This store is well-organized and clean, with a simple layout that makes it easy to find what you need. I frequently shop here for frozen items like salmon, shrimp, and fruit for my smoothies. One of my must-have items is their arroz con leche (rice pudding). It's absolutely delicious! Remember to bring a quarter for the shopping cart, but if you forget, you can ask the cashier for one

I had a good experience at this Aldi. I picked up a number of items that I needed. Items were pretty well organized and easy to find and get to. I was very happy that they had the pastured raised and organic chicken eggs in stock at this location. They did need to restock the breads aisle because it got hammered by the earlier crowds. The young lady at the register was very nice. She had a good sense of humor, and she actually helped my bag my items in my own bag that I brought from home.

Visited this Aldi store during my visit and closer to the hotel to get my basic cooking essentials. The store is well stocked, easy to navigate, staff is friendly, and has affordable prices. The interior of the store is kept very clean and well maintained. The produce, dairy, egg and meat, everything is stocked with good quality. They have a shared parking lot with enough parking spaces.

WOW, I am so impressed. I've heard anecdotally about Aldi's being a sister grocery store, who shares the same owner as Trader Joe's, whom I already love. But this place is better! I went during Covid19 -- but no lines or wait -- just 6 ft distance marks throughout. 1. So inexpensive for high quality fresh food....just a few bucks . . . red fresh strawberries ($1.29), brussel sprouts, spinach ($2), bananas; so many different kinds of breads ($2 to $5); lunch meats, cheeses, and pre-made Thai curry chicken ($6). (And sure enough, every bite was delicious! Especially yummy were both thai chicken curries--OMG--the dark meat one in an orange sauce was sweet and tangy; the white meat one in yellow curry was more traditional) 2. Perishables like eggs ($1.59); almond milk ($2); regular milk; lots of frozen vegetables ($1); and some pre-packaged items were cheap. Also had a decent selection of other staples like pasta, peanut butter, sugar, crackers, etc. again at a really reasonable price. 3. Household goods--appliances, housewares, some clothes, water bottles, soap, personal hygiene stuff--I didn't expect to see this! I watched others to learn that you deposit a quarter into the slot on the right side of the cart's handle (carts are locked up on a chain together). You get the quarter back when you stick the "key" into the slot and return the cart. I don't quite understand the cashier just putting stuff back into your cart and that you have to self-bag, but now the Facebook videos make sense!

Can't say I'm a big fan of this place. The prices (especially on produce) can be relatively cheap, but sometimes the quality can be iffy. I recently bought a bag of avocados (5 to a bag) and only 2 of them were decent enough to eat. I've had no problems with their $0.29 per lb bananas though. What really gets me about this place is the lack of customer service. I'm not talking about the $0.25 quarter deposit for a shopping cart and bagging your own groceries, it's the people that work here. I've been here three times and I've never once been greeted or asked how my shopping experience went. One time I uncomfortably stood there waiting for my receipt, when the clerk started checking out the person behind me, while I was still waiting for my receipt. The clerk was like "You want your receipt?" Another time with my mom, I noticed that we were overcharged for hot dog buns. The advertised price was $0.25, but it came out to $0.89. Granted we're not hurting for $0.64, but it's the principle of the matter! My mom asked the clerk about the price discrepancy, and sheepishly responded, "Well... that's what it rang up as." I went back over to the sign, took a picture of it, and showed the clerk, who then had to call over the manager. Apparently, the sale had ended the previous day, but the sign was still there. I also pointed out that there was no ending date on the sign. We did get a refund of $0.64. Not sure if this place is going to make it. The majority of people that live in Mira Mesa live closer to Vons, Sprouts, Smart and Final, and Grocery Outlet, where the selection is better and (generally) so is the customer service.

I remember when this land was dirt, shrubs, and a few rabbits. While I was in junior high Mira Mesa Blvd ended at Parkdale and it was wilderness till you got to the 805 freeway. I liked exploring the desolate wilderness. After the rain there were vernal pools. Now those primeval pools have been replaced by houses, malls, and office buildings. This particular spot housed a Fresh and Easy for a time. I watched as it was demolished and now there is an Aldi. Aldi has some interesting cost cutting innovations. You can barrow carts for inside use for a 25 cent deposit. This eliminates the entry level cart boy position. There are no grocery bags so the cashier doesn't have to count how many bags you use and charge you. Instead your groceries are placed in a shopping cart and you then step to the side and bag your own groceries if you brought a bag. Ice cream section seems to be filled mostly with low priced options I have not seen before. I was hoping for some high quality options like Trader Joe's. Cookie section was filled with brands I never heard of. From the photos on the packages they seemed to be knock-offs of famous brands like Nabisco. Soda water options seemed ok. Barq's Root Beer float tasted just like Barq's Root Beer. Nice sweet flavor with a bit of bite. Delicious treat but the tube is small and I'd prefer it in a pint container as the tube seems a waste of packaging. Clancy's Cheese Curls were crunchy with very light cheesy flavor. Cheetos are much more flavorful. I would not buy these again. Clancy BBQ Potato Chips were crunchy and had bbq flavor. Quality is similar to store brand chips. I prefer Lays but these chips were ok. Southern Grove Dry Roasted Peanuts with Sea Salt look much like the Planters version. Peanuts were crunchy with salty flavor like Planters. I like the flavor of Planters version a bit more. Southern Grove Honey Roasted Peanuts looks like the Planters version. Peanuts were crunchy. Seasoning had a sweet and salty flavor. I didn't like the flavor and wouldn't get them again. Aldi might be a bit cheaper than Vons or Ralphs but I prefer the flavors of name brand foods. The knockoffs I've tried here don't taste as good to me. I'll be back for more frozen Barq's Root Beer though.

