This was such a pleasant find! I've always dreaded stopping in Reno before and after the Burn, because there really aren't any restaurants that appeal to me. This year, a fellow camp member and Reno local invited us here, and it made all the difference in the world to me. I now have something to look forward to. Von Bismarck gave me 3 incredible, indelible new food memories that occupy my food porn hall of fame: - Berliner curried fries (omg the flavor! They really leveled up the potato game with this!) - Otto's best wurst (no nitrates!!!!). My table all agreed that their wursts were distinctly different. - Schwenkbraten (the most delish thing I've ever had. No idea pork could taste this good.... and that horseradish cream!) I haven't had the opportunity to try other dishes. Which is the only reason I haven't dropped 5 stars. But for now, know that this place is my local favorite go to. read more

Came in specifically to try out the Schnapps flight, sadly they were completely out of everything, which was a pretty big let down. I did end up choosing a different drink, which they were out of the main ingredient for this as well so they substituted. My husband had an Inglorious Bastard, which was super tasty and unique. We ordered the Rauch Hähnchen, which was absolutely amazing! It cooked perfectly, super juicy, and crunchy. I 100% recommend. We also got the Schweineschnitzel, which was also cooked extremely well but was a little bit plain, I was looking for a little more flavor. The patio of these place is amazing, fantastic ambiance. The decor inside from what I saw was also very cool. The service wasn't quite on point, the server was inattentive and not very friendly. I would like to come back for a second try, but will for sure make sure I can enjoy the Schnapps flight. read more

Finally my first visit to Von Bismark, I finally talked my wife into it, with the promise of trying the schnapps. Well bummer there, they were completely out of all the schnapps. Wife did end up picking another cocktail, and they were out of the main ingredient in that as well. I cannot remember this one and it's not on the current website menu, but it contained grape. The service was ok, but our waiter was not very friendly or attentive. He honestly appeared to have maybe hit a bit too much jazz cabbage on his break. It was also kind of odd that the menu's were never picked up, they just stacked our food and stuff on them. Not sure if that's just how they do it here or what. Ambiance was actually pretty neat, themed really well and the outdoor seating is chill. The bar inside looks pretty fun and there is an aroma of bbq all over the place. Bathrooms were around the outside and super clean and tidy. The food! So first off we had the Rauch Hähnchen, I gotta say if you get only one thing, it's gotta be this. This was pretty fantastic, super crunchy, and the hit of honey was on point. The other thing we had was the Schweineschnitzel, this was cooked great and super tender, but just really needed a bit more flavor, even with the arugula and dressing. Our arugula was pretty dry so maybe it just needed more of the dressing. Still a fun new thing to try. I'm for sure going to go back and try again, but I'll be calling ahead to make sure they have the schnapps as that's what really drew us in. I ended up getting an Inglorious Bastard which was a fun accompaniment to that heavy meal. read more

First time here and happily reporting a great spot. Wasn't sure this would be my kinda place but a couple friends invited me so I found out in fact it is. The bartender makes an amazing cocktail and we had some laughs while I awaited the rest of my party. When my friends arrived we enjoyed a cocktail and scouted the menu. I was elated when I was told that the fish schnitzel was in fact Haddock. I've only had it on the east coast of Ireland so I was stoked. We each ordered an entree and a side. When the food arrived we laughed hard. A lot of food appeared and we quickly realized that Von Bismarck served very hardy portions. So fun! The spatzle with Gruyere cheese was amongst my favorite side dish along with the amazing smoked cabbage dish. I recommend requesting a char on it to ensure cooking it a bit more and ensuring a more tender dish. The platters of food we watched being turned out here was very entertaining to watch. No one's leaving this place hungry! There is still outdoor seating available as they have heaters running. Nice decor and a family style seating is encouraged. We sat inside and had nice lap blankets just for a cozy touch. read more

Sad to hear that Von Bismarck is closing down -- it's truly one of Reno's great spots. I stopped in while visiting from out of town, and it ended up being one of the most memorable meals of the trip. I grabbed a seat at the bar, where the bartender was incredibly friendly and helpful, making the experience even better. Started off with a Kölsch -- light, crisp, and refreshing, the perfect beer to settle in with. For food, I began with the pretzel and Obatzda cheese spread, which was fantastic. The pretzel was soft, fresh, and warm, and the cheese spread was rich and flavorful -- a perfect combo. For entrées, we ordered the Schweineschnitzel and the Rauch Hänchen. The schnitzel was excellent -- tender, flavorful, and cooked just right -- but the smoked/fried chicken drumsticks completely stole the show. Hands down some of the best fried chicken I've ever had. The breading was perfectly crispy, the chicken was juicy and piping hot, and the smoky flavor came through beautifully. The drizzle of honey sauce on top added just the right touch of sweetness to balance everything out. I savored every bite -- I'd honestly go back just for that chicken. If you haven't been yet, make a point to visit before they close their doors. If I lived in Reno, I'd be there at least once a week. Von Bismarck will definitely be missed. read more

