What a great experience I had with the UTC location! My designer was Mandy who was wonderful in making suggestions, answering my many questions and helping me to finalize my purchases. I bought 2 bed frames, 2 mattresses, a mattress topper, 2 nightstands and a sofa!! Room & Board offers a service where they'll come to your home ahead of delivery to make sure that everything will fit. So at the point at which we were ready for the delivery it was a breeze. So we were lamp hunting having moved our son into the freshmen dorms at the local university. naturally seeing one of our favorite places to procure furniture we ventured in. Room and Board are purveyors of fine furniture. The vast majority of what they sell is made in the US and are one of those lifetime purchases because of the quality. For us in particular the aesthetic of many of what they sell fit perfectly in our Eichler (Mid-Century modern) home. We were pleased to find a new shelving system there. We have tried for some time to find a Wegener shelving system. However, the ridiculous prices for this iconic bit of mid century modern is beyond out means. However, they now make a modern version. The sales person and I spent a bit talking about Wegener's designs and we went on our way. This is a smaller R&B but the service we have come to expect is the exact same as we have experienced in the San Francisco store. Unobtrusive and helpful is the best description. Visited the UTC store today and the sales associates were rude and unprofessional. My husband and I walked into the store and there were no customers and the 2 gentlemen associates were standing by the from desk chatting. No one welcomes us, offered to assist or asked if we had any questions. We had to stand there and actually ask for help, interrupting their conversation. Answers were curt and dismissive and when we left, no thank you or ask if there was anything else we were interested in. If I was the manager, I would have fired them! We then went to Crate and Barrel where we were welcomed, sales staff on both levels asked if they could help and thanked us for coming in. Which store will we return to? read more

So after owning 4 natural steel beds purchased around 2008. They started rusting on them. I actually contacted the customer service number and they were very courteous. I live by the Carlsbad delivery distribution center to simply ask a question about the proper way to restore or repair. The woman seemed annoyed as she was alone and in an online meeting She said she would attempt to assist in resources to consider my issues. 30 minutes later I received this email. Just following up on your visit to the Distribution center today. Please note that the Distribution center is closed to the public unless you are picking up an order. If you have any questions, we respectfully ask that you call customer service at 1-800-301-9720 or visit our showroom in the La Jolla UTC shopping center which is open to the public. If you need assistance removing the rust from your bed, we recommend contacting a company that specializes in this. There are many listed in San Diego. As the bed is over 20 years old, it is out of warranty and we are unable to send a repair company out to look at it. Completely unacceptable and very impolite. John Gabert and company should be very ashamed. Quality should stand the test of time. Not in my backyard response. NOT cool. Buyer beware. Very bad company read more

I attended a yelp event here a While back. I fell in love with the store! Definitely way beyond my price point, like all the other furniture stores in the mall. I dropped in one day and fell in love with one of the couches. I have been looking for a new couch my old one is 16 years old at this point. Anyways, the couch I was in love with was a floor model that had only been in the store a few months. I got it for half off! I couldn't believe that I could own a couch from this place! Josh was the salesman that was helping me. He was extremely helpful and friendly. Absolutely no pressure sales in fact he was encouraging me to go home and measure the space before I decided. I already knew it would fit so I bought the couch right then and there and couldn't be happier. I took my parents in there a few weeks later and Josh saw me and remembered me and that is a sign of an excellent sales person. Bravo! read more

The first visit we came in and sat on every sofa, and in most chairs in the store, and we weren't approached a single time by any of the iPad bound employees we saw roaming about. There wasn't anyone else in the entire store. The second time I was approached and quickly told that any questions I had (seat height and depth) would probably be better answered on the website. This store looks beautiful till you buy from them. The furniture is very expensive but when it arrives you realize that it's made with lots of savings in mind - particle board sides, front of multiple wood planks that don't match, either as grain look or as color. The worst is that the delivery takes forever. Then you realize that it's junk, want to change. It takes forever to reschedule, and then if something doesn't work on delivery day they can't shift it a few hours later. So arrogant, I hate this company ! read more

Over the years I've purchased many items from Room and Board but this past one was an unnecessarily bad experience. We all know R&B sells decent quality furniture but they just drop the ball at the other end of the business - the customer experience - with bad policies, poor logistics, and indifferent personnel. I was given a delivery window of several hours and received numerous communications I would be notified by the driver just minutes prior to the delivery. On Delivery day I waited. And waited. Nothing. I called R&B Delivery Support (I wonder why that have this number at all). R&B promised to check with the driver and call me back. Nothing. No show, no call back, no delivery. Later, I got a call from them with a torrent of insincere apologies and excuses for the missed delivery. I asked when they can reschedule. Their response, "Well sir, we're very busy and we have other customers to take care of first, so we'll have to reschedule you sometime in the future." Can you give me a day? "No sir." Then, why are you calling me? To tell me what I already know? That you missed the delivery? They told me I would have to go through the entire delivery wait cycle again - to the very back of the line because they missed the delivery. I lived up to my end of the deal by paying and waiting all day and they absolutely do not care about what you think. They offered nothing - not even a new delivery date. Since R&B does not care what I think, perhaps sharing this review with others will be a more appropriate course of action. read more

