I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Kalie McCartin and her very kind and patient vision therapists! After only a few sessions I began to notice improvements and, after 12 sessions (as of mid September 2026), the improvements are still growing I am very excited to continue treatment and this journey to regaining great eyesight again. My previous optometrist referred me to Dr. McCartin after doing her best to help me sort out my vision issues which have been slowly worsening over time. I've seen many different eye doctors over the last 10-15 years, including very well respected Ophthalmologists at the prestigious Jules Stein institute at UCLA and Dr. McCartin is the first and only doctor who has been able to help! Her sheer brilliance and passion for what she does was apparent from my first visit to her WLA office. I had no idea that the declining state of my vision had been, incrementally, contributing to a wide variety of changes in my life, both socially and psychologically, and I'm really looking forward to engaging in life again the way I used to. Thank you for everything!! read more

I was truly impressed with Dr. McCartin's genuine compassion and patience. She interacted with me in a gentle way, creating a comfortable environment and explaining everything in detail, which made the examination a positive experience. Dr. McCartin's dedication to providing exceptional care extended beyond the examination itself. She took the time to address any concerns I had, going above and beyond to ensure that I felt supported and confident in her ability to treat my eye. Sylvia I. read more

There are not enough words to describe how Dr. McCartin and her team of therapists have impacted my son's and daughter's lives. We had no idea about the field of neuro-optometry before coming to the West LA Visual Processing Institute location, but thankfully our pediatric optometrist noticed that even though she could do in-house vision therapy, our kids needed more specialized care and referred us over. Dr. McCartin is someone I have so much respect for; not only is she very passionate about the field of neuro-optometry, she also cares deeply about the whole patient and their progress from start to finish. She also explores the socio-emotional impact visual processing disorders have on people, including young kids who feel "different" in school because they are struggling to keep up even though they are intelligent and are capable of the curriculum...just in a different way. This is something that not all vision therapists, or those in the field of optometry do, and having someone who puts their love into the care of each patient makes all the difference. I feel like I have become a walking infomercial for Dr. McCartin and her work, educating teachers at my kids' elementary school about visual processing issues, as well as adults whose own kids are struggling with different learning disorders. I will gladly talk to anyone who needs a personal perspective on what it is like to be a parent of 2 kids who are capable of doing the work in their assigned gifted magnet classes, but need accommodations to meet where the disconnect between their brains and eyes. Dr. McCartin explains everything so clearly and deeply that you walk away knowing way more about how your eyes and brain work together (or struggle to until vision therapy is completed!) than you ever thought possible (unless you went to optometry school). You will not regret starting with an evaluation to see where your baseline is. Even PRO athletes use vision therapy to sharpen their skills...it is not just for people who are "suffering in silence"! Set up an appointment...it is life-changing!! This is not your standard eye exam-it is so much more that you just need to experience it for yourself. Thank you to Dr. McCartin and her team of therapists at the West LA office...our kids would be severely struggling in school if we didn't have you! She is forever part of the village that helps raise our children!! read more

Dr McCartin said that her vision therapy would resolve the vision problems that I was experiencing. I spent $11,000 and spent my Saturday afternoons for a year and a half coming here. She claimed that her vision tests showed improvement but I did not experience any real life improvement. Nonetheless she encouraged me to keep coming, insisting I'd get results. After 60 sessions and no real world results, I finally decided to stop. Dr McCartin did not apologize or take any accountability. Rather, she was full of excuses and she even tried to blame me. I tried to get a refund but she refused, and I even tried working with a lawyer but she got a more expensive lawyer. I would not recommend this place! I feel like I got taken advantage of. read more

Dr. McCartin is absolutely amazing! My daughter had some over correction of her eye and she is correcting it using prisms. She is brilliant and humble and genuinely wants to help which is a hard combination to find. Looks like we can avoid another surgery because of her. She problem solves out of the box which is incredible for our case. Can't thank her enough!!! read more

