The Shrimp Xochitl lives up to the hype as the best dish. Really unique flavor I have not had anywhere else. The other dishes we've had like beef enchiladas were all solid, but less memorable. I'm taking off a star because service was so incredibly slow last time we went in. With so many amazing restaurants on Castro, not sure when we'll make it back to this one. We wanted to try a New Mexican spot and we ordered takeout and tried the grilled seasonal veggie burrito and pork enchiladas. Unfortunately, what we received didn't match the menu description. The burrito was essentially a tortilla with what appeared to be frozen mixed vegetables (see photos), with the rice and beans served on the side instead of wrapped inside. Rounding up from 2.5 stars. Agave wasn't impressive for me and The Wife. Our order was simple, nachos with no meat for me and a beer, and chicken fajitas for her. The nachos were fine, although the jalapenos were only present in the sauce. The fajitas were too spicy, and overloaded with veggies that felt strange there - broccoli, carrots, squash. Went on a Sunday night -- the restaurant was empty. Service was fast, but unfortunately, the food and drinks were pretty average. I ordered the guava jalapeño margarita, but it had little to no guava or jalapeño flavor. On the food side, they do offer a good number of vegetarian dishes. We ordered the veggie fajitas, and I was super disappointed. The veggies were absolutely bland and lacked any spices -- it seriously felt like frozen mixed veggies microwaved and thrown on a sizzling plate. No spices, no flavor. The atmosphere was very nice and wbuckman. The food was very decent. I'm i'm on Quito so I did not have rice and beans. I substituted that for a salad which is nice. My wife had the taquitos and said they were decent. But she's had better and the rice and beans were pretty good. Came here 8:30pm on a friday night with a party of 10. Service was complete 10/10. my party can be a bit dysfunctional but Francisco helped us out so much and was very patient and super professional with everything. they serve chips and 2 different salsas when seated. we ordered fried calamari because duh! and got to try their ceviche which was light and flavorful! and they have a wide variety of cocktails and margaritas selection! my favorite was definitely the mezcalita (if you have a more smokier tequila palette) and no they are not skimping on the alcohol you taste it :)) portions are big! i ordered the chicken enchiladas verano with green sauce. filled with lots of protein and was juicy and not dry at all paired with their mexican rice. and listen i am very picky with my rice and it was 10/10 fluffy, light flavor, and moist. big shout out to everyone that helped out my party and i. come visit and try this place out. i feel like where this place is located its easy to just walk past but its definitely family homey vibes! good place to have a quick bite or to catch up with friends and family!!! read more

I was in the area for sweets but is seems I ended up here for food with the family, here is what we sampled and how it all faired Baja tacos - son ordered this dish, he stated other then it being piping hot it was just ok flavor wise Fajitas with steak - decently sliced portion of steak, tasted like grilled, it was just ok, seems oddly food was rushed to make, steak was semi chewy, not tender, the bell peppers were not fully cooked, rice was slightly hard like it had been sitting out, beans were ok My daughter sampled the cheese quesadilla - she more or less gave me the face of "meh" lol, i'm like dude it is just cheese and a corn torilla, hahha but she said mom can make better at home smh Chile Relleno with 2 shrimp tacos as a plate - chile relleno was on the smaller end, cheese filled, it was just ok, rice same as above slightly hard, beans ok, shrimp was just ok, I was able to finish the one the other could not finish it since I was turned off by the taste of the other things on my plate, it was not super busy it was mid day, maybe 5 patrons total not including us, they were very responsive if we needed water refills or anything else but the food for us was just ok if not below par Probably will have to sample other restaurants in the area, this one did not hit any of the marks we usually expect at latin restaurant the side of guac and chips with salsa was good, salsa and chips were fresh, slight kick on the salsa, I would go back for that salsa, the wife said the tamarindo margarita was just ok, I tried for the michelada but they said they didnt have it smh food *** price $$ service **** helpful, responsive ambiance **** large, clean, loud music read more

We ended up at Agave Mexican Bistro last weekend after finding Casa Lupe closed and my 10 year old goddaughter still wanted Mexican food. After being seated and looking at the menu, we almost left. There is no kids menu so she had to order from the regular menu. A plain cheese quesadilla was $16.50 and came with no sides, just cheese in a tortilla. Nearly $17 (plus tax and tip) for that seemed unreasonable, especially with no rice or beans included. She decided on just a side of rice (she loves Mexican rice) that she ate with the chips they give you. I wasn't a fan of the potatoes in the rice. That was a first for me. She wasn't either but they were easy to pick out. I was also disappointed there were no combo options either, which is common at many Mexican restaurants. The chicken taquitos were pretty good though. The menu makes it seems as if they also do not come with rice/beans but they do. The reason we had a positive experience was because of our server. He noticed our reaction when we asked about the quesadilla (to make sure we had read and understood it right) and tried all he could to turn it into a positive experience. He was attentive, funny, and really improved the experience as a whole. I wish I had gotten his name so I could give him a proper shoutout. He was working Sunday September 14 around 3 pm. Agave's been a staple for me in downtown Mountain View for a while. Stopped back in today and it sadly seems to not be as popular as it once was! My favorite dish here is the pork flautas. Portion size has definitely gotten smaller, but with a starter of chips I left filled. I tried the jamaica today which was also refreshing and not too sweet. I also recommend the mole which is full of rich flavor. Service here is always very nice, we've got our regular waiters who make an effort to make us feel welcome everytime. They used to have outdoor patio seating into the street. It wasn't there today (perhaps for the winter?) but I would love to see this back as it's a huge plus when dining in downtown! Prices can be steep for Mexican food, coming out to about $36 per person with 1 non alcoholic drink each, tax, and tip. read more

