I tried doing all of my grocery shopping here and it was a complete disappointment! It is one of the only stores I've found that stocks Udis frozen meals for two and Amy's family meals so I tried buying my other groceries here instead of at Ralph's fresh fair and my experience was awful. The store is stocked super poorly. They don't even have a chip aisle...its just chips on random aisle ends. Also a lot of the yogurts were close if not already past the expiration date. The selection was seriously lacking and everything was so much more expensive! I couldn't believe how much I spent for how little I got. It was truly depressing. I'll never do all my grocery shopping here again! Back to Ralph's, the truly superior and less expensive grocery store. read more

Nice location.. it's a smaller Vons! But the staff and people who work here are very nice and helpful. I like going at night after 8pm then you miss most of the lines of people trying to check out. Great sandwiches as well for lunch they make here! read more

Over priced as all get out. Also only provides one checker most days even when incredibly busy. I spend more time standing in line here than purchasing groceries. I gave it two stars because of the locations convenience and the employees that work here are very helpful. It's just the systems in place (corporate?) that I assume are the problem. read more

Vons - Grocery Near Me - San Diego, California

I'm moved from San Francisco not long time ago and shopped at Safeway and many more stores .This store the best store in the area with very attentive workers and managers. It's a big student population, what its not easy to serve, women with little kids etc..No matter how busy they are general manager Scott, manager of meat department Angie, cashier Rose, just name of few ,will find time to answer of a customer. We all in service of each other, let's remember to thank people of this Von's. read more

What a pos store. I went in to return expired items that I purchased and didn't know were expired. Manager says I have to go back to the other store bc they don't want the loss. Wtf? Do not support this location. Wow. Never had this issue with refusal to return. read more

This store seems to have a limited amount of products compared to the Clairmont and Balboa Ave stores. The staff appears to be stressed and I find that the majority of them do not smile or offer a friendly environment. The bathroom smells bad and needs to be redone.( I have been in there more than once). The grocery lines always seem to be long, at any time you go in and it is because of lack of staff instead of many people coming in at that time. Maybe paying more and supporting the staff wil improve that situation. I dn't know. read more

I love this Vons. It's smaller so it's perfect for this little community. It has just what you need. They keep it always stocked well. Things have prices slashed to get rid of over stock regularly. I've used the deli for catering for my work. They always came thru on time and great quality! Platters serving 100 people. The employees are very friendly! Always asked if you found what you were looking for? Angela always would go out of her way to wave and say hi honey! Years of shopping you start remembering each others faces. I also like Paul the supervisor. He is good at his job. Always makes sure the lines keep moving. He always steps in to make sure things are right on prices. Quick to fix any issues. I have also seen him be very sympathetic, caring, and passionate towards customers and not so lucky community members. Even the stocking guy is really helpful late at night. I love the Vons app to get my savings! read more

This Vons has recently undergone a much needed renovation. They added an olive bar for some unknown reason. You can literally purchase any type of olive. Most of them from what I can tell are stuffed with something gross. The checkers and manager are all deligent and helpful but the deli needs to be drastically improved. It seems like the deli staff are never behind the counter. The food in the hot trays looks dried up. If you catch them at the right time, the chicken strips are awesome. I think they only make them in the morning and when they're bought up, that's it. Forget buying anything after 1:00 pm, that's when it look looks the worst. It seems that they stop cooking items after a certain time and whatever doesn't sell sits under the heat lamps for the remainder of the day. read more

First of all this Von's is not a supermarket, its more like your neighborhood grocery store, which it does fairly well. This is the closest grocery store to my house so I frequent it often and although it doesn't have a great selection it does have most of the necessities. I always check the tabloids for deals and they frequently have deals for the family sized meats. Be sure to take advantage of the rain check system. Ever try to get something that's on sale but there is no more and then you get that, "Damn it..." sensation? Well bad times no more just get a rain check and you can get the item for the same price. They close early though (12 AM) so if you're going on a late night beer run you might have to go to the Clairemont CVS or La Jolla Ralphs nearby. read more

