The good: The cakes looked good and were great prices at around $20-30. They had napoleans and different flavored tres leches cake including a pistachio one which I've never seen elsewhere. There were lots of inflated balloon options. They had orchids and bouquets as well. The bad: A lot of the bouquets were slightly wilted. It's a big market but not as big as a lot of other Mexican grocery stores. They didn't have tropical fruits that I was hoping to find. The cash register moved slowly and we weren't sure why. The interesting: We got farmers cheese here for around $5. They had the classic star-shaped pinatas. They also sold mini cacti and edible cactus. read more

This is for a week day review. The fruit and vegetables are very fresh. I bought 3 large cucumbers for $0.99. Wow a great deal. During busy hours, most of the check-out lanes are open. There is a wall full of different Mexican breads for very cheap. I definitely will want to visit this market at least once a week. Special items are on sale on Weds. Produce...a lot of produce, sometimes you have to be selective, but the prices are unbeatable. I make a lot of soups, salsas and margaritas...you can't find better prices on cilantro, chiles, onions, carrots or limes. Oh my, the limes! Two pounds for .99cents, anywhere else they are .30-.40 cents each! I have lemon trees, I never need lemons, but if I did, the prices here are fantastic. Meat is decent, though it isn't Prime and probably not Choice either, but as an ingredient in slow cooker meals, soups, tamales, the beef and chicken prices here are really good. Junk food like cereal, sweets, soda, cookies are quite expensive as is alcohol (beer and liquor). I found that odd, but I can conclude why that is. Service isn't extraordinary, but it is passable. Bag your own groceries. Parking can be a bear, but go early (before 9am) for best parking, fresh breads and produce. read more

El Super is a great Latin / Hispanic ethnic supermarket whose prices are more than competitive to the mainstream stores like Von's, Ralph's, Pavillions, Albertson's, Sprouts, Whole Foods, Gelson's, Bristol Farms, Trader Joes, and the like. I'd say it's comparable to the Asian supermarkets like 99 Ranch or the other Mexican supermarkets, and even a Food 4 Less, in that the freshness is good, quality is on par with their peers and pricing is usually below the average. An example is/was, Avocados were on sale at Sprouts 3 for $1; and at El Super they are 5 for $1, albeit maybe one can say they might be a little smaller (but I don't think so), the prices are still always a bargain compared to their counterparts in the mainstream. I'd come here for the fresh fruit and vegetables without a doubt. With that, I endorse and support as well as recommend El Super. Parking in the lot is easy too. It's in a safe area. read more

Deals! What amazing deals! My preconceived notion of giant Mexican supermarkets was a large room with piles of moldy crap. Well maybe not that bad, but last time I went to one, it was worse than a ghetto Food-4-Less. Valu Plus was a clean and well organized mecca of insanely cheap produce and meats. Almost all the veggies were 99c for a few pounds! And they had a couple dozen varieties that I have never even heard of. It was a foodies wet dream. We easily got 100% more food (by weight) than at TJs for the same price. The highlight of the trip was my main meat buy. I had this craving for some tongue for a couple weeks and when I saw giant beef tongues in the meat counter I couldn't resist. I asked for a pound of tripe and a pound of tongue. To my dismay, they either don't cut up the tongues for you, or they didn't understand my request. We cruised in here a week ago looking for reasonable priced veggies and we found them. My friend was very pleased and found everything that he was looking for and more. They have a big meat department but I'm not going to lie...it smells. I'm not sure why theirs is so smelly but it is so I pass by it VERY quickly! The frozen food selection leaves something to be desired considering they don't really have one and I was looking for Cool Whip and they don't carry it!!! They do have a Coinstar however and I cashed in more than $100 bucks in change :o) Overall, it's a good neighborhood market and they have some good deals. Where do I begin. This store is not well managed. I'm surprised they haven't been shut down. Most of the produce are going bad. Tomatoes rotten, lettuce wilted. This is my go to grocery store because they offer the best prices on everything. I started meal prepping last year and I quickly learned that this location provides everything I need at affordable prices, especially the meat! I prefer to drive the extra 15 minutes away from my house to come here because the Ralphs across the street from me is so expensive. If I continued to buy a weeks supply of chicken from Ralphs, it would cost about 10-12 dollars on the meat alone. But at El Super, I am able to prepare 7-8 meals, with chicken, baby carrot, broccoli, and sweet potatoes for under 15 dollars. This place is also great for barbecues. The carnicera here has marinated meats and a variety of things not available at many other big name grocery stores. It can get busy here, so plan ahead. Try to go during the day if you can. Had a horrible experience this evening at your Hawthorne Blvd location in the meat department. The one female worker with glasses would not acknowledge my grandmother's nor my presence until she felt she was ready to. It was a slow move to get any of the meats we requested. We inquired concerning shrimp and she told us we can get the ones we wanted from the boxes in front of the seafood area. While looking through the available boxes, two of them were open. While moving them, the tops opened and she ran over yelling at my grandma that we opened the plastic wrappings. She proceeded to argue with my grandma and I jumped in to de-escalate. I asked her to return to her area so that we didn't have a tit-for-tat. She then made a homophobic remark about me. I asked for her name and she said her name was "the one i was given" and refused to call the manager. Never have I ever encountered an unpleasant attendant at this location until today. A report was made to the manager but I don't know what came about it because she walked past me as we were leaving. read more

