I used to live right next to this location, so I used to come here quite a bit. If you've ever been to a vons to safeway before, you pretty much know what to expect. The have good sales and the prices are a little higher than ralphs, but what sets this place apart from similar grocery stores is their floral department. Oh. My. Gosh. You wouldn't expect much from such a small unassuming stand, but they really do good work here. I've gotten flowers here for the last two valentines days and my girlfriend's graduation and the flowers were always super beautiful and my girlfriend loved them every time. Now, I don't know much about flowers at all, and the people that work here are always pretty knowledgeable about the different flowers that they carry, and if you're looking for something they don't carry they're pretty good about telling you where you can find it. read more

Cowards work here. Cowards and idiots also shop here. The queue for the self check out is awkward. There is no real solution either. The queue more or less starts at the beginning of the frozen food aisle. There is a sizable gap between the start of the queue and the self check out machines. The reason for the gap is that otherwise the queue would completely jam the aisle that goes length-wise across the store. So, a few months back I was standing in line for the self check out. I got to the front of the queue and one of the self check-out machines opened up. I was just starting to cross the gap when some guy walked right up to the open machine to start using it. This guy was a real piece of work. He had a bright neon green t-shirt and parachute pants straight outta the 90s. He was shorter than me (about 5'7"), Hispanic, wiry, tattoos up and down both arms and neck, and he had gold fronts. He was this bizarro mix of clown and gang-banger. Let's call him "Clowner". I should have just sighed and let Clowner use the machine. It is a common mistake at this store. I see people jump the line all the time, because they are completely oblivious that those of us waiting are in a queue down the friggin' frozen food aisle. Well, I was already in motion. I told Clowner that there was a line and that I was next. I set my basket down on the machine and started scanning my first item. Clowner moved so that he was mere inches away from me, and asked, "What line?" I pointed to the frozen food aisle and said, "There." Of course, at this exact moment, there was no one queued up. No one had lined up behind me. Clowner was mad-dogging me big time. Clowner said, "I don't see no line." Neither did I. I replied that there was a queue and that we were lined up down the frozen food aisle. I looked at the ginger-haired guy at the self check-out machine right across from me. He had been standing in line right in front of me. I asked this guy to confirm to Clowner that we had been queued up and waiting for the machines. The ginger-haired coward refused to look up or acknowledge me. Clowner had now moved about another inch or two closer to me. He said, "Since you know all the rules here, how about this stuff I want to buy? Am I allowed to buy these things here? Huh? Is it cool if I want to buy this stuff? Where should I stand now? How 'bout I stand right here next to you?" Clowner was getting more and more riled up. At this point a couple people started to queue up down the frozen food aisle, but Clowner refused to look back at them. I started asking everyone at the self check-out machines to back me up and confirm that we had all stood in a queue. I even asked the pimply-faced coward Vons employee working in that section to confirm that we had all waited in a line for the machines. A second Vons employee walked past and deliberately stared straight at the floor as he passed through. No one would look up, look in my direction, speak up or acknowledge me in any way. Cowards, the whole lot of them! The coward immediately to my right wrapped up his purchase and I told Clowner to use that machine. "Can I? Are you giving me permission to use that machine? What if I just want to wait here right next to you instead?" I just shook my head exasperatedly. Clowner had long ago entered into irrational a-hole territory, and as much I had several inches on him, and probably about 50 pounds, getting into a tussle in the middle of Vons was not something I wanted to do. Clowner's to the left of me, and cowards to the right, here I am, stuck in the middle. I finished my purchase and got the heck out of there. Clowner was yelling after me as I walked out if he had permission to use the machine now. Ladies, be forewarned, if you ever find yourself in a situation at this Vons, you will only have yourself to depend on. There are no other men that shop here. Only scared little boys. I no longer shop in Ralphs (Kroger) VONS or Albertsons if I can help it. How is that for a 1 star you overpriced BEE-atches. $5 for a carton of milk? 2$ for lettuce? Puhhhh-leeze! My reasons and facts to back this up: A few years ago when Vons/Ralphs/Albertsons all went on strike, I realized they are first of all all together no matter how we viewed them previously. At this Vons the cashiers are friendly and the location is great (easily walkable for people who live in the neighborhood) but there's a problem with long checkout lines in the late evening. I had the same experience here over and over when I used to live nearby: slip into the store for a beer run around 9pm, find a six pack of Stone, and...doh!...get in a really long line of people with grocery carts full of food and tampons and whatnot. I lived a wall away from this place, and would hop over every time I came home from school and stared into an empty refrigerator. Their artisan breads were a staple in my diet (and it showed), so I would frequent the bread area with carb-lusting eyes. MMmmm jalepeno cheese...kalamata olive...sourdough.. *note: the bread isn't actually THAT great, I was starving then* "Hello! Finding everything alright?" AH! Damn bakery lady. Ruined the mood. Carb reverie disturbed. Moving on to produce. MMmmmm cherries...if I could only afford...ohh avocados..damn too expensive...tangerines....$9 a box?!.. "Hi! How are you today?" AH! Creepy produce guy! I don't want produce any more. *Heads to bottled water section* DAMN! The tall students have almost cleared the shelves of the kind of water I want. *looks around* Where the hell are the service people? So..that was like the story of my life shopping at this Vons. Things are ridiculously priced, the workers are freakishly (think Pleasantville or Stepford Wives) helpful when they're not needed, and nonexistent when they are. I was invited to my uncle's surprise 50th birthday party tomorrow so I thought I'd get his present shopping done during my lunch break from work today. That's when I decided to go to Vons since shopping for a bottle of liquor there seemed easy enough, right? Well I was proven otherwise. I decided on purchasing a bottle of the Chivas Regal that was packaged in a nice holiday tin. However, the display did not list the price for it, so I searched throughout the entire liquor section for it myself. However, I had no luck in finding the price, so I thought I'd ask an employee (a college-aged male) for assistance since he was restocking the wine nearby. Here's how my unpleasant conversation went: Me: "Excuse me, do you know how much this is?" Employee: "It's the same price as the regular bottle." Me: "Well, how much is that?" Employee: "Whatever price is listed below the regular bottle." Me (trying so hard not to karate chop him in the neck): "I DON'T KNOW WHERE THE REGULAR BOTTLE IS LOCATED." Employee (as he walks over to the bottle obviously irritated): "$26.99" Me (trying so hard not to shove my foot up his arse): "THANK YOU." Seriously dude? Don't act like a punk with me because you have to help me, a loyal Vons customer, on something which I thought was a simple task for you. That encounter really upset me, but kudos to the Hallmark employee lady who was able to happily assist me with finding the one card they had available specifically for my uncle's milestone of a birthday during this same visit. I only go here because it's so close to my home. This review is mainly for my most recent visit here. I came here on a Sunday evening, and the grocery store was pretty packed. After going through their sad wine/champagne collection and then walking to the other side of the store for orange juice, I was horrified by the lines. There were only two registers open, and the lines for that were all the way down to the back aisle. The self-check out line was worse. I chose the "shortest" line and was in line for about 30 minutes to buy two things... There were other workers walking around, and no one (by no one, I mean the employees) did anything to accomodate the overflowing 3 lines. I was even more appalled that they didn't open their express line, which would have made a huge difference seeing that a lot of people around me have less than three things. When I was closer to the front, they opened up a new register (finally) but instead of letting the customers who were waiting in line know about it, new customers who were not in line were already piling up to that new register. Terrible system, and the lack of hard workers made my experience very unsatisfied. I think next time, I'll make the drive to Ralphs/Trader Joes instead. read more