when we saw that room and board was opening in SD we were excited but at the same time apprehensive. excited cause we no longer have to drive to LA or CM to see if we like a certain piece but apprehensive cause what would they carry in their SD location. we figured based on SD they were going to carry more traditional pieces cause the average consumer will have a hard time accepting mid century or danish design, but what modern/contemporary design really means, whether it's 100 years ago or 100 years from now its contemporary, timeless. another hurdle they may come across are their prices regardless of how well made their furnitures are. most consumers will just say that they can go to jeromes or ashleys for something similar, but there's a difference that you'll see and feel between r&b and jeromes. what would've been nice along with their traditional pieces, they should also have an entire isle of their mid century furniture to show consumers their range as opposed to a section in the showroom or a catalog. their culver city location is the epitome of a room and board showroom, and the original location in costa mesa with the two floors was very similar until their recent move. i guess room and board like any business has to be flexible, because we had a design within reach in downtown SD that closed down years ago. only reason we could think of, more and more people are accepting of modern contemporary design in SD, but they don't necessarily live it inside their home, and if they do they're not willing to spend DWR pricing. we hope that doesn't happen with room and board and they stay around for a very long time cause we've been big fans for over 13 years. utc room and board just needs better choices in their showroom to show san diegans who they really are. read more

I love that most everything is made in the USA. I bought a bedroom set in walnut that is beautiful and the workmanship is outstanding. They have nice furniture but when you examine some of the mechanism up close, you can see that they skimp out. For example the glider ottoman's glider is super low quality and you can tell based on how well it glides. Go to a comparable product from crate and barrel and you can see it's much better. Also, no soft close glides with dresser prices that high? What a joke. Their drawer glides are pretty much the same vinyl glides you get on Ikea drawers. Went in looking to buy a table cash in hand. 6-7 sales associates standing there speaking with each other but not a single person approached me. Second time in one week this has happened, but as soon as a women with a Gucci handbag walks in every single associate is hounding them down, offering them waters. Ridiculous, just because I'm dressed down Mexican and under 25 and not looking "super rich" I'm not even checked on. Racial profiling if you ask me, so save your money and literally shop anywhere else. Even target cause you'll get treated better there. I posted a negative review here not long ago because when I went into the store, no one offered to help me. After my review, a sales associate reached out to me and the manager offered to call, so amends were made. Now I'm finally settled in San Diego (after having all my stuff in storage for two years) and am once again living with my gorgeous Room & Board bookcases (purchased through the San Francisco store.) My movers, my brother, and a new neighbor all said, "where did you get these?!" the minute they saw them. I have a lot of heavy books, and the construction and quality couldn't be better: no danger of sagging shelves. Another thing to love: I had them made-to-order, so was able to get the sizes exactly right, and the shelves are adjustable and you can get as many shelves as you need. They look like built-ins at a fraction of the price -- I highly recommend them. read more

Beautiful store with gorgeous furniture. Walked in with my husband to find a bed on a Monday. Someone yelled hi to us (had no idea where they were). We walked through the entire store, were the only customers in there, passed by 5 employees who all buried their heads in their tablets and catalogs as we walked past them. No greeting, nothing. We walked out and went to another store to purchase our bed. Customer service is really important and the employees gave this store a really cold and unwelcoming vibe. read more

I have had a few problems with some of the furniture pieces I have bought, I have purchased many pieces of furniture and rugs, and to no prevail they have taken care of the problems instantly and are so nice and here for you to make you happy and satisfied. My wife and I absolutely love Room & Board brand. The UTC store has the most beautifully designed and well made American furniture. Its the kind of timeless furniture that we thought was no longer made - warm, tasteful... something that touches your soul. It does not smell of formaldehyde or other industrial chemicals (we threw away rooms full of imported furniture that smelled months after months after purchase), I'd say it has a smell of a authentic wood workshop... Every item we bought from this store is a joy to look at and is nice to the touch... This store would not be the same without the most wounderful, patient and knowledgeable sales people. We were helped by many sales associates, but especially Heather and Josh, who were absolutely instrumental in helping us with the selections, changes, custom orders, deliveries etc etc etc. World class salesmanship and customer care. I bought a condo and I am pretty broke, so Room and Board is not the store I should be checking out. HOwever, my first mortgage payment starts in February so before I get caught up in the payment programme and be eternally broke, I thought I could use the lat few hundred dollars I still have left on some cheap floor samples or art work. Since their floor sample deals are not online, I wanted to drive up here to check them out this Sunday. IT was one of the hottest day. Westfield mall is always so pleasant. I met my friend after race here few months back, so I like walking around here. Room and Board here is spacious and beautiful, they had lot of pieces that I dont see in OC. I didnt particularly see any floor samples, that I could afford, so I did take my brokeself back to OC but the cravery cookies they had at the store made my whole trip so worth it! They were delicious and the people at the store were super nice! I will be back, if once I get my savings up! read more

We absolutely love the quality of the furniture for the price point. The prices are similar to Crate & Barrel but the quality is superior. We have purchased several bedroom sets, couches, tables and chairs over the past 10 years plus. The quality remains the same from the first purchase and the furniture holds up beautifully. But what even stands out more is the customer service. We purchased a dresser that was delivered with slightly damaged drawer guides. Given busy schedules, we didn't report it until two years later. I assumed since I waited, I would just need to purchase two new sets of drawer guides to install myself. Much to my surprise, Room and Board arranged to have the new hardware installed at no additional cost to me. I will continue my tradition of shopping at such a great place both for the quality of their product and the amazing people that stand behind it.