This is where I go to get my produce. I used to go to Trader Joes and Walmart Grocery (on Hawthorne), and even tried to shop the sales/specials at conventional large chain grocers like Ralphs, but El Super is by FAR the best value. Quality is perfectly acceptable, and the prices are shocking. I've regularly gotten broccoli at 0.99 for 2-3 lbs, apples at 0.99 for 2 lbs, cucumbers at 0.99 for 6, and small haas avocados at 0.99 for 6. I also can never make it out of there without buying some pan dulces... 0.99 for 3 and I love that ish. Yes the lines are long and slower than other grocery stores, but the satisfaction of getting that under-$20 receipt (when it would be $40+ at other stores) is WORTH the wait. Northgate on Rosecrans is similar, but I've consistently found El Super to have better produce prices. And while Northgate has better hot/prepared food, El Super's bakery section is better...they get their tres leches from El Molino bakery (the best!), which is across the shared parking lot. read more

Of course, I was like cool what a steal, and then when I was ready to check out I saw this humengous line like 8-10 ppl waiting and only 2 cashiers. CHEAP PRICES! I used to frequent this place, even when it was still Valu+ (They just changed ownership, so I'm assuming they didn't really intend to change the service). The items didn't really change significantly -- they still sell groceries, obviously. But the way they laid out the items are completely different. And to be honest, I like the newer layout better. When it was still Valu +, they had an IKEA layout going on. You know, the type of layout that makes you go through EVERY SINGLE DAMN AISLE which makes you pick up an item or two that you don't need anyway. I used to go there for produce, and in order for me to check out after picking up my stuff, I have to go through every single aisle to get to the registers. Now, they have a more open layout, where you could just go straight to the produce area without having to go through the meat department or the cold cuts, etc. This isn't a place for super high quality food. You have Whole Foods, Sprouts, or Trader Joes for that. But if you're looking for ways to save in a couple of items that you need in the pantry and crisper, definitely check this place out. What can I say I love cooking! And when your on a tight budget you look for the lowest but quality prices. If you want the fresher fruits and veggies go on Wednesday!! Those are when they have special prices (even lower then the rest of the week or weekends), and they change out the old with new. One thing make sure that you have nothing to do for about an hour because there are HUGE lines and it is PACKED! If your like me I go early in the morning, about 9am and it isn't that bad... I don't buy meats or any frozen produced so I don't know about that.. I buy two weeks worth of veggies and fruits and I spend approximately 50 - 60 bucks on the days there ISNT specials. I was disappointed when I walked into this store, I thought it was going to be like Northgate Gonzales but I was wrong. The size alone was smaller than what it looks like from the out side the cleanliness is below average from other nearby grocery stores in the area and the products in store are limited compared to other stores. My main focus as a pet owner was the price of pet food and it was limited in selection and 20 cents more than Vons, Northgate Gonzalez, and Food 4 Less. 20 cents may not seem much but when you're on a limited budget or that's the only store in your area than that adds up over time. This is one cool ethnic market. Since this market is geared toward hispanic clientele, part of the produce selection is leaning to please the targeted customers. They have really CHEAP and very FRESH produce. The selection for the fruits is really good. But there are plenty of basic veggies like the lettuce, tomato, carrots and such just like the major chained markets. They also have a pretty decent meat department as well. I stopped going to the major supermarket chain stores since I found this place. The stuff that I can't find here, I'd get them at Costco. first off, i'm writing this about the location on Inglewood in Culver City It's about a block South of Culver Blvd. It's a chain so I'm sure the Lawndale one is similar. This place rocks!!!! The V+ is a large Latino Market with a generous deli and fresh bakery inside. This ain't no overpriced yuppie market bs folks. This is legit Mexican market in LA which is moving tons of fresh produce and chiles and is muy freakn cool. The produce here is CHEAP and FRESH. Red peppers for green pepper prices, nice papayas and pineapples. They even have fresh cactus and a couple fruits I couldn't i.d. The entire produce sectionis the kind of place that's makes you despise Whole Foods all over again as you grab five nice lookin' japanese eggplants for a buck. My fave part f the place is the bakery which makes fresh tortillias AND fresh masa togo along with a host of MExican ckaes, breads and sweethings which I am not that into. The deli also deep frys tortillias for fresh bags of chips which is pretty fun to watch. I love big thick chips with some flavor. They're a bit on the oily side but sooo good. I haven't tried the prepared masa but all the Mexican grandmothers were buying it when I was there and they know what's up. I am confident that it's very good. The deli ladles authentic salsa's to go from these huge bins. Didn't try the gaucamole salsa. The verde's good, the rojo's awesome and the smoky one... well that one straightup destroyed me -- all to the amusement of Pablo, aka dude who gave me a sample. Damn, that salsa must be made from 500 habaneros and one onion. Oi, the pain! I hesitate to tell people about this place because I'd hate to come back and have like 50 white Venice hipsters (like myself) up in there. But I am writing for the foodies, to all you cooks out there like myself who live for a market which will sell you a very fresh, well-trimmed 8.7 lb Pork Picnic Shoulder for $8.