My son had been diagnosed by Dr. Baker in the summer of 2023 in need Vision Therapy. I am writing this review primarily due to her delayed response time and lack of follow-up. Dr. Baker recommended that we initiate Vision Therapy for our son. After 24 sessions (which we pay out of pocket due to lack of coverage for this therapy) Dr. Baker recommended for us to continue with 12 more sessions. She offers packages of 12 to purchase the evaluations at a slightly discounted rate and to have a regularly secured appt time. If you do not purchase the package you cannot have a confirmed weekly therapy appt. The challenge with this is she has very limited availability in the West LA Office. Dr. Baker has implemented a stringent policy on rescheduled appts and they must be rescheduled within the same month you purchased your package or you lose that session. It was after 24 sessions, Dr. Baker conducted another assessment/evaluation to assess my son's progress. We paid out of pocket for these evaluation. Dr. Baker recommended that our son continue the therapy. Our evaluation was conducted on 11/15/2023 and I requested a copy be sent to me. While she reviewed the results of the evaluation with us, as of date 1/10/24 I have not received the copy of the evaluation. I have requested this numerous time. Additionally the response time of her staff is severely delayed. The average response time via text (which they recommend) or call back is 10 days. It is challenging for me to recommend Dr. Baker as a credible provider or well-run practice. It appears she recommends her patients to sign up for therapy and continue to sign up for more therapy. Her staff uses the "lost appt time slot" as a reason that we need to sign up and purchase another package while withholding the results when requested. The therapist is very kind and it is apparent the therapist really cares about the patient. I had been holding off on writing this review as I really hoped I would have a call back from Dr. Baker or a better experience. Unfortunately this has not been the case. At this point I cannot say with confidence the therapy has helped. Short of the discussion with Dr. Baker I do not have my sons results from the last evaluation to review. Given this is considered a medical treatment I expect that the results are made available to me. I'm hopeful I hear back soon as Dr. Baker did share with us at our evaluation how important "yelp reviews" are to her business. read more

Short review: Dr. McCartin truly saved my career/ life. I thought I could never get my sight and mind back. Long review: I had, what I thought at first, was a minor concussion. It felt like waking up with the worst hang over of my life for months. The PC in charge of my injury made me go through acupuncture, physical therapy, speech therapy, and more things that I can't even remember. It was a bit over a year since it happened, and I still couldn't get back to myself. I would forget and misunderstand everything. All the intelligence I've worked for, my entire life, felt like it was gone. I had horrible trap pain, neck pain, headaches, dizziness, nausea and terrible forgetfulness. (I've been injected 7 times in my traps with anti pain injections and did nothing to me). The first visit with the Dr. McCartin, she took so much time talking to me about every single little symptom, every injury I've ever had, and all of the treatments the PC has put me through. As it turns out I've had a history of concussions and this last one was the cherry one top. She knew about my symptoms better than I could remember them, and express them myself. She was SO truly understanding of my pain and knew exactly what I needed to feel better while I was at the office. I felt validated for the first time in over a year. All of the therapy the PC had put me through was the complete opposite to what I was supposed to be doing, it was the reason such minor concussion had caused such chaos in my life, I would've never known had it been for her. The Dr. and therapist gave me such amazing treatment I was even able to get rid of contacts and glasses all together, because the contacts I was wearing previous to this last concussion were needed because of my history of concussions. Dr. McCartin truly knows her profession and you can tell she's so passionate about what she does. She's one of the two doctors I've ever visited who profoundly care about people and not just making money of people. She's saved my life and I'm finally been able to recover my mind, eyes and ability to be back to myself. She validated me every single time, when all other professionals kept on wondering what was wrong with me or gaslighting me about my symptoms. Shes one of the few doctors that finds cures, not just treatments. The cure to what I thought I'd have for the rest of my life. read more

