The self-checkout machines are CRAP! I try to avoid them as much as possible but sometimes there's LONG lines so I cross my fingers and hope for the best but every time some stupid thing triggers it to stop you from checking out and you have to wait for a cashier to have a minute because most of the time there's nobody attending the self checkout so you end up waiting even longer than getting in the long, slow lines. Only reason I don't give it just 1 start is because it's usually clean and the cashiers are very friendly (not their fault they're usually under-staffed). read more

I had to make a pit stop here since I was at a local bank taking care of business matters. This visit was the first time I actually spent some time and perused the aisles for groceries. The aisles are tiny and you have to maneuver your way thru the product stands and other customers. I specifically came in for some veggies for a potluck dish I was making and a birthday cake. Vons does not carry red velvet cake. I have to admit the employee who was working there was very personable and tried to assist me. Unfortunately, I deferred when she suggested that I go to the baking aisle and make my own red velvet cake... Uhhh NO.... Vons also does not carry the Snickers Marathon bars. Ya, I know pretty random, but I was craving them for some odd reason. The checkers are friendly and made pleasant conversation. The guy who bagged my groceries asked whether I needed carry out service. Great offer, but I was capable in handling my own take out service - thank you very much. Perhaps Vons read my review. The older Asian checkout female with poor English skills is always slow, chatting with customer, very long line; several checkout personnel there are notorious for overly being social. I called the pharmacy, if you hit zero in the menus no one ever picks up; if you hit 5 a gal barks 'Pharmacy Hold' .. Then, Each time the on hold music ends a cycle it rings but she just picks up and hangs you up back in to hold music for over 11mins, unacceptable! I'm giving 2 stars since it's walking distance from my place and I never had a problem until recently. Thanks for my raw in the center fried chicken, Vons! I understand that there is a rush on Fridays due to the awesome $5 Friday deals but that's no excuse for your employee complaining about how busy it is then handing out improperly cooked meals to loyal customers. The worst part was how management handled the situation. I'm not sure if they aren't allowed to apologize to customers but they didn't even act a bit surprised when I told them what happened. This Vons is well stocked and very clean. It's nicely laid out so you can find everything you need. The produce is good quality and lasts. Flowers are pretty good too. Unusually, for being in a student area, they don't carry many small sizes, mostly large family sizes. The pharmacy area is small, but still stocked with the basics. The wine and beer area is big, as you might expect for the area. I love their buy 2, get 3 free fridge packs of soda deals. Definitely get a club card, and you save a bunch. The problem at this Vons is that if the students are in town the lines after 6:00 PM can be half way to the back of the store. Even if you do the express lanes it still takes 15-20 minutes to check out. It happens year after year and they don't seem to understand to put on extra cashiers. One night they had a trainee on her first day on the registers at 6:00 - felt sorry for her because everyone in line was really mean after they waited 1/2 hr to check out. I am so very relieved that THIS Vons is close to my 97-year-old super healthy but now blind and almost deaf father. I was just there for two weeks caring for him. The pharmacy staff ESP the tall female pharmacist long black hair on saturdays, was outstanding!! Dad had constant intense level 10 eye pain. Doc forgot the steroid pain relief in stack of prescriptions. I called the on call doc. No response hours later so the VONS pharmacist volunteered and called and SECURED the prescription that Saturday night! Incredible! Stock / freshness of vegetables fruit is very good -- 4stars. Staff are all warm very helpful friendly. The gentleman at the prep hot foods was ESP funny and personable -- great for seniors! Prices MUCH better than Ralph's . Wow, I still frequent this store often, but man, the customer service is really lacking. I couldn't believe the last time I went there; the cashier (Rose) literally threw my groceries into my bag. There are a few a pleasant workers, but many of the staff members are pretty awful -- their intense level of distain for their jobs fills the immediate area and oozes from their pores. It's hard to have a decent experience when so many of the workers look like they hate their lives. Many people need jobs -- consider hiring some new staff members. Lines are often long and slow. The self-checkout stands are often broken or you will still need assistance from an employee. This market is generally over-priced compared to other markets in SD. It's based on location -- they know they can ripoff students who live in the area and don't have personal transport. Always inspect your food closely before leaving the store. I've purchased more than one rotten or moldy thing (e.g., shrimp, cheese) from here. The last time, they