While I regularly frequent Safeway and Albertsons in Arizona, every now and then, I visit San Diego, and I find that Vons is where I would swing by for various items while also still taking part in Safeway/Albertsons promotions. I have been to this Vons location several times and typically to just pick up a few groceries for a weekend or a random visit to pick up a specific item. I recall visiting this store when Safeway/Albertsons/Vons had their annual Monopoly game way back when and then the Flavor Adventure through the app a few years ago, too. While I haven't taken advantage of the curbside pick-up at this location, I know it is offered here. I do have a membership for FreshPass (which I got last year at the 50% off promotion). There are great sales from the weekly doorbuster sales to daily promotions to Friday or weekend promotions to general sales prices. For approximately $99 per year (or the occasional $49 promotional price), you can sign up for FreshPass, which includes unlimited free delivery on orders over $30, $5 monthly credit for annual subscribers, earn 2X points on our exclusive brands, save 5% on O Organics, Open Nature, or Signature Pet Care, points don't expire, a VIP phone line, and monthly exclusive Starbucks perks. While I haven't shopped at this store often enough to see trends for better or worse, I have enjoyed the few visits to this location. Pretty decent location. It feels quite larger than the majority of Vons I've been to. The employees could be a bit more nicer but it's not the biggest deal breaker in the world. Plenty of parking. It's pretty deep. It's in a plaza with other businesses. The store is pretty tidy towards the front and back of it. But when I got to the aisles near the back right and all the way to the right it felt very messy. I honestly just skipped those last three aisles because of it. Looks like they were mid restocking and then just stopped. The dairy section runs alongside the meats in the back. There's a florist that's sizeable as well. Great variety of selection in their clearance dept and their produce / bakery section had everything I could possibly want and more. Super happy with that area of the store. read more

I walked in, saw the line and walked out. I don't even know why I waste my time coming to this location. The line (typically singular because they only have one lane open) is always insanely long and they are insanely slow. I will definitely be going across the highway to Ralph's from now on. Short staffed, absolute shit show. 10:30am, the line (at only register open besides self check) is going down the shopping aisle. I check out with Vons Club card, discounts don't go through. Do not ever order a cake from this Vons. The manager Tristan and Jesus in the bakery are the most unprofessional terrible people I have interacted with. No customer service skills. Jesus answered my call with a simple inquiry of how long he would be there to order a cake in person with the worst attitude. He was talking over me cutting me off and claiming they would never make a cake based off a picture brought in and quoting me prices without even understanding what I asking for. He kept me on hold for 10 minutes while getting a manager and repeatedly laughed at me and was extremely aggressive and disrespectful. When the manager got off on the phone she was no help either did not care that her staff was rude and unkind to customers and "refused service" due to he said she said and claims from Jesus that I had cussed at him which I did not. Shameful and disgusting. Will never return and will make sure to tell everyone I know to never shop at this location. read more

Trash bin of a Vons. Had the misfortune of being nearby two day in a row and both days had my eye drawn to a sale item with a bright yellow tag. Two days in a row the cashier was unable to register the sale price. Both times I asked wtf & employee went on marathon trip to find the item & returned to say the bright yellow sale stickers were expired and should have been removed. Ooookay, maybe get your act together. Meanwhile the line (only one, of course) got longer and longer. I've also been there when a stock person was angrily cursing thru his vegetable/fruit duties. Today 4/22/2026 around 5:15 pm I was trying to buy a couple of items and was accused of stealing when I absolutely did not- and they made a huge public stink about it trying to embarrass me and I was just trying to buy something and did nothing wrong. The older Asian woman cashier said she saw me put a bottle in my bag and the 30-40 ish year old looking dude in the front with shoulder length black hair was backing her up, AND they tried convincing me I didn't have enough money to pay for my groceries when I absolutely did- obviously they have a horrible stereotyping problem which is funny because I guaranteed have more money than all of them combined- idk why maybe because I'm not dressed up like a La Jolla soccer mom or because I have tattoos or something but they are totally pathetic and I hope they're reprimanded and taught how to treat people because that was so lame and messed up.. Would've given a 5 star review because they have an awesome selection here but their employees are totally stupid and have awful service just follow you around the store calling for security meanwhile someone else is probably getting away with a ton of merchandise because they're so busy trying to harass paying customers. screw this place and everyone in it read more

