I've always liked shopping at World Market. They have all kinds of cool home decor, food, snacks, furniture, kitchen gadgets, and most importantly, a Hello Kitty collection! This review will be about World Market, the company in general (formerly Cost Plus | World Market), and *NOT* about this particular location. I've been a customer of World Market for many years, across a number of their locations. I have no particular complaints about this location. As with their other locations, this is a nice place to discover various items from around the world. My major objection is that their rewards program and coupons are pretty much worthless -- at least for me. Because a tremendous percentage of what's in the store is (almost always) EXEMPT from their applicability. I'm not in search of furniture, furnishings, etc. in their stores; I come in primarily to browse their exotic food and beverage section, often spending a tidy sum on such merchandise. Let's emphasize that word again: EXEMPT. And when it comes to the pricing level for those items it's not like we're talking about any great bargains here either. Beyond that, I came in recently to make use of a "Shopper's Reward" (accumulated discount value, possibly not exempt ?), only to find that it had expired after around 4 or 5 days. That's Bogus, that's Pathetic ! Even worse than the extremely short-lived coupons from CVS ! The excuse offered by store personnel is that it's Corporate Policy, handed down from on high. Someone really needs to tell Corporate -- *in a Major Way* -- that this policy really sucks, is no way to garner brand loyalty or good will, and they definitely ought to rethink it ! So I'm forced to downgrade this from what would otherwise be a higher rating. read more

I am new lover of World Market, I had placed an order for some cute little bowls and a Ben and Jerrys x Tony's Chocoloney. This location was one of the only places that had it. Upon our first visit, I was hooked. The store is so clean and spacious and had so many amazing goodies, plus the team here are just super friendly. Not the usual World Market for me, but now I hang out a lot in the UTC area and this was the closest to get some Spanish chorizo, cheese, olives, etc for Spanish tapas night. My boyfriend was super stocked to see all these goodies in a store so close to him, so he will go back on his own to get more stuff. He knew the store but was thinking was mostly to buy decor or wine. When I showed him the different categories of goodies by countries, especially the great products you can get from Spain and Italy, the foodie in him was in heaven. We got also a couple of different Italian pastas, always interesting to see how those are cooked, they have so much variety is incredible. Hubby, daughter and myself came here because we love all the stuff they sell here. From food to furniture. Hubby found some flavored sodas like mango and blueberry. My daughter found a boba canned drink and she liked it. A thumbs up from her. I found Hello Kitty soda pop in the cans. That was the coolest thing ever. I found other random items. Walking and passed by this afternoon, we got plenty of time to nosy up so we came in. I thought it was a home good furniture store, not quite. They have small selections of couch, tables, chairs, rugs, wall decors. Prices, not reasonable. The end of the store towards the back you find a section of wines, hand crafted beers, snacks etc. Entrance- you'll fine home decors, a tiny space for beauty shenanigans. White privilege proudly observed by employees here! Disgusting! We were in the checkout line and a blond white woman and her daughter cut off us Asian and Latino folks waiting to checkout. She said she should go first because she only has a "quick exchange", said with an "I'm better than you" attitude. Pre-covid, I absolutely loved World Market. I love all the specialty items they have here and I could spend all day in here looking at all the items. But my favorite part are all the foreign goodies, snacks, and chocolates. I came here to purchase items for Christmas, since I thought it was a great place to gather some goodies outside of the US this year since no one is really traveling. I think due to covid, I found many items that did not have any price tags. Some items had a piece of paper listed and I had to search for the item to see what the price listed was. Many items such as chocolate, or even some pre packaged items (like curry) were just a month away from their expiration date. One item had an expiration date of 10/31/2020 when I went in around 11/7/2020 ?? Because of this, every single item I was interested in I had to look at the expiration date because I couldn't trust that the items were fresh. So, if you are planning on going to World Market or purchasing items online, please be aware of this. These days, I try to just get in and then get out. Having to look at the expiration dates for every single item, search for items on a price list or look for the label made my trip that much longer. I understand it's not easy during covid times, but it became more inefficient and increased the time I was there longer than I would have liked. There were more people inside than I was comfortable with as well. Having said all of the above, the workers themselves that I interacted with were very helpful. The woman who helped me at the cashier was super nice and friendly, which was nice since none of us can see each other smile. I could feel the smile as she was telling me about her experience with one of the chocolates I had bought. They have sanitizer in the front as well as wipes, so I love that, the cashiers all have plexiglass installed and all the workers are wearing masks. The customers that frequent the store are hit and miss (mostly hit), but they didn't really practice social distancing. I won't fault World Market for that, but it made me uncomfortable enough I probably won't return until after the pandemic is over. read more

