The food here is incredibly bland and tastes like it came out of a can. There's basically no spice in anything, the beef taco filling reminded me of Manwich, and the chicken enchilada had a gross metallic flavor to it. The refried beans were under-seasoned and super runny. Basically I found nothing to like about the food here. For years I've felt guilty every time I went to the Taco Bell next door thinking, why am I going here when there's a real Mexican restaurant right over there? But now I know that Taco Bell is somehow better than this place. (Of course there are also many other locally-owned taquerias around which are even better.) The people who work here (who I think may be the owners) are super friendly and nice, and the environment is just like the Mexican restaurants I grew up with in the Southwest, but the food is the most important thing and they missed by a country mile. Basically I feel like this place was probably good at one time but they've compromised on the quality while trying to make things more palatable to people who don't actually like Mexican food, and at that point, why bother? read more

We each ordered the #14, 3 chicken chimichangas with rice and beans. A total waste of $75. They were very dry and tasteless. There was nothing inside of them but dry, overcooked chicken with no seasoning. I thought there was supposed to be rice or beans or something inside. I would've sent it back, but we already had once, because they brought the wrong order the first time, and I didn't want to be a bother. We just ate what we could and left. I visited Viva Mexico at 11:30 AM as our dog was being washed at the business next door. It simply was not good. The visit started with waiting for what felt like an eternity, to be sat. (There was one table in the restaurant). Why couldn't someone be ready to seat incoming guests. There were at least two front of the house employees present. The plate of chips, beans and salsa were good, as I did enjoyed the appetizer that was provided. I have had a craving for enchiladas recently, and so that was my choice of meals. It was just fair. I needed my knife to cut the tortilla and chicken. The chicken had zero flavor and was in clumps, thus needing the knife. The tortilla was dense as well. The rice was fair, but what was the worst of the meal were the black beans. The picture is attached, as they appeared to be poured out of can and rinsed and served. No flavor at all. The margarita was actually pretty good, and had a good balance of liquors and mix. I have to give the visit one star though as there seems to be a lack of focus on the food and zero focus on guests entering the restaurant. One of my favorite places to grab some Mexican food for a reasonable price. The fajitas or chimichangas are my go to choices. The wait staff are always super attentive and fast to get you everything you need. The food is absolutely delicious, always served hot! Large portion sizes for reasonable prices. I am always so stuffed after leaving there. My favorite items are the shrimp fajitas, (#14) 3 chicken chimichangas with rice and beans, and the carne asada, and they have great chips and salsa served with refried beans with shredded cheese. Big shout out to Javier who always recognizes us, seats us as soon as we come in, and is ready to get us some drinks. The staff are super kind. These one star reviews almost scared me off! But I'm glad I tried them anyway, they were great. Ordered via Uber eats and I got the chimichanga and cheese and chips. Most places don't do queso dip or ground beef chimichangas, so that was refreshing right off. Very generous portions, especially with the rice and beans. Only taking a star away because I wish they let you add sour cream or avocado on the side - they slather it on the burrito and not only does that make it soggy faster, but I don't like avocado at all so that side was a little more meh for me. We have been coming to Viva Mexico for years. Like someone said in another review, when we arrive we're treated like family! They always know how we like our Margaritas (blended or rocks, who wants salt and who doesn't, etc.), and they even know what we are going to order most of the time. Javier and Joel let us practice our middling Spanish every time we come, which makes the visit even more fun. And, the food is great! Tortilla soup was bad. Old chewy dry chicken, very little. Mostly soggy whole tortilla chips and a few chunks of avocado. Person on phone sounded like he couldn't care less. I've always gotten tortilla soup with the tortilla seperately so it doesn't get soggy. This soup was terrible. All cheese sunk to the bottom and clung to a spoon like no tomorrow. Cheese should have also been separate. The salsa that's came with was so watery. Gross. Used to love this spot 15 years ago. Chips tasted old. Feel like all ingredients were very old. My mother has been going to Viva Mexico since 1985 when they were in a different location in White Center. She has known all of the servers for many years and every year we go there for her birthday as she is a regular customer and they offer her every year a free birthday drink. This year the server was very rude and disrespectful his name was Joel. He continue to ignore us after a woman server we had never seen before I had seated us. Would walk the other direction we were trying to ask for simple things like more salsa while waiting for food. And declining my mother her birthday drink when this is a special thing we like to do every year. He was yelling at my mother. The last time we visited with a big group was for my sister's birthday in April , she had not been there in many years so we took her and her kids there to eat for her birthday. She realized that the food was not what she expected it was not made correctly as she remembered so she got the service attention (Same server) since she had only took him one bite of her food, ask him if she could get a discount or something different and he declined and was very rude. We then asked to talk to the manager, and he just rudely I am the manager. He then proceeded when taking plates to purposely knock over water all over the table getting on my sisters food and rudely say sorry as if he didn't even want to. If you're the older or the manager of this location I would love to speak with you about these two visits it was very disappointing to me and my family this was a place we really like to come and now we do not feel welcome. read more

