Every yelp starts with "If I could give this 0 stars I would" and "I will never rent from this company again" But I mean it fully. I have lived in the Sonja Apartment Complex for two months now and am completely regretting the decision to sign a lease with this company. Let's start at the very beginning: The tour. My roommates and I were in a rush to find housing for this year. We found to Sonja online and we decided that we would take a tour. We scheduled an appointment, but when we showed up the management said that they wrote down the wrong time and date. So we rescheduled. When we arrived again, we were buzzed in, but not told where to go. A tenant eventually helped us get to the management's apartment. We were brought into an apartment and my roommate and I took a quick look around. I asked simple questions like "how much is rent" "what is included" and to every question I got "I'm not sure". This should have been a big red flag, but we just decided to sign anyway. The lease signing. I should have brought a parent with me, the management had no clue what any of the terms of the lease were. Again, this should have been another red flag for me but we went with it anyway. Not only is this incredibly dangerous, legally, for the management to not understand the terms on the lease, but dangerous for the renter as well. We were never given a copy of our lease and yet to receive it to this day. On September 4th was key pick up day. My mother and I arrived to pick up the key to find that the check I had written for the security deposit was the incorrect amount. A dollar over. I had called and checked the amount before sending the check, but they told me the wrong amount. We got that sorted pretty quickly, but then I walked into a mess of an apartment. First. We didn't have blinds, which we were told was included with the apartment. The front two bedrooms overlook the courtyard of the Sonja, so clearly that was not going to be good. We had lights out, our garbage disposal was not working and was causing the dishwasher to drain into the sink and flood it. We found that the port socket to plug for the television and ethernet line in the living room was dead and best of all, the bathroom door would not shut without a lot of force. All of these issues were addressed with management within the hour of getting the keys. A week after key pick up, three workmen came in to do a check over of the apartment but didn't fix anything but were aware of what needed to be done. Our sink overflowed to the point that it was making the entire apartment smell and was giving all three of us headaches. The bathroom door was getting even more difficult to close. We didn't have a way to get Comcast to come in and set up a box for us because of the dead port. But it gets better. The Sonja advertises itself to be safe and secure, but this is just false security. I had repeatedly tried to get a parking spot in the "secure parking lot" but management claimed that they lost the papers for it and told me to park outside. Subsequently, my car was broken into and over $350 was taken. My glove box lock had been broken, which is where valuable parts to the car were taken. I reported it to management immediately and was told to park in their space until they could find the paper, which they eventually did and I got a permanent space. A few weeks later my car was broken into again, nothing was taken, but it took a lot of teeth pulling to get some information from Von Klein themselves to see if security tapes could be pulled. Four other cars have been broken into, that I know of, so it's very clear that this whole secure parking garage thing is just a lie. In October, we eventually got our garbage disposal working and our bathroom door to close, but that TV port is going to get interesting. I was beginning to get tired of having to wait until the next day to catch up on Grey's Anatomy, so I had my mother call Von Klein to see what is going on with this TV port. They filed a work request and we didn't have anyone come to even look at it. So I sent an email to Von Klein stating that they had until the end of the week to fix this issue or we would hire someone to do it ourselves and expect the total of the cost of repairs to be removed from rent. This is where it got ugly. I got an angry phone call from a lady named Cindy who claimed that it was Comcasts issue, not theirs. Funny enough, I had already had a conversation with Comcast and they confirmed that they do not deal with wiring. I had my father call, who is an engineer with an electrical background who also looked at the port himself at move in. He talked with Von Klein and Cindy was incredly rude and HUNG UP on my dad. I will be calling later today to file a formal complaint with the company over this and will be expecting an answer to this. Bottom line.
