Gelson's was my go-to grocery store when I lived in the Cheviot Hills area. I was a young cooking enthusiast interested in buying really good ingredients to make epic meals. I remember falling in love with the produce department because having access to radicchio, endive, watercress, sorrel, heirloom tomatoes (before they became crummy), morel mushrooms and Crenshaw melons was cooler than ice cream at the north pole. My tiny kitchen became my creative space for some tasty meals and to wow my friends. I had my share of failures too, but they only inspired me to keep trying. This Gelson's has been open for quite a while but it's a longer drive from my house by maybe 4 or 6 minutes. That time isn't a deal breaker, it's a convenience thing. It's Gelsons, in Manhattan Beach. You won't find amazing prices here, but you will find some of the best, quality, unique and prime groceries, products and items you never knew you needed. There's a price for this and if you're sensitive, you might be better served at another grocery store. Service was friendly and straightforward. I didn't have to circle the parking lot for a space or squeeze into one meant for a tiny car. Carts were packed full and easily accessible. Shelves stocked full, bakery packed with colorful sweets likely to satisfy anyone's palate and a deli, complete with pre-made packaged delights to make your meal prep easy peasy. Gelson's is in my rotation, especially when I need something special...or even when I don't. read more

What a fantastic store. They have EVERYTHING! And, definitely many choices of items not found in regular stores. A self-service food salad bar which is stocked with everything you desire. A bakery with so many temptations. Many specialty kiosk areas. I went in for chopped liver, Jewish dill half sour pickles, and rye... plus several other impulse buys. It is so clean, orderly, well stocked. Employees are extremely helpful. Love it! read more

This place is smaller than other locations, but has a good hot food, and a great cheese counter. The service is great, there is ample parking. They have a large selection of wine. The place is well stocked and clean. It is pricey but the quality of the meat and produce is excellent. They also have specialty items not carried at other grocery stores. read more

Gelson's Manhattan beach service deli is operating without enough personnel! Furthermore the attitude and morale among the employees working at the service deli needs improvement. This has been noticeable for some time. I thought I was at the post office for a minute but realized that I was at gelson's Manhattan beach where us customers pay top dollar for ever decreasing quantities. This is the manager, her name allow. She watched this lady struggle with multiple people. She walked her ass to the back of the kitchen and then walked off like she's a manager to help people when they're struggling with gloves on it gave slavedriver energy and she needs to be replaced because that shit is disrespectful as fuck. We ordered four sandwiches to bring to the Hollywood Bowl. Bread was too thick and the meat was a blob in the center. Once we picked the meat apart to spread it around they were skimpy sandwiches. For the price Ralph's has a much better product. read more

The salad bar was extremely fresh and good. I enjoy my food when it's healthy and when it taste good. The staff there was kind and helpful, including the manager. The only drawback was that this Gelsons doesn't have a whole turkey that they could carve for you you right there. read more

A lot of reviews on the prepared food on here. Some of them kind of ridiculous because it's not a restaurant-restaurant, it's a grocery store with prepared food what are you expecting???... Anyways, there's almost no reviews on the grocery store. I LOVE Gelson's. And I particularly love THIS Gelson's. We used to frequent the giant Gelson's in Santa Monica off of Lincoln. Though this one is much smaller, I don't feel like I'm missing anything from the large one. They always have the special produce I'm looking for that I can't find at Whole Foods. They always have that one special ingredient I'm looking for that I need for a recipe. And they ALWAYS! have so many fun brands and items that you will never be able to find at another grocery store. Seriously, browse the cookie isle. Or the chocolate isle. Or the cheese case. Or the ice cream isle. Waygu hot dogs? Yes, please. In addition to the fun "outside" brands, Gelson's has it's own label of foods on their shelves. They started this a handful of years ago, and I'm suprised at how much better it is than a lot of other similar products you can buy. I especially recommend trying their marinara sauces (the Diablo Sauce is so good!!!) and their wine! They've won awards for their more expensive bottles of wine. I visited the wine bar at Gelson's and had dinner there. There's a sushi chef that makes fresh sushi and delicious entree dishes such as their special of the day Baked King Salmon! Hands down the best Salmon I've ever had. It was so buttery, fresh, and flakey. I also ordered a side of sushi rice. Service was excellent! Jackie was extremely nice, tentative, helpful, and professional. She made the whole experience memorable and delightful. Ambiance is great. Open and lots of natural lighting. The location is clean and the decor is sophisticated. Highly recommend checking out the wine bar and eating there. read more

