Big Mike's served up at 12 inch steak with Philly toppings, which is a bold way to announce, "we have assembled ingredients. The result was less a sandwich and more municipal project in bread form. Functional, loud, and not remotely interested in finesse. The stake did it duty, the topping showed up on time, and the whole thing managed to satisfy in the same way of folding chair is comfortable. Held one handed, it turned into a full contact event as the juices drip down my arm, given me the oddly delightful tickle that made a whole ordeal, feel more alive than it had any right to be. Looking it off was, inconveniently, one of the most satisfying parts. As a culinary experience, it was fine. As a performance, it was aggressively average. I've had more personality from a parking lot meter, but at least this one filled the briefly meat, cheesy, and self aware enough to know it wasn't changing my life. This is truly a working man's sandwich, on that leans in my taste category on the better and best side when it comes to Philly steak sandwiches. I like that they have all the variety of cheesesteaks you would expect to find in Philly (traditional, chicken, even pizza steak!) The sandwiches themselves were great and I like how garlicky the garlic fried can be but it's hard to keep well if it's done via delivery. Best to have it piping hot and fresh! The staff is nice and the orders came realtively quick. The prices are very reasonable. I'd want to come back to try the Italian sandwiches and other items they have! Used to work the shutdowns out at chevron in el segundo and would eat the Philly cheesesteak with grilled hot peppers and smothered in the cheese and OMFG there's never been another that's even came close to being decent compared to Big Mikes!!! We tried this sandwich shop for the first time recently at lunchtime on a weekday. We had a Combo Steak with provolone and a Combo Steak with White American cheese and sliced tomato's and peppers. Both steaks were reasonably good. Plenty of meat and cheese and properly cooked. The fries were on the soggy side. Probably better if eaten there at the store. The sandwiches were prepared on time. To be honest, I was expecting more. The restaurant is a fairly generic aesthetic with limited hours. The menu is a bit strange to parse, but I ended up ordering a combo steak with onions at the counter. The food is okay. The cheese melts well, the bread feels right and there is quite a bit of meat, but the onions, mushrooms, and beef lack depth. The beef texture is kind of like ground beef which I didn't like but as a whole the overall flavor is there. In comparison to the other cheesesteak in the area, this one has a better overall flavor but no peaks and slightly off texture. The amount of onions they give you is also slightly lacking. All in all, a disappointing representation of the cheesesteak, but a palatable one. Again, a noteworthy points is the price. The cheesesteak is pretty costly for my tastes, and the overall menu layout is slightly confusing. While walking down Main Street our plan was to eat and drink at as many local places as we had time for. First stop for grub was Big Mike's because they opened at 10:30am. We ordered a six inch steak and cheese with grilled onions and sweet peppers. We watched our sandwich being made and then it was delivered to the table steamy hot and fresh. The bun was the perfect "back east" Philly bun, soft and pillowy and it was loaded with tasty shaved steak and loads of gooey cheese. I've passed this little spot many times while I'm at work and unfortunately I've missed it due to my work hours but this day I was on a mission for something new. My taste buds where craving something than my usuals so i came to big mikes. I made it with maybe 40mins till close which worked out but first thing coming in you got a very clean restaurant with a girl in the front greeting you with a smile and excellent customer service she recommended the popular Philly cheesesteak which I turned down when I saw the steak combo lol I'm a fan of mushrooms so that was a no brainer for me. While waiting I sat down and they have a nice autograph McNabb jersey hanging on the wall nice and framed. GO BIRDS! I waited no more than 6 mins and was on my way back to work before my lunch was over. So the service was fast. I got to work eager to try my new sandwich spot so I sat and unraveled my new little treat. I took my first bite and WOW so much flavor the bread was nice and soft the meat was so flavorful the cheese added such an amazing creaminess and a wonderful earthiness from the mushrooms and let me tell you the bread soaks up all the juices from the meat it was a wonderful experience. I think next time I will definitely get the Philly cheesesteak or even the combo with the bell peppers and the onions because I feel like it was missing that freshness and crunch from the veggies I give my experience a 8/10 just because I missed out on those sandwich toppings which would have definitely elevated my experience! Dined in on 1/15/24. Big Mike's is one of our favorite places to eat when we are in El Segundo. Most especially after playing volleyball at ES park. The service is always friendly. The ambiance is relaxing and clean. We always order the Philly cheesesteak. Everything is great. The only suggestion would be to make the cheesesteak a little more tasty. It lacked flavor but could be just yesterday. We did enjoy our meals. The fries were fresh. It was so good that we ended up ordering 2 orders of fries. The onion rings were also good, crispy and fresh. The bread is soft. Love how they pack up the sandwiches. Prices are reasonable as well. Located on Main Street and offers parking in the back. A friend of mine suggested Big Mike's to me the next time I visit Los Angeles (I live in Florida). Today, I was back in the area and I decided to give it a try. And am I glad I did! First, the woman who took my order could not have been sweeter. They were pretty busy and it was after lunch time so I'm pretty sure she had been working hard throughout, but she maintained a very pleasant demeanor and really made an excellent first impression. This is a sandwich shop, with quite a few options, and I'm not great at making decisions but since I'm being forced to have vegan for dinner, I decided meat would be a good choice for lunch. I went with an Italian sub with provolone cheese, sweet peppers, tomatoes, oil and vinegar. Nothing terribly complicated, but quite delicious if done right. Well, they did it right. The sandwich was amazing. They use fresh rolls to make it, which is a huge plus. And they made it exactly as I ordered it. I'm going to be in town for a few more days so I'm going to go again and try their Philly cheesesteak. I lived in Philadelphia when I was in college so I know what they're supposed to taste like. If today's experience is any indication, I'm sure they'll come through with flying colors. read more