didn't even apologize; they just told my fiancé to get a new one. This market is so convenient that I don't see us stopping our shopping here entirely, but we are going to try to make an effort to shop at Sprouts and Costco more often. His appearance is usually disheveled as if he goes on benders every night after work and returns to work hungover. Having grown up in Texas (where people are super friendly) and lived in Boston for the last 4 years (where people are insanely cold), I have come to truly appreciate the wonders of warm, genuine, helpful service. The staff at this particular Vons, above every other store or location, is amazingly helpful. I had once went in to find a hard to find hot sauce, and they patiently searched to locate it for me after I had completely given up hope of ever finding it. The people make me feel welcome, and if you shop the sales items, the prices are quite competitive. I'm a penny pincher, but I'm happy to pay a couple of more dollars for the amazing service. Went here the other morning. Starbucks employees were more interested in speaking with fellow employees than actually working. When I asked if they were open, total attitude was given and still didn't take my order. A couple more minutes go by and they take my order, what I received was NOT what I ordered. Anytime I come here, I regret it. Long lines, no customer service. Not enough staff on hand. So, I've come to the conclusion it's worth to drive over to Ralph's on Nobel. Rude manager. The other day I was shopping with my mom and we only had maybe 5 items. So I see the Express lane was completely empty and no items on the belt. I noticed there was a line( two people) in one of the isles where people usually wait for Self check out (not even really that close to the express lane) but I still wanted to check with people in that line just to be sure that I wasn't cutting them if they were indeed waiting for Express lane instead of the Self check out. People in line told me "no" they Weren't in line for the Express but the Self-checkout. When I was walking up to the Express lane a Manager( name started with a B and was wearing a mask,not sure who he was) instantly told me to go in line because that line was for Both Express AND Self check out ?? Okay.. I tried to simply explain I already asked the people in that line and they said no, but I couldn't even get out the words without him interrupting me again and saying No that line is for both!. So I just went behind the two people waiting in line for Self check out for the Express lane... Been coming to this Vons twice a week since undergrad and now a grad student and never had a bad experience until recently. Bought two cases of water and groceries, used the self checkout. While using the hand held scanner, the wire from the scanner pulled on a case of these weird egg shaped chocolate candies (why are those even there in the first place? There's clearly not enough room for it). It fell to the ground while I was scanning and one of their new employee, a tall African American guy came over and verbally harassed me about it. He eventually picked it up. I thanked him since I had too much groceries and my cart in my way to pick it up myself. His exact response was "I didn't do it for you" and walked off. I told the supervisor Myrna regarding the incident. The guy obviously has a lot of anger management issues and are not in the right state of mind. I'm not sure he should be near customers at all. Usually you don't think twice about the quality of a grocery store visit. It's get in, get what you need, get out. But shopping at this Vons is downright frustrating. The fresh meats and dairy sections are always under-stocked and often don't have basic items. Nearly every time I've had to get fresh chicken to make soup, there are only legs or party wings, and I never see whole fryers available. Yesterday, I asked the butcher who told me they were "sold out." When the cashier greeted me with a friendly "Did you find everything you needed today?" she didn't seem too happy when I told her no. She advised me, based on non-existent information, to "Come back tonight." Well, I was fighting a cold and wanting to head home (hence why I wanted chicken soup in the first place), so having to go out again or go to another store was not in my plan. I left the store and went home without what I needed, and this has happened a few times (read: enough) in the last few months. I've also frequently ended up not buying the milk I need because they are out of non-fat, or 1%. Yesterday I was glad to get one of two gallons that were on the shelf. Maybe there were more in the back, but based on my experiences I wouldn't be so hopeful. Recently I also tried to buy ice cream novelties, and was frustrated that a lot of them were sold out. I ended up buying a half-gallon of ice cream, which just didn't hit the spot for me. I wouldn't be critical except that NO OTHER grocery store has the same frustrating inventory problems. I go to this Vons because it's more convenient, but I think I've finally learned my lesson, to go to the mammoth Ralph's down the street and battle the horridly busy crossfire parking lot over there...because THAT supermarket always has everything I need and won't waste my time. POSITIVES?: --Great wine section that is ALWAYS