The quality of the cheese is top notch and definitely worth dishing out the few extra bucks. Crust has a great springy chewiness to it that is key in Neapolitan style pizza crust. Sauce was okay and the bottom could have been a bit stiffer. Also, torn basil would have been more authentic and more flavorful than the chiffonade. Place is HUGE with plentiful, spacious seating with a very large bar. Attentive staff but they aren't the most efficient. read more

Had the absolute best dinner in a long time. Good to have real crafted cocktails (these bartenders really know what they're doing), real Italian dinner and great conversation. We let our waiter Scott pick our app from 3 choices. We had carbonara arancini for a starter. Absolutely amazing. My bf had the meatballs and ziti, he was licking the plate. I had the lasagne - it was super rich and heavy, just the way a good Italian grandma would make it. Even better I didn't need to eat a lot to be full and got to take a bunch home for a meal later. DID I MENTION ALL THEIR PASTA IS MADE IN HOUSE? Yeah and it's amazing. Every cocktail we had was good. Some better than others, BUT our favorite addition to the menu is called "we think, you drink" - give them a base and they will provide the rest. Both whiskey-based drinks my bf got were unreal even to me who doesn't normally veer toward whiskey. We even got to meet the owners, who were celebrating their anniversary! Always enjoy Volturno and this visit was no different. Restaurant was busy on a Thursday night but we were seated immediately and able to get a table on their patio. Server approached the table immediately and was very pleasant. Charcuterie was delicious as was the pizza. Seems like this is a popular spot on Monday nights due to 2 for 1 pizza nights. (so crowded that they actually have someone in the parking lot directing traffic). The pizza here is tragically average. The pasta dishes ... don't even bother. The Margarita pizza here is absolutely blah. Not much taste and the cheese and sauce is very sparsely put on the pizza. Some of the other pizzas lack the right amount of toppings which makes it kind of like eating mostly dough. I had the Aranci Balls for an appetizer (fried rice balls with cheese) and they tasted like something from a Trader Joe's frozen box. Seriously, I couldn't believe how bad they were. How do you mess up Aranci? The best part about Volturno is the atmosphere. The pizza ovens give it a warm glow and despite it being a cavernous Buick dealership with lots of glass windows, it feels warm and cozy. They also have a great beer selection with lots of unique craft brews. The worst part is the bar set up. Its a rectangle with most of the seats on either side. So basically you are sitting right across from someone else and staring into their eyes as they eat their pizza. Very awkward if the bar is crowded. I'd rather not have someone inadvertently stare at me while I eat my pizza. I'd return here ... but it's def. not my favorite place. read more

Classy pizza joint in Worcester that I was able to enjoy for a late night dinner. The restaurant is very covid conscious and safe with plastic barriers in between tables. The staff are friendly and helpful as well, I think it's the small gestures that make a difference, and while they didn't have decaf instead tea options, the waitress was quick to suggest hot water with lemon and this did just the trick. The pizza is thin crust and thoughtfully created with sauce and cheese in the right but not overwhelming proportions. Highly recommend! read more