This Gelson's market in this location is my favorite. I've been to the palisades one and SM but this one is my favorite. I love the roasted chicken, and the salad bar it's my favorite and my daughters love the Sushi. I love the things they sell from flowers, chocolate to cute gift baskets. I buy the cheese's and salami. My favorite is the bakery I go just to look at the baked goods because I can't always eat sweets but when I'm in the mood I have to get some treats. It's such a nice market and people that work there are always friendly. Great location! read more

This is a really nice Gelsons on Sepulveda right in Manhattan Beach. This store has a very nice, wide selection of products. I bought premium cheeses, salami, fruits, drinks and snacks(they had the popcorn brand I like)for a total of approx. $125. Prices are higher than the big chains but worth it for the premium product selection. Highly recommended. read more

This grocery store is also a wonderful place to grab baked goods from Viktor Benês or simply lounge about, have lunch taken from the salad bar &/or get your drink on-go solo to unwind or meet up with friends at the bar (wine & other concoctions). Mainly, I was looking for Viktor Benês to grab a cup of java & maybe a pastry to just chill while waiting meet up with friends nearby. I didn't realize it was located INSIDE Gelson's. I ordered3 packages of mushrooms. The shitake and trumpet mushrooms were infested with fruit flies. I also ordered 2 lbs. of filet mignon, which should have been 4 steaks. Instead, I received one very large steak and two random pieces cut on the bias and misshapen. Needless to say, this is unacceptable. I expect quality. I didn't get it. Purchased a Princess Cake for my birthday last week at the bakery in Manhattan Beach. The cake had no whipped cream in it AT ALL. I mean NONE, ZILCH, ZERO. We eat cake maybe three times a year and we try to always go for the highest quality. This was the first time purchasing this cake at Gelson's. I grew up on Alpine Village Princess Cake but now we typically go to Coppenhagen's or Quarter Sheets since Alpine closed. To be honest the cake was otherwise great quality - preferred sweetness in the Marzipan, the custard and jam layers were ample, and the cake was moist. They also topped it with edible flowers, a nice touch. Still not a pricess cake. Not sure if it was a slip. I left a message for the bakery manager, Juan, who called me back the next day and left a message. He wasn't reachable after a couple more follow up attempts. Wasn't looking for a refund, was the cake was worth $50, maybe/maybe not. I was just looking for answers as to whether or not that is their typical recipe, sans Whipped Cream. So I can make a more informed decision for our birthday celbration next year. read more

First I like to start with the good! Pizza was excellent as well as the baked potato soup and the tomato bisque. We also bought a baguette to take home and that was also very delicious. The bran muffins are also one of my favorite there. I was also thrilled to see that they Kalana cottage cheese which I absolutely love. The Ferrara sourdough sliced was also delicious. Super disappointed because we went there to get turkey breast from the hot bar and even though it was lunch 12:15 it wasn't ready they still said it would be another 30 to 40 minutes we ended up staying in the store for that long eating some pizza and waiting but it never came out even though the hours of hot bars say they start at 10:30 AM. They did have mashed potatoes and mashed sweet potatoes but without a main dish it kind of was pointless although I did buy some mashed sweet potatoes to take home and they were very good! So instead we decided to get a rotisserie chicken which looked amazing . Sadly the chicken was inedible when we got home the breast was rubbery and so dry we ended up throwing it away which was a shame because it cost $12.99 and I've honestly had better at Ralphs. I was expecting a better quality chicken from Gelson's and was extremely disappointed. In addition we got a cherry crisp from the bakery section and something was spoiled. We got it home and it tasted like sour milk or mold. I had to spit my bite out and throw it away so we ended up throwing away $20 worth of groceries. In this time of expensive groceries, you would expect everything to be high-end and perfect or at least edible. Overall I'm hoping it was a blip in the radar. I also like that everybody there is very friendly and I will definitely be back but probably not get a chicken and maybe I will smell the pastry before I leave the store next time. read more

