There was a little wait since it was a weekend but that's expected from any good restaurant which has these many reviews. After getting seated, we were served complementary Tortilla chips with some tangy salsa to go along with it. That in itself was a like an appetizer! We ordered some beverages and they were delicious!! All Sol Marg is to die for! The food was so tasty with so many options for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians. Based on many high reviews, I organized a dinner with 5 other friends on a Wednesday evening to try it out. Sadly, it was disappointing to say the least. First of all, parking can be a pain so if you can't find parking in the small lot you will have to find street parking. They called ahead of time and they said they don't take reservations so I got there at 5:30 pm and had to wait till 6:30 pm to be seated for a party of 6 , that's fine, they were busy, no star deduction there. The hostess was a bit aloof and doesn't pay attention to detail. I over heard her mentioned to the manager who asked him how long I had been waiting, and mind you I was within an earshot, she said 30 minutes when it was in fact an hour. I understand if there were other people waiting and she got confused,but it was just me in the front entrance/bar area for that entire time. We ended seated outside in the patio area. A few of us got various margaritas which was fine. We got an order of their supposedly famous guacamole. If it was good guacamole, I suppose they can justify the $9.00 per order, but it was very bland. Disappointing. I got the chicken enchilada and another friend got pork enchiladas while others got a vegetarian dish and a few others got seafood items. Every dish was just okay and nothing to rave about. We opted to try their dessert in hopes that our meal could at least be saved by a sweet treat. We got a chocolate cake and flan. Both were underwhelming. The waiter was medicore at best. He definitely made sure we got drinks and appetizers but took a while to come back for our entree order. After our plates came out, it was difficult to flag anyone down to refill our water glasses. Perhaps it was an "off" night but it really says something when appetizers, entrees and desserts just leave a very "meh" taste and it doesn't help it wasn't cheap either. I was embarrassed to have organized the dinner with my friends at this place. We enjoyed each others company but dinner was a total let down. I came here today based on a friend recommending this place to me, and the good Yelp reviews, however, I was somewhat disappointed. I ordered a vegetarian burrito and it really was nothing special. I thought the sauce on top was too spicy, even though I had gotten the "mild" one. My total, with tip was $18.26. For one so so burrito?! I think I'll go somewhere else! I can get three, tastier burritos from somewhere else in that price! Additionally, they didn't let me take the chips and salsa home, which were almost untouched. I had wanted to share them with my siblings, but no, when I asked to pack them, they said "sorry, these are for dine-in only." What the heck?!...So they would rather throw them away then let customers take them with them and enjoy them. What I liked about the place was the decor inside. I won't be returning. I have been remiss in not reviewing Vive Sol in all the years I have been going there. It is especially rewarding to see this restaurant glide so seemingly effortlessly through the Pandemic and still come out being one of the great treasures of Peninsula dining. The servers really care about you and make sure you are getting the best of what they serve. The food is rustic but clearly made by a kitchen that gives a damn about their food. And their drinks got me through Sheltering in Place. It pleases me, to no end, to see that a small, well-run restaurant was able to make it in a time of Covid. This restaurant has probably one of the better intimate/date spot settings I have seen in a long time. Nice tables, dim lighting and the setup is impressive. They have parking in the back of the restaurant which is nice. As far as the food goes and being a vegetarian, I found it bland without much flavor. We had gotten the guajillo and the mole entree which had rave reviews from my friends. We did expect a slightly spicy dish and a base which packs a good punch of different flavors, instead we felt the sauce was weak and too heavy. Maybe it tastes better with chicken or other forms of meat , but the vegetarian was hard to finish. We got some cocktails which were good and we recommend them. Considering I've been to all the other "Fiesta & Sol" restaurants owned by this ubiquitous family, I have no idea why it took me so long to eat at this one. Up till now, the Milanesa at La Fiesta was the frontrunner for this group of restaurants. I'm thinking now that the Sabana Invierno is giving it a run for top dog. Thin sliced and well seasoned beef steak on a bed of beans, chorizo and cheese au gratin. How could you not like that description? Turns out the Sea Bass tacos were also very good. The night was a bit slow but I'm guessing the service is better on a weekend night when the place is a bit more full. This was too firm for me--I couldn't