We've been going to this place since we moved to Dupont in 2009. The location, service and building (and truly beautiful/distinct decor) has been the same, but the food started out not so great (didn't go back very often). Around 7 years ago, there seemed to be a change in menu, and POOF! Now easily our favorite Mexican food place. In particular, I am a mole fanatic and this is like no other/so authentic. We were there recently with a larger party and everyone ordered different things and raved about them (wife usually gets fajitas and ordered the fajitas salad and loved it). (Ya know..where it explodes and becomes little tendons of chewy strips.) The beef in the chalupa might have been squeezed from a tube. I've never seen beef look that color or consistency. Viva is usually always good food nothing fancy it doesn't even have a good presentation but you know its going to agree with your taste buds. To me its like eating at Azteca but Azteca is to far so this is just fine. To go orders, I get to still have a side of chips and salsa which is thoughtful because you get them when you're there and I notice some places don't put that in there as a to go order. The staff usually is always nice and when I ordered over the phone this time, the guy was really nice and helpful since I didn't have a menu. We stopped in here after driving past it countless times over the years, always curious as to whether the food was any good. We came in to order some drinks and get food to go. The restaurant itself is cute. It's very clean and well-kept with pretty decor. It's also quite large. For being so early on a Friday, the place was pretty busy. People constantly trickled in, some in large groups. The service was great; the waiter was friendly and attentive. For drinks, we ordered the mango margarita and some wine. Most other Mexican restaurants in the area have happy hour specials on margaritas. That wasn't the case here. Despite coming at around 4:30 on a Friday, when you'd expect happy hour specials, the margaritas were still priced at $5 for the small and $8 for the large. While the margarita tasted good, it was expensive compared to other places in the area. And unlike other reviewers, I didn't find the margarita to be strong, either. In fact, quite the opposite. For food, we ordered the #2 (enchilada and chimichanga) and #11 (enchilada and burrito) combinations, and the arroz con pollo. Like other Mexican places, they also gave us complimentary chips, salsa, and refried beans. The chips were good compared to other places. They were lighter and crispier. The salsa was pretty decent too. Milder than I prefer, but still good. Those that ordered the #2 and #11 were pretty happy with what they got. They ordered the enchiladas with tomatillo sauce and said the sauce itself was great, though more sauce should have definitely been added because the enchiladas were a bit on the dry side. They asked for more tomatillo sauce to add later after seeing how the dishes were lacking in sauce. As for the arroz con pollo, it was horribly disappointing. The rice was ultra dry, undercooked, and under-seasoned. The chicken, too, was bland, but overcooked. Rather than simmering the chicken with the rice in a flavorful sauce, it seemed as though they just heaped some dry, pre-made, under-cooked rice onto a plate, and added pre-cooked, dry chicken pieces to the top when it was ready to serve. Moreover, given that there was literally nothing else to the dish but a small portion of rice and a paltry serving of chicken (no cheese and no veggies of any kind), $15 was incredibly steep. I definitely would not recommend ordering the arroz con pollo. Overall, if you're looking for mediocre Mexican food and a cute atmosphere, this is your place. However, I think there are other better, less expensive Mexican places in the area, so I can't see coming back any time soon. read more

Today I went with my family to eat at viva mexico my chile RELLENO didn't have any filling! When I asked our server about it he said " oh yes that's how we do it here." ???? How do you making a Chile relleno without the relleno? So I asked if i could have a discount since this isn't explained on the menu and he refused I asked for a manager and he said no. He went back to the kitchen where a heard loud laughter. Much later he came back with an over stuffed Chile relleno but I never asked for it to be remade. I was no longer interested after his rudeness. I told him I didn't want that. Then to blow my mind with shock while removing our plates he knocked over our waters didn't stop as the water flooded my area of the table including getting my phone wet. He didn't stop he just walked away, when I told him what he has done he said a very rude unapologetic sorry. I am completely shocked with this servers/waiters service. Sometimes a person craves shitty Mexican food, the kind that you know you'll regret the moment you eat it because it's a gut bomb in the making. When I tried Viva Mexico, I just wanted an ooey-gooey platter of nachos and was ready to accept my consequences. So I ordered a platter of Nachos Mexicanos and waited while I enjoyed the smell of fajitas in the air. What I received was an abomination to nachos everywhere, and a huge disappointment. The major offense: the tortilla chips were burned. How they even thought of serving this is beyond me. Then they barely had any cheese on the nachos, a core ingredient of the dish. What was on the platter was no longer ooey-gooey but burnt to a crisp as well. Next, the garnish. The way the onion was chopped made me feel like I was eating a whole onion on each chip. Obviously that's an exaggeration but a finer chop would have been appreciated. I barely had any chopped tomato and the dollops of sour cream and guacamole were barely there as well. Not to mention, I could see clear to the bottom of the platter before I even dug in. I have friends that love this place and apparently you need to know what to order. I don't know about you but if a Mexican restaurant can't master nachos, what's the point of even trying anything else? At least it wasn't a major meal and I didn't spend that much money there.
