This is tricky to write. Let me start by saying the ending was better than most of the experience. First, there are a ton of forms. Oy. Second, there are a ton of employees and it's like being in Grand Central Station because they are all running back and forth really fast. I was sitting in a room with the door open and I felt like that episode in Twilight Zone of the freak that everyone looks at because they literally stopped and looked on their way by. I even mentioned that to the guy that was helping me. I've never had that experience before. When I booked the appointment they didn't tell me that the dilation would last 3 to 5 hours and I would have really liked to have known that and would have made arrangements for drop off and pick up since driving home in traffic with the sun in my eyes was a challenge. At the end I got Dr. Besser and I really like him. Good doctor that showed me the pics of my eyes and answered my questions so for him, I will recommend. read more

Found this entire experience very professional, assuring and helpful. I was not kept waiting long. The doctor was charming, knowledgeable and kind. He spent a good amount of time with me and answered all my questions. Really helped address the issues I was having. I found the care to be exceptional. My only real issue was with his assistant who did my intake. He was a bit overly inquisitive about unrelated medical issues and medications. And I'm not particularly shy or private during medical visits. While I do appreciate a solid work up and documented medical history, there's a fine line between getting too nosy and asking about unrelated personal issues during an ophthalmology appointment. Also, the doctor dilated my pupils without any warning or discussion which made it challenging for me to drive home. I would've appreciated a heads up and being advised that I wouldn't be able to see clearly for well over an hour. I have since referred him to friends, so the issues were relatively minor compared to the level of care and expertise. read more

Excellent Ophthalmologist Dr. Besser, M.D. is! After researching half a dozen eye doctors in the area that my insurance would cover, I chose Dr. Besser because of his education, professional background & good review of his service online. I was worried because I came across reviews that did not have good things to say about his administrative office & that there were very long wait times. So, I made sure to schedule the first appointment of the day and to connect personally with the front desk staff ahead of time to input all of my personal & medical record information. I was very pleased with the intake process. Friendly & helpful staff both on the phone & in person, a very developed digital registration process (completed before appointment, which saved a lot of time) and a very satisfying eye appt. with Dr. Besser. He is very knowledgeable. He provided in-depth answers to all of my questions and showed me images of the eye so that I could better understand what he was communicating. I do recommend him. I encourage you to do the same thing I did and get the first appt. of the day and call ahead of time to sort out all details before walking through the door. read more

I went in to see Dr. Besser at the recommendation of the office by my neighbor who had seen his colleague for glaucoma-related concerns (Dr. Besser focusing on the general ophthalmology). Before I met with Dr. Besser, his staff members Julia and Rob, who were wonderful, were very thorough in getting the details of my story and taking my measurements and giving me the initial eye tests. Julia was kind enough to talk to me for an amazing length of time about all manner of concerns I had at the time. When Dr. Besser came in to see me, he had looked at me for maybe five seconds when he literally picked up on a minor hand condition I had involving blood vessel constriction, which I thought was remarkable. He looked my eyes over, gave me a diagnosis he was fairly certain about, explained it in detail and also really put me at ease by having a relaxed but lengthy conversation with me about everything. I found him to be incredibly kind and knowledgeable. For my first experience with his care, I thought it was pretty fantastic, and in two subsequent appointments since, it's been the same. I helped my uncle set up an appointment with Dr. Besser for a second opinion on needed eye surgery. My uncle has already had a surgery on one eye and has been living with extreme discomfort and visual impairment for the last few months. Based on my uncle's recent appointment, I cannot say that I would recommend Dr. Besser to anyone. My uncle and aunt had to wait for nearly two hours to see the doctor, during which time a variety of tests and assessments were completed by his nurses/technicians. After being in his office for nearly three hours, Dr. Besser finally came in for a total of about FIVE MINUTES. During these brief moments, he told my uncle that the surgery he needed was too expensive (making radical assumptions about my uncle as an elderly working class Latino man) and wasn't sure how much good it would do him anyway. Dr. Bessar was cold, condescending and lacked anything resembling a bedside manner, and while he seems to be able to speak Spanish fluently, appears to be unwelcoming to his Latin patients. I paid $350 CASH for this visit, because I had gotten a good recommendation for Dr. Besser -- but the five minutes of his time that my uncle received were not nearly worth the money. Seek a better, kinder doctor elsewhere. read more