It was 10:06pm, I had just arrived at Von's from a much-dreaded midterm, and was extremely sleep-deprived. In my right hand was the salvation from a long ass school week in the form of an ice cream pint. All that stood between me and bliss: checkout. Scratch that, Cashier Lady. There's usually one, but in this case, there were two: Cashier Lady 1 and Cashier Lady 2. Apparently, they were going to do a shift change. Really? Seemed more like a chatting session to me. I thought, "Come on, I just wanted to gorge myself on ice cream, will you not accept my monies?" Nope, things are never that simple. Random Guy 1 walks over and informs Cashier Lady 2 that there was a two-car accident outside. Whoa, serious business here. Cashier Lady 2 proceeded to use her PA, then called a number. She just started her shift, but she was already pissed. And she wasn't doing her job as Cashier Lady. "Guess I have to help myself..." There I was, at the threshold, with my tub of ice cream, tired, exhausted, and ready to give in to the pull of gravity. Credit card error after credit card error, Cashier Lady 2 beat down on me with her condescending tone, I could tell she was annoyed at me. It took more than 20 minutes for the whole checkout process, with half the time spent at the actual checkout. The experience was a bit traumatizing. Good thing I had that pint of ice cream. Did I mention they close at midnight and usually have lines at the checkout running back through the aisles, even at 11pm? Might as well take the 5min drive to Ralph's, do your shopping there, and take the 5min drive back. You'll probably be done sooner than shopping here. Never again. read more