This Vons is left over from the old days when we still had safeways in San Diego. They have no upgraded anything in the past 20 years other than the carts. Thank god, up until 6 months ago they had the same old steel carts from the 80's. As well, this Vons is very small and has a very poor selection of just about everything. read more

You know something's wrong when you'd rather drive to the other side of town to go to a different Vons... I made the mistake of not doing that tonight. I just needed to grab 2 things. Can't be that bad I say to myself. Wrong. This is still one of the most poorly managed locations I have ever seen. Expired products, poor selection, no assistance, dirty store and an extra crabby store manager named Paul. If you live in the UC area, do yourself a favor-either make the 5 minute trek West to Ralph's in La Jolla or the 5 minute trek East to the Vons in Clairemont Square. read more

Still THE worst store in the city. Produce is wilted and yucky. Not enough cashiers EVER. no eggs. I gotta keep driving... read more

I've never had a good experience in this store. In literally the most important customer service area- checkout- this store has failed spectacularly every time. Indulge me with an example: Wednesday night late- abnormally long line because only ONE cash register is open. Generally understandable, it's late (about 8pm so really not THAT late) and nobody expects to be shopping at this time. BUT then Thursday 5pm, right after work at peak shopping times...ONLY TWO OPEN, MASSIVE LINES! Why Vons. Why do you insist on making me wait 15 minutes in line to buy some yogurt. Ralphs always opens a lane when there are more than 3 people in line. And for peet's sake get some self service registers. read more

Two words: Roasted chicken I came on a $5 Friday where the 8 piece fried chicken (2 legs, 2 breasts, 2 wings, and 2 thighs) was on sale. They ran out of the fried chicken and only had roasted chicken so I just went with it. The pieces were smaller than your run of the mill chain fried chicken store but were well seasoned and very, very juicy. Definitely tastes better than Albertson's fried chicken! For a quick lunch or dinner, it's a very good deal. You'll even have lots of leftovers for a quick meal the next day! In general, I don't go to Vons all that often. It's a tad more expensive than the other grocery stores in the area (minus Bristol Farms of course) so as a college student on a budget, I usually just browse through the weekly ads to see if there's something on sale being sold for a cheaper price. Sometimes, you can find very good deals! I like this Vons more than the one on Regents because there's generally less people and the store seems a lot cleaner. read more

A horrible excuse for a gorcery store. This place lacks any sort of selection or convenience. It's a very small store, with the checkout lines regularly spilling into the aisles or around into other parts of the store. The meat department closes at 7pm? Hmmmm. You'd better decide what you want for dinner around lunch time so that if it involves meat, some jerk off will be behind the counter to wrap it up for you. The produce leaves a ton to be desired, number one... Fresh produce! I'd rather go to the location on Regents because it's slightly larger and the employees don't look seconds away from suicide, but it gets a lot busier in the evenings then this location. You have been warned. read more

I want so, so, so badly to give this Vons 5 stars because of the wonderful employees who work there who are always so kind and friendly but sadly, this store stinks! There is hardly any produce - I've walked in on several occasions and seen shelves completely empty in the produce department. I spent literally 5 minutes looking for tomatoes, and when I finally found them, they were soggy and no where close to being fresh. The other aisles are very limited with grocery items. I don't even think this place can qualify as a legitimate "grocery store," it's more of like a mini-mart type deal. And to make all matters worse, they never, ever, ever have enough people at the registers. In the middle of a weekday, I end up waiting 15 minutes to get checked out. Really hope someone from corporate notices these not-so-minor details and helps get the stores act together. On a positive note, the deli is pretty great. read more

Yikes, I haven't seen a grocery store this bad in a long time. Much of the produce is old/brown/already rotten (all avocados, for example). Strangely organized, old store in need of a refresh. read more

Waited almost one year to return to this store... NOTHING has changed! Stood in line forever on Saturday at 11:30am because there were only 2 checkers!! Store is still not clean. read more

I am constantly frustrated with this store and with myself for giving it another chance to improve. It is my neighborhood store and very convenient, but I now just have to drive to another Vons or a Ralph's. On every trip here, I come across expired items. CHECK ALL EXPIRATION DATES! Salami/prosciutto 2 months past expiration date in the deli cold case. Yogurt weeks past expiration. Milk ten days past expiration. Even found crackers 2 months past their sell buy date. Produce always looks like it is no good. Never staffed well resulting in long waits. Some of the staff are very nice, others just seem miserable having to work in this poorly run store. read more

Vons has a cashier at the vons on Governor Dr. name is Angela. Really friendly, helpful women.

