VB opener almost four years ago, ashamedly last night was my first actual meal there and This spot is not hyped up enough and I don't know why. The food is excellent, diverse and interesting. The beer, wine, spirits and cocktails are incredibly curated and on point with the concept. The staff is well versed in the menu and helpful in guiding your experience. The vibes are homey, warm and inviting. It was just all in all a very enjoyable experience. Met up with friends and local business partners for dinner and four of us enjoyed the Wurst plate, curry fries, Holstein schnitzel, wood fired pork steak, house pickles and the grilled cabbage. The fries were perfect, fried to a nice crisp and dusty heavily with a delicious curry powder, served with curry ketchup and a mayo based sauce. The pork steak was also a stunner. A huge pork blade steak cooked slowly on the wood fire outside before being perfectly seared and served in a cast iron skillet with a horseradish sauce. Juicy. Perfect medium temp. Crusty exterior. Well seasoned and succulent. The Wurst was a little disappointing. The sausages are made in house but what we got seemed like it had been sitting after cooking for some time. The skin was shriveled and a bit dry instead of snappy. Inside the sausages were nice and moist but it was just a little disappointing. I tried the Otto's Picon and it was a spiced up version of the classic that I enjoyed very much. The cardamom really came through and accented the herbal notes in the traditional version. I also tried a 5yr German rye whiskey that I'll be hunting down now, as well as a Swedish single malt finished in Sherry. There were several other whiskies of interest on the menu but I am saving those for another visit! read more

Was so excited to find an authentic German beer garden in Reno, but unfortunately, this spot fell a bit short of my expectations. This spot definitely feels a bit more upscale than your typical beer garden, with a lovely indoor bar seating area with rustic cottage core decor and a large painting of THE Otto Von Bismarck. However, the food and the service were a bit of a letdown. Our favorite dish was the curry fries, and the chicken schnitzel was perfectly fried but a bit bland in flavor. I couldn't stomach the sausages, which had a strong gamey flavor that even their assortment of sauces couldn't cover. While they have an excellent selection of beer, they were out of quite a bit of cocktails and beers, and the Otto G&T and quail egg shooter were not my favorite. The other couple sitting next to us could not finish their food as well, and didn't bother taking it to go. Our server was really nice, but the other employees played mute when we asked them for takeout boxes and bags (which they somehow ran out of). I recently visited this establishment. The atmosphere is trendy, comfortable and had plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. The kitchen is outside. I witness the cook making battered items from scratch. We sat at the bar as most tables were banquet style or for 4 or more people. The staff was courteous when approached but not necessarily engaging. We ordered two appetizers and a main dish to share. The pretzel was a bit rubbery, the Goulash looked tasty although I only had some of the fried shredded topping, the chicken schnitzel was finely sliced and lightly fried but not necessarily tasty. Since I've been to Germany, I expected the entree would come with sides but it didn't. My friend had a beer and it was very good. It was a good experience but didn't take me back to Germany. We made reservations for the St Paddy's corned beef dinner and by 7pm, when we arrived, they were out Luckily, literally everything else on the menu is out of the world and never fails. The key to success here is a meat(schnitzel can't go wrong) + a cabbage(we did red and white, and grilled because ) and spatzle for the carb side you can won't regret. The well rounded experience offers a great combo with any of their draft beers! They make amazing leftovers as well. The staff is always so helpful and educational- raises across the board! I continue to obsess over the food at Von Bismarck, super hearty and traditionally German. The outside patio is such a nice space with total sunshine in the afternoon for lunch. The sides for the brats were cherry jam and tangy mustard and luscious sour cream. I do think they should make the sides 20% bigger because that is the best part of the sausage combo. Spatzle is a creamy German Mac and cheese that is very delicious, definitely make sure to get it with the extra cheese option. I also tried for the first time the curry fries and they were so crisp with such great flavor, the sauces to dip were excellent accompaniments. The plating and food styling at Von Bismarck is 10/10. I will add too that it would be nice if they priced their beverages on the menu, it's not fun to get a bill and realize your beverages were half your cost and each beer was $12, just add that to the menu so it's known beforehand. We'd been talking about trying this place for a while, but never had a chance until last week. Three of us walked in without a reservation on Friday early evening. The place was pretty crowded. The maitre'd offered us the heated tent. We walked in, and instantly felt comfortable. Cozy, intimate, and fun. They even offer nice lap blankets. My husband lived in Germany for a while, so he definitely knew what he wanted. Tim, our wonderful server recommended to go with a couple of entrees and several side dishes, and it was a great idea. Schnitzel was light, crispy but tender and not dry. Just perfectly seasoned. The fish was very tasty and juicy. And great beer selection! To be completely honest, I was imagining a "classic" German restaurant with outdated decor (you know, the stereotypical stuff), but it's a very chic, simple-elegant, cool place. It was fantastic, and all of us thoroughly enjoyed the evening. If you want to try the heated tent, dress warm, especially your legs/feet. We are definitely going back. read more

