This used to be the only full grocery store left in the entire South Bay that was still open 24 hours or at least till 4am. No more, which seems completely crazy to me in a city like Los Angeles! That said, they are still open till 2am, at least, so better than most grocery chains that close at 10 or midnight. Von's is pricier than other chains but has its redeeming features, the main one being their comparably EXCELLENT fresh bakery department with great fresh pastries, cakes, croissants, and bread that is about as good as bread gets in the USA... The other are their well-priced house brand (Lucerne?) dairy products. Some nice fruit bowls. Other than that, just your average grocery store. read more

What a disaster. Tried their internet ordering & pickup service on July 3. Ordered in the morning for a 5 pm pickup. When we arrived and called the number they couldn't find our order, by our name or by our order number. Said it wasn't in their system. She assured us that it wouldn't be in the system and that we wouldn't be charged. When the lady came out to deliver to another car, I showed her the confirmation, the date, the time, & the store. She said, "that's weird" but she assured me that it wasn't in the system. My wife was already braving the store & the lines to get the stuff we had ordered earlier that day. When she gets back to the car, she sees a text that says the order was ready. (The order that the lady at the store couldn't find in the system.) When we got home we called the store and were assured that our credit card wouldn't be charged. Guess what, this morning my wife finds the charge on her card too. What a disaster. Vons is a pretty clean and organized store with a variety of foods and products to choose from. If you have a Tom Thumb in your area, I would compare the two- especially in pricing. But, Vons is way too expensive for your everyday grocery staples. For example, ​Nature's Own bread was $4.79, when it's about $2.00 less at Target. Produce is ridiculously overpriced and the premade guacamole was $7.00... The employees were friendly, and there were girl scouts selling cookies, so that gives them a few bonus points for overpriced grocery items. read more

This is my favorite Vons in the South Bay. They have a great produce section, full service deli and bakery and a Starbucks as well. Always plenty of checkers so getting in and out is pretty fast. They have a Western Union counter and they never have a problem exchanging money for rolled quarters either. The parking lot is s bit hectic so ingress and egress can be tricky and there are several restaurants and shops that share the same parking lot. read more

Anyone shopping at this store should be very cautious of the advertisements and what is actually rung-up at the registers. The flyers for VONS week of July 22 to July 28 had the Lucerne Large Eggs (limit 2) for $0.99. Last Friday using my VONS reward card, at the register it rang up at over TWO DOLLARS. My truck does not get the best mileage, so I bit the bullet and lost that savings because I didn't scan the receipt before leaving the store. Today my wife went shopping at that same VONS. The Foster Farms Ground Turkey was supposedly $1.88 rang up at around $10 for two packages. My wife had to argue with the store personnel to bring this significant error to their attention. A salad dressing that she selected was advertised as $3.99 rang up at $4.99. Same goes for a salad that was advertised at $2.99 rang up at $3.99. She has previously work for 17 years at a major food store where if the price was higher than the advertisement price, the item was free. The guy at the register said "we don't do that here". The first register receipt she got was well over THIRTY dollars. Impossible! After returning to the same register twice, she finally received a $10 credit towards her credit card. It seems that even the manager did not care to apologize for their errors. The next correspondence I will have will be documenting this with the LA County Weights and Measures. Just ordered a bunch of stuff to be picked up curbside at this Von's location (our home location). They had an 18-roll pack of Charmin toilet paper on their website ($18.99), and we ordered it. When we got the order filled and ready to pick up, we noticed that that item was substituted for a 6-roll pack ($9.99). We called to speak with someone to ask why the substitution choice, requesting to at least add another pack of the same size since we have a family of 3. They literally said there is nothing they can do, and we would have to add a brand new order (which also requires a $35 minimum). There was no communication of any kind before they made that decision for us. This is absolutely ridiculous, especially considering the difference in price. I am not going to Von's again. read more

3 stars seems about right for this location which kind of surprises me since it is in the heart of HB. When I had to run in for something, I was a bit surprised at how messy the bakery session was. There were cardboard boxes stocked up high with paper garbage in front of the King's Hawaiian Bread display. In order to reach the bread you had to really reach around this mound of junk. Vons is not my usual grocery store, so I don't know if this was an anomaly or not. The whole bakery section seemed discombobulated and a bit disordered. read more

It's really a delightful store to shop in, it's like a Safeway but somehow nicer (they're the same company you probably know), you CAN use your Safeway card there too. Food is high quality of course, full service butcher, don't know for sure about Bakery, didn't check that section. But the wine selection is unbelievable. Let's say they were All excellent, at one bottle per day, every day - okay, maybe you'd take one night per week off, it looks like it'd take over 2 yrs try em all! This Vons in Hermosa has quite the selection of whatever you need. The fresh fish is affordable and there is a decent variety to choose from. Whenever I feel like a cheapskate but want sushi, I stop over at this Vons for their sushi - the spicy tuna rolls are decent and $6.50 for approximately 8 pieces. There are also a number of other rolls and nigiri. Because TJ is lacking in this department, Vons is my #1 on this front. The freezer section has a massive selection of Ben & Jerry's, Talenti gelato, and all the other favorites. The lot has plenty of parking and is situated to serve CVS and a few other small businesses. read more

