Another horrible time at the Vons in Hermosa beach. 1line open at 10:30 on a Friday morning. They opened another one but didn't turn on the light so no one knew it was open. Then we were told by the manager to go to that line but the closed sign was up. I didn't trust them. Finally they opened a different line, no money in the till, cashier couldn't log in, etc. The usual crap service. And no one helping the cashier fix the situation. Barbara tried very hard to be efficient. This store was a great one years ago. I primarily shop at Trader Joe's now because this kind of stuff doesn't happen there and their prices are better. I only go to vons when I need something TJs doesn't have. read more

Wanted to give a shout out to Dave in the meat department at Von 's Hermosa Beach. Dave is very busy, however he always takes the time to assist me with my crazy requests. If he is unable to help at the moment, he goes over and beyond to make sure that if he is able to obtain what you need for a special or ordinary meal, he will go out of his way to help. At this Vons today, Jan. 17 at around 4:15 pm, the Mask sign (8.5 x 11) is placed behind other merchandise and very very hard to see. There are multiple customers walking inside without masks (2 teenagers, a man at the self check out, 1 walking in) or with masks below the nose (2 men at register). Staff member did not tell customers to put the masks on or wear them properly even after being told about that. Covid infection is surging at alarming rates at this moment and we need everyone, especially grocery stores, to comply with laws and regulations to lower risks and help ensure safety for others. read more

This review goes specifically to the Bakery department at this Von's. Over the weekend I placed an order for a custom made cake for a party I threw. Not only did they have a custom cake done in less than 24 hours, but the design exceeded my expectations (I asked for pink ballerina pointe shoes and snowflakes for a "Nutcracker-esque" theme!) and it turned out beautifully!!! The cake tasted great too and everyone at the party really enjoyed it. Whomever the cake artist is at Von's did an amazing job. The man who took my order was very nice too. This is the 2nd custom cake that's been ordered from them and they've hit the mark each time. And - the prices are really great. They'll be my go to for any future cake orders. read more

There's a reason there are only 2.5 stars. I went in on a Friday to pick up a corsage I ordered 4 days earlier. She told me they weren't taking any corsage orders...I wasn't placing an order, picking up!!! Apparently someone quit, the only person who could create a corsage so they said basically oh well. The non-self-serve checkout line is manned by an elderly fellow who is wearing rubber gloves . . . . . . which was all fine and well, until he took a tissue and began wiping his nose (including digging something out, if you know what I mean), then returned to handling customer's purchases without having removed his gloves, washed his hands, then donned a new pair of gloves. Most days at Vons I use the self checkout. Today I was purchasing alcohol so needed to go through the cashiers. I understand we all have bad days, but Barbara was rude to the two guests in front of me and myself. She kept rolling her eyes and had no patience. With her very sweet and kind bagger. Maybe she was having an off day, however she seemed more than annoyed that she had to come to work today. Barbara, I hope you have a better day tomorrow. I love Vons because it's the Safeway brand in SoCal. Their deli is awesome with plenty of fresh sandwich selections, hot food, chilled prepared dishes that just require microwaving, plenty of fresh fruit bowls for lunch/snacking, and several options at the bakery of single piece cakes/deserts. The only reason I give 3 stars is because union store employees tend not be very friendly. For example, I'm the first to say "hello" or "good morning," and they just stare at back with no regard. I also have to tell them several times I want a plastic bag - not paper. I came in here a few times while staying at the Hampton across the street for a week. The overall store lighting and ambiance is very welcoming and classy. Lotto is offered up front. I love supporting union employees, but many need to work on service skills. read more

This Vons needs new management especially in the produce department. Not only is the quality of fruit sub par when compared to other grocery stores in the SouthBay, but other Vons stores in SoCal -- including Big Bear which is regularly regarded as the worst Vons in California. Yet in terms of produce quality Big Bear is twice as good. Examples of regularly bad produce include moldy berries (especially more expensive organic varieties), tasteless and dried out mandarins, rotten apples, and constant unripe melons. Despite this store being three blocks from my house and halfway decent in sales, I just won't continue to buy any produce from here. read more

This is a good VONS location, generally, store (#2110) @ 715 Pier Ave. There's a spacious parking lot with a CVS and a few restaurants incl. a Jamba Juice and a Wells Fargo Bank too. The only criticism I have of most supermarkets, not just Von's is the growing trend to entice, suggest and somewhat force shoppers to buy more quantity in order to get the price break discount. I really don't need 4 x 12 packs of soda pop. I sure would just like to buy 1. I don't need 10 x of anything really, and would love to just buy one. If I wanted bulk, I'd go to Costco or Sam's Club. There's a reason why I shop at supermarkets. Before (and it still exists), prices would be market as 4 / $8.00 and they'd prorate the purchase, so 1 would be $2; and 2 would be $2 each = $4, etc. No obligation to buy more than 1. Now you see signs saying "MUST BUY" as the disclaimer to the discount. It's tougher, especially for single folks, couples or small families as well as those who don't have fridge / freezer / storage space as well as tighter budgets, and most importantly those who can't use or go through fast enough, huge quantities. Also, now Von's (part of the Safeway family) has some new "APP" (I think it's called "Just for U") instant coupon adding to the confusion to get lower price discounts based on logging in and using your phone, yet another way to access your personal data and send you offers. I remember when there were just regular coupons, then "double coupon values" then later on the whole free membership plastic card promotions (I know Albertsons got rid of that system) using phone numbers and email address, grocery shopping continues to be complicated as stores try to increase their AOV (average order value) of their shoppers to buy more as well as to track their purchases and build their database with customer/consumer behavior profiles. Parking is fairly easy here and this location is in the South Bay Beach Cities area, so is sort of a magnet to where the young beautiful people shop as well. I have a sense this could be a decent secret 'lil pick-up venue for initiating conversations in the isles and sparking potential dating opportunities. read more