What a hidden gem in midtown. Came here in a Friday night on a date. We did not have a reservation so we weren't able to sit at a table, but there was some seating at the counter. When the weather is warm, there's tons of outside seating too. This was my first REAL experience with German food. We started with the pretzel and cheese which was soft and warm. We split the sample plate of bratwurst. All very delicious and came with dipping options. The schnitzel was my favorite. Paired with the Arugala salad! Absolutely delicious. Von Bismarck was a highlight of my recent trip to Reno. It was my friend's birthday and I had heard rumblings of a nearby German food spot to our hotel. Off to Yelp I went! The photos and the menu enticed us to check it out. When I rolled up, I was impressed. Large outdoor space makes this place a good spot in warmer weather. My friend and I went in, no reservation and were sat immediately at the bar. The place has an upscale feel to it without feeling too contrived or hipstery. Friendly bartender greeted us either conversations and recommendations for our activities after dinner- we scooted down the street to watch a friend spin a dj set at another spot. Oh- the dinner! The food was fantastic. Everything from the extensive beer menu, the entrees, even the pretzel, were standout. This is some of the best German food I have had since my old haunt in SF closed up. What an unexpected pleasant find! With both indoor and outdoor seating, a full bar and an even fuller menu, Von Bismarck is like a breath of fresh air. This place is great! We were able to be seated right away and the staff were very nice! The ambiance is very nice! When we got there it wasn't busy but it picked up but it wasn't too loud. I like how they have butcher paper that they write their specials on! I ordered the pork schnitzel and my husband got the sausage trio. Both were very delicious! The pork was breaded very well, it was juicy and the flaky slat on top was a great touch, really pulled the flavor in! The arugula salad was very fresh and light! I squeezed the lemon all over it and loved it! My husband loved the sausage with the variety of sauces! My man is a big bratwurst lover and he discovered he loved the berry jam the best! Wow, where do I begin? I've often walked by Von Bismarck, and I always wondered why it was so busy and what kind of place it would be. What can I say about Von Bismarck that I haven't already said? The manager Daniel is amazing. He tries so hard to make sure everybody is greeted that everybody feels welcome and tell you the specials. The food is amazing. I love the fact that they rotate their menu so you get something new every time you go it's fresh it's seasonal. It's amazing. This is by far one of my favorite places to spend an extra dollar and all the dishes are so shareable because they're so large. I have to say the schnapps is my favorite part of the dessert menu apricot is the best. You have to try it enjoy! We celebrated my sisters birthday with a delicious selection of flank steak, pork schnitzel, Brussels sprouts and the grape salad... such an amazing meal ....served quickly and with lots of fresh sauces. First off, took me way too long to stop by Von Bismarck! I am a big fan of German/Austrian food so I was very excited to try it out after seeing the menu. When you first walk up you can tell the owners put a lot of time into the decor and esthetics of the restaurant. We chose to sit on the dog friendly patio and it was such a beautiful set up! They had both regular and communal tables, just like you'd see in Europe! Our service was absolutely amazing and so was all staff we interacted with. Some of the items did take a bit longer to come out but you could tell it was because everything was freshly made, and that is worth the little extra wait to me! We ordered the pretzel with cheese, spatzel with cheese, warm potato salad and Vogel schnitzel to split between 2 of us. It was more than enough food! We even took some left overs home. Street parking, but not an issue on raining/snowing days. Open 6 days a week. Tue to Fri = 4pm to close; Sat and Sun = noon till close. Service - Mellisa and the rest of the team did a good job. It is obviously a team effort. Props to the manager to create such a positive culture. It was busy when we got here and everyone before us had reservations; but not an issue for them to still seat us. Great spot for a brew and a meal. All the food is good here and shareable between a party. Fantastic: Schwenkbraten - simple but unbelievably delicious and juicy. The only seasonings I detected on the pork were salt and the smoke from the wood, and the horseradish cream does not overpower the deliciousness of the pork flavor. Beautifully executed. Rauchhänhchen - chicken is super juicy and has a sweet honey glaze over top. The smoked flavor of the meat combines very well with the sweet exterior. Breading is ultra crispy, reminiscent of Korean fried chicken. The combination becomes a taste unique to this restaurant! Curry Fries - these are my favorite item here. Slightly different than the last time I had them, the fries are thicker now than they used to be, and the portion smaller. The curry seasoning is superb: strong without being overly salty. The red and white sauces that come with the fries combine wonderfully with the curry seasoning. Good: Grilled cabbage - The charred bits of cabbage give a great flavor to pair with the dressing and topping. Some bits are a bit too burnt and the parts close to the stem are a bit tough. Overall really good though. Pork schnitzel - fried to a beautiful golden crust. The interior was just a tad on the dry side. Pretzel - chewy and delicious with the paired cheese sauce. Spätzle - at the risk of sounding reductive, a fancy Mac and cheese. A good amount of grease in this one, but still tasty. The "Otto's best wursts" platter was decent, but to be honest the flavors were a bit too muted for me to tell the difference between the 3 different kinds of wursts served. And for 3 sausages, $26 seems a bit pricey! Overall this restaurant is outstanding! They have a really nice space with a trendy but comfortable seating area, and good service. The outdoor stove and wood fired grill allow them to have unique dishes here that they prepare masterfully. To top it all off, I think almost everything is modestly priced for food of this quality. read more

