We were driving through Sunnyvale the other day and were looking for a good Mexican place. Roberto's is a sports bar that specializes in margaritas and other alcoholic drinks. However don't overlook how good their food is. We tried a few of their specialties and my daughter had her usual cheese quesadilla with refried beans. The server was great and very helpful. He recommended a few dishes which we ended up trying. First, the chips and salsa here are great. The chips are very crispy and seem like they're made in house. The salsas taste pretty fresh as well. I ordered the Shrimp Al Tequila. I've never seen a dish like this on a menu, so I thought I'd try it. It has a very, very warm spicy heat to it. You can taste the flavors from the tequila and the capers and olives. It's a wonderful dish, although I wish there were more shrimp on it! My wife had the Pollo. Al Xocohoqui (I know I'm misspelling that). The sauce here is rich, mild in spice, creamy and nutty. My daughter's quesadilla was actually one of the best I've ever had. The cheese blend is just really good and the tortilla is perfectly fried on both sides. The real star though is their flan. Holy moly was this incredible. Was craving some Mexican food, which I think is just some madness trickled down into my genes de mi Abuelita, but alas, at least this affliction is para comida muy delicioso, no!? Roberto's Cantina is a local favorite here in Sunnyvale downtown. I've been here before and was impressed, so when a friend suggested we go here for a nice Sunday lunch, I didn't hesitate. The whole experience feels like you are dining at someone's home. Pretty good seating outside, and the service is always warm, friendly, and fast. We ordered fish tacos and the Al Chipotle Shrimp. Both were delicious. Their corn tortillas were soft and fresh. And of course, there are chips and salsa for each table on the house. Their hot salsa is legit spicy. We also had the House margarita pitcher. It serves about four people and was refreshingly good. We ended the meal with their flan - it was the bomb! Fresh, creamy, almost cheesecake-like texture - we loved it so much, we ordered seconds. The owner, Roberto, is a nice guy. He came to our table a few times to check on us. This place has decent mexican food. I got the shrimp fajitas. I think flavor profile wise everything is well seasoned. My only complaint is that my shrimp to veggie ratio was pretty bad and I wish I got more shrimp. Beans and rice were great. read more

Great service and lively dinner spot! Love that they had soccer games playing on the TVs as well. They give complimentary chips and salsa, I really enjoyed the green! It was super refreshing and had lots of good flavor. I tried the birria de res. The meat was super tender and they were not stingy with the portion at all. The broth was also really tasty and I liked the side of rice/beans/tortillas it came with too. Everything was well seasoned and flavorful. I also really enjoyed their frozen strawberry margarita. What can I say... I visit Roberto's every few weeks post-OTF workout. I show up sweaty and hungry and always get a warm welcome from Roberto Sr and his staff and family! Hector usually takes my order with a smile and Roberto Jr and Tomas are attending the bar or customers with equally joyful energy. Talk about an endearing place to come just for the love! As someone who LOVES Mexican food and has eaten at many locations throughout the Bay Area, the United States, and in Mexico, this place falls short (IMHO). I came in on a Thursday afternoon at high noon for lunch. The only people in the restaurant were a couple in the corner, myself, and the kitchen and wait staff. Another gentleman came in shortly after I was seated. After nearly an hour here, no one else showed up. This should have been my first clue. Let's start with the positive aspects first. The restaurant is very clean. Service is fast and friendly. The bar is well stocked. The prices are on par for the Bay Area. They delivered my beer (in a bottle) along with a frosted glass (very nice touch). Complimentary chips and two types of salsa accompanied my beer. The tomatillo salsa was my favorite. Now let's get to the less than average food. I ordered a two item combo. This consisted of a chicken enchilada, a chili relleno, refried beans, and Mexican rice. The refried beans were extremely soupy and watery. The rice was unusual. It had corn kernels and chunks of pineapple. Overall, fairly bland in flavor. The chicken enchilada was tiny. The chicken tasted roasted but lacked seasoning of any kind. The tortilla was covered in a very bland red sauce. If there was any cheese, it certainly wasn't noticeable. The chili relleno was the most egregious item on the plate. It was a pablano chili that was split open, filled with a block of cheese and covered with a very bland, thin and watery red sauce. The chili relleno was not battered. Furthermore , because the chili relleno was not deep fried in batter, the cheese was not hot and melted. Very lackluster. Moreover, everything was not very hot. No steam. Cooled off quickly while eating. As a side note, each item on the plate came in a small ramekin. Instead of one plate to wash, now they have four separate dishes to wash. Odd, inefficient, and I wonder if this is a way for them to provide extra work to the dishwasher - because this restaurant is hardly busy at all. If you're a fan of bland, hospital grade food, this is the place for you. If you're looking for authentic, robust Mexican cuisine, go somewhere else because you're not going to find it here. read more

This is our go to Mexican place in Sunnyvale! Any time we are looking for somewhere with consistently good food, service, and vibes, Roberto's is our stop! I've always enjoyed everything on the menu here. Food favorites are the guacamole, queso fundido, cheese enchiladas, and Birria quesadilla. My boyfriend loves their carnitas, he's had it in a burrito, on a combo plate, and he tried it on tostadas today! Their salsas they make here are also delicious!! We walked into Roberto's about 5:00pm, settled on a small table and placed our orders, Shrimp Fajitas for me and Chicken Mole for my friend. We received an Enchilada Platter and Chicken Fajitas, which were quickly exchanged for the correct ones. My friend's Mole was "okay" and my Fajitas were... odd. Never had broccoli and zucchini in my fajitas before this, but I appreciate good veggies so went with it. Except it was all without the usual zesty fajita flavor, so super bland. The veggies were cooked perfectly though, and the accompanying black beans, rice & tortillas were tasty. My diet coke had a rather chemical (or bleach?) smell/taste so they took it back. Asked if they sold soda by the can and was told no. Oh well. PLUSES: great location on the Avenue, homey decor, friendly staff. Had a Satur[date] here. We were seated on the outdoor patio and had a chance to experience the live music performance that entertained the entire block. I ordered the Shrimp Ceviche and my date ordered the Steak Ranchero. We also ordered a pitcher of Mi Tierra (tequila anejo and gran citron) to share. The mole was not good honestly you can literally taste when is from the can and the rice is just so dry the beans are the only good thing on it. If you wanna eat chile relleno and if you are thinking is like the one your mom used to make nope think again. Overall the food is not authentic and everything takes like it is out of a can food. On the order of Pollo Al Xocoqui, the serving of chicken was generous and the sauce was flavorful. Overall the food was filling and satisfying. The service was inattentive. I tried their ceviche, fish tacos and the Top Shelf Margarita. The drink was good and has a nice kick to it. Bonus is that it didn't give me a headache, just a nice buzz. The ceviche is more on the lime and spicy side. It has fish for the meat. The fish taco was good enough, but I have tried better options. Overall it's the experience, the food, and the drink coming together that earned them a 4. It's also nice that they are open when most of the other restaurants are closed between 2pm-5pm.