5 STARS - Not Just a Grocery Store... A Whole Experience Let me start by saying this Vons location is pretty great on its own. The layout is intuitive, the shelves are well-stocked, and the produce section always smells faintly like a Pinterest board. The bakery? Dangerous in the best way. And the self-checkout lanes don't randomly malfunction every other scan like they do at some other grocery stores (cough we see you, Ralphs). BUT... let's talk about the real star of the show: the security guard we've lovingly nicknamed "Spawn." Yes. Spawn. Why Spawn? Because he literally materializes out of nowhere when things get sketchy. One moment you're casually trying to decide between oat milk and almond milk, the next--bam!--he's there, arms crossed, eyes scanning the horizon like he's guarding the gates of Valhalla. The man doesn't walk. He glides. He patrols the entrance like it's the front lines of a Marvel movie and somehow makes a security vest look tactical. He's got a vibe that screams "I once led a tactical unit in the Andes and now I protect this dairy aisle out of sheer will." If anything ever went down in that store--someone stealing rotisserie chickens, a rogue toddler with a juice box--there's no doubt Spawn would handle it before the incident even finished unfolding. He's that kind of presence. But here's the thing. There used to be something... more. You see, Spawn once had a glorious mustache. A masterpiece of facial hair. It was a thick, rugged upper-lip crown that gave him an aura of seasoned authority. You looked at that mustache and thought: This man has survived car chases, evaded assassins, and probably knows the original recipe for Coca-Cola. It wasn't just facial hair--it was a statement. And now... it's gone. Shaved. Vanished. As if it never existed. We mourn it every time we walk past the frozen pizza section. Spawn, if you're reading this (and I really hope you are): grow it back. Please. For the store. For the people. For justice. Your mustache gave you mystique, charisma, and the faintest whiff of 1980s detective-show energy. Without it, you're still intimidating--don't get me wrong--but now you're more "guy who trains Krav Maga in the evenings" than "legend whose tales are whispered in back alleys." Bring it back and restore balance to the aisles. Anyway, back to the store: the deli counter is top-tier, the staff is always friendly (shoutout to the guy in aisle 7 who helped me find bougie crackers), and they even play decent music--not too loud, not too old-school. It's like the Vons equivalent of lo-fi beats to grocery shop to. In short: come for the groceries, stay for the security guard. And maybe, just maybe, if the winds are right and the stars align, you'll catch a glimpse of Spawn in his full mustachioed glory one day again. Fried chicken had a crunchy batter and was nice and juicy inside.  I liked the flavor of the batter which was salty with a good amount of pepper.  The oil they fry in was fresh and of good quality as there was no aftertaste.  In the past I've stayed away from supermarket fried chicken but Vons has a good product now.  I prefer the flavor of Stater Bros fried chicken but Vons is in second place. I showed up at 11am and the chicken was fresh out of the fryer.  Regular price is $7.99 but they often have sales where the price goes down to $4.99 which is a great deal.  Getting that deal is a bit tricky.  You have to register for the Vons rewards program Just 4 U.  Then you have to either download the app or go to vons.com and add the digital coupon which is hidden under the deli tab.  Then you have to enter your phone number at the register to get the deal price.   I also tried the fried chicken at Ralphs but I didn't like it that much.  I would return for Vons fried chicken if it was on sale and I was free around 11am. The punk who walks around like his you-know-what doesn't stink would be Jose and you'll recognize the diminutive 5'5" punk by his white-taped-hand and snark. His manager will tell you "He had surgery". But that was months ago and the white tape around his balled-up fist probably comes off when shift is over. LOL Dude, you're working as a courtesy clerk at Vons! You make anywhere from $7-$12 an hour! HAHAHA HAHAHA!!! Making $20k at a grocery store? Here's an idea: Maybe if you go to the local university like your peers that you're so jealous of, you too could get a higher-paying job, no? Dude, leave your attitude at the door when you enter your workplace! The other one who needs an attitude adjustment is Jose's manager. He should be fired for insubordination. That would be manager