Just Not Good I am saddened by this review because I love a place that does real Neapolitan pizza. We went in on a Monday and they are running a special 2 for 1 pizzas. We ordered 2 pizzas. Then it all went wrong. First let me preface that the place was dead so it's not like this food had to be rushed. We get the 2 pizzas and they were terrible. Undercooked, crust all gluey and wet. Sausage that tasted funny. They looked awful, I should have taken a picture, but I was so disgusted I didn't feel like wasting my time. We left 8 or 9 pieces of pizza and didn't even have them wrap it up to go. This should have signaled something to the manager but I guess not. My husband and I ate at Volturno on opening night, Tuesday March 19th. We got there right when they opened for two reasons: 1) I was afraid they might be busy and 2) I was so excited for this place to open there was no way I wasn't going the first night they were open. We sat at the bar because lets be honest, that's where the fun happens. We were greeted by Christie and instantly struck up an easy flowing conversation with her. She made us feel like we were VIP customers and we enjoyed our time there more because of her. The menu comes on a clipboard and is very basic, yet enticing. There are a variety of mixed cocktails that sounded amazing, but I was in the mood for a beer. Most of the beers are $5, which isn't bad for quality beer like Dogfish 60 Minute. They have a good variety of draft and bottles. I didn't see the wine list, I'll have to check that out next time. We started with an order of arancini, because I'm a sucker for the little fried risotto balls. They were excellent, filled with porcini mushrooms and mozzarella. I highly recommend them. For our pizza we ordered the Volturno because it just sounded to amazing not to and come on...if the pizza is named for the restaurant you are in, that is what you get. It has San Marzano tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella, arugula, and prosciutto on it. I loved the arugula because it provides a nice bitter element to the salt of the prosciutto and the sweetness of the tomatoes. The crust was perfectly crisp and light. Honestly, order two pizzas because the thin crust makes this pizza not overly carb loading, so you can totally eat a whole pie by yourself (Ok maybe thats just me but I'm not ashamed). Now for dessert...which they technically don't have. I told the owner he better be prepared to add it to the menu because people are going to hear about it and they are going to want it. They made a Nutella pizza. The crust is cooked in the oven until it blows up like a ball, then it is sliced open and spread with Nutella, then put back together. Sprinkled with powdered sugar, this "pizza" is heavenly. The owner stated he was working on adding to the menu and possibly putting bananas in it. If they do this, it will be a necessity to order this pizza upon every dining experience. I'm simply stating the facts of what will make your meal complete at Volturno. The decor of the restaurant is very simple and mainstreamed. The bar stools spiral up and down so no matter what your height, you can adjust it to be seated comfortably at the marble bar. One of the things I love the most is that they kept the stained glass that says Buick on it. It is a nice touch and reminds you of the history of the building. I have no doubt in my mind that this place will do wonderfully, and it is a welcome addition to Shrewsbury Street. We visited Volturno for a late lunch on a quiet Wednesday afternoon and we were just about the only ones in the house. The building/room is really interesting and comfortable. I had read about the VPN certification and I was curious. I am a pizza junkie and seek out great pizza's wherever I travel. I've had the best pizzas San Francisco, New Haven and New York have to offer, but the pie I had at Volturno might be the best I've ever had. We had a Margherita and a pizza with sausage, cherry tomato and scallions(calabrese?). The Margherita has a great rich cheesiness but the basil was overwhelmed. The Sausage and cherry tomato pizza was great, fennel in the sausage was tasty. The crust on both pizzas was phenominal. We also had a roasted beet appetizer with goat cheese, hazlenuts, lemon that was delicious. We complimented the whole thing with a wonderful bottle of Barbera that was only $26. Hats off to our server Otto, his enthusiasm for the food and his knowledge of the ingredients was a big part of our great experience. I asked a fellow foodie friend where I should take my girlfriend out Friday night for dinner. Volturno was one of three suggestions he made to me. Once he said "pistachio pizza", I was sold. We arrived at 6:30 and were greeted by three genuinely happy hosts. They took my name down and said it would be about ten minutes until we'd have a table. We decided to sit at the bar while we waited. After two minutes of sitting at the bar, we decided to just eat our meal there. There was plenty of space to and we had already hit it off with the bartender, Jay. We ordered the arugula and beet salad and two pizzas. The pistachio and the funghi. Both were very tasty. After dinner we were introduced to the co-owners, Greg Sr. and Liz. They made us feel so comfortable and ended talking to us for the rest of the night. They made us their Nutella dessert pizza simply because we asked why there were jars of Nutella by the pizza ovens. Overall, we had a great experience at Volturno. There's so many more compliments I could give this establishment, but I'll let you come to your own conclusions. What I can guarantee, is that you will not be disappointed. read more

Heard good things about this place. But ended up being a little disappointed. We went in on Monday which happened to be 2 for 1 pizza night. The building itself is really nice. Very trendy and cool looking. We ordered the crispy fingerling potatoes as an appetizer. They were crispy cooked, with pecorino cheese and sage. We really like these, however, this is where our love affair ended. We ordered two pizza's the Calbrese, and the Pistachio. The Calabrese was described as: Panna, Mozzarella, sausage, tomatoes, and scallions. The Pistachio - pistachio pesto, mozzarella, sausage, and pecorino. The pistachio is a white pizza, with no tomato sauce. Now I should say the Calabrese was good, it had a nice flavor and was very fresh, however, the pizza itself was super wet and soggy from the center, all the way back to the middle of each piece. The crust itself is really good, but it is only the back portion that is crispy as the rest was just a soggy mess. The pistachio was just not good. Greasy, not much taste, way too much sausage. It too was soggy, this time due to the cheese and sausage grease. Again not good! We honestly didn't even eat this pizza after more then a couple bites. Now mind you, perhaps if these issues could be fixed the Calabrese could be a really good pizza. But at roughly $17.00 a piece for basically a personal size pizza, its just too expensive to take the risk again and we won't be going back. I saw in some other reviews that you can ask for your pizza to be extra crispy and that it is recommended. We didn't see this until after we ate there otherwise we would've asked for that for sure. So perhaps for others that may fix the problem. read more