I remember when World Market opened over 30 years ago. Back then, the store had so many unusual items never seen in any other store of this type. Before, the merchandise represented so many different countries: Africa, India, Mexico, Greece, Italy..you name it..each country was represented beautifully. And I also remember things had such affordable prices. Very affordable. Some were even a steal for being so unique & pretty. So I was telling my daughter about the store because she was looking for something I thought they might have. So off we went & enjoyed looking around. She & I both bought a few small things, but they weren't cheap. The store has changed, and not so much for the better. Everything is made in China. Okay, I'm a tad incorrect: I did see one thing obviously from a different country: a beautiful wood cabinet from India, priced at $500. What? Are you kidding me? $500??? This cabinet had ornate sparkly things on the outside of it, with a few random lines of tile decoration. The toggle opening to the cabinet was cheaply put together with jute & badly done to the point it might break if used too much. I decided it was just a decorative cabinet you'd probably not use much. Too rich for my blood for $500. We had the items we wanted to purchase in our cart & headed to the checkout counter. The young man who waited on us had the personality of a rock. No smile, nothing. Nothing was said; he was just scanning the items. I was prompted to enter my phone number in the key pad. Then my PIN number, then a swipe. All done. This is where the young man failed me. He then asked if I had a discount club card to which I replied "No, but can I apply it toward this purchase?" He said, "No, you're done. But you can sign up for it next time". Shouldn't he have asked about whether or not I had a club card before he rang me up? Absolutely. We won't be back, except to return one item, which is defective. Was shopping a couple months ago when I witnessed a employee being scolded by a manager named GILBERT , she than went up front and cashiered as I was checking out with her there was a younger employee being extremely impatient with her and rude . I'm a regular and I've seen this employee work extremely hard she is a older women and you would think these employees would have some respect for this amazing women , I asked her name she replied Debbie with a smile, she always helps me when I visit this store and she is a hard worker , she kept a sweet composure and positive as the rudeness was poured onto her . This location is not doing the best. Price tags are missing, which is very inconvenient given the generally high mark up compared to getting the same items elsewhere. Online orders for store pickup have been particularly problematic here. The last time I placed an order, I received a notification that my items were ready for pickup -- but when I arrived, they could not even find the items in stock and ended up cancelling most of them. The one item that I did receive, I discovered to have expired moths ago after returning home. Not worth the drive back to deal with a return on a single item. Unfortunately, this was not an isolated incident that has only happened to me once. If coming here for unique food, there are many ethnic and international markets that operate as grocery stores rather than specialty stores, and thus have much lower prices and fresher products. read more

Love this store, they have lots of exotic items! I guess there's a reason the food items are in the back because I always get distracted on my way to get there. I came in for a couple food items but did some browsing around the store and picked up a few other things. When I was ready to check out, there were a couple people in line ahead of me. Suddenly, another cashier came on, one with a bright smiling face. His name is Gilbert! Finally heard back from the manager and my refund for the missing tin was successfully completed. I checked online and it had been posted. World Market has a wide variety of products from all over the world and I do like shopping at all of their locations. However I do find their curbside pick-up services to be a bit careless as this isn't the first time I have had missing items from my order, even when I am given a written receipt, which I was not this time. Usually I can check them in the car and call immediately but when items are out of stock the process of a refund is much more complicated. This is why I am not a regular customer but usually only shop around the holidays for items I can't get anywhere else. read more