Carlos. Maybe I have the clerk's name wrong ...Jose (maybe Juan) ...ehhhh... Nevertheless ... I recently tried to return 2 spoiled packages of chicken with the Vons labels still on. One was opened because I had intentions of cooking it. I could tell it was spoiled as soon as I opened the package. The chicken went in the disposer, so the packaging went into a ziplock freezer bag and in the freezer for return. The other package, bought at the same time, was already frozen. I wasn't taking a chance on even opening the second one. The receipt was long gone. Long story short ...Juan REFUSED to return the meat. He said I bought them too long ago. When I told him I froze them, he actually tapped on the packages to verify this ... not a rocket scientist ... a complete tool. I have shopped at Von's stores for many years and have never had a problem returning anything, regardless of the reason. So I asked for the manager because we're talking about SPOILED chicken. I waited for the manager 25 minutes! In comes manager Carlos. I explain all over again that the meat is spoiled and he has no problem returning and gives me a cash refund, apologizing profusely for his employee's behavior. I made the mistake of placing another mobile order here. Again, they gave me an expired meat product (today is 9/27, they gave me an OPENED container of chicken livers with a use by date of 9/23). Two items which are very common were out of stock, and no substitutions available (Parmesan cheese and shredded mozzarella), really? I don't believe that. To that point, their app shows items in stock that they don't even carry in the store. I've become so frustrated with them that I only shop at Ralph's nearby. I will start by saying that I regularly shop at another Vons by my house (92117). It's great. I stopped at the Regents Road (92122) store for convenience and it was absolutely horrible. Security guard posted as I entered (maybe they are at all but I don't notice them). Could not find a juice section or anyone to help me find it. Had to have someone unlock a liquor cabinet where they had a buzzer that didn't call anyone (waited 5-10 minutes). Eventually asked not 1, but 4 people before getting someone to open it after she located the key which clearly wasn't where it belonged. Lastly the store seemed kind of gross in parts and there didn't seem to be a very logical layout. Checking out - 2 long lines had been consolidated into one extra long line. Security guard decided he needed to grab the 2 handheld baskets when we were all packed in...no excuse me. Checker had a mask half on, let the person in front of me leave her cart in the check out line (before I said something to that person instead of the checker), and I'm not sure she said hello, thanks, or goodbye while checking me out. After checking out the security guard, self checkout person, and another employee were all standing in my way to exit chatting it up. I had to say excuse me to get by, which is fine, but they were clearly in the middle of a busy walkway not paying attention. I'm so happy this isn't my home grocery store. read more

7.5 stars Have you ever found a Vons with Prime grade ribeye steaks? I haven't, and when I asked the butcher at this location why they don't sell Prime, I was told that it's due to a lack of demand. That lack of demand, however, couldn't be regional: In less than a mile away, competitor Ralphs sells Prime. In fact, every Ralphs I've been to has always sold Prime--and every Vons I've been to never sold Prime. The lack of demand for Prime may explain how Vons competes against Ralphs: Vons caters to a more price-conscientious clientele, hence the seeming greater abundance of coupons and the less maintained and modernization of the interiors. This difference in strategy, however, may be regional. There are other inventory differences: Both carry zero-calorie Powerade, but only Ralphs carry my favorite flavor, citrus peach. Vons, however, carries my favorite diet soda, Hansen's Diet Black Cherry, whereas Ralphs does not. Skylark frozen beef liver is also about 50% cheaper at Vons. But for the most part, inventory selection and pricing are roughly the same. I don't shop by coupons because I only buy what I need (but when that item has a coupon or is on sale, I buy in bulk) so Vons having more coupons is irrelevant to me. In fact, shopping by coupons can backfire as you can end up spending more money on things you wouldn't have bought. For bargain hunting to actually save money requires time and planning, and that extra effort may not be worth it. My point is that everyone has different needs and circumstances--what works for me may not for you, and I bet Vons and Ralphs cater to these different needs, hence the aforementioned inventory differences. But an important difference that is relevant to a broader demographic is how Vons responded to the COVID-19 pandemic: Unlike Ralphs, I've never found a Vons that offered free hand sanitizer at the entrance, and for months, they were also absent at checkouts. My guess is that Vons's business