This is hands down the best grocery store in UTC. If it was located in any other city I would rate it 3 stars because it is a very average grocery store with average prices. In comparison to the other options in UTC though, it is amazing. My biggest complaint with the grocery stores in UTC is the difficulty to find parking and being so overcrowded. This particular Vons is usually not very crowded and there is ample parking. I also am not a huge fan of the overpriced/gimmicky "healthy" grocery stores like Trader Joes/Whole Foods/etc either. Vons has reasonable prices for reasonably fresh produce/meats. I really only go to this Vons when I need something small and just want to get in and out quick. When I need a lot of stuff I place a delivery order on Vons.com and they deliver my groceries to my apt. If you have never tried the Vons.com service, I highly recommend it as well! read more

I really like this Vons. I mean it's a grocery store so you pretty much know what to expect when you go there. What sets this apart from all the other similar grocery stores in the area is the ample parking. I mean seriously, you never have to worry about finding a spot here! The layout is easy to navigate, it's not too big that you get lost lol, and the workers are cheery and helpful. They are also open till 2am bc UCSD students shop here late night. All around, great. I'm torn when it comes to this Vons. Their customer service is always great - I'm constantly asked if I need help finding anything, always greeted with a smile. They have a good stock of food, and it's priced normally. The downside comes with their fresh fruits. I've had multiple times where I've wanted to grab some blueberries or blackberries or raspberries, or strawberries...berries in general, I suppose, and while going through pint by pint trying to find a good batch, I can find nothing but fuzzy mold-covered fruit. It doesn't happen every time, but it's happened more than a few, so it's something you have to watch out for. read more

When you write a Yelp review about Vons, that's a sign that something is not right! Or that something is spectacular. Don't get your hopes up. I've been tolerating Vons, my friendly neighborhood grocery store for 4+ years now, but today's experience put me over the edge. #1 - Vons doesn't sell much at all. Why is their inventory so small? I went to find ground pork for a recipe, and there was only one brand of ground pork. One brand!! And it was not the right ground size or quantity that I was looking for, but I had no other choice... #2 - Product placement makes no sense. Why would you put croutons underneath the onion bin? Wouldn't it make more sense to put croutons next to salad dressings perhaps? Just a thought. #3 - Food that should be "fresh" is not fresh. Not only is it not fresh, it borders on rotten. I saw cherry tomato batches that had white mold. The tomatoes were so OLD that they were past wilted...they were just rotten. Also going back to the ground pork, one of the packages had BROWN meat in it. Last time I checked, fresh meat is bright red. And I get it...food spoils. It spoils at other grocery stores too, but Vons fails to remove the rotten/spoiled products from its shelves. Disgusting. #4 - Everything is way overpriced. A small bag of spinach is $3.99...wtf?? Other grocery stores sell it for $1.99. Vons earns one star for the Starbucks inside. read more

I go here literally every other day to buy groceries. One of the things I really like is the butcher's counter in the back where their chicken breasts are WAY cheaper than buying them in the packages ($2.99/lb). Plus, during the summers they make skewers with chicken and beef (both good) and they always have pre-made chicken breasts stuffed with good stuff. You have to get there before 7pm though or the counter might be closed. Their selection of freshly made bread is usually pretty good. I recently discovered their italian focaccia bread which is amazing for sandwiches. I also love their donuts. Their cakes aren't great. I usually go to Ralphs to get cakes. The selection of produce is ok. Just the basics but I can usually find what I need for my recipes. The staff is ok. They've all been working there for years so most of them know what they're doing, but at the same time aren't as friendly as new people might be. Sometimes the people who stock the shelves are in the way, but whatever, I mean if my job were stocking shelves I don't think I'd be super friendly and attentive to the customers either. About a year ago they installed the self-checkout which is great. Ya the machines are kind of annoying and they're always asking for store approval for this and that, but at least you don't have to wait in lines where people are buying tons of stuff and don't have to talk to the checkers. This vons can get super crowded at 7pm on the weekdays because of all of the undergrads shopping. Summer is the best when the undergrads are GONE. It'd be nice is VONS had more checkers, but I think they had to get rid of a lot of people when the economy started to dip. I can't complain too much. read more