Woke up with a painful and swollen right eye - great way to kick off a Friday! Fortunately, they were able to squeeze me in for an immediate appointment. I expected a bit of attitude from the staff/doctor because I clearly arrived during lunch hour, but everyone was really nice. Dr. Besser didn't rush me at all and took his time explaining the issue and treatment (turns out I have a chalazion, not a stye). He even taught me a cool DIY heat compress trick with rice & socks so I wouldn't have to make an extra stop at the pharmacy. Do not go to this Ophthalmologist. I was referred to him by my primary provider because I had floaters in my left eye that made it so I could barely see. After keeping me waiting for over an hour he came in and asked me about my eye. He didn't let me finish even one sentence, and then he looked into my eye with his scope. He rolled his eyes and said you're getting old and walked out of the room. I went to another ophthalmologist and got a serious diagnosis of my eye. It turned out I had a partially detached retina. Dr Besser tries to make the most money with the least amount of work. If you don't have the best insurance, he doesn't give you any time. I'm sure he billed my insurance for the maximum he could. My whole process from making an appointment to seeing the doctor was a positive experience. I arrived for the appointment with a brief wait time in the reception area. Each person that I was seen by prior to seeing Dr. Besser was welcoming, friendly and professional. My visit with Dr. Besser was a positive one. He was relaxed and spoke to me and not at me, explained things to me, answered all of my questions and more importantly did not make me feel rushed. Staff do not comply with CDC guidelines in distancing and cleaning aspect of the area attending patients ! This place should be closed in this situation ! The Professionals are good , 8 staff members in 1 squared office entrance , training it seems , but there's no excuse as Eyes are Main to be covered for Covid -19 , and staff do not get this, nor when the patients exit , there is no indication on procedures of care on the way home nor at home, after drops on the eyes that make dilatation of the pupil open up, and need of glasses very dark are needed, they should provide them as complementary throwaway ones , and tell you rest before driving as everything will be shiny and block your sight ! No TLC FOR PATIENTS, like the one in charge does not care about Covid at all! Sorry ! You might Desperately need to work, but not in this way ! I would never ever recommend Eduardo Besser for the following reasons: I do not trust or have any confidence in his medical judgments because of the following experience Eduardo Besser recommended he first do cataract surgery on my right eye which I cannot see out of because I was born with lazy eye which was never corrected, I refused this surgery. I signed a surgical contract with Besser for cataract surgery in my left eye for a specific Vivity lens (which I paid for before the surgery)which he said would give me close up and distance vision. In the operating room he substituted a different lens for the Vivity lens which I did not agree to or sign for. After the surgery in the operating room he said "I owe you a refund because I used a different lens" and then walked out. The substitution was because the lens he ordered didn't arrive. The substitution of lenses was not made for a medical indication or a medical emergency and I should have been consulted about whether I wanted to have a different lens and postpone the surgery. The one he ordered didn't arrive at the Surgical Center. My surgery should have been canceled and postponed. I have been suffering for almost a year now with blurry vision, can't tolerate sunlight or lights indoors, I was promised no more glasses and now I can't see without glasses(I paid out of pocket) that do not solve my problems. And on my follow-up appointment he actually said he would do another surgery to fix the problems. I went for a second opinion and that Dr. said never to have another surgery on my left eye because if anything went wrong I would be blind in both eyes. read more

This is my third time going to Dr. Besser and I was not seen by the doctor until 75 minutes past my appointment time (45 mins in the waiting room, 30 mins in the diagnostic room.) Dr. Besser was great and answered all my questions. We spoke for 5 minutes, and I was on my way out. While I appreciated the breezy automatic online booking system and pre-check-in, it's pointless if every walk-in can just cut in front of a patient who made an appointment. The first time I was there(I called to make an appointment by the way.), after patiently waiting for 40 minutes and saw people who arrived after me kept getting called in, I checked in with the receptionist and found out that she FORGOT to put me in the queue. That said, the staff I encountered there were very nice, countered to some reviewers' experiences. The wait time is just all the more RIDICULOUS for all the scheduling technology the clinic utilizes. read more

I hadn't seen an eye doctor in a couple of years. My vision was getting worse. After fitting me in for a first visit, Dr. Besser's staff did a number of tests -- no pain, clear instructions. Dr. Besser reviewed those and ordered more tests. After it was all over, Dr. Besser went over the results with me, suggested a simple procedure he could do next week on the day convenient to me. After running medical offices for years, I know that it is difficult to actually spend time with a patient, have patience with them, treat them with respect as well as acknowledge their family members! Well, Dr Besser did just that. My mother refused to visit an ophthalmologist for over 40!years! She wore glasses in her early life and then when those were broken or lost, she merely stated she could "see just fine and didn't need them." (So not the case!!) She was diagnosed with moderate cataracts and vision of 200/20 by Dr Besser and his staff--and although she continued to deny it all and refused glasses, Dr Besser and his office continued to smile and be patient with her. This review is about the office staff. They have consistently been unprofessional, rude and careless during the three years in which I've been a patient in good standing of Dr. Besser. Many times, I have been given wrong information and so has my insurance company. The office manager, LaToya, is given complete autonomy to run roughshod over the patients. She is extremely condescending, aggressive and confrontational to the point of jeopardizing the health and welfare of Dr. Besser's patients. If she is angry, she will decide if you can be a patient of Dr. Besser. Otherwise, you will not have any contact at all with your doctor. This is a very questionable state of affairs and should not be allowed or tolerated by an otherwise fine physician. read more