model of catering to a more price-conscientious clientele requires lower expenses, hence the less maintained and modernized interiors--and perhaps abstaining from additional expenses like hand sanitizers. Regardless, I rate businesses not on a curve but rather whether my time and resources (e.g. my dollar) are worth what they offer (this is the basis of trade). Whether Vons is the best grocery store chain in San Diego, by whatever standard, it still provides incredible value: Walk into any location and you're immediately surrounded by an astounding variety of goods from around the world to meet your most basic or most luxurious needs. Don't lose perspective--even the necessity of grocery stores have become a zombie film trope for good reason. read more

Bottom Line: much like your local Krogers or Safeways. This location has a bakery, fresh vegetables, meats, milk, juices, frozen items, and liquor. Its conveniently located in the La Jolla village area and other residential units. The customer service was great. Other then that, nothing really special but convenient for sure! I did not have a good experience with Darlene, she musta been in a bad moodl The meat guy said there were more corned beefs in the front of the store, but he did not know there were no more point cuts in that area. The store ran out of the sale POINT CUT corned beefs. Only the POINT cut is on sale for $1.77 lb. They had a lot of Flat cuts a lot more expensive as usual. Darlene did bring me to the bin in the front of the store when I told her the meat guy said there were some at the front of the store. When I told her that there were only Flat cuts in there, she says "I know what I am doing", like I was accusing her. The meat guy gave me the last 2 point cuts which he got from the back storage, but they did not ring up the sale price even though I did the Just for U thing online. At the cash register Darlene was trying to calculate the $1.77 x # of lbs on each corned beef. She was charging me for 3.7 lbs when the package said 3.07 lbs. I tried to bring that to her attention, but she kept saying "I know what I am doing!!!!" But she didn't, cos the price was for 3.7 lbs, not 3.07. And she kept throwing the corned beef around, like she was mad and having a temper tantrum with them, instead of just turning them around to read the weight that was pasted on it, saying "I know what I am doing, OK?" She did redo the 3.7 calculation (she used a calculator) at 3.07. I couldn't make sense of my receipt, but the total on the receipt including $2.98 for the Cuties, wasn't too expensive (seemed to be the $1.77 sale price, cos I got at least 6 lbs, so I just let it go. But that experience and her seeming "seething" throwing the corned beef like mad people would throw a plate down to break it, kept lingering in my mind. OK- I shop at this Von's on a weekly basis. So I can tell you that the peak times for shopping is between 4:30pm to 6:30pm. NOTE TO MANAGEMENT: you need to be running all your lanes at this time - not just two!! Every time I come in here during those times - the manager is walking around, twirling his keys at the end of shoe string like Boss Hogg, and watching his employees get stressed by the irate customers. The lines are so bad in the front that it is impossible to get through the front of the store - because people waiting to check out are blocking the lanes (See Pict). And this happens ALL the time. Wow... a lot of hate, but I like this Vons. Actually, no. I don't like this Vons, I LOVE it. My purchases here are actually quite random. I have become a wannabe health fru-fru (2018, New Years Resolution. Let's see how long this lasts. lol), so most of my "real" food comes from either Trader Joe's or Whole Foods. If I do buy "food" here, it is usually something processed, full of sugar/carbs/cholesterol/GMO, unhealthy goodness... you get the gist. I am actually quite obsessed with their clearance area -- it is in the far middle back of the store, right in front of the the bathroom. The frozen clearance area is along the first row of freezers, and also towards the back. Items are usually between 50-75% off. Their clearance selection has actually changed my life. lol. I have bought things I would never imagine buying if it weren't so discounted. I have purchased a box of Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwiches which were originally $10.99, but I got it for $5.49, bag of Butterfingers for $0.70, Halo Ice Cream for $2.50, 12-inch Christmas Tree Bell which I think it cost around $30, but came down to $3.99, baby diapers (for a diaper cake, I forgot the cost, but it was 50% off) and random over the counter medications. It's great! lol. I do get a little embarrassed at the register because my entire basket tends to be only clearance items. If you do purchase things from the clearance area, it may be easier to go to the actual checkout stand verses self checkout. The discounted price may not be reflected at the self checkout. I don't enjoy flagging down a employee to adjust the price because they basically