I can't stand this VONS. The only reason that I come to this one is because I work right by it.. ugh It's too small! Their selection is limited.. which sucks because the Vons that I usually go to is SUPER big and has a wide variety of selection!! Plus everything isn't so scattered like the Vons off of Governor is!! Everytime I'm in there (which is around lunch time) they usually have a huge line. THe deli usually has a line and that's because their is usually only one person working back there and when i'm finally ready to check out I once again have to wait because they only have 3 cashiers that are open. The people in there are very nice.. it just a little fustrating to find someone to help you... read more

Like others CHECK EXPIRATION DATES before you purchase ANYTHING at this store. I'd actually like to look into reporting this store to corporate because there has got to be some serious managerial problems here that result in selling expired foods routinely. For example in the dairy section? Expired, or expiring within days meaning it's been sitting for several weeks already. That aside, the store is very small, so many things will not be stocked here. (I never thought a store in America would miss out on a chip/snack aisle- those items are only found sparingly on end caps, here though!) I only frequent this store because it's so close to me for picking up a quick essential (though even this proves troublesome given the recurrent expiration date problem) or some fruit advertised in the circular. Otherwise, I'd recommend you pick up your groceries elsewhere. read more

CHECK EXPIRATION DATES on everything you put in your cart at this store. This month I've found cheese and cottage cheese that were at least a month beyond the expiration date. Yesterday I bought greens that turned out to be slimy and gross when I got them home. I shop here a lot because I live close by. The staff are helpful and friendly but the store stocks a lot of expired stuff. read more

I live across the street but will do anything to divert elsewhere. If I need a Vons I will go to the one off Claremont Mesa. Always out of everything, always overpricing things where I have to go back & get my pricing fixed and most importantly very rude employee! Oh and if you look at most reviews here they mostly mention expired products ALL THE TIME. Why does the corporate office let this happen. I'm definitely the majority in the way I feel here! So sad! And if your looking for fresh produce Sprouts is just a few blocks away and not only super fresh, WAY CHEAPER!!! read more

It's interesting to read so many negative comments about this Vons location. I've lived in the area for more than thirty years and experienced this market change over that time. It is not as large a store as the other Vons locations nearby. What it does very well is fill a need the neighborhood has for a major grocery store. I find the management and employees of this store to be top-notch. It does get crowded because it is the only store we have. I appreciate this store and shop here several times each week. read more

Unfortunately, this is one of the worst grocery stores I have ever been to. It is also too bad because it is in walking distance from my house. The customer service (friendliness of cashiers/being acknowledged) is usually lacking and it's hard to get help in the deli section as I am usually ignored by employees in the vicinity. Let's not forget about the long lines due to minimal check out stands open. This location doesn't offer self checkout to help speed things up either. Stock on items seems to be limited and I can never seem to complete my shopping list. A couple examples: I went there a week ago in early afternoon to get some zucchini for dinner...only to find there were none left. Another time I needed jalapeños for a dish...there was one left. One. Just know if you shop here, don't be in a hurry and don't expect to get everything on your list. You will most likely have to make another stop. read more

This location has helpful, respectful employees. The checking out process is usually slow. I am not sure why. Perhaps they could have self checkout to help speed up the process? read more