Our second time here - a Reno favorite for us. Food is still excellent - we had the cabbage (absolutely delicious), curry fries (a bit too salty for me but unique take on fries), chikcne drumsticks (delicious!), chicken schnitzel (nice and crispy but would recommend the cheese sauce on the side or not at all - our party of three didn't think the dish needed the sauce; a gravy sauce could've been better), and the sausage platter (all pretty good). We also had the dessert of the day which was the cheesecake - pretty good! Be sure to add the Obatzda Cheese Spread, it was absolutely delicious! For our main course, we split the HOLSTEINSCHNITZEL and the SPÄTZLE, with the cheese of course, and both were absolute heaven! So we were super excited when they were open on a day that we were free! We were greeted by a friendly server, she was very attentive and brought out our drinks quickly. Von Bismarck is an all around fantastic spot! I love the open air vibe inside and the giant patio. Diana one of the bartenders is incredibly knowledgeable and always makes the best suggestions - so if she is working we always opt to sit at the bar. They have interesting cocktails and a wide range of wine on tap that you can't get other places. All the food is great - and lots of gluten free options (a necessity for me). Highly recommend the pickles, sauerkraut, grilled cabbage, curry fries and whatever seasonal veggies they have. We generally come during the day and have loved the sampler sausage platter. However, the few times we have come for dinner it did seem a bit over cooked as other reviews have mentioned. Also, a good tip is they recently changed something and the menu reflects cash prices. Not too loud overall, so conversation was easy. Spotlessly clean, and simply decorated. Our server was attentive and helpful. Service was quick. The food was incredible. Service was so poor on most recent visit that probably will never come again. It is too bad when the service is so terrible at a place that has good food. If you want to go somewhere where a server repeatedly forgets an order and then comes back and tells you they're going to bring that order that they forgot and they still don't bring it leaving you to close out your bill because no use on waiting if they're going to forget repeatedly. For a place that charges more than enough for food I'd assume that they could hire servers that actually can remember things and get bigger bills versus make you leave due to lack of service. read more

We met friends here for a get together. This small bar has some bar seating and several tables, an outside bbq and as the weather warms up there are some outdoor tables. Our Server Jon (and Dan) were attentive, on it and very much appreciated. Let's talk food! We tried several menu items and everyone tasted it all. Sausages, pork steak, cheesy Spatzle, fried chicken, pretzel... what a good German food experience! Lots of flavor and variety available. The Spatzle reminded me of our trip to Germany and Hungary, the sausages were a bit dry but had great flavors! My favorite was the pork steak which had a beautiful char on the edges, and a smoky flavor. The pretzels are a hit ( I didn't taste that). Friends loved the smashed potato which had fried onion and a spicy mustard . We tested the curry fries too and they were filling with lots of flavor. The curry was on the side but I'm not sure if they come that way or were ordered with curry on the side. Those fries are amazing! The service here is great. Our server was super attentive and able to explain menu items to help in our decision-making. Nice indoor and outdoor seating, simply decorated, clean, and relaxing. Sorry, I didn't get pics as I was hungry and with a group of people and wanted to take in the whole dining experience. We had the carpaccio, fries, pretzel, pickles (came with pickled green beans and asparagus too), a nice bottle of reisling wine, 2 bottles, actually, as it was 50% off bottles for wine down Wednesday, pork snitzel, chicken snitzel, and the steak with argula salad. Yelp has recommended this place a few times and since we happened to be in the area looking for a dinner spot, we gave it a try. The restaurant seems like it's set up for warm summer evenings. There is an outdoor grill area surrounded by lots of outdoor seating. The interior of the restaurant is much smaller with limited seating and a bar. Unfortunately we visited in a chilly June day so we couldn't really enjoy the setup. The staff was all great! Really friendly and helpful. We tried a pretzel, a salad, and the sausage sampler. We visited Von Bismarck to try the new summer menu and had a great time! I was excited to see some of the portions have been sized down and lowered in priced. The rauchhahnchen is now $16 for 3 chicken drumsticks, which I find to be the perfect size! The schweinschnitzel is a little smaller, but still a great size. We tried a pretzel with beer cheese and it was fantastic, I could have had 6 more. But the COCKTAILS! My boyfriend has a grapefruit beer, which was tasty even if I'm not a beer girl. I'm not a beer drinker but enjoyed it. We also had apricot schnapps. Too strong for me but my date enjoyed it. We ordered the trio of sausage, cheesy spatzel and pork schnitzel. So good!