We couldn't quite figure out why, there were plenty of tables, the restaurant was NOT busy at all. Oh, yes. I forgot to mention - my 6 year old son was with us. When she returned, we were told no children under the age of 12 were allowed outside. WHAT? Sorry that my child might possibly disrupt the image you're attempting to portray. It's not like my child had plans to jump the wall & play in oncoming traffic, we came here to eat. So we sat inside, ordered a couple of pizzas & a sandwich. The wait took forever - probably around 30 minutes. Did I mention the restaurant was NOT busy at all? I must say my sandwich was delicious. I'm told the pizzas were just okay. Even though the listing indicates Volturno is "kid friendly" we certainly didn't feel that way. We were starving and went to volturnos on Tuesday 4/3 at 3:00 in the afternoon. There weren't very many people there. A man in his 30's wearing shorts and a tea shirt with a beard asked us to wait for a moment and he went to clean a table and then he cleaned another table. Then he started to adjust the blinds on 3 windows. We were thinking he was getting us a nice place yo be seated. Noooo, he then started to pick up glasses from another table and completely ignored us. We walked out. Too bad for them because we have been.Visiting their Resturant for many years. He totally ignored us and kept us waiting for over 5 minutes. We walked out and went to Via. I guess they didn't need our business. We will not be going back and will let everyone know how badly we were treated. I've been here twice and both times the pizza and service were excellent. Great Neapolitan pizza, good char and delicious, not super heavy. (Get the Capocollo!) The staff was friendly both times, the restaurant was clean, big windows, spacious, and the brick oven is cozy. Feels like a big industrial loft with a bar in the middle. I also had a drink last time, The Goblet of Fire. Loved it so much I plan to buy ingredients to make it at home (peach and chili peppers) I highly recommend, I loved it, and so did my friends both times. The staff isn't the only phenomenal part of the experience though. Please, I beg of you, try any item on the menu and you won't be disappointed. I've had multiple pizzas...knocked it out the park...appetizers....done deal. It doesn't stop there. I have to give credit to the ladies that were part of my wonderful experience as well. I have been coming here for 2 years now on my own and it's been a great experience every time. I manage 6 properties in the area and I live in Weymouth, Ma. I've always raved about the pizza here to my wife and it just so happens I was with my wife and 6 year old daughter. They have a buy 1 get 1 free pizza special Mondays and Tuesdays. We were here at about 3:30pm this past Tuesday. We entered the restaurant and waited to be seated. It wasn't very busy but we're seated after a few minutes. We sat down and waited about 5-10 minutes before a waitress came to our table for our order. I order 2 soft drinks for myself and my daughters my wife got a water. I also ordered the meatballs and 2 pizzas right there with the waitress to move things along. The drinks came about 10-15 minutes later. About 30 minutes later, my wife was wondering where our food was??? The waitress came over and said she was gonna go check, she comes back a minute later and said there was a mix up in the kitchen and it's getting put in right now. She also said the manager will be right over to do something for us. (That's very disappointing because we waited 30 minutes and my 6 year old was hungry! We weren't looking for any freebies, I just wanted my food. I said to forget about the meatballs and just bring the pizza, my wife said to just leave because she was very frustrated and my daughter was getting restless. Daddy: " where's our pizza!" We just got up and left. I dropped money for the soft drinks and left. I felt really frustrated and called the restaurant to speak to the manager. He picked up and I told I've been there many times and never had any issues. He said: "I have no excuses and we are shut down the place for the day because they had people call out and they were short in help that day." That's not an excuse and if they were short handed, they should have mention that before we got sat down so we can have an expectation of waiting. I told him that it's been such a horrible experience, that I could never go back again especially when I brought my wife and kid for the first time. I got to say, anyone who rated Volturno less than 3 stars needs to get acclimated back into good food because this place is fire. Pasta is homemade, perfect al dente every-time, rigatoni al American is amazing, pizzas are always amazing, never had undercooked dough and I've been over 15 times. The service is absolutely amazing as well, staff is attentive even under pressure, and bar tenders are masters at their craft, if I get a "we choose you drink" which is where they create a drink based off of an alcohol of your choosing, it never disappoints. Ambiance is warm and great for families or a date, without breaking the bank either. Everything about this place is worth it, bad reviews can suck an egg. read more