So the one reason I keep going back to this shitty grocery store is because it's right down the street from where I live. And if I wanted to pay more for my groceries, I'd go elsewhere. But alas, I'm stuck with this place. And you know, I kinda like the store because it reminds me of the Safeway grocery stores back East but I am repeatedly amazed by how terribly I'm treated here. It'd be one thing if I went into your checkout lane with a scowl on my face, cursing you and your employers about your lack of selection in the things I need. But I don't do that. Infact, yesterday when I went in, I was in a great mood as I just landed a job and had gotten my new CA DL (and passed my test only missing 1 question. BOOYAH!) However, my mood changed when, after hunting around the store for the two items I needed, I made my way to the check out line to a guy who I've had ring me out on more than one occasion. Alex, the check out guy, had a piss poor attitude which just made me want to ask him "Did I do something to you? Did I just shit on your day or something? Because I thought my sunny disposition would have warmed your ice heart and maybe made you smile as well." Needless to say, everytime I go there, I feel as if the cashiers look down on me and have a horrible attitude. It's called customer service people! Learn about it before you work a job where you have to deal with people. Grr. read more

This is the worst store for customer service!. Tonight (1/19/22) went into the store at 6:10pm to grab a bottle of wine. Apparently their system was down and not taking debit/cc cards. The cashier told me to go over and see Paul who is apparently a supervisor. Walked over there and he did not even look at me and just held up a finger ( I guess I needed to wait?). Another customer was right behind me with the same issue (apparently they were having issues). Finally he deems to look up at me - says absolutely nothing - no how can I help you or anything (it's a customer interaction right?) I let him know the cashier sent me over as the system was not accepting cards. He immediately told me it was my chip at fault??? Clearly it was not as I'd just used the chip previously at another merchant. I tried to run the debit card again it was the Vons system that was down. He told me "your card does not work" again. I said no it seems like your systems are down given all the customers standing behind me that have been directed to you. At that point I gave up and left the store giving him a piece of my mind which he thoroughly deserved. Went to CVS brought a bottle, very nice clerk, their system worked. As I was leaving ran into the customer who had been standing behind me at Vons. She told me Paul gave her exactly the same non verbal, non helpful attitude. We both agreed the WORST Vons in San Diego, Paul is a complete embarrasment to the store and the company. Never use Vons again on Governor Drive, even though it's 1/2 mile from my house. Worst customer service experience! read more

It's a grocery store - how bad can it get, right? No. I honestly really, really dislike coming to this Vons. I live RIGHT next to here and I would much rather go to Henry's or go out of my way and drive all the way to Ralphs in La Jolla to avoid this particular Vons. The selection is rather minimal for such a main grocery store and more so at the deli. Also, I found the staff to be pretty unhelpful. However, the worst part is at night. I've been here several times around 10 pm and see them restocking for the next day. The problem is that they just have piles and piles of inventory blocking anything and everything in the back aisles. I understand you need to get your job done, but do it when you're closed or at least do it section by section so people can access the things they need. I've found myself pushing heavy piles of crap away just so I can find and reach some orange juice. The staff can obviously see that I can't see behind these mountains of boxes and they do nothing to help. I think the only redeeming thing about Vons MAY be their soups...although I don't think it's even that great. read more

These reviews are too funny. First of all the person complaining about the pharmacy uh.... This store has no pharmacy. Second of all Vons always carries wild salmon when it's IN SEASON . Long lines 90% of the time. If this was a family run store I'd be more sympathetic but it's not. It's part of a giant chain that charges a premium for its products. This Vons should not be a Vons, but rather be called Shitty Shitty Grocery Store. They literally have a very minimal selection.

I yelped the other Vons in San Diego and found 1 other with a lower rating. This was an injustice that needed to be righted immediately. I am confident that this Vons is the worst one in San Diego County if not the entire state! I wish I could conduct a double blind experiment to prove this Vons is THE.ABSOLUTE.WORST. My hypothesis is that unfortunate test subjects exposed to this Vons versus placebo would experience unusual episodes of confusion, followed by frustration and anger. Effects can last from several minutes to hours or even days depending on esposure. read more

It's a grocery store. A grocery store located in a shopping center with the least well designed parking lot on the face of the planet. I hate going here just for that reason. But, it gets the job done. There have been a handful of times in which they did not have items that I was looking for. That always bugs the crap out of me. The deli workers have always seem to hate their job. I have yet to have a pleasant experience with them. Save your money. Go to Target and Henry's/Trader Joes. read more