A summer go-to for us. We like packing up our toddler and riding our bikes to Von Bismarck. The beers are ice cold and humongous, they really hit the spot after peddling under the blazing Reno sun. We always choose to sit outside at one of the very spacious tables under ample shade. Our little guy loves this place because on the side of the establishment they have a sand box with big rocks to climb on and buckets and shovels to dig! The staff are always very friendly and engage well with our son which we really appreciate. The only reason I wouldn't give them 5 stars is because the food selection is quite slim and it's a rather pricey place for what you get. I am a big fan of most German food but in the summer, when it's so hot out, some lighter fares options that were a little less greasy/starchy would be nice. All around, a great place establishment and a really fun place to take out-of-towners as the experience is always special. read more

We finally made it to Von Bismarck for dinner! Kicking myself for not checking it out before! We dropped in on a whim because the place down the street that we had intended to check out didn't have anyplace to park. We walked up to the podium and were quickly seated. The menu is pretty straight forward. Everything is a la carte and shareable. We ordered the chicken schnitzel, the pork schnitzel, the Berliner Curry Fries, the cheese spatzle, and the potato salad. The schnitzels are huge! The pork schnitzel comes with rocket salad and was moist and crispy and perfectly prepared. The chicken schnitzel looked delicious. It was a dining companions and I didn't try it. Both had large flakes of sea salt on them which added a nice flavor. Their take on the potato salad was fun. Tiny potatoes tossed in a sauce with crispy bacon and a touch of color from edible flowers. The spatzle, well they were to die for. Nice and cheesy with just the right amount of pan caramelization. YUM! And the Berliner Curry Fries! They were delicious as well. The curry ketchup was delicious and they also came with some mayo to dip the fries I into. Very German! Had a delicious time at Von Bismarck with friends for an evening after work. At first their menu seems hard to understand but Daniel was able to help us pick out what was good to try as we're weren't used to the language on the menu. We had just planned to grab a bite to eat and drinks before we went to explore an Art town event down the street. I didn't expect to stay and try some or their best dishes they had. First we started off with the burnt cabbage, potato salad and macaroni. The burnt cabbage was definitely unique in itself or trying as the charred ends added a flavor to the cabbage I've never had but it was good. The macaroni had a light cheese on it and was fresh. The potato salad was cute and light, we didn't want to get too full before we got our entrées. I ordered the muscles, my boyfriend and his friend got the fried chicken and for dessert Daniel let us try the fanciest cheesecake I've ever seen served at a bar. The muscles, $32 and WORTH IT for a decent serving and the bread was a perfect match to dip in the lightly buttered sauce that the muscles were cooked in. The chicken was crispy and juicy then the cheesecake was so yummy by just looking at it. Overall, I learned not to judge the food by the names on the menu as the presentations were something else that you normally don't see for a midtown bar unless you're paying for the quality. Prices were fair for what we ordered and the drink menu had plenty of choices from beer, wine and craft cocktails. Parking was easy as it wasn't too busy when we arrived but you could find yourself parking down the block for a short walk. Just be mindful of residents. Staff were super nice and helpful. We have been meaning to try this place since we moved to Reno and boy, have we been missing out! We sat outside in a little tent which was a lovely escape from the sun. They have a lot of tables outdoors which is nice for the summer. The smell emanating from the smoker/outdoor grill is intoxicating as you walk up. They have a hefty drink menu serving up a large selection of beer, cocktails, wine, and a variety of German spirits. I especially appreciated the size options on the beer. My fiancé got a 1L beer! I was happy to try a local seltzer by Revision. The staff was knowledgeable about the menu and was happy to make recommendations and steer you in the proper direction. Service was pretty slow although we went on a weekend and the place was packed and for good reason. The food wow'd me! The curry fries were out of this world. They were perfectly crispy and the curry ketchup was exquisite! I would also recommend the grilled cabbage. Holy cow! I didn't know a cabbage could taste so good! It is charred and smothered in a walnut relish and a horseradish sauce. 10/10 would recommend. Finally, the holsteinschnitzel was wonderful and it was cooked to perfection. The pork was tender and the anchovy butter complimented the pork very well. Don't shy away from this! It wasn't too fishy but salty and savory. Big fan! read more

