This is a really interesting location. There is a courtyard between two different sides with different food options on both sides. The courtyard is kind of nice as it's open and lets you hear the roar of the jets ever few minutes. Thankfully, there are signs that point out what items are on each side. It was a clean store and pretty packed with stuff. I figured out where the deli was and that got me what I needed. I found a few sandwiches already made which worked as this was a stop on the way to the airport. I had to cross the courtyard again (in the rain) and go find the checkout. I used self serve, so I can't really comment on much regarding that (it worked as they all do). For a Von's, it's fine. Prices tend to be a little higher than I like, but I still bought food, so that's on me. LOL. If you need a grocery store in the Liberty Station area, this place works just fine! read more

Rella at the deli, this one is for you. I was waiting behind a long line of young students getting their lunches. When I came to my turn the worker behind the counter just left me waiting. Rella saw me standing there for a few minutes, even though she was working behind the warm food counter, she asked if I had been helped and threw on a pair of gloves to assist me. She was polite and helped answer my questions about the sandwich. It's rare to find employees like this especially in today's work environments. I experience age discrimination with my child because there were many issues of shoplifting not involved in my kid. I find it sad that when I contacted corporate I spoke to Mr. Hopkins and he said he will return my call after I made a complaint so from January 2024 to December 2024. I've waited for an update. I've had many issues with the store and it seems that they can't get their act together. So on January 9, 2024 my son was allowed to enter with his backpack because he was there with me. While in the store, my son was told to leave because of his backpack, I suddenly responded with he's with his parent and he's fine. And still, we were asked to leave. I find this distasteful that Vons would post something to show age of discrimination to the public. So anybody under the age of 18 cannot have a backpack or any carrying device to enter the store. This was the most organized and beautiful store I have ever been to. It's huge and packed with groceries, super clean. As I entered the store one of the managers was at the front door and greeting customers as they entered the store. Liz, the clerk in the Deli is the worst. She saw that I was waiting for help, but didn't care. She left me standing there for several minutes while preparing HER lunch all a while ignoring me then just plain walked off for her break, she didn't utter a single word. She didn't offer to get anyone to help me, no one was working the counter..... I guess she was in a hurry, maybe her food was getting cold, who knows. This is a really nice Vons located close enough to Shelter and Harbor Islands for boaters needing to provision. There is a huge parking lot for the many stores located in Liberty Station as well as some parking next to the stores for a quick run or for loading/unloading. The store arrangement is, like other Yelpers have said, "unusual". The meat, cheese, deli sections are to the left as you enter the central courtyard with a quick checkout. The center courtyard has shopping carts, plants and larger items and to the right, is the regular aisles, frozen food, pharmacy and main checkout areas. This Vons is where I stop for regular groceries. In the same shopping center, just down a bit, is a Trader Joe's where I can fill in with any specialty items that I might need. While it may not be the store that has everything, it is easy and convenient and stocked with most things you need. read more

This is a review for the bakery. I recently ordered a custom cake and had great results, thanks to Maria the cake decorator and artist! They need at least 24 hours notice for a custom cake, so Vons is a good option if you want a special cake last minute (most independent bakeries need at least a week). The cake decorators only work in the early morning, so if you want to customize something totally unique and unlike any of the pre-made designs on display, your best bet is to speak directly to them by calling before 9AM. I spoke to Maria directly and told her the colors I wanted, the theme (I wanted an ocean/wave motif), the sizing, filling, etc. Then, I left it up to her to be creative with the design. She ended up doing a great job and even added red and orange hibiscus style flowers on top, so that it looked like an ocean theme plus with Hawaiian flowers. The price was very affordable as I paid around $35 for a quarter sheet vanilla cake with strawberry filling and customized design. read more