It wasn't clear when we came in what we needed to do since there was no host/hostess so we tried to flag down the bartender to ask for seating. They told us we could sit anywhere so we picked a table near the front. They didn't bring out any water for us so after about 10 minutes, we asked to have some (after we placed our order). We ordered some queso fondito, shrimp tacos and shrimp enchiladas and the dropped off some chips and salsa (red and green). The queso was a lot thicker than I'm used to and almost seemed to go solid after being on the table for about 5 minutes. Noticed that the cast iron plate it was served in wasn't hot at all so that likely caused it to not stay more liquid. The tacos were alright but the enchiladas just had shrimp in them with some cheese on top. Was expecting some type of sauce they'd come with or be soaked in. This spot is pretty close to my work, so I tend to order takeout pretty regularly. Their staff is always super nice, and honestly, it's always somewhat empty even though it's in a very nice downtown area. I typically order the enjococado burrito or chicken tortilla soup. Chicken tortilla soup is pretty standard, not a lot of interesting things there other than the chile. Now, the enjococado burrito/enchilada is another story!! I love that sauce they top it with; it kind of reminds me of a Indian curry. Anyways, I love it; maybe you'll love it too! read more

Their cool spot, tequila galore, and some good eats easily reel me in again and again. Located at the corner of Castro and Villa Streets, the restaurant does not have a private lot for parking, but a public lot is just a two-minute walk away. Metered spots are also available along Villa and its crossing streets. The venue, itself, is spacious with two indoor dining rooms and an outdoor patio, all of which can host parties and/or groups. Check out their bar for tequila galore. AGAVE serves traditional Mexican fare with some items that will make your mouth water and boasts an array of MARGARITA OFFERINGS with drinks that will quench your thirst. Below are just a few items that we have ordered. DR "J" - Tasty and strong, according to Mom. Nothing wrong with that! Bring on the buzz!! Strawberry FRUIT MARGARITA - Served in a big goblet with a salted rim, I ordered this drink after seeing a neighbouring table order a round for everyone in their party. They said that it was THE BEST Strawberry MARGARITA with no taste of alchohol. I second their opinion. Horchata - A little too heavy on the cinnamon, but otherwise a good, tall pour. NACHOS (regular and chicken) - YUMMY! This is a great STARTER topped with beans, s/cream, cheese, pico de gallo, guacamole. The full size is so generous that it can be served as a meal to share between two to three persons. I highly recommend ordering this with chicken, it's my fave here! I will start ordering it as my entrée from now on. CALAMARI - Nicely golden & crispy. QUESO FUNDIDO - A major favourite of our Happy Hour party group. CEVICHE - Another popularly liked COMIENZO by our Happy Hour party group. SHRIMP COCKTAIL - This appetizer did not look appealing to me, so I did not touch it. QUESADILLA (chicken) - Very good, packed with shredded chicken. FLAUTAS (beef) - Two big generous portions, but not as crispy as I would have liked it because the wrapping is flour tortilla. If you want crunch, I recommend the TAQUITOS instead of the FLAUTAS. TAQUITOS (chicken) - 3 Nice and crispy rolled tacos, basically. This is a great choice. It's no wonder that it's listed in the FAVORITES / FAVORITOS section of the menu. BAJA FISH TACO (a la carte) - Auntie Marissa gave this two thumbs up. CHILE VERDE - "Not great" per Mom. Ouch. CHURROS - Ok, but a little on the bland side, according to V. FLAN - My family enjoyed this Mexican custard dessert, even V, to my surprise. Service is always great to excellent here. The servers are consistently friendly, patient, and warm. My family has enjoyed their jovial hospitality full of jokes and laughter. Stopped in on a Saturday afternoon after a date at the Red Rock Cafe across the street. The restaurant is larger than it looks made up of their store fronts with a pass through at the rear. Greeted and seated at a high top near the entrance, I asked whether the nachos were made with queso sauce or real shredded cheese. I was pleased to find it was Monterey Jack. I ordered a full order of nachos with shredded chicken and it did not disappoint. It was breast meat shredded and salted nicely. The portion was generous. I took half the order to-go for dinner. I paired the nachos with a Piña Granate Margarita, made with Milagros Silver tequila, pineapple and pomegranate juice, on the rocks of course, and no one asked about salt; exactly as it should be. I had the cheese ones. Grandaughter had chicken tacos, she said they lacked flavor but were ok. Grandson ordered carne asada nachos and liked it. Came here for Happy Hour. The Happy Hour Menu listed on the restaurant website is not current as the prices were not accurate. This review and menu is as of 1/12/24. My Casa Margarita was very good, and at $8, I'd consider this a deal. My partner's beer was an even better deal at $4. Complimentary chips and salsa. The food we ordered however, was just okay. The 2 chicken taco's ($8.95) were a great serving size, but just okay. We also ordered the Chori-papas ($9.95), but it was really dry. I think the chorizo might have been slightly overcooked? This place has the best enchiladas around - hands down! The servers are always super friendly and their food is amazing. They recently started a happy hour as well which is awesome because their cheladas and micheladas are tasty. The food came out pretty quickly, but the flavors were just average. - Baja fish tacos: the fish was fried well, rightly fried and it came hot, which was good. However it had too much cabbage, not any other fresh ingredients with not much flavor. Also it only has one tortilla, which fell apart quickly as you took couple of bites. - Nachos: carnitas nachos. it was fine, nothing memorable. They were generous with the amount of meat and I enjoyed the flavor. It came with good salsa & guacamole. However it had too much beans. They had a full layer of beans at the bottom. Great place for authentic Mexican food came here with my family we ordered the Camarones xochitl , enchiladas mole and the enchiladas marinas everything was so rich and flavorful. This used to be my favorite restaurant back in the day- 2010- 2015 era. They used to give you warm chips and three kinds of salsas. The food options were more unique and the food came out fresh and tasty! But unfortunately the quality of the food is not there. Staff is still super friendly, drinks are amazing, menu is the same- but the food isn't as good and the chips are not warm. In our recent visit, I ordered the mahi fish, and my bf had the enchiladas suizas with chicken. I guess the chef was in a bad mood or something because our food was SPICY! Now we are Latino and can take spicy but this was crazy. My food came with jalapeño but it was waaaay too much I guess. The mahi was also overcooked- and not as flaky. Maybe not completely fresh either. I could not finish it. And my boyfriend also didn't really enjoy his enchiladas and had a tummy ache the next day from the burn. I still have warm feelings towards this place- but I think they need to perhaps minimize their menu and focus on quality. Still- staff is kind and drinks on point. read more