Date of visit: July 17, 2019... and review #1300! Aldi's been open for a few weeks now, and given how I wanted to get some groceries in preparation for San Diego Comic-Con thought that now would be the proper time to visit the newest grocery store in what used to be the Fresh & Easy and Bevmo buildings. The parent company of Trader Joe's (betcha didn't know that, huh?), this German-based company is known for its low-priced groceries and staples. Plus, going in, I had heard great things about their frozen pizzas thanks to my girlfriend and her family who had a location close to their place in L.A. County. So... Two things struck me when going inside for the first time: how clean the very expansive building was, and how... basic everything in stock looks. One of the reasons why Aldi keeps their prices low is that they stock up on generic products - and while some of them taste like the real thing, a lot of the time it feels like there's something missing. Case in point: the chocolate-dipped peanut butter granola bars I got to fill up on during SDCC. While they were certainly much cheaper than the Quaker Chewy version, the taste just seemed bland. And the generic 5-Hour Energy Boosts only kept me going for more like 2 hours. While the fruits and veggies were certainly fresh (the bag of Rainier cherries I bought is still good almost a week later), I could do with more of a selection. Also, while I knew about the quarter redemption from renting out the carts, I didn't know that Aldi not only has you bag your own groceries, but they don't offer their own shopping bags to purchase. (If they do, please let me know). Maybe it's because I'm closer to Grocery Outlet, Sprouts, and Vons, but I just have this feeling that Aldi could be so much more, especially with that pedigree... but at least the folks in Sorrento Valley have a grocery store that's close by so they could pick up some basic staples.

    It's open!

At long last the UCSD Farmer's Market is back!…read more A few things have changed since its last iteration from before Covid. First, and most obvious is the location. Before, it was located at UCSD's Town Square, which I thought was pretty inaccessible for non-students. Now, it's located at the Epstein Family Amphitheatre, which is conveniently located next to the UCSD Central Campus Trolley Station and the Gilman Parking Structure. It's a really beautiful setup, with plenty of outdoor seating, whether you want to sit at the lawn, the various tables and chairs, or even the amphiteatre seating itself. There were a few vendors that have usually set up at the market, including House of Bao, Bubbas Hawaiian Snack Shack, Belinda's Familia, Seb Panini and a Sambusa place. I think it's a pretty good lineup, but I noticed the items are very expensive. Further, the selection outside of prepared foods was pretty lacking. There was a florist, but I think more fresh fruit and vegetable options (that accept EBT!) would have elevated the experience and helped with the food insecurity issues that plague college campuses. I ended up visiting Belinda's, where I was enticed by some free samples. I had a chorizo egg burrito, which I thought was really good and a deal for $10! Overall, I think the return of the farmer's market is a net positive for the community! I visited on re-opening day, so I think a couple more weeks will help iron out the selection and variety issues!

From delicious food, to fresh produce, to the most gorgeous and vibrant flowers, to beautiful pottery, to unique clothes... you name it, they have it there! Make sure to come early as parking can be a bit tricky, especially if you want to park closer to the farmers' market. Once you get parked though, everything is a breeze. They even have tables and chairs around for people to eat at. There's also a playground for families who have little ones! I could never go to a farmers' market and leave without fresh flowers, so of course I had to pick up some from Hidalgo Flowers. They always have the most colorful and stunning arrangements, and for a decent price too. This time, I got a bunch with the prettiest sunflowers. We also picked up the sweetest and reddest strawberries from this one vendor. I highly regret not getting their name, but I will definitely be on the hunt for them the minute we go back. We got a cup of strawberries with some dark chocolate sauce from Strawberries and Chocolate. That was sooo good! We devoured it so quickly, we didn't even get to take a picture of it. One of the standouts for me was the Pork Sisig Rice from Baryo Eats. It was AHHHHMAZING!! It's the best kind of pork sisig that I love to eat--the taste was so good and nostalgic, it took me back to my college days back in the Philippines! HIGHLY RECOMMEND. We also got some Paella from Driana Catering/Taste of Spain. It was so flavorful and the rice was cooked to perfection. We were just sad they ran out of shrimp by the time we got some, so we were left with chicken only. We got some goodies from It's Cafe Thai as well--Milk Tea with Boba, Taro Thai Coffee, and the Mango Sticky Rice. All of them had just the right amount of sweetness and hit the spot for us. Lastly, we had some of the watermelon and the cucumber lemonade refreshers, and the chicken and pork tamales from Gourmet Tamales. They were so good, we even took some home for later! Overall, I'm already looking forward to the next Sunday we can stop by this farmers' market!