even cut it with my fork! - No guacamole: I heard the waiter tell the other table they were out today cause other diners ate it all. What kind of excuse is that? We went less than an hour after the place opened and it seemed pretty empty when we arrived. How can a Mexican place run out of guacamole? It must have been from the day before or something, but even then they should have time to get some avocados and make some up real quick, shouldn't they? Just seemed really really odd. And of course today I was excited to go with a good friend who loves guacamole and was looking forward to dipping several dozens of chips in it. - Service: my friend called it "interesting." We didn't see much of our waiter, he wasn't very personable, we only got one refill of our water, and took a while to process the bill. Based on this experience I'm not encouraged to go back. The longstanding #1 restaurant on TripAdvisor, it took us forever to finally try this place we drive/bike past almost every day! And now I understand why it's ranked so highly... It's just one of those places where [almost] everything on the menu is absolutely phenomenal! For drinks, I got the x-rated margarita, and was so smitten with it I forgot to try the other drinks at the table. I did have a sip of the sangria, which did seem very good, but in a fight between a marg and a glass of sangria, I think the winner is clear. As far as food goes, I studied the menu carefully online before going and opted for the enfrijoladas. Listen: if you don't want to finish your plate, you shouldn't order those bad boys. It's the 'favorite vegetarian option' for a reason... It's savory, well-seasoned, full of all kinds of vegetables... The tortillas are that perfect chewy, not soggy,consistency, and it makes you wonder why vegetarian food at other Mexican restaurants is so inexcusable. My fiance ordered a vegetarian burrito with mole sauce, and hours later was still shaking his head and saying, "That mole sauce." It was really amazing-- so complex and chocolatey, spicy and rich and deep. It's a real mole sauce, homeslice. I know he really enjoyed it, but I was so focused on my enfrilos that I barely noticed. The [almost] mentioned above is for my friend who ordered the chicken soup (caldo de pollo) and found it bland, and too salty. She told me to make sure to put that in my review-- and you know what I recommend! For two margaritas and two (vegetarian) entrees, I think we spent about $55. Not too shabby! My coworkers really enjoy eating here. I myself, am not a huge fan. The portions here are large when it comes to enchiladas and burritos, otherwise... it's the norm. Their shrimp diabla was not sauced. It does have a good smoky flavor to it, but definitely not the normal sauced up shrimp in spicy sauce. You get 7 good sized shrimps grilled with onions and tomatoes, served with beans and rice. If you ever want to order guacamole here, don't. You won't get it, and if you do, it's' because you've pestered the waiter to get it before you really eat your meal. Otherwise, expect them to put it on your bill without serving it to you. The salsa here is never consistent. Sometimes they're spicy, sometimes they are just bland and watery. Not enjoyable when you don't know what to expect. But do expect them to remove this from your table before your bill comes. I don't understand that concept. There are tons of employees/waiters here. To waive one down, takes a bit of time. Be patient, and make sure you have enough time to wait for service. To each their own right? This place, is not the place I'd miss once I've left. read more

i decided to come here for my birthday dinner yesterday since i loved it so much the first time. i love how there's so many waiters/busboys for a small restaurant. you are always being tended to, and not having to flag down for assistance. i knew my grandma isn't so keen on dark restaurants, so we got a table by the window with the sun poking through. chips and salsa were great as always, we got a refill without asking before the basket was empty. the appetizers here are pricey, and small in quantity, but the quality is superb. got the calamari (without the cilantro) and ceviche. the calamari was really good, the cheesy warm sauce, not to my taste, although i love creamy cheese. the ceviche was not what i expected, the fish was in the greenish tangy sauce, so it was very cooked, but it was still pretty good. went well with the tostada chips they give you. i ordered the same thing, the lomo de puerco because i loved it so much the first time. its pork tenderloin with spinach and chorizo with the poblano sauce. so heavy, but so good, especially wrapped in the flour tortillas they give. everyone was happy with their meal, although my dad said the margarita couldve been stronger. :) my brother had told them it was my birthday when i was in the restroom, and they came out with a cake with rose petals on the side, and sang happy birthday to me, even singing my name! the cake was good, very moist, almost wet, but really good. however, when the bill came, i overheard my brother say they charged for the cake, but that was okay, understandable. good experience both times, love this place! read more