Really nice service! I haven't been to a Cost Plus store in a long time. I came here specifically to buy chocolate tea bags. I'm trying to cut back on sugar so I wanted to replace my hot cocoa mix with something healthier lol. The lady working there was really nice and made conversation while I was searching their tea section. I love how the store has home goods, clothing, gifts and food from all around the world. Fun place to go to find unique items. I got the Numi Chocolate Rooibos tea and it honestly wasn't that good lol it tasted like sewer water but I still like this store! ****COVID CURBSIDE PICKUP*** I shop cost plus quiet often... I also buy wine ... b/c of COVID I have over purchased wine (I'm starting to think that is possible)...I'm on quite a few email lists from Napa wineries....and they have been having some pretty amazing deals since COVID/FIRES etc.... I got to the point that I had CASES stacked in my dining room....that's in addition to my small red wine fridge, my garage fridge full of white wine and champagne, and my hall closet with about 4 milk crates full of wine. I needed a tall wine rack in my hall closet. World market had the perfect one and after 20% discount and additional curbside pickup discount (YES seriously they are giving you an extra discount to wait in your car and have them bring you what you ordered!). Got my rack..it fits 48 bottles (doesn't fit champagne/Pinot Noir bottles)...now I only have a hall closet packed with wine ...my dining room floor is (well WAS) clear. Costco has some crazy case discounts and I bought 3 more cases (SMH)... do I get another world market rack? hmm... read more

August 4, 2018 Today is my 60th birthday the big one we are having a humongous Unicorn party. This location has been our favorite ever since we found it yea1qss trs ago. Today we were served by Ms. Gwen sheq was a doll baby one of the nicest people we ever met. Ms. Gwen was very friendly and sweet she was very engaging. We did a lot of shopping they had tons of Unicorn candy, treats & snack for my party tonight. Mini Mac did a lot of Christmas shopping we love giving gifts that are unique and not carbon copies of what everyone else gives. We were very happy with all our goodies we scored. Cost Plus World Market is so much for to peruse and also so many good things to buy here. I signed up a few months ago with their World Market Explorer Rewards Program and receive coupons and offers every now and then which is nice. They have sweet service and plenty of product here. I am a fan of their goods: from sweet to salty foods, plus their beer and alcohol selection. I do their mix and match beer which includes a nice 6-pack bottle case upon check out to hold all my craft beer inside securely. I am a huge fan of Cost Plus! There are so many little cool things I can find here. For example, I stopped by just to "look" around but ended up buying Korean BBQ flavored chips! So cool! The staff here are nice and always are willing to help if you look lost. Parking in this lot kind of sucks but you can manage to find a spot if you try hard enough! I recommend if you are looking for something from another part of the world (especially yummy snacks). If I could pick a place that best resembles my cluttered and wanna-be-like-this-when-I -grow-up aspirations - it would be a cross between World Market, Pier One, Anthropologie and Target. They have everything from decor, furniture, clothing, food, spirits, accessories and FLUFF! I love it....every little bit of this place! From the vintage inspired serving spoons and the stoneware dishes you'd pay double for at the higher end shops (if you didn't flip the plate you'd never know the difference!) to the farmhouse tables, chairs, chaises to the funky footstools and industrial barstools. They have it all! It's literally a little bit of this and a little of that which makes this place a fun shopping excursion. My steals of the day: -a hobo-boho bag purchased for $30.00 is an Anthropologie hack. Set side by side at the latter shop you will not be able to tell the difference! No lie. -prayer shawl $10.00 BOGO Black Friday specials (black Friday sales extended). -farmhouse chic switch plates for $9.99 for a double and $6.99 for a single. -vintage chandelier $149.00 (consider it stolen compared to something comparable from Restoration Hardware. **I had to refrain from purchasing too much more since I'm traveling and I have a very limited weight and space allotments. **As of today, World Market is running a special of free shipping for amounts over $100.00 and 20% off. One of the surviving chain import stores. Large location, but the merchandise seems worn and has seen better days. I usually peruse the food selection. My main issue is that the prices for a lot of the items are missing. I guess this is to entice people to impulse buy. And the management is depending on shoppers to checking the prices while being rung up. It's an insulting model that will only lose customer. On the other hand, maybe prices aren't needed in La Jolla. read more
