I typically don't go out of my way to support a bakery unless they're all vegan (the exception being Ronald's Donuts in Las Vegas), but after reading fellow vegan Yelpers' enticing reviews, I decided to give them a chance, and Voodoo did not disappoint. First of all, they did not just have one or two, or even three vegan options, they had an entire shelf of vegan donuts from which you could choose. I opted for an Oreo crumble and a caramel. Both were very good, but the caramel was definitely my favorite. Sweet icing atop large, soft yeast donuts... Drool! They make you wonder if they're really vegan! They are very rich in flavor and they aren't measly lil donuts either... I coulda/shoulda eaten only half of one and been full (but I didn't!). I love the funky, cool atmosphere. Lots of pink, lots of retro thangs. I giggled at how the velvet roped line made me feel as if I was waiting to enter a club. Club donut; where the party is in your mouth! Cash only. I was looking for a donut place because the girls wanted donuts. Voodoo Doughnuts was highly recommended. They had a large variety and seemed to be making lots of small batches to keep things fresh, so that was nice. I do think that they are relying on a long legacy of reviews and options didn't seem too innovative. They seem to just batch out old faithful recipes and the presentation was just blah. That being said, their donuts are phenomenal and among the best I've ever had. They have a massive selection of donuts, and even at 8pm, a decently long line of people waiting. We ordered 3 donuts: the mango tango, voodoo doll, and the portland cream. They were all AMAZING, but we enjoyed the voodoo doll and portland cream the best. They also made sure to package our doughnuts carefully and give us updates because we had to wait a bit for one. Taste I wish the guava colada had a bit more filling. I am a huge donut fan, and this should shock no one. It's well documented, and I talk about it often. Not my number one dessert or treat, but it's up there. But I think they're all good. So unless you have truly bad donuts, I don't think anything can really turn me off from a decent donut stop. Pickling beets to place them atop a donut? Nah, even that would have me coming back for more. Voodoo doesn't go to that length, but they were one of the driving forces behind getting super creative with the fried rings. Bacon maple, peanut butter, breakfast cereals--those indeed are options and they aren't the standard fare of old. I got to try a handful of them, though I didn't myself go into the shop. I actually really liked the Cap'n Crunch one. There's something about the texture of the cereal that plays well with the donut. The same can be said about the one covered in mini M&M's as well as the thick sprinkled variety. I think the base was good, the frosting was nice, and the toppings were a compliment. The Froot Loop one was a little incongruous, but I mean, again--these are donuts and it's all good. The only one that pushed over the sweetness edge for me was a pink frosting variety that was just too much sweet fruity frosting. But you know, I still ate it a bit of it, and then a bit more. If you peel back the hype of the Portland brand, and just go expecting some fun donuts that aren't too pricey, then you've going to be happy. I've heard about the famous donuts and since we were sorta close (45 minutes north in Berthoud) we headed to downtown Denver for the special variety pack of VooDoo Donuts. I cannot lie and say that I loved Voodoo Donuts because I didn't. I wanted to, but just couldn't get past the heaviness, thickness and dryness of the dough. I like my donuts to be somewhat light and fluffy, but these were so hard to chew and tasted like the toppings had been sitting out for a while. Im surprised I didn't review Voodoo doughnut yet. During my short visit to Colorado, I visited this location twice in one fun-packed weekend. The doughnuts are very soft and fresh here, since there is always a line and they constantly have to pump out more doughnuts at any hour of the day. I would recommend the Voodoo Man, which is filled with delicious raspberry filling. It is a human-shaped donut complete with an impaled pretzel stick "knife". Stopped by around 10am. There was no line which was nice. They have several different doughnuts to chose from even after the morning rush. I'm basic and got the 'Dirt' doughnut (raised yeast doughnut with vanilla frosting, topped with Oreos). It was delicious. When I visit doughnut shops later in the day I'm always afraid the doughnuts won't be fresh since they are sitting out all day. But it was still fresh & good. Doughnuts were very fancy & decorated! When we arrived in Denver, we picked up some of our friend's downtown & made this our first stop before heading to our room for the weekend. It was around 11p & there was a little line, but it moved fairly quickly. I've had this while I was in Portland & their creativity & freshness cannot be beat. I love maple bars, so I ended up getting the maple bar with bacon. You can definitely tell it was made fresh! The smell when you walk in just smells so sweet & tue environment was very welcoming. Let's face it, every so often I get hit with a doughnut addiction and I end up here to buy the doughnut called "the pothole". Don't get me wrong, Voodoo has a lot of different doughnuts but this is the one I order without any hesitation. It's only sold at the Colfax location, and it's just a long john topped with chocolate and oreos, filled with custard and decorated to look like the road. It's one of my favorite donuts and keeps me coming back to buy more. I mainly stop by to get some more interesting donuts like the Oh Captain, My Captain and the lemon drop (a summer specialty doughnut). I don't think I'll ever be able to walk out of here with less than 3 doughnuts, and I don't regret it.