cancel the entire transaction and rescan everything. I guess you have to scan the original barcode, then the discounted barcode... I don't know, but I don't want to necessarily expose my frugalness. Plus, the checkout stands are just easier, and faster for these type of purchases. Just make sure that the cashier actually applies the discount otherwise you are just wasting your time. For some reason, Bobby is usually my cashier. He seems nice, and if there is a better bargain, he will always let you know. No offense, but I am hoping not to start one of those barista-type-customer bonds with him. I have a feeling I will, and if that happens he will notice my purchases. An asian auntie cashier at Target pointed out my purchases once, and I was so embarrassed. I shouldn't feel that way, but I do. I betcha she probably does the same thing, and on top of her Target discount, shoot. lol. jk. Also, don't forgot to use your Vons card! I shop at this Vons at least once a week because it is within walking distance for me. Today, August 19, 2020 between 2:30 pm and 3:30 pm I was followed by the "undercover" loss prevention officer. It pretty obvious when the only other black person in the entire store is following you. I come here with my 20 month old baby and my wife and I am usually treated warmly. This was disgusting. I talked to another black customer and asked him if he noticed a random black dude behind him while he was shopping. He said he thought he was crazy at first, but he did notice him. I understand that you have to protect your store. I know this particular agent from when I worked with him at Tier 1. He just follows any black person or teenager that dresses like a skater. I have been a regular customer of Vons since 2018 and I noticed that two employees, one who is named Carlos, would stare at me in a creepy way. It made me feel uncomfortable and made me hesitate every time I would need to go to the store. The reason why I decided to finally speak up about the poor customer service in this store is because on Thursday, August 26th at approximately 7 pm my service dog and I were ruthlessly kicked out of Vons by an employee. I have brought my service dog to the store multiple times over the last 6 months and he has always behaved in a proper manner; no barking, biting, or destroying anything. He is a calm dog. The employee abruptly kicked me out of the store in front of everyone and did not let me pay for the items I was going to buy. read more

I've been going to this store 2-5 x a week for two years until today. I usually use the self check-out and was almost done buying my 7 items when some lady in an orange vest barged over to my check-out and swiped her card. She said something wasnt working right. I could see that she was just checking my items to see what I had paid for. I normally go to this location and it's always clean. Usually crowded after people get off work and school during peak times on weekdays. Things here are always easy to find and the staff are fairly helpful when it comes to service. It would just be nice for them to lower the prices slightly on a few things. When I called this location with a question they took the time to search for the product and told me which isle I could find it. Matt is always really awesome. I like the other employees as well but Matt is my favorite because he's always smiling and always a helpful. He has helped me in the past without me needing to ask. I really appreciate that. The only negative is the check out lines. Unless you go during random hours... prep yourself to stand in a line with 3-5 people in front of u. The other day I was doing some shopping for an event. I was looking for the garlic bread but couldn't find any. I asked a staff member at the deli and she didn't seem to think they had any. I am surprised that anybody would write a bad review about Darlene, the very sharp cashier at the Von's Regents store. I have shopped there once a week for the past 15 years. Just this evening I had what I thought was a complicated grocery payment scenario involving a stimulus EIT card and a Smart Card. Darlene handled the payments smooth as butter, and I was on my way. I have always found Darlene to be fast, accurate, bright and cheery, and very courteous. She goes out of her way to help me and others all the time. One time I told the cashier I had three bags of ice, but when I got to my car, I realized I had only two bags of ice in my shopping cart. I just started to go back into the store to retrieve the missing bag, when I ran into Darlene in the parking lot. She was a bagger girl at the time. It was late in the evening, her shift was over, and she was on her way home. She asked if she could be of assistance. I told her the situation, and she suggested I continue loading my trunk with groceries, and that she would go get the ice for me. She did. Talk about customer service. It's no wonder she went from bagger to cashier in such a short time. I make sure to go through Darlene's line even if it involves a lot of extra waiting.