Before they remodeled this place, it used to make buying milk seem really depressing. It used to be dark, bland, dirty and they didn't have much of anything. I usually would go to Albertsons (before it was Bristol Farms) but I'd come here if I was in the plaza to pick up some Leucadia or if it was on the way. If they didn't remodel it, everyone would have gone all the way to Ralphs which is so much bigger and 24hrs. But now that they have, it's so much more of a pleasant experience and the customer service is really good. When they first opened, it was border line annoying the way that the workers would walk up to you smiling asking you if you needed help finding anything every 2 minutes. But I guess really annoying good services is better than bad service. read more

I live a block away and I've never had an issue here, food wise. Consistent with their products and although their prices are a bit higher than Ralphs, I tend to find myself saving some bucks through their Safeway "Just 4 U" app, which I always look at before I start shopping. Whoever doesn't use their Von's Reward Card is dumb b/c you save a lot. The App offers personalized deals and other coupons that are not advertised in front of the food. I like the size of this store, it's not as big as Ralph's and it's not overwhelming. The employees seem to be friendly although, just the other day I was waiting in line to use the self-check out. When it was my turn, I was walking to my station and a Von's employee (Dan, I think) walked straight to it to purchase his Arizona Iced Tea. He didn't even look up, he didn't say excuse me, he didn't say sorry, perhaps he was in his own mind-set and simply did not realize there was a line but I didn't say anything because it looked like he was on his lunch break (hopefully). Perhaps the employees should be more aware of the lines up front and look before they cut in line! read more

I used to always go to this VONS because it is so close to my apartment, but the last couple of times, the girl with the red "mask" at self checkout does not take Covid seriously. Her nose is constantly exposed and the mask is constantly falling off of her face. Today she pulled down her mask completely while speaking to a coworker. I don't know what makes her so precious that she doesn't feel she needs to wear an adequate mask. I will have to go to Ralph's instead. read more

I love SAFEWAY (the REAL name for Vons). Can't you tell I'm a born and raised Norcal girl? :) I have lived really close to this location for 5 months now. It's super convenient. It's also just like any other grocery store, food, drinks, supplies.... Thing that stands out about this location: Their lines move fast, unlike some grocery stores where you can wait anywhere from a minute to twenty. COUGH COUGH mira mesa vons COUGH COUGH Thing that I really don't like: Their apple selection. And their lack of sales on apples. I LIKE my apples. And I also enjoy sales. I'm used to seeing apples on sale at least every week. Maybe Fuji one week, then golden delicious the next. I have NEVER seen apples on sale at this location. They don't even have a wide variety of apples. Where are the pink ladies??? This apple problem is RIDICULOUS. And makes for an angry customer aka ME. For the most part it is well kept and stocked up with all the things I need. Service can be a bit iffy since they are so busy...sometimes it is hard to get help. 3.5 stars This Vons is located near the Playmor area of San Diego where a lot of college students live. It's very convenient from where I live to walk there. I usually am in there pretty quickly in and out to get what I want. There are sometimes really good deals on their products and even a better deal when you purchase their brand items ! I like the parking lot way better than the Ralphs parking lot a couple minutes away. They don't have weird poles and such so I think even though rumor has it Vons does cost a bit more, it's more convenient and less busy as to ralphs. However it's not 24 hours like Ralphs so you win some you lose some. Also I don't suggest going during 4-7 because it tends to get really busy and they usually only have like 2 registers available and self checkout read more