Came here on the last Saturday with temperatures around 82 degrees for an early dinner. Outdoor dining on closed off Castro street. They do have indoor dining, with overhead TVs blaring out the baseball playoffs. Unfortunately the Giants were eliminated by the hated Dodgers, so the indoor area is vacant with the guys in blue playing. Or was it the coronavirus spooking everyone? Wife orders the $19 Enchiladas Mole, while I get the $23 chicken frijita, up from $20 in 2018. Luis brings us water to go with a complimentary large bowl of chips and two cups of different salsa: spicy hot red salsa, and spicy hot green salsa.  No mild salsa, and no picco de gallo salsa.  But at least it is complimentary with the meal, as some places charge for chips. The Enchiladas Mole come with two chicken enchiladas covered with a dark brown chocolate like sauce. Wife loves Mole, and likes this version.  On the side were Mexican rice, black beans, and a closed container of freshly cooked heated corn tortillas. Here they offer you a choice of black beans, refried beans, or pinto beans. Other places may only offer refried beans My dish is the standard chicken frijita, on a hot plate, with green peppers, zuchini, red peppers, sliced carrots, mushrooms, onions and thin slices of white chicken meat.  Could have used more chicken, but otherwise the dish met my standards.  On the side were refried beans, Mexican rice, guacamole, sour cream and tomato. The corn tortillas appear to be hand made, and are delicious, and firm, not falling apart in your hand. Only the tortillas are much smaller than I expected, about 5" in diameter, whereas the closed container is 8" in diameter. They short changed me 3" of tortilla! One of the few places still accepting the Entertainment coupons, in this case $10 off the bill for two entries. Last year at this time, they were accepting the coupons, but only for indoor dining. But the county banned indoor dining, due to the virus, leaving us holding Entertainment coupons we couldn't use. read more

Can't believe for all these years that I went to Castro but never been to this place. Outdoor seating took up the entire Castro street and it was nice and breezy sitting outside. Service was good, both the bus boy and waiter attended to us. We ordered a chef's salad with chicken ($9+$9), the portion was big and the amount of chicken was generous and looked juicy and not over cooked. The steak burrito had the choice of covered by cheese and it tasted good, lots of beef cubes inside. I have to highlight that their Spanish rice is excellent, good flavor and I saw onion, tomato and bell pepper mixed in. Celebrated a college friend's birthday last month, just getting around to write the review. Since he was the man of the hour, he picked Agave. This was my first time trying this joint and it was pretty good. The fried calamari was excellent and I was surprised it was on the menu. My chicken burrito was also good. My buddy has a quesadilla and loved it. We washed all that Mexican goodness down with pitcher of Cadillac margaritas. Hay, chihuahua!! We have been coming to Agave for over 20 years, when it was on Shoreline Blvd (as Fiesta Del Mar). I have to say this place is still one of my favorites, the food is amazing, the workers are friendly, we always have great conversations because they always remember us and ask about our children, who are now young adults. This is a must if you're looking for great food, drinks and a family friendly atmosphere. I'd give it 10 stars if I could. read more