I am beyond impressed by Dr. Baker and her amazing team of visual therapists! My dad had a devastating hemorrhagic stroke over a year ago. I noticed many behaviors and things with his eyes that were just not right. I spoke to neurologists, ophthalmologist, geriatric doctors, neurosurgeons, physical therapists, speech pathologist, occupational therapist....it felt like just about every medical professional that came in contact with my dad. NOBODY could tell me why he was doing certain things until we had our initial exam with Dr. Baker. My mind was blown by her knowledge and how she could explain why he his eyes were working the way they were and the plan to get them to see like he did before the stroke. she was honest about the damage that had occurred and the left field cut, but was confident that he could work on and dramatically improve the other deficits! finally, a doctor that knew exactly what was going on and how to fix it. his vision effects his cognition and progress in physical therapy as well. I wish we had found Dr. Baker sooner. She took a lot of time and explained things so thoroughly. My husband and I kept looking at each other during the exam with our jaws on the floor. professionals thought my dad had a problem with his attention, but when he is doing vision therapy, he is laser focused on the tasks. It is clear that the connection between the brain and his eyes were causing him to appear unfocused. The activities during vision therapy are engaging and challenging at the same time. the materials and cutting edge technology that is used during therapy sessions is beyond impressive. Thank you Dr. Baker, Ms. Yolanda and the whole vision therapy team for helping my dad!!!! We are forever grateful!!! read more

Dr. McCartin (formerly Baker) is so amazing!  In a regularly scheduled annual exam with our family optometrist, we learned that the vision in our daughter's left eye had suddenly worsened by a large amount.  We were very scared when we were told that if she didn't have the corrective lenses and help to address this eye right away that she might develop a lazy eye -- resulting in our scheduling an appointment with the Visual Processing Institute (formerly Performance Vision Therapy) for our first assessment with a specialist that we hoped could help us.  Today, our daughter has improved in all areas discussed in our first assessment after completing her therapy treatment in a matter of months!  Dr. McCartin and her staff took such great care to listen to our every question and concern.  Their always kind and friendly professional approach to all activities and assessments alleviated so much worry for us, who were very scared parents.  Our daughter looked forward to therapy every week because the exercises and games were so much fun for her to do!   We highly recommend calling today to gain the invaluable insight and expertise of Dr. McCartin and her amazing staff! read more

Can I give this more stars? Please? One of my children was referred to vision therapy by a doctor and in scouring the web to find someone, I stumbled upon Dr. Baker and never looked back. After the initial consultation and test, I was blown away by the technology and approach to correcting issues. Being familiar with lens optics and three dimensional photography, a lot of what Dr. Baker was saying clicked with me and made complete sense. After a few visits and talking with Dr. Baker about other patients she has seen and the reasons why, I had another child of mine tested and ended up having two kids in therapy. The difference has been astounding! Between improved reading, self-confidence, behavior, sports, my wife and I feel we "almost" have two different kids as they have come so far! Thank you to Dr. Baker and her team for all they've done for our two kids. Best internet search & find we've ever done!!!!! read more

I discovered Performance Vision Therapy when Dr. Kalie Baker gave a talk on Facebook. She explained how many muscle movements are involved when a student looks up from the paper on their desk to where the teacher is writing, on the board. Something clicked. I just knew there was something going on with my 12-year-old daughter's reading. Her eyes checked out "normal" at eye appointments. She read fine and tested high on comprehension, but there just seemed to be something else happening. After listening to Dr. Baker speak, I knew I wanted her to examine my daughter. Dr. Baker has the most amazing technology that tracks the eyes as the patient reads a paragraph on the computer and plays short little games. Not surprisingly, Dr. Baker discovered that my daughter was having trouble controlling her eye movements as she read. Dr. Baker set her up with eye therapy once a week and sent home fun exercises to do between therapy appointments. My daughter went to eye therapy for 10 months. At her six-month checkup, after therapy had concluded, Dr. Baker found that my daughter's eyes were still tracking normally. It has made a big difference in my daughter's life. It was hard for her to concentrate in school or when doing homework when she was constantly having to work at refocusing her eyes. I am so glad Dr. Baker took the time to reach out to the community. She is extremely approachable; we immediately felt comfortable with her. Her team of therapists are energetic, fun, and super encouraging. Dr. Baker and the therapist are like coaches and a cheering section rolled into one. They want their patients to get better and they work with them to make that happen. read more