At $10.95 for a 12" sandwich and $2.99 for some fries, the value is hard to beat. The sandwich was loaded with meat and mushrooms and peppers. I also love how they don't charge extra for toppings! The staff were super friendly. My only complaints are that the sandwich filling was slightly under seasoned and that some of the workers cooking were new and food took a while to come out. This place is awesome!! I travel through El Segundo frequently during the month, and this is my main stop for lunch! Never heard of it and a co-worker suggested it!! Sandwiches here ROCK, any of them!! I typically will have the turkey and cheese, but have also ordered the hot sandwiches as well!! Fries are a delicious complement to round out your meal. My son recently flew into town from NYC, and I had time to pick up some sandwiches before his flight arrived. I knew he'd be hungry upon arrival and scored him a hot sandwich for the drive home. If you're looking for a decent sub in the El Segundo area, this is a good spot. I can't comment on their garlic fries, cause I got there 20 min before closing and they had already turned off the fryers. I guess make sure to come earlier if you want any of their fried foods. It's nice that they have a parking lot, as well as some street parking. It's a basic mom & pop kinda shop with some patio seating as well. From the decor, I assume that it's a staple of the local community with signed jerseys and memorabilia. The food was quick, delicious, and moderately priced. In my opinion, the bread for my cold sub was a little too hard and the bread for my cheese steak was a little too soft (but some people might like it that way). Overall, if I was in the mood for a sandwich and in the area, I'd probably come back here. read more

This is my favorite sub chain out there! The sub rolls are super soft with a nice bite. The hot veggie sub I get is PHENOMENAL. You never miss the meat with the stir fried veggies and you can have both sweet and hot peppers to offset them. I usually have them cook the tomatoes in there too, all grilled then topped with cheese that makes a veggie-cheese melted extravaganza dumped into the roll. Love it with pickles too. My husband always gets hot Italian roast beef or the Chicken cheese with peppers. I've never had a bad bite at this spot. Blows Quiznos, Capriottis, Subway, Jersey Mike's out of the water! I haven't had this hot veggie sub since I used to live in MASS and got one at D'Angelos. read more

I was in the mood for a Philly steak sammich. So, off to Big Mike's I went! There's a private parking lot situated next to them. For to go or pick up orders - and if you're lucky enough - you might score one of two 20 minutes only parking right up front. Street parking also available. Only a couple of tables occupied when I walked in. Ordered the regular mushroom steak with grilled onions, sweet peppers and lettuce. Cashier asked if I wanted the cheese. I replied with a polite, "No." I know, I should have added cheese, but I wanted to try the beef in its authenticity. Common sense dictates the cheese would surely alter its true flavor... ... AAAANNNNDDDD I shoulda added some dang cheese. The beef was juicy, I'll give 'em that, but it fell short with seasoning. It was genuinely lacking it; I couldn't taste even the tiniest hint! I had to sprinkle my own salt and pepper with each bite. The mushrooms could have used a bit more sautéing - that, too, was tasteless. Grilled onions?! Barely there. The only true flavor that came off of anything was the good level of sweet off the sweet peppers. This sandwich needs PLENTY of work: lots and LOTS of work. Not worth the 7 and change. It absolutely missed the spot - the disappointment left me hungry still. But I won't let this experience deter me from coming back. There are a few other things on their menu I would like to try. I just need to steer away from this particular sandwich. Might be awhile, though. This kind of food mood doesn't occur too often. read more

You'll most definitely get your money's worth with the cheese steaks here. They literally stuff it with so much that there's literally no way the meat doesn't fall out of the bun. I usually order the combo steak 6 inch with everything on it. No way possible I'm finishing a foot long of that without passing out haha. Had their garlic fries last time too. Those are solid, not the best I've ever had but they're still better than some drab tasting garlic fries I've had (Gilroy supplies NorCal with the best garlic fries so I'm biased). I keep coming back cuz it's cooked well and fairly priced. The bun bread they use is okay. If it was a little thicker I supposed it'd be perfect just to hold all the grub inside it. The only other gripe I got is the cashier chick, she always looking like she be having a bad day or just hates everybody, I can't tell but damn, smile and greet a customer for once yo. read more