How have I not yet written a review for this place? Vive Sol is my favorite date place! There are a ton of awesome taquerias in the Bay Area, but since most of them are fast food-y / hole-in-the-walls, they may not be best place for a nice date. That's where Vive Sol comes in. They have a tiny bar area, but they serve the best margaritas in the area. Fresh-squeezed lime juice really does make a difference. Their chips come with not one, but 3 incredibly fresh salsas (my favorite is the bright red one, very smoky). They specialize in sauces and it shows! Try: the pollo guajillo (Grandma's special!) or the enchiladas with guajillo sauce. It's sour-cream based, rich, and decadent. Really, really tasty. (oh. hello saliva.) If you don't want something too creamy, try the enchiladas suiza with both red and green sauce. If you want to order an appetizer, their guac and mushrooms con chile seco are my picks. Our experience entailed poor service, mediocre food (one incorrect order; sans apology from waiter, but blamed the cook instead... not a good look), mediocre drinks, and all around not a good experience. I actually crave this place - it's one of the few places in this area that makes a good margarita. If you come here you absolutely must order (at least) one! You won't regret it. My team loved coming here for lunches because it was nearby and casual with plenty of seating for large parties. My favorite dishes are the chicken soups. There are two in particular - both come with avocado and are GIGANTIC portions! Totally worth the price, I can never even come close to finishing it. I also really appreciate that they do chips & salsa on the house. I'm seeing more and more restaurants charge for this and it's really unfortunate as that's one of the things that draws me into a Mexican restaurant! Unlimited chips & salsa + a strong margarita. If that doesn't sound good to you, then you've never been to a good Mexican restaurant. It should be noted that it is a bit dark inside here so it may make for a good date night! There's a very tiny bar up front that only seats about 4/5 peoples and a few outdoor tables in the front of the restaurant. The house specials are truly special. I highly recommend the pollo guajillo. It is flavorful, chicken is amazingly tender, and the accompanying tortillas and sides are must sabrosos!! I'm not fully convinced I want to give Vive Sol four stars, but read on. Like other folks have said, you get three kinds of salsa with your chips. The two green ones I thought were great (anyone know what they are? I know someone here said one is green tomatillo), but I wasn't a fan of the red one. Ordered the carne asada con salsa antigua (actually, it just occurs to me that I didn't actually get any salsa with my order, so dropping it half a star). I think I was expecting more heavily flavored steak, so when I tried it I was a bit disappointed on how borderline bland it was. Eaten as a whole though, with the guac, rice, roasted peppers, and tons of the two green salsas, it was pretty amazing. Though, I suspect much of that is thanks to the salsa itself. Service is fast, friendly, and attentive. A bit too expensive though for what it is I feel. I also kind of wish they didn't dim the lights as much as they did: I'm the kind of person who likes to be able to see his food clearly. read more

After looking over Yelp for a new place to try in Mountain View, I ended up at this restaurant and it was a great experience. You really have to keep an eye out for it on El Camino, and there is just a small parking lot in the very back, so I highly recommend non-peak hours if you don't like hassling with waiting for a parking spot. They have two dining areas, a covered all outdoor dining area to one side that is really lovely and a regular indoor restaurant. We ate inside this time. The decor is really fantastic and creates a great ambiance. They have nice big windows and they had them open during the summer when we went, which created a great breeze. The have an entrance through the restaurant in the back from the parking lot and off El Camino too. There is also a full bar. The support staff service was great. We got a bottle of water on our table, a basket of chips and 3 different kinds of salsa asap with the menus. The support staff would consistently swing by and offer refills of water from the bottle, extra salsa of the one we preferred more than others, and more and more chips. The server was ok, kind of aloof and actually pretty slow to respond. It took awhile to get our order taken, and also for the bill to arrive. We had to flag down our server via the support staff actually, to make it happen. Without the support staff helping so much, I really am not sure that I would have enjoyed the experience so much with the quality of the service from just the server. The food was awesome!! The rice is vegetarian, which is great. A lot of mexican restaurants actually use chicken broth, but I inquired and this place does not. I ordered some cheese enchiladas mexicanas and the sauce and everything was really delicious. It was just enough food too, not too much or too little. My husband ordered the seafood soup with corn dumplings in it and he loved it. The only thing is they don't remove the