This has been our closest and regular grocery store for years. We really have enjoyed the selection and the people who have worked there. Unfortunately it has been going downhill ever since Albertsons took it over. They changed our favorite store baked sourdough bread. The overall selection is now lacking. The self check out system is clunky at best. And unfortunately many of the workers seem unhappy and don't want to be there. I can now officially say I no longer want to shop there either. All I can say with regards to today is I have never been accused for not paying for an item before. So when the self checkout tzar ran out the store to say I didn't pay for my ice, I was shocked. I told her I did and showed the receipt. Turns out I bought the wrong bag because they don't have all the ice in the same place in their check out system. The manager came over and asked me to pay for it. I explained what happened and he said no problem. If it's no problem why I am I getting chased out the store? I placed a delivery order from this store, and then got a text saying they'd delivered it, but no groceries. When I called the store the guy gave me some fantastical story about how the delivery company had been hacked (??) and that the groceries hadn't even been picked up from the store yet. Said he'd personally reach out to the delivery company to make sure it was scheduled. Hours later, no groceries. Called the store and the guy was totally clueless. I spoke with a store supervisor (mind you they charged me over $100 for this order) and she said she'd refund the order, and have the manager call me the next day. Well here we are 5 days later, the charge is still on my account, no groceries, and never a follow up call from the manager. Vons is vons, and usually a decent experience. However, I concur with the other reviewers...the staff was rude and seemed to be leading wretched lives. From the moment I walked in and ordered a hazelnut latte @ the Starbucks..the Starbucks dudes were unfriendly and devoid of personality. My older, blonde female checker was the worst, barely looked up at me...and also, the other patrons at this Vons seemed rude, too cool, and thought they were shopping in Beverly Hills or something. At least Manhattan Beach Vons and Ralphs are friendly( which I would have thought otherwise), didn't expect this display from Hermosa Beach. This review is specifically for the deli, but since I'm here anyway, Trophy Wives - Check Dimly Lit Store- Check Awesome Produce - Check "Pick-Up" Vons- Check Starbucks all up in this beyotch - Check Ok, on to the Deli, I frequent this deli when I can no longer take another day of leftovers for lunch, and it's been over 30 days since my last visit, because by then I've almost forgotten what a complete and total time suck vortex it actually is. When you go to the Deli make sure you get Patricia to make you your sandwich, because she's the best. Unfortunately she KNOWS she's the best and will spend an inordinate amount of time chastising the other deli workers for "doing it wrong". She might even stop making your sandwich entirely to give another employee the "what for", but just relax, because it's for the greater good of the Vons, OK? You're going to need to adjust your expectations here in order to leave satisfied. For example, how long should it take to make 1 sandwich? 10 minutes? 20 minutes? 30 minutes? I know it shouldn't even take 10 minutes, but you're just not going to be leaving that store with your lunch in anything less than 20 minutes, and that's if you're the only person in line and it's a really good day. So plan on 30 and walk out happy. Why 30 minutes? Because this deli has all the efficiency of the DMV. For example the bread resides 15 feet behind the deli counter, you place your order, they get the bread, and if you ordered a 6 inch sandwich, they have to return the other 6 inch half to the bread storage, and re-bag it, and then walk back. Same goes for the toaster. Oh, and when the sandwich is done they have to walk 24 feet to the label maker to print up your sandwich label. For some reason, they make the sandwiches one at a time, so if you're getting 3 of them, that's 3 trips to the bread storage, 3 trips to the toaster and three trips to the label maker. You can see how this is beginning to eat away at your lunch hour. One piece of advice, DO NOT try to get the deli people to ring you up, I know you're looking over at the long lines in check out and you THINK that by getting the deli to ring up your sandwich, drink and chips that you're going to "save time". Well, let me tell you, it's a fool's game. The deli will do everything with in their power to avoid ringing you up, including telling you that they don't have the "code" or that someone else will be by to ring you up in a second (they won't). So save yourself the headache, and go straight to the check out stands. That said, I have to say that the sandwiches are tasty and that the bakery here rocks my socks (Boston Creme Cake, to die for, feeds 5, $6.99!) read more

I still want to come to this Vons but since I had given them a good review, the last two visits have been a bit weird. Yesterday the cashier thought it was ok to comment and really look at one of the items I was buying. She was talking to the staff bagging my items asking her if the cream cheese I was buying was the onion flavored and asked to see it. The bagger hands it to her and she looks at it and finds it amusing. She then says to the bagger oh I thought it was the onion flavored one. The bagger says oh because of the green label. The cashier seemed to think it was amusing that I was uncomfortable and watching their interaction. That is unprofessional. I don't think any customer wants the cashier to be nosy about the products they are buying for whatever reason. And obviously enjoying my discomfort is definitely uncalled for. I like this Vons. It's across the street from the gym so I can walk over after a workout. Mainly, I come for produce. The people who work in that area are always helpful whenever I have a question to ask. I only get a few items at a time so I always go to one of the express lines to pay. The store isn't huge (so it's not intimidating) but it also seems to carry a decent selection of items. I come off hours so I haven't had to wait very long in line most of the time. The cashiers are nice. Prices seem decent. The store is clean. I come here maybe about twice a month. read more