The produce and meats always look bad and I've even found expired milk and juice. This place is freakin dirty. Not Walmart dirty, but still generally dirty. Old store dirty. I go to this vons 3-5 times a week and i never have any problems here, it is usually great customer service and they now hav jelly beans there, small selection but good choices. Tonight all i got was jelly beans and a frozen item and the old asian person names rose chan threw my items across the counter and didn't say anything, i do t appreciate when they angrily scan items cause they don't want to work late hours. Came here looking for fruit. All I wanted was fruit. Fruit and cottage cheese. What I found was a VERY limited produce section with little to no fresh fruit. I turned the corner and found a small end cap fridge with pre-package fruits and celery sticks. I was very disappointed and ended up with two peaches and packaged watermelon. I couldn't believe how singular their produce section was. Went to get some chicken breast. Easy enough. Onto dairy. Uh....where's the cottage cheese?????? No cottage cheese at all. Not that they were sold out. I couldn't even find a label for it in the empty shelves. Sure it was New Year's Eve at 6pm but come on now. Seriously. Not the cleanest Vons I've been in and the staff was absent. I would have asked for assistance if someone were around but I didn't find any employees except for the cashiers. I called to see if they had the patio set I was looking for (I had called all the other 15 Vons in SD already, with no luck), and Matt saved my life by saying that he did have it in stock. I asked him to hold it for me, and when I got there, he let me do a little grocery shopping before he took the set down from above the fridge. Matt even helped bring it out to the car. Just absolutely wonderful customer service, on his end. And, yes, as other reviewers have mentioned, this store is pretty clean. This is a great grocery store. The prices are usually decent and the selection is good too for the most part. It's sometimes difficult to find what you're looking for because of the set up, but I think that's just grocery stores in SD in general! What really sets this store apart is the super friendly service. I've never walked into the store without being greeted. The cashiers are quick and polite and always call you by name when you use your Von's card. The pharmacy here is also very good. They accept most insurance plans, in fact this was the only place I could find in the area that took mine! And while their hours may not be like CVS, the pharmacist(s) are the most helpful I've ever met. Overall, a nice shopping experience at Von's! :-) read more

As much as I love this Vons, and how clutch it is considering I live 1 minute walking distance, there are a few things they need to improve upon to get better. Firstly, let's start positive, they have good prices on a lot of items, things are easy to find and their staff has been nothing but kind and helpful. I've had various instances of Vons associates going out of their way just to say hi and ask how my day was going. And if you need assistance they always gladly walk you to your destination. Now, there is not much more as can be said about a grocery store, so I'll proceed to the negative aspect. My only quarrel, and I'm sure anyone who has been here between around 4-7 can attest, is that they need to hire or schedule A LOT more people during their "rush" hours. It says on the wall by the register "Servicing La Jolla Since 1985". Dont quote me on the exact year, but suffice it to say its been a while. And you're telling me after all these years you haven't figured out that at 5 o'clock, if there is a massive line at one register, and the line at self checkout stretches all the way through the aisle to the meat department, that you shouldn't schedule more people to alleviate the saturated wait times? This is how they lose business, as my friends and I have given a mighty "Fuck this!" to the lines if they are too long. This shouldn't be happening on a daily basis and it does. Other than that, great job Vons! Just get your scheduling conflicts worked out and I guarantee the customers will be happy. Cheers! read more

For three months the deli ran out of tops for the cole slaw etc. they used large soda tops from the coke machine! I kid you not! the tops had a hole in the center for a straw!Today, was at the vons in Del Mar. They no longer have the ties to close bags in the produce dept. Lines are long. Expect to wait 10+ minutes on a Friday or Saturday night. A couple of the managers are good at speeding things up by directing people to the self-checkout. However, some of the managers are dolts. I caught one guy not able to help an elderly man make change because he said he had "just punched out." Conveyor belts are nasty. During a purchase yesterday, a clerk pulled out some wet bathroom paper towel and started rubbing it over her workspace. I'm surprised there hasn't been a salmonella outbreak. To the best you can, take your items from the cart and hand them to the cashier. It's a pain, but I definitely wouldn't put produce onto those nasty germ belts. read more

Sometimes the prices are good in comparison to Ralph's down on Nobel but I don't feel good being in this Von's. It might be the crowdedness of all the products or the way they arrange their shelves or even the lighting. I much prefer to drive a little longer to go to Ralph's even though I live literally right behind Von's. I was told Von's alcohol is cheaper but if you buy it in bulk Ralph's seems cheaper with their buy six get 30% off all. The snacks are across from the dairy section (butter/ sour cream) so it's really cold when I'm looking for chips and crackers. The sodas are also very far away from the chips. You'd think they'd place them closer together because they are compliments to each other and is a necessity at nearly every party. The eggs are closer to the sodas at the deep corners of the store. Just the whole set up at Von's make me drive to another store. The Von's by DT La Jolla on pearl st. I think is so much better. read more

Always fantastic service at this Vons. I was there the other day trying to buy 45 bottles of wine for my team and I know nothing about wine.
