I am not personally a fan of Korean fried chicken (I know I know, don't attack me) but since I'm Korean, I have to get some once in a while! I've been to other Vons Chicken locations so I was excited to see this new shop although I was sad that the old tofu house closed down. I came in on a Monday evening and there was surprisingly a lot of tables filled. We ordered a half order and a full order of chicken. The menu is big which is AMAZING. I love having variety so I'm glad they didn't just have a couple options. The chicken overall was very good. Super crispy but juicy in the inside. Portions and pricing is very fair. The only downside was it did take a while for the chicken to come out. It took about 20 minutes for the half order and 30 minute for the full but at the end of the day, this chicken is baked/fried so of course it's going to take a while and this place is still new so I can't blame them. Just keep this in mind when going in and please be patient since they still are a new business trying to probably find a good system when making lots of orders. I couldn't really distinguish any honey flavor (though it was sweet from the sugar) or butter flavor for that matter. In fact, I feel like I could have mistaken more hints of honey and butter w the garlic than honey butter. Since garlic was more of a moist wet sauce that still had an added layer of crispy texture to it, I guess I expected the same, but it was basically a dry "seasoning" of sugar and lacked character and flavor. This place is located right next to chicken on fire. Decided to give it a try since chicken on fire closed earlier for dine in. I thought the flavors were very different, but still very tasty! I liked the yang nyum chicken wings more than the crispy chicken... it kind of reminded me of Chinese sweet and sour pork. Some of the chicken was rather dry though... maybe just get wings instead of a combo For the price... I wish the orders came with rice because in my opinion, $17 per plate was expensive... If you are interested in authentic spicy Korean rice cakes known as Tteokbokki I do NOT recommend these. They're barely sweet and hardly spicy. Also, the texture is SO bad. They taste as if they've been frozen several times and unthawed. Nobody in our house could eat more than a single bite. Really low quality. The kimchi fried rice was a similar experience to the rice cakes but if I had to choose between the two, I'd go for the kimchi fried rice without question. I was ordering for 3 people, so I got a full sized order of "Chrispy Garlic Chicken" and did a combo of drumsticks and wings ($30.58 total with tax). These are really crispy and juicy chicken. We ordered take-out and when we got home, they were still crispy! I saw a review earlier about someone nabbing this after watching a Korean drama. With the pandemic in full swing, I found myself in a similar situation, and craved the famed KFC (Korean Fried Chicken), where chicken and beer is conspicuously showcased in every K-Drama I've watched. I found myself here every couple of days just to try out another flavor, and to make sure it wasn't a one-off. Consistency is important, and it succeeded. Chicken comes with both coleslaw and pickled daikon. So far I've tried: 1) Crunch Fried Chicken: get this if you want a light texture and a taste that emphasizes the chicken more than the batter. This is likely the chicken with the least amount of calories of the bunch, and is my second favorite item at Vons. 2) Crispy Fried Chicken (Spicy): this also comes mild, but if there's one area of criticism I have for Vons is that the spicy variant isn't spicy at all -- merely a touch of heat. I wished it was spicier, and "saucier", but probably something I can expect with Yangyum (haven't tried this one yet, but judging by the redness, I think it may be heavier than what I'm looking for, but next on my list to try). Overall, this is thicker, flakier, browner, and "heavier" than its crunchy cousin. It has great flavor and is my favorite of the ones I've tried. 3) Crispy Garlic Chicken. Same great taste but with garlic added to batter. It's not overly garlicky. One can call this "fried chicken with aromas of garlic" and it would capture the essence well. 4) Crispy Fried with Honey Butter Chicken. This one was too sweet for me. The honey and the butter had a unique great taste, but the ratio misses the mark for me. My wife seems to like it though. 5) Rice cake (spicy). Because I had takeout, the flavor had a taste of "would be incredible 20 mins ago" due to the hints of light crispiness that became soft. Even then, this was pleasantly chewy and had great spice! When the pandemic is over, I'll have to dine in to really enjoy this one. How does Vons fare to other places like Chicken on Fire (down the street) or Bonchon (next city over)? - The oil used is FRESH. Chicken on Fire, while delicious and flavorful, always felt like the oil has been sitting out and stale for a long time. This is unfortunately a regular occurrence for most fried chicken places I go to, and it leaves my body feeling pretty crappy for a few days and wanting to avoid fried chicken for a couple of weeks. With Vons, it's done in a way where it's something I can regularly eat if my diet allows (it doesn't). - Compared to Bonchon, the chicken at Vons actually tastes like chicken: juicy, steamy, plumpy, and a perfect batter-to-meat ratio. Bonchon's was acceptable for me, but let's face it, the chicken typically tastes old and a bit artificial. It's like comparing McDonald's Big Mac patty to Five Guy's hamburger patty -- both are tasty and acceptable in their own right, but only one tastes like real meat. For beer pairing, I like this with a premium lager or any pilsner. This cuts through the fat, cleanse your palate, complements the chicken flavor, and makes it easy to enjoy more of either. And as much as I love IPAs, they typically tend to trounce and clash with the chicken flavor. Lastly, what's amazing is I've gotten all of these as TAKEOUT and it still tastes really crispy and delicious even after driving 20-some-odd minutes home. I can only imagine how good this would taste if I was able to dine-in and have it served fresh. This is an easy favorite and is now my current go-to. Both items emphasize crispy on the menu, but after they put on the sauce they are just soggy pieces of chicken. The flavor on the Yang Nyum chicken was good but we ordered spicy and it wasn't. It was just really sweet and a little spicy. I thought the garlic chicken would be crispy but it was also soggy. I guess they put some kind of sauce on this too and made the chicken very wet. A little odd that it is a few businesses down from chicken on fire. You definitely get a lot more chicken on their half orders versus the lunch special but for the price of the lunch specials (under $10), which also comes with rice, you can't beat it. They also do Korean fired chicken. I would rate both to be on par. However Chicken on Fire does have more sauce on their check, which I prefer. It's like half and half. Some of the fried chicken gets flavored with powder. Once when I ordered the sweet cheddar chicken, the powder only came on the chicken that was in the top of the container and the rest of the chicken underneath barely had any of the flavoring so that was really annoying cuz we had to divide it so that everyone had atleast chicken with the flavoring on it. Next time I came in I asked them to season all the chicken with the flavoring because of that issue, which they did, but still I shouldn't have to ask since it's the one thing they do.