in stock on every bottle. --Always a great experience ordering custom made cakes from this location. Vons definitely is not as big as Ralph's but it has most of my necessities and is easy to maneuver. It's never very crowded and is always fairly clean. I've always been pretty happy with service here. The deli has it's highs and lows with freshness of cooked chicken(wings, tenders, etc). When fresh, it's awesome! I of course said yes and he pointed out a couple of different selections. I then skipped over to the garlic bin and again, another worker said hello and asked if I needed any assistance. How nice! Apryl and I shop here on a regular basis. It's not a very large grocery store but it's close to our place. It gets very busy during the evening with that after-work-have-to-get-dinner rush of people. Most of the shoppers drive their carts much the way they drive their cars in UTC: all over the place and without any regard for the safety of other shoppers, displays or basic common sense. The layout is convenient, but for some odd reason, whenever Apryl and I enter the store, we are drawn to the right hand side, the soda aisle in particular. We both are clueless as to the reason behind this strange draw, and we always seem to come up with the same answer, "I was following you!" Hmmm. The butcher block closes early! They start wrapping up the meat and hosing down the floors to close by 7pm. I don't know about the rest of UTC, but I'm not craving some steak until at least 8pm. The portly fellow behind the counter, I'm pretty sure he stands on some sort of stool, is usually helpful if you can make it to the department before they start their daily 'close down' dance. Last night we went there to grab a couple of sandwiches. The portly fellow that normally mans the butcher block was working in the service deli tonight. He recognized us and offered up some sort of comment about how we weren't cooking meat tonight. Some huge woman with big gold earrings and weird hair, looking very out of place, took our sandwich orders and proceeded to make a couple pitiful, sloppy looking sandwiches. We reluctantly accepted our subs and walked over to grab some wine. I convinced Apryl to not throw her paper wrapped sub towards the deli department from the far end of the store and we held hands on our way to the check stands. Overall, it's a decent store. It has all of the products I require, as I have the pleasure of being the personal chef to a gorgeous princess. The employees are good for a laugh or two while they provide entertainment as they run around during the busy hours. Beware of the aimless shoppers, they're dangerous to feet, end displays of glass bottles and small children... I've been going to this Vons since it opened over 30 years ago. I go elsewhere for large purchases for the pricing, but this Vons is so convenient and close it gets a visit quite frequently. I've never met a bad mannered or surly employee at Vons. But then I'm a nice guy so maybe they are just reacting to me. Even the cashier Rose mentioned in other reviews has always been nice, knows my name and greets me with a smile. I've never had items tossed or squished. The baggers seem to be well trained and never put solids on top of squishables. The lines have never been long and plenty of times when they went over three people in line a new line opened immediately. Their produce is always fresh (I've run into fruit flies at Ralph's). They've taken suggestions and carried items in the deli that I've shown interest in. They have renovated over the years and only gotten better. About the only thing I can think of that know that knocks them down from a five star is that the size of the store keeps them from having a larger selection of things. The store is over 30 years old. But very clean, never an odor. I really like the selection of large carts, hand baskets and the new mini-carts. If you are a "Just for You" Von's club member, the price of many items goes down up to 50%. Much of the time my receipt is down a third from regular price, particularly when you take into account the personalized nature of some of the digital coupons. The rewards on the club membership have allowed me to get up to a dollar a gallon off gas prices at the Vons gas station in Pacific Beach. Well worth the extra couple miles drive. read more

I started coming to this Vons because the Ralphs at La Jolla Village Square is more crowded than a pedestrian street in Mumbai. (I've never actually been to Mumbai, but I am assuming it is quite crowded!) This place is just your standard grocery store. Good bakery, decent looking produce section, good deli, and all around good selection of food items. I would have to say that their bakery is above average for a grocery store. Sometimes I buy a slice of cake here for the heck of it, and the ones I have gotten have all been really good! Actually better tasting than some cakes that fancy bakeries offer. Their cookies and cupcakes are well made too. Checkers are friendly, store is kept clean and stocked well. My only complaint is that this store gets quite crowded, especially at peak times. There's not much you can do about that though, just make an effort to not go during rush hour. Oh, one more peeve: They are always out of my beloved Light Starbucks Doubleshots! :( read more