This is the coolest Vons there is. It's located in what used to be a Navy barracks/command type building. The whole area used to be a Navy base but was closed with the land and buildings being turned over to the community. The buildings are in excellent shape. Chalk that up to excellent military construction of years past. As others have mentioned, the store is separated into two sides by an open air section. If you walked into one of the two sides without realizing the other existed, you would think this Vons is really limited. Fact is, they cover everything you need. It's true the fresh produce side has a much better layout and feel to it. The isles tend to be narrower that other locations but its not a bad thing. The place is always neat and well stocked. I am using Vons as the "control group" for my current stint of SD's Best Carrot Cake Contenders" review series. I have chosen 5 venues known well for their Carrot Cake offering. This review is #3 of 5. See my other recent reviews for the other 2 and then next 2. The only way to know how good or bad something is, is to have a reference point of which to compare to. Vons being the one store bought version of carrot cake and the one I have had 5-times in the past made for a defacto control group for the other 4 venues that are specialty venues known only for cake type items. Vons bakery sets the bar high for anyone putting out a carrot cake let me say this. As the picture shows this slice of awesome looks epic.....it is! 3 layers of moist cake with 3 layers of creamy cream cheese frosting specked with plumb raisins chopped walnuts and coconut shavings. The size alone makes it worth a double take and maybe even a long stare and drool..... Not having had Vons CC (carrot cake) since before deployment began in May 2015 I was uber excited to reunite with this sinful sweetness! As expected it was super moist, hit of pineapple, pungent spice blend, lots of plumb raisins, dab of chopped walnuts and a cream cheese frosting that packed the sweet/tart/sour combo I look for in my CC! Coming in at just $4.56 a slice with tax this sucker is so far the best bargain priced carrot cake I have found and thus the main reason I come back to Vons again and again for this indulgent spurge of cake goodness. Price, consistency and quality. No matter what Vons I hit up I can be sure to find one of these 14 oz (as listed on container) triple decker wonders for under $5 and know its gonna be good. TL;DR: + Nice store, good deals - Layout very confusing, parking possibly a challenge Preface: Came on a Sunday afternoon and apparently there was some sort of special event going on in the plaza nextdoor - so parking was expected to be nutso (I got a spot up front). As others have commented, the layout is a bit..different? It was like being in a department store of groceries. Menswear...to the left. Shoes...to the right. Cosmetics...in the back. Wait? Nvm. Ah, grocery store, right.. Ok so it was bakery/meats/produce/deli...left. Main stuffs/packaged goods...right. There were other sections, but I was a bit perplexed by the layout so after a short perusal and grabbing what I came for (and maybe a few other things), I checked out. A bit tough to find the checkout for a first timer (hint: it's to the right side of the store when walking into the main/packaged stuff section). It is a bit troublesome to have to zig-zag between sections like a mice trying to find the cheese - which is in the left section - when you realized you missed an item, or that item you THOUGHT was somewhere...but actually wasn't. Example: Gluten-free soy sauce was not with sauces and dressings as I am used to, but instead there is a separate "Asian" section in an aisle that had it...but I wouldn't have found that aisle had I not been wandering to check the layout. For all the confusion, I liked the feel, aesthetically. It didn't feel stuffy like a regular supermarket. But I don't like to spend all day shopping so I would prefer the former be improved. The well-stocked shelves were filled with bargains and deals - some available if you sign up for their card; which is easy as just asking at the checkout. Staff were very friendly. Gluten-free availability was average. I did not find many GF products that I couldn't find elsewhere, and found less than usual. No bread products other than the Udi's/Rudi's, and most, if not all products frozen. Would still go back if I'm in the area, but not making a special trip to this place, especially since TJ's is right down the plaza. My shopping experience here was a mixed bag & I'd say it was just A-OK overall. The 1st & most noticeable thing about this store is the layout. Entrance is through a central courtyard, with some items in there on display/ for sale, & then the store is divided in 2 to the left & right of the courtyard. Different. Aesthetically, I actually liked it. It gave the store a tiny bit of a farmer's market feel. In terms of practicality, however, it made it harder to find things as it wasn't clear which 1/2 of store had which sections. A large store layout map in the courtyard would be helpful. Throughout, this Vons is well stocked & well kept. Eventually I found what I was looking for. Going to check out, there were long lines. It wasn't busy. But with only a couple open registers, the few of us checking out were in for a wait. For a quick shopping stop, this Vons wasn't great but wasn't horrible either. It has a unique layout that I really did like. Add some store maps & open a few more registers, & I'd be a fan of this place. As it is, it's OK for grabbing a few things when in the area. read more