I've only been here twice and each time, I am greeted warmly by the employees. The bakery has amazing and delicious desserts. Their bakery staff are amazing. I ordered my wedding cake here and it came out great. The Floral Dept has a beautiful selection too. The employees seem to enjoy working there and it shows by their attitude. This review is only for the Crawfish Boil. Feed two for only $25. Easy to heat - just pour on the seafood broth and spread the garlic butter around. Pop it into your preheated oven and in 15 minutes, you get juicy shrimp and salty crawfish. The corn and veggies soak in the soup, and it's all just a great meal overall. Their $12,00 pound salad bar tastes awful. The avocado tastes like rotten lime juice, the mozzarella cheese ball has no tastes and rubbery, the fake seafood salad tastes like old fish. Notice the rotisserie chicken has no time stamped as to when it was baked , this means your chicken may be all dried up because it was baked 12 hours before you bought and and brought it home. Expensive, but worth it! I think this Gelson's is incredible. I used to go to the Gelson's in the Palisades, which was nice. But this Gelson's in MB is next level. The service here is the best service I've ever experienced at any market. My favorite thing to get here are the turkey meatballs and the tuna fish. Basically the Gelson's pre-prepared items That you can't buy at Vons or anything. The thing I really like about Gelson's is that while they have great stuff like gourmet pizza and sushi, you can also get regular things like Diet Coke or Doritos. I get really frustrated when I have to go to an all-organic place to get some meat and stuff, it then I have to drive to like Ralph's afterward because the all-organic place will not sell Oreos or other brands that my kids love. Like I said. This place is definitely more expensive that Vons or Ralph's. But I think it's worth it. read more

This might be my favorite grocery store ever. From the moment you walk in by the exotic plants for sale to an extraordinary bakery towards the end this is an expensive but worth it market. Extensive wine selections, top notch butcher and fish shops, there is even a make your own poke bar! This place has everything any of the other high quality markets have only better. Stopped for a two hour detour at their bar. The place was clean, not crowded, and server had great customer service. We had a glass of wine each and some appetizers.. Why the one star.. well. $12 for 3 mini cocunt shrimp $12 for 2 mini crab cakes ( 1 1/2 inches diameter max & 1/2 inch width) Literally, the small plate was so empty .. there even wasn't care to add some salad to make it look more full. I'm so excited to have a Gelsons in the SouthBay! Used to go to the one on Franklin in Hollywood when I lived up there (Great place to see celebrities btw) and really missed it. We were driving by and saw that it was finally open and jumped at the chance to check it out. It's still the grand opening period so there was a lot going on. They had live music playing in the front next to the cafe seating, tons of samples & a photo backdrop in the front. We had samples of rib eye steak, aged cheddar cheese, crab cakes, poke (spicey & not), fresh fruit and coconut water! Everything was so good and the sample givers were so friendly. We ate so much we changed plans about getting something to eat, which was where we were originally headed! LOL Everything in the store was so clean, pretty and fully stocked. Exactly what you expect to find in a Gelsons of course. But I can't wait to come back and actually shop! The flower section looked and smelled like a beautiful garden and the produce department looked like a tv commercial. The parking lot is medium sized and busy but we found a spot right away and the store was pretty full. As we were pulling out, I saw what looked like a valet parking lot across the street :) Gelsons is a great addition to the list of grocery store options in the SouthBay! read more

So I was seriously craving chocolate dessert after dinner the other night and we decided to come to check them out. First off this place is immaculate! We went to the bakery department, which is actually from Viktor Bene's- I've never heard of them until the other night. I got their chocolate cake with mouse and my husband got their NY Cheesecake. We had it when we got home and O-M-G! Divine!!! Enough said about this! I will come back on a later date to do my grocery shopping and update my review accordingly. Also, you can tell whenever a place is brand new because their staff is uber gracious and friendly! =) It could also be that it was 15 minutes before closing time and the place was kind of empty so the staff could clearly see and greet everyone who was there. However I will note that they do carry one of my FAVORITE exotic fruits in the world!!! Rambutans!! For those who don't know they are they, they're these red spiky looking fruits with a thick grape like center with a big seed on the inside. I encourage my fellow shoppers who can't make it to OC to purchase these fruits for about $2 a lbs than to purchase a handful of these fruits here to expand your horizons when they are available! They also have a very large pretty flower selection for some last minute dinner party touches! I'm looking forward to trying out their bar with my girlfriends! Cheers!! read more