I felt really badly for the deli guy today. Saturday afternoon and he was the only one back there working his butt off. So nice too.... There must have been a scheduling error because we were waiting forever and people were being so mean to him. Not cool. The reason I went in today was to pick up two items that I had paid for but weren't bagged. Not sure why... Anyways, it's still the most convenient grocery store for me to go to and I like the people there, they just need to step a couple things up a little! Like schedule more deli people please:) ----------- I like this Von's! Everything is always fresh and fully stocked and the employees are always really helpful and nice. I don't like how they just started charging ten cents a bag for paper bags because they try and stuff as many things as possible into each one to save you money and I literally just had a bag rip as I lifted it into my trunk.. If I'm "buying" something, I'd prefer it not break before it fulfills it's use. But I guess that's my own fault for forgetting my reusable ones in the car!! The only other thing I don't like is that I constantly feel harassed by solicitors that they allow at their entrances. That annoys me. Oh I also really like their flowers! I despise going to the grocery store, but this Vons makes it a little bit easier. Hardwood country floors in the produce section are kinda awesome. Makes it less "grocery" and more "market" feeling. They do a great job of stacking all the produce. Let me tell you the Vons in Culver City, when they even had produce in stock, was all over the floor. I appreciate the attention to detail in this section. I love the characters that check me out. Er, baggage checkers. There is hardly ever a wait for a checker, which really speeds up the shopping process. There's nothing like watching your can of OJ defrost in your hand as you wait 5 deep in line. I recently heard people go here to check out the chix. I am a chick, and yes, dudes approach me which is kind of annoying because I just want to shop, man. Although I have seen "the magic" happening around me and it cracks me up. Yes, they left together. Girl with perfect makeup in butt tight workout gear: "What's that, you know, stuff that makes bread rise?" Guy wearing expensive shoes: "Yeast." Girl zeoring in for the kill: "Omigosh, I'm so silly, of course it's yeast! I'm such a mess right now, all sweaty, but do you want to come over for dinner?" Oh, here's another favorite overheard line... Mildy interested lady checking out the merchandise: "What do you do?" Ass: "I'm a lawyer. I'm pretty humble." I just got back from Vons and noticed they now have organic, gluten free selections really sticking out for you to see. Anywhere I look, they have a sign yelling out at you that its Organic, Natural, etc. I'm not sure how long they have been doing it, but I like it. The whole healthy eating has really caught on around here. Also, prices have been dropping too since the economy is down so we get to save more money! One interesting note for any single guy or gal I would like to share. I've grown up here my entire life and have heard from all sorts of people whether they are married, single, etc that this is the ultimate singles places. Since I am a guy I do see several gorgeous women shopping here at all hours of the day. I am sure it is the same for good looking guys. I even have a friend that lives in Redondo Beach and will shop here at the Von's because of the eye candy. So if you are interested in meeting a future mate, this might be your place..... read more

Guess I'll split the difference...one star for the night crew and five for the day. Now, I know what everyone is talking about. I usually go at night, so I've only experienced the rude service at night (e.g. White, older, male cashier pissed off at the world and didn't make eye contact except to give me an annoyed look for bothering to give him work and a job...didn't say a word to me either to include what my total was). Prices here are decent. Day crew seems much happier and more friendly. I almost wondered if I was in the same store. They had a whole crew of hispanic ladies this morning working and joking and having a good time talking to each other and customers. Loved it. Maybe one of them should be the manager? This Von's has a great variety! Things were kind of hard to find but maybe that's because I usually don't shop at Von's. It's convenient because it's only five minutes from my house. I had a very hard time using the shopping carts because I have a 2 month old and the carrier would not fit anywhere on the cart. That's not necessarily Von's fault but the carrier would have fit inside the cart but all the carts had cup holders mounted on them. Thank goodness I had my 9 year old to push the cart while I carried the baby. I know this seems like a ridiculous complaint but this made shopping a lot harder than it needed to be. Seems like things have changed. Produce isn't great like it used to be. They are constantly out of stock on items. I REALLY don't understand this. If you have an item that sells, why don't you offer more. Take the store brand pretzels. Love them, think they are the best out there. So doa lot of other people. Every time you go to look they are sold out. However, the shelves are packed with pretzels that don't sell. Probably a smart move to order more of the brand that sells then stock what isn't moving. I've been going to Ralph's instead. Granted it costs more but saves me having to go to 3 different stores. My time is more valuable. read more