shrimp tails so you have to handle them when they are quite hot from the soup's heat - which isn't super fun and take them off. Overall, it was great. The prices were very good too. I will definitely be back and its going on my list of top places when I want mexican food in Mountain View. My coworkers and I came here during lunch and typically its not busy or that's what my co worker had told me. It took us 5 to 10 min to get seated which is understandable since we were a party of 7 and they needed to put tables together. The waiter provided us with chips and 3 different types of salsa and you can tell the different between these chips from other places these chips are really fresh crisp salsa was awesome as well. I had ordered this chicken with rice and black re fried beans. It takes about 30 to 40 min to get my food my lunch are only an hour long and my co worker needed to come back to work for a meeting. After we ate we had paid the bill 3 credit cards and the rest cash. The credit card process was not that difficult we stated 20 bucks on each card and pay the rest in cash. The waiter runs out of the and catches us while we are leaving and stated we did not pay the bill in full. to sum the story up. The waiter had dropped one of the receipts for the credit card and he was about to charge us again for the food. Gourmet Mexican Food redefined! This is by far our FAVORITE restaurant in whole BAY AREA. We were blown away by the food when we tried it for first time last year. They serve Puebla mexican cuisine, unique creations and purely enchanting flavors. We liked the Mountain view food much much better than Palo Alto one. We love their Pampano A La Mulata- Barimudi fish wrapped in cream based sauce and loads of different pepers (sundried, roasted and deep fried). Have also tried Camarones A La Diabla Camarones Al Chipotle or with Salsa Nueva Its always been a wonderful experience. Tried their milk cake dessert with berries. It was out of the world, light and fluffy. Decor: The place is cozy and dimly lit. Feels very intimate for date nights. Bar: Margaritas are out of the world. One was enough to lift you to a differnt level. Salsa: Love Love their salsas! Green one was yummiest. Down side is you tend to eat a little too much and kill your own appetite for the star items! Service: Very attentive service. You feel well attended. Restaurant is always busy, and they do not take reservations. I'd been doing take out prior since I don't care for the indoor ambiance so everything was the same delicious food and drinks (burrito mole, cilantro shrimp, nachos). Try the cheese and chorizo stuffed pork if you like creamy tangy sauce with onion. Little point in critiquing minor points of food during pandemic as I'm just happy to have this neighborhood restaurant back. Came here for my first time the other day. We were greeted nicely at the door and seated promptly. Our server was courteous and always made we had water and fresh chips and salsa at the table! My friend and I had their house margarita and habanero margarita. Both were delicious with a decent amount of tequila inside. I had their enchilada with molé sauce, and I was so pleased with how it turned out. Their molé is rich, creamy and delicious! I would definitely recommend this place to a friend and plan on going back soon! Only bad part we didn't enjoy was the jerk that decided to block us in our parking spot. Not sure why employees didn't seem to mind the random parking in the middle of the lot with no spots that ended up blocking customers in, but they let it happen. Love love love this place. Beautifully decorated with a really nice outdoor eating area, equipted with its own bar. Never a long wait and top-notch margaritas to pass the time. The margaritas come in large red wine glasses and are made with freshly squeezed juice. We have had excellent service everytime, from the beautiful, welcoming hosteses to the superb servers. Ask for Jose, who also goes by JJ. He has been there a long time and has great recommendations and a cool vibe. Summing up the food would be high-end, traditional Mexican food. The three salsas that come to your table with chips are soooooo good. My favorite dish, is a vegetarian enchilada plate, that is smothered in black beans. The mixture of the veggies inside, how they grill the corn tortillas and the the yummy toppings on top, make for lots of deliciousness. We always order the guacamole, also really good. My boyfriend ovders veggie fajitas (not on the menu), quite often and they are just as delicious. Hm... Has there been a change of ownership? In the last year, i feel like service and food quality has been going down. How do i know? The parking lot isn't as busy at it used to be. Not only that, in the men's bathroom, 3 out of 4 lights were out and there were cobwebs on the other bulb. That never used to happen when Alaina (Elena) used to run the restaurant. We waited for such a long time for our food to arrive - it was obvious they had forgotten about our order. To me, the wait staff was not on top of their game last night. Also, the food isn't as spicy/flavorful as it used to be - sigh. I've been going to this restaurant for 20 years so maybe its best days are behind it. read more