I was expecting a wonderful visit with Dr. Besser. I arrived 1o minutes late and was asked to wait in the hallway due to Covid protocols and the waiting room being full. Waited 5 minutes and was moved into the reception area to fill out forms that I had already filled out online. Before finishing I was brought into an examination room by an assistant who asked why I was here and how Dr. Besser could help me. Very nice so far, especially since I have had eye surgeries in the past and have early stages of cataracts and glacoma. However, when I mentioned I felt I badly need a new prescription for new glasses, I was told that Dr. Besser does not do this--he only examines the eyes for abnormalities and anomalies. My previous opthalmologist has always checked my vision as well as corneal and retinal problems, but I was always given a prescription for new glasses. Since he would not provide this service, I left the office without ever meeting Dr. Besser. read more

I recently had Dr. Besser at the Los Angeles Eye Institute perform refractive lens surgery in both eyes and could not be happier with the result. I am in my early 50s and was tired of wearing reading glasses and decided to look into this surgery. Dr. Besser and his helpful team--including Christine, the Practice Administrator, Sonia, the surgery coordinator, their front desk staff and technicians - could not have been more wonderful and supportive. They explained the whole process, the surgery was very fast, the recovery was painless, and the results could not have been better. I went from contacts and reading glasses to 20-15 vision, better than 20-20!!! I would highly recommend this surgery if you are tired of wearing reading glasses and/or contacts and I would not consider anyone other than Dr. Besser and his team to perform this surgery, he is really the expert in Los Angeles on this life-changing surgery--I feel 20 years younger just being able to see without glasses or contacts!! read more

I have learned so much about the eyes after having my eyes get so f up within the past few months, from what type of eye specialists existed to preventing my vision from worsening. As I get older my body is starting to shut down on me. I used to feel invincible ha but not anymore. Time to take care of myself and stop being lazy. Meh. Without health insurance, my visit would've cost me about $190 bucks. WTF! So glad I had insurance with a co-pay or else I would've driven myself to the OC to find a cheaper doctor. There's free parking over there too. Here, they charged $8. Had I come earlier, I would've found cheaper parking. My appointment was at 830am and the traffic was a disaster. I needed to go in and out quick so I could head to work. So I got to the office, filled out all the paperwork for new patients and then I was seen. They said my visit would estimate to be 2 hrs. It was way longer than that because of the potential stuff the doctor found in my eye after getting my eyes dilated (for the first time). My vision had gotten a lot worse. Dr. Besser explain everything going on with my eyes. He's very knowledgeable...and he speaks Spanish fluently. He referred me to a retina specialist. I was told to test my blood glucose, etc. I was pretty bummed out. After I talked to the doc, I did a lot of researching and asked all my health professional friends many questions. I learned so much during this visit and afterwards. The best thing I got out of this visit was I qualified for lasik in the future once my vision stabilized. And the worse thing was the anxiety I endured until I saw the specialist. Overall, this visit was an education one and a wake up call. Note to the wise: don't sleep in your contacts whether it be a day or a few days to nearly a week. I used to be able to do that. Your eyes will eventually become sensitive to them and eventually reach the point where you can barely wear them in that long. My eyes have reached that point where they turn super red and dry. It makes me miserable. My friends poke fun of me when I wear glasses to the club and other events lol. I don't mind but it does suck sometime. Now I'm waiting for my time to get lasik. In the mean time, I'll be in nerd mode on the daily. read more

Dr. Besser has been my go-to eye doc for many years, and will continue to be. I've referred my 65+ year old mother who has eye problems to him (she also is on blood pressure medicine) and friends, all of whom have received very good care. My mother so adores the man, this is the only eye doc she sees, and is happy to fly 5 hours to see him. I've known Dr. Besser go well beyond the duty doctors have with patients, and open his office after hours, make home visits and even donate to special charitable causes. If you want an eye doctor with great skill, an enjoyable personality with a heart of gold, you've found him. He's fluent in Spanish and is a pleasure to be around since he's a clear communicator and a funny person. I personally wouldn't accept reviews made by people like "Paddy H.", who lives in NY and has only reviewed one business (this one). It seems there are some fake reviews. read more

Dr. Besser is truly incredible. Earlier this week I woke up with my eye swollen shut and that same morning Dr. Besser was able to get me in the office before noon. He determined that I needed an urgent CT Scan of my eyes which his office was able to arrange within 2 hours of my initial visit. Within 20 minutes of my CT scan being done, Dr. Besser called me with the results. Wow. Since my CT Scan he's been available over text and has even reviewed photos over the last few days as my eye has gotten progressively better. I can't thank him enough for helping me through this.
