they were out the last time I went), Bee's Knees (special flavor), caramel macchiato (special), the Dirt, apple fritter (this was HUGE!), and Sprinkle Cake. It was packed like normal - that is things were stacked. My 6 donuts totaled to $20! A dozen Voodoo Donut set is $25! That's what I meant that it was a pretty decent deal to get the set. But thank goodness we decided to eat some there because I discovered the Sprinkle Cake was missing! I double checked the box just in case it was buried (it wasn't) and my receipt where I clearly paid for it so I went back up with my box and pointed it out. I was standing for a while as the cashier had joined the lady in the back, but they eventually spotted me. She took off her gloves and I told her the issue. She got me one with a moment of hesitation - it was SMALL compared to the others - while saying how she was sure she didn't ring me up for one but she'll go ahead and give me one anyway. What?? Do people do that?? The Sprinkle Cake is only $1 so I overlooked the size - and because it was meant for my daughter and she doesn't need a donut the size of her face. Anyway, I informed her I did pay for one as I double checked my receipt and she responded with, "oh." No apologies for thinking I tried to get a freebie out of her. She returned to the back after that. I like Voodoo donuts for the fun flavors and their vegan options. It is the only donut place I go to with my sister. I know staff attitude can change by the person and the mood - there are such things as bad days. But this last experience wasn't great... and it wasn't even crowded! They only sounded happy when other coworkers came in! Maybe it was close to shift change? Either way, my husband already thought they were merely okay and overpriced. Now, I'm starting to think similarly. The donuts here tend to be fun but the texture is like normal donuts. Not particularly light or airy. I do still like them but this last visit? This time we also tried OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN since my bf loves cereal, but I was hesitant since cereal (and oreos) tend to come out stale. I was correct. Considering the pandemic, this location is still fairly new and gets allllll the hype. The lines are long even during the late night hours. My friend and I took a trek from kemah to Washington to explore the hipster joint. We spend nearly $40 on a dozen of the classic and then bought 5 specialty donuts. I admired how the classic assortment had something for everyone. My 5 year old was definitely overwhelmed with options! Of course he went for the "Marshall Mathers." They're a little on the pricey side for doughnuts but are definitely tastier than the local Shipleys. They have a fun spinning display of the flavors they offer with unique names. Definitely respect the "Homer" as this classic seemed to be my favorite. Icing and gooey filling everywhere, forget about opening and re-opening the box multiple times because the icing on the doughnuts gets everywhere. The Voodoo experience potentially has the affect to give off the excitement and make you purchase more than your belly can handle because of all the interesting flavors and designs in their doughnuts, but don't be fooled!...it's the "your eyes are bigger than your stomach/tummy..." experience really! The 2 donuts I received where colder than a pack of Hostess powdered donuts from an airport vending machine. In Minneapolis. During winter. With a layover. Their regular donuts are not your averaged sized donuts which could have been a good thing, if... they were good and fluffy. Instead these had the consistency of a cold King cake or a cinnamon roll that was dried out. They are huge, thick, cold and dry. I can see how someone could choke on one if eaten to fast. This explains the history of why they stopped the challenge from their Man vs Food year. The donuts are also very very sweet for my preference. For a Heights location, that was no surprise to me. I waited in the drive thru line for about 30 minutes. There are plenty of signs with all the donuts listed as you wait. I ordered 7 donuts: Mango Tango, Coconut Guava, Butterfingering, Sprinkle cake donut, Old Dirty Bastard, Maple Bacon Bar, Hi-Tea. Mango Tango- 5/10. My least fave. Tang was a childhood memory that should've stayed in my past but my donut was fresh. Coconut Guava- 9/10. A great combo of flavors and creative. Loved it. Butterfingering- 8/10 I absolutely love cake donuts and this was great but it was so much smaller than my other donuts.
