Adult strabismus: i noticed my double vision in 2018. I tried eyeball exercises, wearing a patch on my good eye so i can strengthen my bad right eye, and had to get prism glasses for when im driving. I was scared to get surgery on my eyeballs & was holding onto hope that maybe itll go back to normal. Seven years passed and i finally surrendered, that it aint going away. After some online research, i only went to see Dr Dietz. Dr Dietz & staff Dahlia are so kind, professional, never felt rushed, helpful, and responsive. I made an appt right away for the surgery, just get it done because i wish ive done it sooner! My problem was my right eyeball was slightly turned inwards (esotropia?). The result?? No double vision! Im still not used to it and it feels surreal. I drove without my prism glasses, i watched tv without getting a migraine or wearing an eye patch, i feel a little more mentally focused..i couldnt stop smiling & giggling for joy the first day. Its only been 16 days post surgery and something interesting is that you may experience a vision confusion, and not meaning in a worried way.. i say this in case if you experience this too, give it more time as our bad eye is now aligned & "re-programming" with your brain to accept this new vision is in fact "one" focused and not the "two" that my brain was so used to seeing everyday for the past 7 years. AMAZING Pediatric Ophthalmologist. Got an urgent referral from our pediatrician at Cedar Sinai after my 5 year old son got hit with a ball to the face and was reporting blurry vision in one eye. He did a VERY comprehensive exam and talked my son thru everything. He was kid friendly, funny and reassuring to me as an anxious mom. Just wrapped up my last visit with dr deitz. Unlike many patients, i got strabismus (cross eye) as an adult. I though it was due to previous vision correction that had digress. I was seeing Double Vision. Cars from the right lane had a shadow image of the car that would show up on my lane. It was more apparent at night time than day time. It became very dangerous for me to drive. When i closed one eye, then shadow image was gone. Was recommended to deitz by an optometrist friend. I had also went to UCLA jules stein institute but ultimately returned to dr deitz because of his extensive experience and confidence. He did 2 measurements. First one was an evaluation. And 2nd one was pre-op. He is a true doctor and confident. Straight to the point. He'll answer all your questions as if you need to completely understand the process. I even proposed for him to do only one eye but his answer was "if we did that, you would not have a positive result and would only be performing 1/2 the surgery". It has been 4months. And i am extremely satisfied with the result. Very happy customer. Definitely go see him for strabismus. Best in town. Dont waste time going to anyone else. I couldn't write this review fast enough for Dr. Deitz. The location was at a distance from our place, but I wanted to make sure I was choosing the right doctor for my recently diagnose of Strabismus. The office was large, clean and clearly set up for children. I could hear Dr. Deitz patiently treating a young child and friendly talking to the kid while answering the parent's questions. Shortly after, I was shown into an ultra-clean examination room and after 10 minutes Dr. Deitz came in apologizing for the wait and started a thorough examination of each eye, he took measurements etc., asked me numerous questions and confirmed that I had Strabismus. He took his time answering my many questions and discussed very clearly my options to manage my Strabismus. Based on his knowledge and confidence of how to address this eye condition I made my mind up right there that I wanted to have surgery and I wanted him to be my surgeon. I asked my husband to join me in the examination room where I asked Dr. Deitz to go over my condition and options again, my husband carefully listened to Dr. Deitz as he went into details of my condition and options, my husband agreed with me that surgery was the best option and Dr. Deitz was the best surgeon. Several days before surgery Dr. Dietz personally texted me and asked me to text him back if I had any concerns or questions, I had a lot more questions to which he responded to. Dr. Deitz even called due to me mixing up my post-op time with my surgery time. I can't think of or know of ANY surgeon who goes out of their way to care this much for their patients, and to give out his personal phone number to a patient and encourage questions, amazing! I wish I had known of Dr. Deitz years ago! He is absolutely the best doctor ever. For 5 years I struggled with double vision, wore prism glasses for driving, and even tried eye exercises, but my vision kept getting worse, all I wanted to do was close my eyes as I was getting so exhausted. Never have I encountered such a rude physician in my entire life! I brought my 2 year old daughter in to have her eyes checked by Dr Deitz. At our appointment, he was getting extremely impatient while examining my daughter, who for a 2 year old was doing extremely well. While he was checking her eyes, another toddler was crying outside the examination room and to my surprise he blurted, "great, just what I need, another 2 year old on my schedule!!" I definitely wasn't expecting that type of reaction from a pediatric ophthalmologist! He dilated my daughter's eyes and told me she needed to wear glasses 24/7- no other explanation. Like any normal parent, I was concerned and wanted to hear more regarding her eye health. Instead he handed me a generic one page document about my child's condition and sent me home. Once I got home I researched my daughter's condition on my own and I tried calling Dr Deitz to ask him questions. He returned my call and left a message. When I returned his call I left a message with the front receptionist, Alina, but I never heard back from the doctor. At our 1 month follow up my husband accompanied me during his work hours so that we could both ask the doctor questions. Since we both do not wear glasses, we had a short list of questions we wanted to ask the doctor. When Dr Deitz walked in, he was very rude and curt, just like the first appointment. He looked at my daughter for 5 mins and said to follow up in 6 months. I asked if we could ask him a few questions, and his response was shocking to say the least. He told us to call him after office hours! Excuse me but we took time out of our busy day and are PAYING you to answer our questions! I told him that wasn't going to work for us and that I tried calling him after my daughter's first appointment and he interrupted me, rudely responding "I called you back!!!"