Not a fan of this store. The people that work here are great, but it's always so difficult to find an employee to ask where a product is. Also, the location of some of the isles dont make sense at all, which makes it hard to find things. The zip lock bags and aluminum foil are next to the frozen stuff rather than the toiletries and other house items. So stupid. My biggest complaint is the meat selection and prices. Ralphs has a way bigger meat and fish selection with much better prices. You can't find chicken or meat for less than $10. I have started to drive farther to go to Ralphs than go to this Vons which I live next to. Also, I have to bag my groceries most of the time. Nobody likes to do that. read more

A Vons is a Vons....shelves loaded, fantastic floral department and a wine aisle that includes varietals sold only in wine stores, neat! This store isn't as spacious as my local store, then again real estate costs here are likely double but I never have trouble finding what I need, though I admit it does take me longer to find things simple because the store layout is a little different. The meat department always has a premium selection; lobsters, scallops, prime beef, which is nice when I'm in the area and can get what I need here and not have to detour to WF or BF. Lots of parking but it does get busy, great people watching too. read more

I have purchased the absolute worst steaks in my life at vons hermosa lately... seemingly good looking on the surface, they have the worst gristle i have ever experienced. I buy NY Strip steaks.... It has forced me to go to Ralphs, where there are no quality issues.... it's a shame really... the beef is marked "USDA Choice" and at the very least this is misleading and at the worst deliberate lies.. read more

I do love shopping at this Von's. They always have a really nice fresh seafood and meat selection. It's the only store in this area that carries my favorite (branzino!) on a regular basis. The guys that work at the seafood & meat counters are always available and willing to help me find exactly what I need. The wine aisle is awesome. They have a wide selection of brands, and always offer a discount on multiple bottles. They also carry all of the non-dairy alternatives - milk, coffee creamer, yogurt & cream cheese, that I rely on. read more

I shop often at three Von's grocery stores. I like the bakery & florist at Hermosa Beach,CA. One of the staff members, Karla C. is an asset to this Von's. She has insight, when ordering for a party or family get-together. Her knowledge and talent is above par, and current. From fried chicken to chocolate custard eclairs, and she has in-depth knowledge of Types of Wine and beverages to serve, for any occasion. This place deserves 1 star based on the quality of their food. A few weeks ago I bought some Brussels Sprouts, cut them open, and 50 little worms started crawling out of the food, it was disgusting. Several times a month I'll find produce on their shelves way past the sell by date or fruit with mold on it. I've told management a few times but no one seems to care. I've never received a refund on the bad food. Today I went and bought coleslaw from the deli, and it was so sour and disgusting I threw it away after 2 bites. Y'all should train your employees to not accuse people of things with no proof. The other day I ran in to grab a couple things. Probably 4 registers open. Nobody in line, so I ducked under the rope to go to the open register closest to me. The girl at the register gave me the absolute dirtiest look, and asked me why I was cutting. To which I responded, I didn't cut, there is nobody in line. She told me I cut 4 people. I looked back again and there was still nobody there, so I told her she was free to check. If I could give a 0 star review I would. My husband and I were at the union bank on pier and decided to go to Vons to buy toilet paper instead of dealing with the lines at Costco. We each grabbed 1 pack and stood in line. One was for our home and the other for our business. While we stood in line, the store director Ian Mooney came up to us and told us that there was a limit of 1. This is how the conversation proceeded. Me: Yes, we are aware of that, there are two of us Ian Mooney: Are you together? Me: Yes, we are Ian Mooney: Well you can only buy one Me: Oh okay, we'll put one back Ian Mooney: I'll be watching to make sure Me to my husband: let's just leave I am not giving my money to this store. Ian Mooney was so rude and loud. He embarrassed us in front of a lot of other customers. We walked out and I said to my husband you know his attitude was inappropriate and I want his name so I can call Corporate. We walked back in and asked him for his name, I read his name tag out loud and he said why do you need my name? I said because you were rude to us. He said " I'm not rude, bye have a nice day". Instead of being professional he dismissed us in a demeaning manner. I'm not the one to normally pull the race card but out of 20+ customers in line we were the only ones targeted. Clean , well stocked average super market. They have a very nice fresh flower section. Also seasonal plans and decorations. I like waking inside during the fall/wonder season. I'm the scent is of cinnamon and pine as you walk through their doors! Gets me in the holiday spirit. Ready to cook and make. Theres an on site Starbucks as well. Perfect when I need a caffeine boost. Parking is ample and I can always find exactly what I'm looking for as far as groceries. P.S. This Vons in particular never quite delivers in the way of customer service. Never enough lines open and the staff is underwhelming. But... today took the cake. Guille ("supervisor"!!!) took over my line as another checker went on break. She typed in her numbers to work the register. She did not look at me, greet me, even ask for my club card (I had to ask if she could scan it!), or thank me. Guille didn't even have the decency to hand me my receipt at the end of the transaction.... she laid it on the counter for me to pick up. I mean!! I understand that my little two-item purchase wasn't a big deal and that I was wearing sweats to the store that day. Not the most glamorous. I like this market. It's got everything and it's all good. Too bad it's kind of outta of the way from where I live. Manhattan's is closer, but too small. Still, I'll keep coming back, because it's got a lot of good stuff, sometimes can be bit confusing like the Ralph's on Sepulveda (Manhattan), because they are both humongous stores. But also realizing that the Ralph's that was nearby had closed recently, might explain why it's always busy. Customer service is good, people don't bother me (Lol - thank you!)
