A must when traveling to Japan. Vision Mobile offers affordable pocket wifi rentals which make it easy in Japan. I prefer to get my pocket wifi before leaving for my trip so I dont have to worry about it once landing. I usually book online and get a phone confirmation. Pick up is a day before your trip at their Waikiki location. The only hard part is their pick up location, but if you bring a friend with you to wait in the car, it should be fine - or you could grab a bite in the Waikiki shopping plaza since you're already driving there! The wifi itself is easy to use. They explain to you when you pick up, but its all pretty self explanatory. The battery lasted pretty much the whole day if fully charged and is small enough to carry around with you all day without adding extra weight. You can return the wifi when you get back to Hawaii on the departures floor after getting your luggage. Would highly recommend booking for your next Japan trip! read more

Visions Mobile Hawaii is still my go-to to get pocket WiFi for Japan. We booked another pocket wifi for our trip to Japan earlier this year and we appreciate how we were able to booked without placing a down payment for a reservation. The pocket WiFi was different from what we used before. It was newer, thinner, and lighter. The only downside was that there's no indication on how much battery is left. You need to scan the QR code sticker on the back of the pocket WiFi and the status will be shown on your phone. It is a little inconvenient and the website to show the status was pretty wonky and in Japanese. Regardless, the WiFi was good. The signal was great when we were visiting major cities such at Tokyo and Osaka. There was an issue with connecting when we first arrived but we reset the WiFi using the paper clip pin provided in the bag. The bag included instructions, paper clip, and charger. Overall, the WiFi signal is not perfect but it is good enough to last your whole trip in Japan without any major issues. It lasted about little over 10 hours on a full charge. Every time we travel to Japan, I always book my WiFi here. So convenient to pick it up in Waikiki and easy to return at Honolulu International Airport when we come back from Japan. They have a drop box near the JAL counter. Prices are very reasonable and we never had a problem with the WiFi. The salespeople are very efficient and quick. I always call in advance to reserve a WiFi as soon as I know my trip dates to Japan. For peace of mind, I also purchase the insurance just in case. read more

Location is easy to find, they validate your parking and the ease of returning very convenient. Definitely recommend coming here, got flawless connection in Osaka and Okinawa. Japan WiFi rental went very well. The WiFi router lasts all day without the battery dying . They also don't count the day you pick it up and you can drop it off at airport or at office even when it's not open. Rented pocket WiFi for 13 days, which came out to be around $48 with tax. Picked it up at their office, they explained some stuff, and I was on my way. In Japan, the pocket WiFi worked perfectly, fast internet. I was in Hokkaido, Tokyo, and Okinawa (literally as far apart as you can get in Japan). Internet kept up. There were only a few times it got disconnected briefly or slowed down, but 99% of the time it worked without any problems. I don't know if there was a data limit, but I never hit it. I think one of the days we used 5GB, and it was still working just fine. On average, I think I used less than 2GB a day (mostly for Google map). I returned the pocket WiFi at the airport when we landed. There's a drop off box, and they give you clear photos and instructions on where to return it. read more

Service was great at the counter, and they explained all of the functions and how to use the pocket wifi. We used it back in June for our first trip to Japan for two devices. It was recommended to me by a colleague. It was easy to set up once we landed and had a long battery life. I think we only had to restart it twice while we were out and about. We turned to Vision Mobile for a WiFi hotspot to travel with to Japan. I had no idea these were so popular, and the Ala Moana location recommended by a coworker was booked months in advance. I called Vision Mobile 5-6 days before our trip, and they had plenty of WiFi hotspots for our time period. Reservation was easy, my husband said pickup was easy (they allow you to pick it up, up to 48 hours prior to your travel date), they show you how to use the hotspot, and troubleshoot (if needed). We had zero issues with the WiFi on our 15 day trip. We traveled to multiple cities, and never worried about having Wifi service. This was also the most affordable option we found (approx $60, unlimited data for 15 days). We had two iPhones connected to the WiFi at all times, and it was super fast. Return was also extremely easy, as there is a dropbox at the airport when you return from your trip, and you receive an e-mail when they pick it up, confirming your return. We will definitely be using Vision Mobile again for our WiFi hotspot needs! read more

Going to Japan? Gotta stay connected? A portable wi-fi for your smartphone is just the thing. Sim-card rentals are limited by how much data can be used, and is only workable depending on cellular coverage. The Yelp reviews are really taking off in Japan. And if you also want to avoid the overages dealing with your phone while reading said Yelp reviews, you'll need a mobile wi-fi hotspot to rent for your phone while in flight-mode. Vision Mobile Hawaii is the spot to give you that hot-spot as you plan your trip. I've found that searching for free wi-fi spots in Tokyo is a challenge and frustratingly slow, with everyone within earshot trying to connect to the same public wi-fi spot. Vision Mobile Hawaii is located on the third floor of the Waikiki Shopping Plaza, right next to Tanaka's. It's a nondescript office room, which specializes in serving Japanese visitors to Hawaii and those who are going to visit Japan. I often go to Japan to visit family and take a few days to unwind from the daily work here. I don't particularly call anyone while I'm in Japan, so I've never really found much use for a mobile phone rental being marketed at the airport in Japan, nor found it particularly comforting knowing that my rented sim-card might suddenly not work, or exceed my data limits. The mobile wi-fi hotspots made available for rental are: - Convenient, - Last a full day before having to re-charge again, - Fast, and - Incredibly easy to operate; it's just on and off. - If it freezes, turn it off and on again. Koji was very friendly and polite, and answered all of our questions about the terms of rental, and how to operate the mobile hotspot. Data usage is not figured into the rental cost of the unit. Rates are on a sliding scale, depending on how long you are going to be in Japan - anywhere from a day to longer (who in their right mind would take a 9-hour flight to be in Japan for just a day). The rental rates are not cheap, but for the convenience this product offers, I think it's worth saving for - a week for $50.00, two weeks for $100, 3 weeks for $110. All the streaming cute-kitty videos you'll ever need, and all the time in the world to read, and make your Yelp reviews. Reservations may be made over the phone, and you just pick it up and pay the day before your flight out. If you do need to make a call from your cell phone, you can use any of the apps that are available that connects calls via data, such as Facetime, Skype, or Line. Unfortunately, the rental units are only available for use in Japan; and are not rented for use in any other country. I think if those units are available for use in other countries in Asia, Europe or South America, they'd have a real resource for Americans going abroad to stay connected. I'll be going to Europe later this year, and I'm already struggling to find something as useful as this. Rentals are only limited to the portable hot spots, and nothing much else. But for this reason alone, this is my spot to go to before I fly out to visit the Land of the Rising Sun. Thanks, Vision Mobile! I usually go to HIS for WiFi when I visit Japan (it's closer and my husband gets a discount) but when we wait til the last minute And they are out I always go to Vision Mobile. They've always had WiFi available and the service has always been great (we visit primarily Tokyo and Sapporo a few times a year). I also appreciate that you can return the WiFi at the airport (though the place isn't the most convenient but still easier than going back into the office). The staff is always very friendly, too.