... taken aback I responded that I returned his call but never heard back from him. He angrily left the room, returned after a few moments and answered our legitimate questions regarding our 2 year old daughter eye health-- bravo Dr Deitz, you did your job! Luckily I was able to book an appointment with UCLA peds ophthalmologist, Dr Deamer, whose demeanor was the exact opposite of Dr Deitz. I could barely function - unable to walk, drive, go out, socialize, or exercise due to the severity of the double vision. I fell into depression, was crying a lot and acted out on my family members. I had been to many specialists for my eye condition, and many said they could not help me. As I got older, my eye condition got worse, and I researched the best option for me, which was surgery. I'm so happy I did! After an exam and some tests, I went for an MRI and then I was good for surgery. My adult strabismus had gotten a lot worse and had became life altering! Fifteen years ago I was standing at one end of a football field watching two cheerleaders performing a synchronized cheer-routine 100 yards away. I called over a colleague to watch "them" with me. He replied, "Are you nuts, there's only one girl down there" Strabismus had begun and it steadily progressed through stronger and stronger prism lenses until my double vision surpassed the lenses that could correct them. Everywhere I went I had a bag of glasses for sun, reading and distance. There was always one hanging off my collar. Like you, I was terrified of anyone cutting on my eyes. Scary you-tube videos did not help much either. I just gave up hope. My world just shrank. Two competing images of life robbed me of freedom. I quit playing ball, stopped driving at night. I became dependent and withdrawn. My ophthalmologist at Kaiser Permanente told me that adult surgery is "iffy" and often "did not last". So, I just gave up. Years later, a relative of mine was having plastic surgery done by a renown surgeon In Beverly Hills (Dr. Daniel Gould). As we left his office I off-handedly asked him if he knew a good strabismus surgeon...He did not hesitate..."Deitz is the man". REALLY?! I searched him on Yelp and realized that ALL the people who used Dr Deitz as their personal surgeon gave him 5 stars. (How often does that happen on Yelp??) My first appointment lasted 1 1/2 hours. When it ended I knew he was my doctor. I could trust him with my eyes. The rest was so easy and painless that I wondered why it had taken so long. I woke up from surgery to see ONE of everything. After a horrific, disastrous experience with a Dr. Federico Velez at UCLA Stein Eye Center, I was terrified to start over with a new surgeon. But Dr. Deitz was recommended by another eye surgeon who specializes in lens replacement and cataract surgery, and that surgery was so successful for me seven years ago I trusted that doctor's (Dr. Uday Devgan, a genius) recommendation. I am so glad I went ahead. Dr. Deitz is so thorough, patient, knowledgable, and great at what he does. He was very patient with my questions and in explaining his approach. He went above and beyond to fit me into his always full schedule as I was set to leave the country after my surgery, but I got a virus right before my surgery and he had to postpone it. Dr Deitz changed my daughter's life. She was born with a cataract, which was greatly impacting her vision in that eye. Though we intervened early with a different doctor by patching and wearing glasses, she was not improving. We were a week away from a surgical procedure that in my gut felt premature and not quite right, when we sought a second opinion from Dr. Deitz. From the very first visit with Dr. Deitz, everything changed. He explained that her prescription wasn't strong enough, and recommended that we hold off on surgery and return in 2 months. When we did, her vision had improved, and continued to do so with each two-month visit until she was seeing 20/20 with her new glasses. (It was 20/100 in that eye when we came to him.) Just a few months ago, she was able to stop patching for good. We have continued visits every 2-4 months over the course of the last four years, and her vision remains great. Dr. Deitz is incredibly patient, approachable, and kind. He explains things thoroughly, and eases all fears and concerns. He is amazing with kids, and his knowledge is second to none. Warning this is long but they deserve it!! We love this office, staff, and Dr. Deitz! My son had been dealing with a turned in eye since he was 3. We had seen many doctors over the years and knew he would need surgery but due to moving, changing insurances, etc the stars hasn't aligned yet. We had been going to the Children's Hospital Opt clinic for an year and a half on a monthly basis (we live 2 hours away in Bakersfield), the year prior to that we had changed ins and moved states but were working for a year toward surgery (so 2 1/2 years), the visit where we were going to schedule preop the phy said she was switching practices so we had to switch doctors and we would be starting all over. We were devastated!!! So we took a break from all the eye doctors since my son goes to his dad's for the summer. We started the painstaking process all over again. First a regular eye doctor, then referred to an opthomologist, then referred to a phy that does the surgery my son needs. In comes Dr. Dietz! We got in rather quickly and due to google maps being wrong we were an hour and a half late. He still was able to see us since we had driven so far. The first appt he examined my son, heard our story and was already to begin the process for surgery. Such a relief!!!! We saw him once more then we scheduled the preop and surgery. I am getting teary eyed writing this due to the excellent personal service we got. Surgery was on a Friday morning. Dr. Dietz was very kind and sweet to both of us prior to surgery seeing as we were anxious and scared. He explained to my then 10 year old what they were going to give him and that he was going to fall asleep. Stay away! He gave a misdiagnosed prescription to my son with a very high number. My son is only 2. He rushed through the exam and when I asked if my husband can call him to ask some questions bec it was a very dramatic diagnosis he said he doesn't have time for that. Super busy doctor but not a good doctor. With kids so young it's difficult to get accurate read. It takes time to get it right. Thankfully we went to a second opinion by Dr Hodes who was super patient and did the exam over two visits just to be 100% sure that it was the right prescription and it was much much less than what Dr Deitz prescribed. read more