With all the new amazing businesses opening up in Reno/Sparks lately, I feel guilty going back to the same spots over and over. But as our most recent date night proved, there's a reason that we keep returning to these spots, and Von Bismarck is no exception! We usually saddle up to the bar but chose an actual table this time, a welcome (and surprisingly romantic) choice. Even though this spot is located right on Wells, it is tucked in enough to feel like its own little world. The kitchen is right there in the open, so the aroma of delicious food cooking is always wafting through the air. A big rustic fence separates diners from the noise of the street. The wine list was a little hard for us to understand because so much of it was in German! But our server pointed us in the direction of the "number 18" on the wine list - a dry and refreshing white wine that ended up pairing perfectly with dinner. Dinner itself... man, was that tasty. We started with the curry fries (a MASSIVE portion, btw), which came with aioli and a curry ketchup for dipping. Combine the two and it's like the most epic fry sauce ever. The main event - their smoked and fried chicken - was recommended and absolutely did not disappoint. The breading was perfectly crispy, honey added that delicious balance of sweetness, and the aioli and green onions just sent the flavor profile through the roof. This is one of the most addicting fried chicken dishes I've ever had! If I had to change just one thing, I would brine the chicken for a day or two ahead of time, just for that extra hit of salt. But as it is, this dish is near perfection! Overall, we were happy to return and find that the atmosphere, food, and quality of service were still wonderful. Very "gastro-pubish" is a very good way. Stopped by and tried a couple things off of their menu. Walking up to the establishment, they have a full set up outside to cook and prepare the food. Very impressive. Pickles- Bell peppers, cucumbers, asparagus and green beans. All pickled to literal perfection. This was incredibly fresh and so crisp. Pretzel- This was warm coming out and again perfect. It came with beer cheese for dipping as well as mustard with horseradish. Personally, I prefered the mustard and horseradish, but the beer cheese did have a good flavor to it. House Made Hibiscus Soda- literally sparkling water and they bring you the "syrup" for your flavor of choice. Super beneficial because you can make it as sweet or not as you want. I'm sure once the evening gets later and the sun goes down it would have been lovely out on the outside patio. It was contemporary German food- not the traditional plate. Everything is meant to be shared just like at a steak house. We shared the currywurst fries - yummy , cucumber salad with sunflower seeds on top - cool, crunchy and tasty, Cheesy Spatzel and short ribs . Fun place to gather for friends to hang and visit with drinks and food. Service was ok ... everyone was busy but a bit confused . We aren't drinkers so we ordered ice tea - that never arrived. As we were finishing our dinner our server informed us they didn't have ice tea and we're trying to brew some. So glad we finally made it over to Von Bismarck, and we can't wait to go back! Service was wonderful, friendly and warm; great insights for the portion of their dishes! The food was delicious! We got the curry fries - slightly on the limp side, but flavor was great, especially liked having two dipping options (garlic aioli and curry ketchup). We also got the pork schnitzel, which was moist and crispy, just a touch heavy on the finishing salt, and the wood fired hanger steak, which was so tender! Both came with a healthy portion of arugula salad. We were stuffed and sadly had to skip dessert until our next visit. Also, I had a delicious cocktail - Otto's Picon, and my husband enjoyed both of the plank-biers he got. The outdoor patio seating was very pleasant, with lots of shade and screening of the road and cars. There were families with kids, and people with dogs, very chilled ambiance. My sister and I decided to try the Von Bismarck today. We are always on the lookout for good German food and this was scrumptious! It was the perfect day for casual outdoor seating! I had the schnitzel sandwich. The pickled onions, cucumbers and sauce added so much flavor to this incredible meal. The French fries were perfection. My sister doesn't usually like anything on her bratwurst, but she loved the way this brat was served and enjoyed dipping her fries into the extra cheese sauce that was left from the pretzel. We passed this place and decided to go back because the outside area looked really cool. And it was. We opted to stay on the patio, which was elegant and open. Definitely a notch above some of the establishments a mere half mile away. Amazing how a few hundred yards is like a lifetime of difference. When we walked in, we lamented that we'd already eaten somewhere else. The aroma coming from the fire pit was delectable. But that's okay. They had some specialty drinks which piqued our interest. And they were excellent. I opted for the Underspritz and my friend had the Otto's Picon. We shared a Fassbind Vieil Abricot. For the price of the Fassbind, I expected a better presentation in an aperitif glass, but we got a shot instead. The devil is in the details. And the drinks took way too long. Plus, the prices were on the high side. The service was great once our waitress arrived, and the atmosphere was wonderful. Walking up it smelled amazing. The fire was going on the grill and it was a perfect night for sitting outside. We started with a pretzel and cheese. The mustard was YUMMY! Classic stone mustard but quite a lot of horseradish kick. The Obatzda cheese spread was mild and warm. To drink we had the Rothaus, described as a "very hoppy pils" by our server. It was light but earthy like a European beer but also not just a traditional pils. The hops added bite without the bitterness of traditionally hoppy styles like IPA. We shared two large plates and a side. The perfectly tender, perfectly breaded, perfectly fried pork Shweine schnitzel with a lemony arugula salad was delicious. The Rauchhhnchen fried and smoked chicken with honey was all that. The thick batter was crunchy and the chicken was tender. The honey added some softness and sweet. Our side was the sauerkraut. I love sauerkraut but my husband is not such a fan. BUT even he c went in for seconds. It was a mild kraut with a good balance of the tart and the seasoning. Next time we're trying the gem salad, fire roasted sauerkraut, and brauts. Everything that went by for other tables was beautiful. Can't wait to go again. read more
